Abstract

The choice of the transport mode is a fundamental part of distribution management which should be analysed carefully because of the impact upon a company's operational efficiency. Failure to identify the most appropriate transport mode may incur higher costs than are necessary and may provide a lower customer service level than is potentially possible. The decision upon the choice of the transport mode is extremely complex because of the vast volume of choice available together with the numerous methods of examination and evaluation of each choice.

Abstract

Looks at the eighth published year of the ITCRR and the research, from far and near, involved in this. Muses on the fact that, though all the usual processes are to the fore, the downside part of the industry is garment making which is the least developed side. Posits that the manufacture of clothing needs to become more technologically advanced as does retailing. Closes by emphasising support for the community in all its efforts.

Abstract

Philip Kotler identified the term “marketing” with two different but related processes; the first dealing with “the search for and stimulation of buyers” and the second with “the physical distribution of goods”. The reason for superior international marketing performance by certain companies may be the result of a small number of correct strategic decisions, or of being in the right industry at the right time and being able to meet market demands. Continual high international marketing performance, however, is more likely to be the result of exceptional management control to overcome the problems of both the search and stimulation of overseas markets and the growing commitment successfully to feed those markets with the goods through a planned physical distribution pattern. International physical distribution management is not merely a marketing support system, but it is an integral part of the marketing mix which helps create and develop the international marketing process. Even though physical distribution does not portray the glamour associated with international marketing, it should not be forgotten as a part of the marketing mix. However, in the future, international marketing success may depend more and more upon the efficiency and practices employed to ensure economic physical distribution of goods especially as competition intensifies from developed and developing nations.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Introduction The growth and development of an individual business may take several forms, from internal growth to acquisition and merger. If development reaches the stage of a multi‐national corporation then complex central or divisional organisational structures will be formed to provide a suitable basis for management control. When a company uses decentralisation of power through a divisional structure they seek the advantages of being large at the centre and small at the divisional level.

Abstract

The economy has recently gone through a period of industrial expansion coupled with high inflation where industry has tended to grow out of its problems by a combination of increases in output and higher prices. These policies, however, at a certain stage in the development will approach the limits to economic growth, and industry will find that a number of severe problems appear simultaneously. This leads to a period of concentration and economic decline where traditionally industry looks to the Government for relief and assistance; but it could be argued that instead they should consider a critical look at their own patterns of operation. If industry could eliminate the inefficient and ineffective elements in the structure, and concentrate upon improving the quality of their operation, then it is possible that policies adopted for economic survival will lead to growth and expansion. One way in which improvements could be made in the industrial structure is by streamlining the logistics system.

Abstract

One of the most difficult dilemmas facing industry today is the increasing cost of distribution. This is true for both incoming and outgoing supplies. The major trends in the last decade have been: the increase in industrial and consumer purchasing power; rapidly developing technology which has given rise to economies of large‐scale production; and there has been an increasing significance placed upon manufacturing productivity improvements. These trends have resulted in lower production costs; the need for geographically wider markets; and the acquisition of those management skills that are necessary to support such developments. In the last few years certain management emphasis has been placed upon minimising the rapid upward trend in administration and distribution costs. These have often more than offset any cost reduction achieved in production, with the result of a marginal price increase to the final customer. Those fields in which most advances have been made are automatic data processing and machine accounting. But the highest cost increases have often occurred within the physical distribution system. Since international marketing has developed to satisfy the extensive industrial and consumer needs, it is imperative that management realise the impact of distribution costs upon both inputs to the manufacturing process and the final product or services which they offer. The need has, therefore, arisen for senior management to tackle these problems, and air cargo distribution has recently begun to be considered, and will be increasingly important in the future.
