Abstract

The success of Health care professionals (nurses, a midwife, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist) working in a large NHS Trust hospital who had completed the Certificate in Health Education with the support of their employer, were interviewed. The study objectives were to seek their views on the quality of the course, to determine the extent to which participants were able to apply their new found knowledge and skills in the care they provided to patients and the level of support received to allow them to do this. Barriers that prevented staff from routinely applying health education in their work were identified. The findings indicated that the majority found the course content to be good and relevant to their clinical work but they identified lack of time due to the pressure of routine clinical work as the main barrier to the promotion of health education in their clinical area.

Abstract

Purpose

Learning analytics are often used as proxies for student engagement. More qualitative data on how post-secondary students engage with course elements are needed to guide the design, development and deployment of learning analytics information, particularly in the use of nudge techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

In the context of a graduate-level quantitative course within a public health core curriculum, the following research questions were explored: What do students cite as their motivations when making decisions about whether, when or how to engage with course content and learning supports? and What are student reactions to visual prompts designed to activate these motivations? This qualitative study included two phases of interviews: (1) in-depth interviews with screen sharing as students interacted with the learning management system and (2) in-depth interviews as students reviewed pairs of visual prompts that could potentially be used as behavioral nudges.

Findings

The study found that student motivations when making decisions about course content and learning supports principally fell into three categories: learning, doing and performing and that all participants attributed their visual prompt preferences to personal motivations or self-perceptions as learners.

Research limitations/implications

We acknowledge the limitations for external validity and generalizability of the findings in this study. The goal of this formative design research was not to assess the relationship between study habits and motivations and learning outcomes; rather, it was to provide insight to researchers and practitioners seeking to develop, test or employ nudges based on learner study habits. We also acknowledge the small sample size for Phase 2. The aim of Phase 2 was not to identify emergent themes through content analysis but to explore student reactions to nudges mapped to the Damgaard and Nielsen (2018) typology as part of investigating its salience in applications informed by Phase 1 learner study habits.

Practical implications

Insights from this study could not only be used to design engagement-focused interventions to be applied in education but also in sectors such as training or organizational development. Educators could incorporate the study’s findings to create more engaging learning environments or curricula, fostering active participation and improved learning outcomes and inform policies in education, public programs or workforce development by encouraging evidence-based engagement practices.

Originality/value

The motivation categories that emerged here – learning, doing and performing – are consistent with studies delving into motivational constructs in education like expectancy value theory, self-regulation and achievement orientation (Ames and Archer, 1988; Pintrich and De Groot, 1990; Wigfield, 1994) and can be leveraged to design interventions that increase engagement, which has been shown in previous work to be lower than hoped (Garbers et al., 2022) to support student educational outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

To explain a guidance update issued in February 2017 by the staff of the Division of Investment Management (Staff) at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on how robo-advisers may meet their disclosure, suitability and compliance obligations under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 (Advisers Act).

Design/methodology/approach

Examines the update’s guidance on three areas – the substance and presentation of disclosures, the provision of suitable investment advice, and the adoption and implementation of effective compliance programs – and then raises practical considerations for robo-advisers.

Findings

The update reflects the Staff’s increasing concern about the potential risks of the robo-adviser platform and provides a listing of key issues that the SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) – which recently added “electronic investment advice” as a new focus for its 2017 examinations – may zero in on when examining robo-advisory firms.

Practical implications

Robo-advisers should carefully review the Staff’s update to evaluate whether their firms’ operations address the guidance.

Originality/value

Practical advice from experienced securities regulatory lawyers.

Abstract

In the Theory of Modern Sentiments Smith distinguishes between the actual impartial spectator and the ideal; the man within the breast – a mechanism that allows Smith to extend the theory of moral approbation to judge the actions and motives of the agent himself. Argues that the significance of this is that Smith is then able to postulate standards of morality which are in some sense absolute, valid for all times and places. Shows that Smith deploys these absolute standards in evaluating how custom and tradition pervert the moral sentiments in some instances. This in turn allows him to legitimately speak of progress in human societies. Smith′s bias in favour of commercial society over the early and rude state is, therefore, rooted in his moral philosophy.

Abstract

It is salient to be acquainted with the key elements that determine educational tourists’ decision in selecting an overseas destination while considering the rise of international competition amidst nations concerning international students. There has been a growth in the number of nations committed to attracting educational tourists. This issue is evident in countries involved in higher education (HE), such as Northern Cyprus, identified as an edu-tourism destination. Northern Cyprus can attract a whopping number of tourists, and the higher population is most likely to be made up of international students regardless of its interdiction on direct flights and political pressure. This chapter centres on analysing educational tourists’ motivators in selecting a tourism education destination abroad and on revealing effective recruitment and promotion plans towards attracting them. The chapter includes the descriptions and discussions of educational tourism, the HE industry over the years, globalisation and internationalisation of educational tourism, factors influencing educational tourists’ decision-making process and key elements influencing educational tourists’ decisions in HE institutions. At the end of the chapter, a case study is presented that reports the findings of interviews with educational tourists, overseas recruitment agents and Eastern Mediterranean University staff responsible for promoting the institution. The results identified eight factors affecting educational tourists’ decisions on study destination. Those factors comprise cost, ease of access, location, social factors, quality of education, instruction language, cultural environment and communication quality. The sub-factors of the main eight factors are scholarships, destination’s scenery, safety, friends’ and relatives’ influence and cultural differences. This chapter brings a significant knowledge about the motives that affect educational tourists in selecting at a particular HE destination. Based on the study’s findings, educational institutions may consider various recommendations to redesign their strategies towards attracting educational tourists more effectively. Generally, this study promotes an apprehension about the diverse elements that affect educational tourists’ selection of a destination study. An in-depth understanding of these factors will help education institutions’ decision-makers better develop plans of action to provide desired services to educational tourists, attract and keep them in return.
