Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to consider heat transfer in incompressible flow in a rotating flat microchannel with allowance for boundary slip conditions of the first and second order. The novelty of the paper encompasses analytical and numerical solutions of the problem, with the latter based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The analytical solution of the problem includes relations for the velocity and temperature profiles and for the Nusselt number depending on the rotation rate of the microchannel and slip velocity. It was demonstrated that the velocity profiles at high rotation rates transform from parabolic to M-shaped with a minimum at the channel axis. The temperature profiles tend to become uniform (i.e. almost constant). An increase in the channel rotation rate contributes to the increase in the Nusselt number. An increase in the Prandtl number causes a similar effect. The trend caused by the effect of the second-order slip boundary conditions depends on the closure hypothesis. It is shown that heat transfer in a flat microchannel can be successfully modeled using the LBM methodology, which takes into account the second-order boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on the comparisons of an analytical solution and a numerical solution, which employs the lattice Boltzmann method. Both mathematical approaches used the first-order and second-order slip boundary conditions. The results obtained using both methods agree well with each other.

Findings

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to investigate the onset of bio‐thermal convection in a shallow fluid layer; the convection is thus driven by the combined effect of swimming of oxytactic microorganisms and inclined temperature gradient.

Design/methodology/approach

Linear stability analysis of the basic state is performed; the numerical problem is solved using the collocation method.

Findings

The most interesting outcome of this analysis is the correlation between three Rayleigh numbers, two traditional, “thermal” Rayleigh numbers, which are associated with the vertical and horizontal temperature gradients in the fluid layer, and the bioconvection Rayleigh number, which is associated with the density variation induced by the upswimming of microorganisms.

Research limitations/implications

Further research should address the application of weakly nonlinear analysis to this problem.

Practical implications

The increase of the horizontal thermal Rayleigh number stabilizes the basic flow. The effect of increasing the horizontal thermal Rayleigh number is to distort the basic temperature profile away from the linear one. The increase of the Schmidt number stabilizes the basic flow. The increase of the Prandtl number first causes the bioconvection Rayleigh number to decrease and then to increase.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first research dealing with the effect of inclined temperature gradient on the stability of bioconvection.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which South African accounting academics use case studies in their teaching and to establish their views on whether this method can be used to transfer soft skills (also known as pervasive skills) to students.

Design/methodology/approach

An electronically administered questionnaire was sent to South African accounting academics.

Findings

Prior research provides evidence of the value of case studies in the transfer of soft/pervasive skills to students. The findings reveal that case studies are used less frequently by South African accounting academics than their international counterparts, because of a lack of awareness by South African accounting academics of the competencies that can be transferred using case studies, and the application of alternative teaching methods.

Originality/value

This paper provides insight into the use of case studies by academics in a developing country whose traditional strengths were in technical teaching, and the reluctance of the majority of South African accounting academics to embrace case studies into their academic programmes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to encourage the use of simulations early in a semester, rather than as a course capstone activity, in an effort to utilize simulations as a foundational experience. The intent is to support teaching and learning, as opposed to using simulations as a capstone assignment or assessment tool.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature review synthesizing higher education business simulation effectivity and evaluation methods provides support for the analysis of 60 undergraduate supply chain management students and 96 surveys conducted over two years. The research question explores effectiveness based on the point of time during a semester a simulation was used.

Findings

The analysis of simulation effectiveness, based on the impact of course enjoyment and assistance with learning key course competencies, showed no significant differences for simulations used early in a semester or as an end-of-semester capstone event.

Practical implications

Simulations are effective tools regardless of when they are employed, but there may be significant benefits to using a simulation early in a semester by capitalizing on the tool’s inherent experiential learning functionality, active learning theory and the Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle. Early use of simulations provides common student experiences and creates a foundation for educators to develop a deeper understanding of course concepts. Additional instructor effort is needed to develop external, course specific student work to supplement and enhance the simulation experience. Early use also creates post-simulation debriefing benefits that may be precluded by the end-of-semester simulation events.

Originality/value

Evidence suggests that simulations are primarily utilized as course capstone events and/or serve as comprehensive tools to integrate/assess a semester’s worth of conceptual learning. This work fills a gap in the research concerning time frames within a semester when simulations are traditionally employed, presenting a paradigm shift toward early utilization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate a combined bioconvection and thermal instability problem in a horizontal layer of finite depth with a basic temperature gradient inclined to the vertical. The basic flow, driven by the horizontal component of temperature gradient, is the Hadley circulation, which becomes unstable when the vertical temperature difference and density stratification induced by upswimming of microorganisms that are heavier than water become sufficiently large.

Design/methodology/approach

Linear stability analysis of the basic state is performed; the numerical problem is solved using the collocation method.

Findings

The steady‐state solution of this problem is obtained. Linear stability analysis of this steady‐state solution for the case of three‐dimensional disturbances is performed; the numerical problem is solved using the collocation method. The stability problem is governed by three Rayleigh numbers: the bioconvection Rayleigh number and two thermal Rayleigh numbers characterizing temperature gradients in the vertical and horizontal directions, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

Further research should address the application of weakly non‐linear analysis to this problem.

Practical implications

The dependence of the critical bioconvection Rayleigh number on the two thermal Rayleigh numbers and other relevant parameters is investigated.

Originality/value

This paper presents what is believed to be the first research dealing with the effect of inclined temperature gradient on the stability of bioconvection in a suspension of gyrotactic microorganisms.

Abstract

Purpose

Williams and Williams (2012, 2017) find multiple entrepreneurial motivations are experienced by entrepreneurs in deprived areas at different points in time. Drawing on this prior work this study aims to explore how and why the shifted motivations evolve, as well as, what factors cause this change in deprived areas. The work draws upon temporal motivational theory (TMT) that considers the influence of individuals' needs in determining their time-sensitive motivation.

Design/methodology/approach

Six semi-structured interviews with actual entrepreneurs are used to collect qualitative data from deprived areas of Nottingham, which is one of the most deprived cities in the UK. The study employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to consider each entrepreneurial endeavour as a unique journey to investigate the shifting of motivations.

Findings

A polarization is found in terms of how entrepreneurial motivations evolve in deprived areas. In considering the first task-specific entrepreneurial motivation, time plays a role either in accumulating job dissatisfaction and increasing confidence led by accumulated experience, or in creating random chances that enable individuals to realize that they are able to use existing skills and experiences to start a business. Regarding the second task-specific entrepreneurial motivation when the business becomes more established, it is usually stimulated by increased confidence based on perceived progress. The use of self-help methods and downward comparison found in this study should be noted as they help to re-consider individuals' needs in deprived areas.

Originality/value

This study produces a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of the time effect on shifted motivation at different entrepreneurial phases in a deprived context, which contributes to enrich theoretical knowledge and raise policymakers' awareness of entrepreneurial motivations from these marginalized groups.

Abstract

Studies have suggested that entrepreneurship is a key mechanism for rejuvenating and facilitating economic growth in deprived areas. To provide further understanding of the persistently low entrepreneurial intentions found in deprived areas this chapter identifies key mechanisms and theoretical frameworks that link the formation of appropriate human capital to the prevailing environment, and that influences may flow in both directions. This contributes to the existing literature to provide a fuller understanding of interest to policy-makers of why past interventions have struggled to boost entrepreneurial intentions and where new interventions may be most effective in generating more positive entrepreneurial intentions in deprived areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present results of an exploratory cross-cultural study aiming to examine the role and meaning of inspiration in organisational settings to advance the contemporary understanding of inspiration and its manifestations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilises Gadamerian philosophical hermeneutics to cultivate an understanding of the rationalisations of inspiration at work and to explore its conceptualisations to inform future research.

Findings

The findings strongly indicate that inspiration in its numerous manifestations is not confined to the domain of personal life and that it often occurs in organisational settings. There are no indications that inspiration is affected by the cultural belongingness of employees, rather it is found that attitudes towards inspiration differ among representatives of the different levels of the organisational hierarchy. A connection between motivation and inspiration is discussed and indication found that at the level of lay accounts the concepts are perceived to be both different and complementary.

Originality/value

The article presents a conceptualisation of inspiration in an organisational context to guide future research towards a more instrumental approach to recognising and utilising inspiration in contemporary management practice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an approach to business simulation with less dependence on business simulation software to provide innovative work experience within a programme of study, to boost students’ confidence and employability.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on analysis of existing business simulation literature, which is synthesised with contemporary pedagogic trends and the outputs of the authors’ longitudinal research on improving the effectiveness of business simulation as a teaching method.

Findings

The use of business simulation as a pedagogic tool can be considerably extended beyond built‐in functionality to match the needs of various business‐related disciplines. Learning from their own mistakes enabled students to appreciate the gap between theory and its application.

Research limitations/implications

Business simulation can provide an innovative provision of work experience for students, if its design utilises continuous formative feedback and reflective practice amongst other pedagogical elements rather than relying on sophisticated business simulation software.

Practical implications

This paper offers a blueprint for the provision of business simulation exercises in higher education as means for equipping participants with a work‐like experience.

Originality/value

The article presents a fresh view on the use of business simulation in the educational process, while contributing to the long‐standing debate on bridging the gap between theory and practice.
