Abstract

The global urban population is expanding rapidly, leading to higher energy consumption, air pollution, and traffic jams in cities that require more efficient solutions. Smart cities are anticipated to address the efficiency of urban infrastructure. In the Sultanate of Oman, the government launched the idea of establishing smart cities to promote large-scale planned urban expansion, especially in the capital, Muscat, as well as to promote accelerated development and growth. As the Sultanate embarks on this journey to establish smart cities “such as the Sultan Haitham City Project” to drive development in the country. The objective of this study is to ascertain the principles and facets of sustainable development and its contribution to the formulation of urban development policies. Additionally, this study seeks to evaluate the notion of smart cities along with their distinctive features and constituents. As the Sultanate of Oman embarks on this journey to create engines and alternatives to develop the economy and push the wheel of development in the country according to Oman Vision 2040, this chapter outlines the way to make this dream a reality. The chapter provides strategies for planned urban expansion, especially in the capital, Muscat, and guidelines for the development of smart cities. It explains in detail the difficulties faced by some smart cities in the world.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the role of social and cultural sustainability in shaping smart urban development in the Arab Region, focusing on three cities, i.e. Sharjah Sustainable City (UAE), Lusail Smart City (Qatar) and SEKEM (Egypt). The research looks into how cultural aspects are integrated into the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and their relationship in the achievement of SDGs and sustainable city pillars.

Design/methodology/approach

By following a mainly qualitative research approach and methodology of interviewing experts about the cities and carrying out an intensive literature review and case studies, this research analyzes the key cultural elements essential for the evolution of smart and/or sustainable cities. It highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage, enhancing social cohesion and promoting inclusivity, all within the framework of the established sustainability standards.

Findings

By following a detailed approach to case studies and rigorous research methods, this study provides valuable insights for architects, urban planners, policymakers and researchers. The research highlighted the importance of engaging the communities and local population in the urban planning processes to ensure that the voices of potential residents are heard and that development projects meet the needs of the local population. The research also concluded that the formation of a social and sustainability index is crucial in the Arab Region.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s utilization of secondary data and expert interviews may introduce biases, hence constraining the extent of analysis. Moreover, the concentration on a restricted set of towns may not adequately depict the variety of urban growth throughout the Arab region. Future studies would be enhanced by expanding their scope to include a wider range of case studies and utilizing mixed approaches to gain a more nuanced comprehension of sustainable strategies.

Practical implications

The findings offer a foundation for thoughtful and sustainable urban planning in Arab cities. The research emphasizes the vital connection between cultural preservation and sustainability goals and the importance of the inclusion of cultural dimensions in sustainability frameworks to create more inclusive and resilient smart cities.

Social implications

The study illustrates that incorporating cultural values into urban planning promotes social cohesiveness and inclusivity, hence enhancing the sustainability and resilience of communities. This method guarantees that urban development is both ecologically sustainable and culturally considerate, promoting the conservation of local identities and customs.

Originality/value

This study deepens the understanding of how cultural preservation and sustainability intersect in urban development. It provides important insights that can guide the development of smart cities, particularly in the Arab region, by ensuring that cultural values are integral to sustainable urban growth.

Abstract

Purpose

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) fruit and its rind are known to contain phytochemicals that may have health benefits. The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential hypocholesterolemic effect of watermelon fruit rind (WR) using rats who are fed a high-cholesterol diet.

Design/methodology/approach

Rats were divided into six groups and fed diets for eight weeks containing normal control diet or normal control diet with either 1% cholesterol, 5% WR, 10% WR, 1% cholesterol + 5% WR or 1% cholesterol + 10% WR. Triglycerides, total cholesterol and lipoprotein levels in serum and liver samples were determined, and histopathological examination of liver tissues was carried out.

Findings

Diets containing 1% cholesterol led to hypercholesterolemia, characterized by increased levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins in rat serum and liver samples. Incorporation of 10% WR into the diet of the otherwise hypercholesterolemic rats led to significant reduction in serum levels of total cholesterol (from 266.2 to 222.7 mg/dL) and low-density lipoproteins (from 159.5 to 94.4 mg/dL). In addition, these rats also exhibited improvements in hepatic tissue structure compared to the hypercholesterolemic rats.

Originality/value

These results support the potential use of WR as a hypocholesterolemic agent. Further research is needed to ascertain the hypocholesterolemic effect of WR in human.

Background: Human resource management (HRM) is the tactical method for a business enterprise’s optimistic and systemic administration. This study aims to identify the common and major triggering attributes and the knowledge gap between HRM and an organisation’s employee attrition rate.

Method: The employee Attrition Case Study Dataset used is an anecdotal data set that tries to figure out relevant variables that determine employee behavioural aspects towards attrition. This study investigates why attrition occurs, the major triggering attributes for employee turnover, and how it might be anticipated to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to avert corporate losses.

Results: Employees’ monthly income, age, average monthly hours, distance from home, total working years, years at the company, per cent of salary hike, number of companies worked, stock options level, job role and other factors are taken into consideration. A feature importance extraction framework was devised to investigate the various dormant factors. The findings also show feasible hypotheses that help enhance employee engagement, reinvent the worker dynamic, and higher levels of risk decrease attrition rate.

Implications: Employees’ monthly income, age, average monthly hours, distance from home, etc., are all major variables in employee attrition in the Indian IT business. This research adds to the theory development of behavioural elements in people analytics based on AI.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose applications of advanced signal-processing techniques for the diagnosis and detection of rotor fault in an induction machine. Two techniques are used: spectral analysis techniques and time frequency techniques for the diagnosis of an electrical machine. One is based on the power spectral density estimation techniques, such as periodogram and Welch periodogram. The second method is based on Hilbert transform (HT) to extract the envelope for the stator current. Then, this signal is processed via discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for determining the faulty components in the spectrum of the stator current envelope and identifying the eigenvalues of energies (HDWT).

Design/methodology/approach

First, this paper focused on theoretical development and a comparative study of these signal-processing techniques, which are based on the periodogram, Welch periodogram, HT and the DWT to extract the envelope for the stator current; it is used to compute the energy stored in each decomposition level obtained by the stator current envelope (HDWT). Moreover, the Welch periodogram is applied to obtain the envelope spectrum.

Findings

The simulation obtained and the experimental validation results of the proposed methods through MATLAB environment show the effectiveness of the proposed approaches with a good accuracy by power spectral density estimation techniques (periodogram and Welch periodogram). Moreover, the faults are manifested through the appearance of new frequencies components, as well as the envelope for the stator current (HT and DWT). This approach is effective for non-stationary and stationary signal to extract useful information for the detection of broken bar fault.

Originality/value

The current paper proposes a new diagnosis method for the detection and characterization of broken rotor bars defects early; it is founded primarily on theoretical development, and the comparison is based on the power spectral density technique (periodogram and Welch periodogram) and the computation of the energy stored in each decomposition level (precisely the HT and DWT). Moreover, the Welch periodogram is applied to obtain the envelope spectrum. The main advantages of the proposed techniques increase their reliability and availability.

Abstract

Purpose

In spite of the increasing organic and interactive marketing activities over social media, a general understanding of the source credibility of voluntary user-generated content (UGC) is still limited. In line with the social identity theory, this paper examines the effects of consumers' perceived source credibility of UGC in YouTube videos on their attitudes and behavioral intentions. Additionally, source homophily theory is included to predict the antecedent of source credibility.

Design/methodology/approach

Three hundred and seventy two Generation Y respondents were interviewed using snowball sampling. Data were analyzed with component-based structural equation modeling technique of partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

Findings confirmed that perceived source credibility indirectly affects purchase intention (PI) and electronic word-of-mouth via attitude toward UGC. Besides, perceived source credibility mediates the effect of perceived source homophily on attitude toward UGC.

Practical implications

Since today's consumers have begun to trust and rely more on UGC than company-generated content on social media when making purchase decisions, companies may reconsider democratizing certain aspects of their branding strategies. Firms may fine-tune their marketing communication budgets – not only just by sponsoring public figures and celebrities but also by nurturing coproductive engagements with independent content creators who are ordinary consumers. Endowed with their imposing credibility, these micro-influencers and prosumers have high potentials to be uplifted to brand ambassadors.

Originality/value

While consumers' purchase outcome can be measured easily using metrics and analytics, the roles of source homophily in stages leading up to the purchase is still elusive. Drawing on the rich theoretical basis of source homophily may help researchers to understand not only how credibility and attitude are related to PI but also how this nexus generates positive word of mouth among UGC followers within the social media circles.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the customer-contact employees’ (CCE) empowerment and customer performance indicators, namely, perceived service quality (PSQ), customer satisfaction (CS), customer loyalty (CL) and word-of-mouth (WOM). The authors deepen the analysis by highlighting the mediating role of the dimensions of the customer relationship management (CRM) effectiveness in this link. The authors also investigate links between customer performance indicators.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical study was carried out on the basis of a questionnaire administrated to a sample of 215 Tunisian bank CCE and 516 customers. Data analysis was performed using the structural equation modeling method.

Findings

Findings reveal that the CCE’ empowerment contributes to PSQ, CS and all the dimensions of CRM effectiveness which in turn are key factors of customer performance. This research also outlines the mediating role of two dimensions of the CRM effectiveness, namely, organizational commitment and customer experience between CCE’ empowerment and PSQ and CS, respectively. In addition, the study highlights that PSQ improves CS which is positively linked to CL. Finally, loyal customers tend to generate positive WOM.

Originality/value

Few studies have investigated the effects of the CCE’ empowerment on PSQ, CS, CL and positive WOM, especially in the banking sector. This research fills this gap by highlighting the mediating role of the dimensions of the CRM effectiveness in these links. This paper offers interesting insights to bankers by providing them with tools to improve their customers’ relationship. In this sense, banks must bet on the proximity of the CCE as a key asset that allows creating a real sense of closeness with customers and offers lighting to banks on how to create customized marketing approaches to ensure customer performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to accommodate the mechanical characteristics that comply with the spectra of active sportswear by taking the innovative features of double-layered fabric (double cloth) and polyester yarn. The research focused on blending two types of polyester: Renova® and polyester microfiber with different weave structures in both face and back layers for fabricated fabrics. Force resistance was investigated through several properties, the mass per unit area and thickness properties were also considered.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was divided into two phases. The first phase included three samples with the same double cloth structure and different weft materials to detect the most preferable performance. The second phase included three samples with the same materials and different double cloth structures. Several mechanical properties were tested in accordance with standard test methods, and the results were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed using a chart line, an ANOVA test with a p-value = 0.05, a calculated least significant difference (value) and a radar chart area.

Findings

The results assigned that blending Renova®/polyester microfiber develops mechanical properties than using them individually, considering the increase in polyester microfiber ratio. The double cloth with different plain structures has a significantly different effect on the examined properties, except for elongation and thickness.

Originality/value

According to the radar chart area, the double cloth with a plain rib structure achieved better performance, and in the same vein, the results showed that the plain with a warp rib structure enhanced fabric behavior more than the weft rib.

Abstract

Purpose

One important aspect of a quality work environment is its ability to protect workers from potential hazards while providing comfort, especially during long hours. This study aims to improve the properties of the polyester fabric used for uniforms by enhancing its ultraviolet (UV) protection factor (UPF), reducing electrostatic charge and increasing comfort.

Design/methodology/approach

Six different samples of polyester woven fabric were manufactured using a yarn count of 150/144 denier for the warp and 300/96 denier for the weft. Honeycomb and Bedford cord structures were performed with three different weft densities, 36, 45 and 55 weft/cm. The napping process was conducted on one side for all fabrics, and several tests were conducted before and after napping, including thickness, weight, tensile strength, elongation, air and water permeability, UPF and electrostatic charges.

Findings

The results were collected, tabulated and statistically analysed. Three different tools were used, given as follows: Column chart to define the behaviour of produced fabrics at each property; ANOVA test with p-value = 0.05 to indicate the significant and non-significant effects of different parameters; and Radar chart area to rank fabrics and demonstrate the preferable performance.

Originality/value

According to the investigated study, the produced fabrics were affected by the parameters, where despite the nap process increasing the fluffy surface and promoting airflow, UV protection and electrostatic charge, it aids in deteriorating mechanical properties and relatively reducing absorbency. Additionally, the weft densities are striking in various fabric characteristics and performances relating to the fancy weave structure.
