Abstract

Purpose

The hydromagnetic mixed convection flow of an incompressible viscous electrically conducting fluid and mass transfer over a vertical porous plate with constant heat flux embedded in a porous medium is investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the Boussinesq and boundary‐layer approximations, the fluid equations for momentum, energy balance and concentration governing the problem are formulated. These equations are solved numerically by using the most effective Newton–Raphson shooting method along with fourth‐order Runge–Kutta integration algorithm.

Findings

It was found that for positive values of the buoyancy parameters, the skin friction increased with increasing values of both the Eckert number (Ec) and the magnetic field intensity parameter (M) and decreased with increasing values of both the Schmidt number (Sc) and the permeability parameter (K).

Practical implications

A very useful source of information for researchers on the subject of hydromagnetic flow in porous media.

Originality/value

This paper illustrates the effects of magnetic field on mixed convective boundary layer flow past a vertical plate embedded in a saturated porous medium with mass transfer and a constant heat flux.

Abstract

The problem of coupled heat and mass transfer by natural convection from a vertical impermeable semi‐finite flat plate embedded in a non‐uniform non‐metallic porous medium in the presence of thermal dispersion effects is formulated. The plate surface is maintained at constant wall temperature and concentration. The resulting governing equations are non‐dimensionalized and transformed using a non‐similarity transformation and then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite‐difference scheme. A parametric study of all involved parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results is illustrated graphically to show typical trends of the solutions. It is found that the variable porosity of the porous medium and the effect of thermal dispersion result in increases in the local Nusselt number.

Abstract

The problem of coupled heat and mass transfer by natural convection from a vertical, semi‐infinite flat plate embedded in a porous medium in the presence of an external magnetic field and internal heat generation or absorption effects is formulated. The plate surface is maintained at either constant temperature or constant heat flux and is permeable to allow for possible fluid wall suction or blowing. The resulting governing equations are non‐dimensionalized and transformed using a non‐similarity transformation and then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite‐difference scheme. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and excellent agreement is obtained. Useful correlations containing the various physical parameters for both isothermal and isoflux wall conditions are reported. A parametric study of all involved parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results for the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles as well as the skin‐friction parameter, Nusselt number, and the Sherwood number is illustrated graphically to show typical trends of the solutions.

Abstract

The problem of coupled heat and mass transfer by mixed convection in a linearly stratified stagnation flow (Hiemenz flow) in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field and internal heat generation or absorption effects is formulated. The plate surface is embedded in a uniform Darcian porous medium and is permeable in order to allow for possible fluid wall suction or blowing and has a power‐law variation of both the wall temperature and concentration. The resulting governing equations are transformed into similarity equations for the case of linearly varying wall temperature and concentration with the vertical distance using an appropriate similarity transformation. These ordinary differential equations are then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite‐difference scheme. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and excellent agreement between the results is obtained. A parametric study of all involved parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results for the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin‐friction parameter, local Nusselt number, and the local Sherwood number is illustrated graphically to elucidate interesting features of the solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the inhibition performance of an aqueous extract of Matricaria recutita chamomile on the corrosion of S235JR steel in 0.5 M NaCl by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements.

Design/methodology/approach

The inhibition performance was investigated using EIS and polarization measurements. Surface analysis demonstrates the presence of a protective layer on the steel surface in the presence of the extract. Quantum chemical parameters calculated for the molecules contained in the aqueous extract are interpreted to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the considered extract.

Findings

The inhibition efficiency of chamomile aqueous extract for S235JR steel increases with increasing amounts of plant concentration and with an increase in the immersion time. The optimal inhibition efficiency of chamomile extract, 98.90 per cent, was achieved for S235JR steel when immersed in 15 per cent v/v of extract concentration for 2 h. The surface analysis in the absence and presence of the chamomile extract confirmed the formation of a protective layer on steel surface. The quantum chemical calculations allowed to explain the great inhibition efficiency values by interpreting the calculated quantum parameters.

Originality/value

This is the first study carrying out an experimental and theoretical investigation on M. recutita chamomile as a green corrosion inhibitor, with interesting potential industrial applications.

Abstract

The authors explore the nature of commitment, job satisfaction and job characteristics, and the nature of the interrelationships among these variables concerning expatriate employees in Saudi Arabia. An examination of a sample of 504 expatriate employees reveals that these employees are, by and large, indifferent with respect to their perceptions of commitment, job satisfaction, and job characteristics. In addition, the results provide strong support for (1) the influence of job satisfaction on commitment, (2) the influence of job variety on commitment, and (3) the influence of job autonomy, identity, and feedback on job satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

Modern slavery is a significant issue addressed in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015, the UK Government introduced the Modern Slavery Act as part of a crucial broader set of initiatives that aimed to attack modern slavery. Regardless of the initiatives taken to mitigate this risk, little is known about how modern slavery disclosure affects corporate financial performance (CFP). Hence, our study aims to examine the impact of MSD on CFP empirically. It also examines the moderating role of governance quality on the MSD–CFP nexus.

Design/methodology/approach

We use computer-based content analysis to assess MSD levels for a sample of non-financial companies' annual reports. We use regression analysis to test our research hypotheses for a sample period of 2013–2019 for Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) All-Share non-financial UK firms. Our sample consisted of 786 observations.

Findings

We provide new empirical evidence that externally communicating modern slavery information in annual report narratives is associated with CFP. The finding is in line with stakeholder theory, which states that engaging in social responsibility practices and responding favourably to the stakeholders’ interests and desires would enhance corporations’ reputation and ultimately improve their performance. We further highlight the role of governance quality in this nexus and find that the interaction between governance quality and MSD is negative, suggesting a replacement effect.

Social implications

Our findings can be of interest to government, policymakers and other stakeholders. Policymakers need to establish a new, broader set of enforcement arrangements for MSD that may lead to better CFP.

Originality/value

Our research idea is original as it links emerging global issues (e.g. MSD) with traditional corporate concerns (financial performance) in a way that is likely to provide new insights as well as managerial and policy implications.

Abstract

Purpose

This research used the technology acceptance model (TAM) to explore the effect of customer relationship management, financial literacy and social influence on users’ intentions to adopt online banking. Furthermore, it explores the moderating role of personal innovativeness in technology in this context.

Design/methodology/approach

The measuring scale in this study was refined iteratively through talks with domain experts. A digital survey was used to gather data from 524 respondents, and PLS-SEM was used for analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal that customer relationship management and financial literacy significantly impact perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use but not the intention to adopt online banking. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly influence intention, whereas personal innovativeness and social influence do not. Additionally, the moderation effects of personal innovativeness between customer relationship management, financial literacy, social influence and intention are insignificant.

Originality/value

This innovative study introduces personal innovativeness in technology as a moderator in the perspective of online banking adoption, setting new standards in the field. This important point has not been covered in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Selection of resilient suppliers has attracted the attention of researchers in the past one decade. The devastating effect of COVID-19 in emerging economies has provided great impetus to the selection of resilient suppliers. Under volatile and uncertain business scenarios, supplier selection is often done under imprecise and incomplete information, making the traditional decision-making methods ineffective. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the application of a fuzzy decision-making method for resilient supplier selection.

Design/methodology/approach

A group of three decision makers was considered for evaluating various alternatives (suppliers) based on their performance under different primary, sustainability and resilience criteria. Experts' opinion about each criterion and alternative was captured in linguistic terms and was modelled using fuzzy numbers. Then, an algorithm for solving resilient supplier selection problem based on the trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TrIFTOPSIS) was introduced and demonstrated through a case study.

Findings

A closeness coefficient was used to rank the suppliers based on their distances from intuitionistic fuzzy positive-ideal solution and intuitionistic fuzzy negative-ideal solution. Finally, the proposed fuzzy decision making model was applied to a real problem of supplier selection in the clothing industry.

Originality/value

The presented TrIFTOPSIS model provides an effective route to prioritise and select resilient suppliers under imprecise and incomplete information. This is the first application of intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making for resilient supplier selection.
