The author considers the concepts of dispersion and homogenization in relation to modern three roll mill machinery appropriate to these operations.

Modern three roll mills are fitted with automatic temperature control equipment, each roll with its own thermostat system. In addition to uniform and reproducible working temperatures, this ensures savings in water consumption of up to 30%. With mechanical and hydrostatic roll adjustment systems any variation in the roll gap produces a corresponding variation in the contact pressure. With hydrodynamic pressure systems, the roll gap can be altered with a constant contact pressure.

Le 14 juillet 1943 — qu'on veuille bien considérer la date! — lorsque j'exposais devant un auditoire dont on ne saurait nier les aptitudes scientifiques le sujet suivant: «Système et principaux problèmes d'une doctrine scientifique du tourisme», je me heurtais à l'absence de compréhension et d'intérêt d'une grande partie de l'assemblée, bénéficiais de l'estime mêlée de commisération d'un petit nombre d'auditeurs et ne trouvais l'adhésion que de quelques‐uns. Personne ne demanda la parole. Or, depuis 1941, il existait un Institut de recherches touristiques à l'Université de Berne et un Séminaire de tourisme à l'Ecole suisse des hautes études économiques et commerciales de Saint‐Gall; de plus, en 1942 avait paru l'ouvrage fait avec mon collègue Krapf sur les fondements d'une doctrine générale du tourisme. La publication, peu de temps après, de ma conférence quelque peu remaniée et développée, resta longtemps ignorée.

Lorsque l'AIEST me confia la rédaction d'un des rapports de base pour son XXe Congrès à La Haye sur le thème l'«Apport Culturel du Tourisme de Congrès» je me posai de graves questions sur la manière de le traiter. En effet, le titre du rapport ainsi que le sujet du Congrès, soit «Le Tourisme de Congrès», signifiait l'invalidation partielle de la notion du tourisme telle qu'elle était généralement admise. C'est ainsi que je relus plusieurs fois le titre du rapport qui m'avait été confié, afin de me convaincre qu'il ne pouvait y avoir aucun doute quant à l'inclusion des congres dans la thématique du tourisme. Je dus enfin me persuader qu'il ne pouvait en tre autrement et qu'il ne me restait qu'à traiter le sujet spécifique sans affronter les problèmes plus généraux et plus fondamentaux de la notion du tourisme.

Obgleich ich ein enges, allerdings «voreheliches» Verhältnis zur Fremdenverkehrswissenschaft aufzuweisen habe, werden Sie es mir nicht verdenken, wenn ich auf meine gegenwärtig legale Beziehung, nämlich zur Ökonometrie, mich stärker als auf jene frühere stütze: Mein Vortrag wird mehr von der Ökonometrie als von der touristischen Wissenschaft, welche kaum mehr als ein Exempel liefert, handeln.

S'il est vrai, comme le constatent W. Hunziker et K. Krapf dans leur œuvre «Allgemeine Freindenverkehrslehre», que le tourisme moderne doit sa naissance à la liberté individuelle illimitée qui régnait au 19e siècle, l'essor qu'il a pris pendant ces dernières décennies n'aurait pas été possible sans une action bien orientée et organisée d'individus associés, c'est‐à‐dire sans une politique visant à favoriser le tourisme.

Over the last two to three decades, European welfare states have witnessed fundamental changes in both family and labour market structures with many more women being in the paid labour market. While this was seen to address previous problems linked to women’s disadvantage, it has also been argued to give rise to new risk and social inequalities, including falling fertility rates and increasing childlessness. Research has identified the lack of affordable childcare as a key factor in childlessness leading to a strong EU focus on early childhood education and care. Since 2000, the EU has played a more proactive role in policies and initiatives aimed to address decreasing fertility rates with greater pressure for convergence among member states. However, there has continued to be a large degree of variation between countries. This chapter thus examines the case of Germany which has one of the highest levels of childlessness in Europe. It focuses on the intersection between childlessness and childcare provision in Germany and analyses the existing childcare arrangements with a view to understand how they influence childlessness. Particular attention is given to the role of the German government as the main actor in the process to explore ideology-related explanations of German policy-makers which led to contradictory policies. Relying on an extensive review of the related literature and policy documents, together with the personal interviews with policy-makers, academics and women’s organisations, this chapter concludes that the relatively conservative outlook of the German government which prioritises the motherhood and caregiver role, and the dominance of the corporate welfare system, has limited developments to improve access to childcare resulting in ‘a culture of childlessness’ in Germany (Kreyenfeld & Konietzka, 2017).

En vue de cerner le sujet de ma communication, j'aimerais d'abord caractériser l'analyse touristique régionale. Celle‐ci découle de la notion d'espace, notion encore peu familière aux économistes. En revanche, ce qu'André Piatier appelle «l'étude touristique spatiale» a fait l'objet de nombreux travaux qui, pour la plupart, se réclamaient de la méthode empirique. En effet, quoi de plus logique, pour augmenter les subventions en faveur d'un syndicat d'initiative ou d'un organisme analogue, que de faire l'inventaire de l'équipement touristique local ou régional et de prouver, par a + b, que tout le monde en dépend: l'étranger ne fait pas seulement vivre l'hôtelier, le restaurateur, le chemin de fer, le chauffeur de taxi et le garagiste, mais il assure également l'existence du boucher, du boulanger, de l'épicier, du fleuriste, de l'ébéniste, de l'entrepreneur en bâtiment, jusqu'au marchand de tabac et de journaux, bref de toute la population active de l'endroit. La force persuasive de telles études supplée heureusement au manque de renseignements statistiques précis.

The purpose of this paper is to address corporate governance structures. Effective corporate governance can lead to managerial excellence but managerial ethical excellence does not always exist without effective corporate governance. Embedded in both effective corporate governance and managerial excellence is the “rightness of decisions” or the ethical decision making process. This paper analyzes this key process in the case of the failure of Swissair.

The authors examine the key corporate governance structure through an explanatory case analysis of Swissair. They look at the structure by applying institutional theory rather than agency theory. It is hypothesized that corporate governance structures must comply with the norms generated by various stakeholders as well as economic incentives. No one set of norms may dominate the compliance; otherwise a corporation loses legitimacy and resources. It is contended that this lack of compliance of all stakeholder norms led to the failure of Swissair.

The authors examined the strategies for governance in Swissair leading up to its failure. Critical examination of the various elements of effective corporate governance results in a model presented here for assimilating appropriate norms of behavior into the corporate decision‐making process. They purport that adoption of the model by corporations will improve decision making leading to improved survival and performance.

The case analysis provides for the development of a model of corporate governance which includes consideration of all facets of society, its stakeholders and the norms the stakeholders generate. It is contended that companies must consider ethical, social and political norms of behavior in corporate governance structures as well as economic concerns.
