Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between organization image, awareness effort, customer demandingness, self-efficacy and self-rated performance among salespersons of Islamic banking products in the UAE. It also explores the mediating role of awareness effort and self-efficacy, using a theoretical framework derived from social cognitive theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are collected by surveying salespersons in a mixed bank (a conventional bank with an Islamic banking department) in the UAE. The researcher uses structural equation modeling to analyze the data.

Findings

The research concludes that customer demandingness positively affects awareness effort, awareness effort positively affects self-efficacy, self-efficacy positively affects performance and image positively affects salespersons’ self-efficacy and performance. Furthermore, the study highlights the mediating role of awareness effort and self-efficacy in the model.

Research limitations/implications

The sample consists of 217 salespersons working in the same bank, covering three cities in the UAE. Hence, the rest of the country is not included.

Practical implications

The study shows the importance of awareness efforts in achieving better performance. It also demonstrates the importance of addressing customer requirements in the banking environment. Furthermore, it illuminates the role of organization image in enforcing salespersons’ self-efficacy and performance.

Social implications

The paper sheds a light on salespersons’ personalities and the factors that reinforce their performance and self-efficacy.

Originality/value

The research is an empirical study that addresses the relationship between performance, self-efficacy, image, awareness effort and customer demandingness in Islamic banking in the UAE.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use a theoretical model based on the theory of reasoned actions to investigate the effects of attitude, religious motivation, awareness and service and pricing on the intention to use Islamic banking among the Muslim minority in Spain. It also aims to determine the profile of a potential Islamic banking customer among this minority.

Design/methodology/approach

The research focuses on a survey of Muslims living in Barcelona, Spain, who know of the existence of Islamic finance but do not have access to it. The research uses factor analysis and logit regression to analyse the data.

Findings

The results show that attitude, religious motivation and awareness are important factors affecting the intention to use Islamic banking. The study also shows that the potential Islamic banking customer in Spain is a Muslim (Spanish, Moroccan or Pakistani), male, and did not reach university degree in his education.

Research limitations/implications

The sample has 154 participants living in Barcelona, with the rest of Spain being ignored, although results should apply to all Muslims in Spain. Also, this study does not consider attitude as a moderator.

Practical implications

The research shows the potential for Islamic banks in the Spanish market and the possibility of raising awareness about Islamic banking.

Social implications

Islamic banking in Spain could help the Muslim minority to participate effectively in financial activities, thus leveraging their capacity to integrate into the community. The study also highlights the importance of empowering the women in this minority and could help society by encouraging off-banking money to flow into the financial sector.

Originality/value

The research is the first empirical attempt to test the factors affecting the intention among Muslims in Spain to deal with Islamic banking. The study also highlights the importance of Islamic finance for Muslim minorities as a method to support their religious identity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of the following factors: image, awareness, Shariah compliance and individualism, on the attitude and intention of customers to use Islamic banking among Bank customers in UAE, and the mediating role of attitude in that model, using a theoretical model based on the multi-attribute attitude model, the theory of reasoned actions and the theory of planned behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

The research will focus on surveying bank customers living in UAE. The researcher will use structural equation modelling to analyse the data.

Findings

Results show that attitude and awareness affect intention directly, while image, awareness, Shariah compliance and individualism affect attitude directly and intention indirectly mediated by attitude.

Research limitations/implications

The sample size includes 178 bank customers living in three cities in UAE, hence, the rest of the country is not included.

Practical implications

The research shows the importance of Shariah compliance, individualism and image on attitude and intention and provides suggestions for banks to benefit from these aspects to widen their customer base.

Social implications

The study provides an insight into individuals’ decision making and the importance of a social approach by banks when advertising.

Originality/value

The research is the first empirical attempt to test new factors affecting attitude towards Islamic banking in UAE.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the main trends of scientific research in Islamic finance’s social aspects to clarify place, role and functions, especially in the context of increasing social problems. To achieve this goal, this paper focuses on the social component of Islamic finance, analyzes publications on social Islamic finance in the Web of Science database, covering the period from 1979 to 2020, specify the geographical localization of research networks, determines the most cited authors and their scientific position.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have applied several literature review techniques, a bibliometric citation and co-citation analysis, a co-authorship analysis and a review of the most cited papers. The analyzes’ results allow us to offer five future questions in Islamic social finance, zakat and waqf, which have not been investigated before and could influence Islamic social finance and Islamic finance research.

Findings

The authors also derive and summarize five leading future research questions.

Research limitations/implications

This is a limitation of using only the Web of Science Core Collection database as the premier resource and the most trusted citation index for the world’s scientific and scholarly research. Further study might expand the types of analyzed units, include more keywords and include other databases, such as Scopus.

Originality/value

This paper can be considered as an inspirational one to future researchers and policymakers in Islamic social finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study to explore the perception, satisfaction, awareness and attitude levels of clients towards Islamic banking in Oman. By recognizing the elements affecting client affiliation with Islamic banks, this examination means to give important experiences to further developing client commitment and fulfilment in the Islamic financial area.

Design/methodology/approach

This study embraces a quantitative methodology, using SPSS@28 programming for information investigation. Information was gathered through studies directed to clients of Islamic banks in Oman. Exploratory factory analysis (EFA) was led to distinguish key variables impacting client affiliation, and dependability examination was performed using Cronbach’s alpha.

Findings

The discoveries uncover that perception arises as the main variable impacting client connection with Islamic banks in Oman, followed intently by satisfaction and awareness. Notwithstanding, the attitude factor displayed lower unwavering quality. Factual tests affirm the vigor of the noticed patterns, featuring the significance of perception, satisfaction and awareness in driving client commitment with Islamic financial establishments.

Research limitations/implications

This study is dependent upon specific constraints, as it centres exclusively around clients’ viewpoints and does not consider the perspectives of non-clients or partners in the Islamic financial industry. Future exploration could investigate these viewpoints to give a more complete comprehension of the variables impacting client connection with Islamic banks in Oman.

Practical implications

The discoveries of this study have commonsense ramifications for Islamic financial foundations in Oman. By understanding the elements impacting client alliance, banks can foster designated methodologies to improve client commitment, fulfilment and steadfastness. This might include further developing correspondence endeavours, improving assistance quality and tending to client concerns to encourage a positive financial encounter.

Originality/value

This study adds to the current writing by giving experimental experiences into the discernments, mentalities, mindfulness and fulfilment levels of clients towards Islamic banking in Oman. The recognizable proof of key elements impacting client affiliation with Islamic banks offers important direction for banking foundations trying to reinforce their associations with clients and work on general execution in the Islamic financial area.
