Abstract

With decreasing vertical dimensions of the bipolar transistor (BJT), non‐local effects of nonuniform electron temperature should have a significant effect on the BJT characteristics. These effects can be simulated using a hydrodynamic (HD) model of the BJT, in which the equation of energy balance is added to the set of Poisson's and continuity equations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose is to forward systems theory one more step towards social theory and integrate problem-solving and theory-building, and search for the integration and unity of science by revealing the nature and role of critical systems thinking (CST).

Design/methodology/approach

This article describes relations between systems theory and social theory in three parts. First, it examines the links of systems methodologies with three social science approaches as well as the role of CST. Second, the focus of theory and the form of explanation are discussed from critical social science (CSS) perspective. Third, the direction of theorizing of a CST-based systems theory is investigated.

Findings

First, CST is a hidden assumption of system dynamics (SD)/systems thinking (ST). Second, systems theory is positioned in CSS. Third, CST integrates traditional and soft systems methodologies (SSM), and connects systems science and social science. Fourth, this article reveals hidden links between systems approaches and three corresponding social science approaches. Fifth, the theoretical focus of a CST-based systems theory could be formal/structure theory and/or substantive/content theory. Sixth, the form of explanation could be structural/mechanismic explanation combining causal and interpretive explanations. Seventh, a CST-based systems theory may adopt abduction, which complements a defect in deduction and induction in a difficulty of nonlinearity.

Originality/value

It illustrates a graph of the competing approaches in systems science corresponding to paradigms in social science.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to solve the oil drill pipe joints and casing excessive wear problems and to improve the drill pipe joint-casing wear resistance and anti-friction properties.

Design/methodology/approach

On the surface of the drill pipe joints using oxyacetylene flame bead weld (BW) wear-resistant welding wire ARNCO-100XTTM prepares welding layer, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) Cr3C275-NiCr25 prepares coating and subsonic flame spray and remelt (SFSR) Ni60 prepares coating, then comparing and analyzing the friction and wear of the three types of wear-resistant layers and the casing under the condition of 1.8 g/cm3 mud drilling fluid lubrication. The wear resistance and anti-friction performance of the drill pipe joints were evaluated based on the wear situation, finally revealing its friction and wear mechanisms.

Findings

Three types of wear-resistant layers can improve the surface wear resistance of drill pipe joints, the wear-resistant layer and the substrate are well combined and the welding layers and coating are both dense and uniform. The wear resistance of the HVOF-Cr3C275-NiCr25 coating is 10.9 times that of the BW-ARNCO-100XTTM weld layer, and the wear resistance of the SFSR-Ni60 weld layer is 2.45 times that of the BW-ARNCO-100XTTM weld layer. The anti-friction properties of SFSR-Ni60 welding layer is the best, followed by HVOF-Cr3C275-NiCr25 coating, and the anti-friction properties of BW-ARNCO-100XTTM welding layer is the worst among the three.

Originality/value

The research results of this paper have great practical value in the process and material of improving the wear resistance and anti-friction performance of the drill pipe joint casing.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to give an overview about the state of the art and novel technologies used in gas sensing. It also discusses the miniaturization potential of some of these technologies in a comparative way.

Design/methodology/approach

In this article, the authors state the most of the methods used in gas sensing discuss their advantages and disadvantages and at last the authors discuss the ability of their miniaturization comparing between them in terms of their sensing parameters like sensitivity, selectivity and cost.

Findings

In this article, the authors will try to cover most of the important methods used in gas sensing and their recent developments. The authors will also discuss their miniaturization potential trying to find the best candidate among the different types for the aim of miniaturization.

Originality/value

In this article, the authors will review most of the methods used in gas sensing and discuss their miniaturization potential delimiting the research to a certain type of technology or application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the influences of the animal fat and fatty acid type on the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and to propose a formation mechanism of PAHs in fat during electric roasting, which is a method of non-direct-contact-flame heating.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of animal fats and model fat on the formation of PAHs were valued on the basis of the ultra high-performance liquid chromatography data. The corresponding products of the FAME pyrolysis were detected by TG-FTIR. The proposal formation mechanism of PAHs was based on the summary of the literature.

Findings

Contrary to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, DF had higher risk with 280.53 ng/g of concentration after being roasted than the others animal fats of red meat in terms of PAHs formation. This research also ensured the importance of fat on PAHs formation, the concentration of PAHs in pure fats was higher after being electric roasted than that in meat patties and juice which made from corresponding animal fat. What is more, during pure animal fats and meat products being processed, less PAHs formed in the fat with lower extent of unsaturation and lower content of linolenate. In the same way, methyl linolenate demonstrated the significant increasement to PAHs formation compared to the other fatty acids. And, the number of carbon atom and the extent of unsaturation in fatty acid affects the formation of PAHs during roasting. The detection of alkene and alkane allows to propose a formation mechanism of PAHs during model fat being heated. Further study is required to elucidate the confirm moleculars during the formation of PAHs.

Originality/value

This work studied the effect of the carbon atom number and the unsaturation extent of fats and model fats on the formation of PAHs. This work also assure the important of alkene and alkane on the pyrolysis of model fats. This study also researched the formation and distribution of PAHs in pure fats and meat products after being heated.
