Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a detailed investigation of Shariah audit research based on a systematic literature review.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 53 studies were collected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases following a systematic methodology. These studies were analyzed and evaluated based on the theoretical perspective, geographical distribution, research settings and themes background.

Findings

The findings indicate an increase in the literature on Shariah auditing over time, especially in the Malaysian context, with a dearth of research in other contexts and institutions (Takaful). It has been also revealed that the existing literature is still unclear about the effectiveness and consequences of effective Shariah auditing, pointing the need for more work on these areas. The authors outline opportunities for future Shariah auditing research.

Originality/value

The synthesized findings are helpful for policymakers and managers to understand better how research in Shariah auditing is developing and how to translate research findings into practice. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first research to comprehensively synthesize the literature on this topic and identify the potential opportunities for future research directions.

Abstract

This paper discusses findings from qualitative research exploring young asylum seekers' (aged 18‐25) definitions and experiences of ‘home’ and ‘belonging’ at a time of transition to adulthood and adjustment to life in a new country. Previous research on refugees and asylum seekers has focused largely on either children or adults, often failing to highlight the particular experiences of those in young adulthood. It will be argued that young asylum seekers of this age have specific needs and experiences associated with the dual transition they face, in both adapting to life in the UK and becoming adults, and the changing support network and entitlements available to them as they go through this process.

Abstract

Computer technology in libraries has revolutionised the concept of rapid and accurate information services. In Pakistan, though, computer technology is new and is being successfully introduced in all types of libraries and information centres. This article reviews the literature on the use of computers in Pakistan’s libraries. The literature includes monographs, journal articles, reports, etc. published inside and outside Pakistan, discussing information technology, specific library applications, the activities of individual libraries and automation education. The need for library automation and the problems faced by Pakistani professionals in this respect are also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain close form expressions for the dynamic stability of conical wave riders with flat surfaces which could be equipped with lifting surfaces on its plain flat surface. Numerical simulation would require very large meshes to resolve flows at subscale level and the experimental evaluations would be equally difficult, requiring expensive measurement facilities with challenging procedures to secure such vehicles in confined test sections to obtain satisfactory wind on and wind off oscillations.

Design/methodology/approach

The design method uses appropriate pressure fields using small disturbance theory, which, in turn, is perturbed using the unsteady shock expansion theory to recover suitable expressions for the dynamic stability behaviour.

Findings

It was observed that the dynamic stability of the standard half-cone-type wave riders with flat upper surfaces deteriorates with the axis position measured from the pointed apex reaching a minimum at around x/co = 0.666. The half-cone wave rider with flat upper surfaces is dynamically less stable than a pure cone.

Research limitations/implications

The method is typically less accurate when the similarity parameter Mθ ≤ 1 = 1 or if the angle of attack is not small.

Practical implications

With renewed interest in hypersonic, future hypersonically would be designed as fast lifting bodies whose shapes would be close to the configurations of hypersonic wave riders, especially if they are designed to operate at upper atmosphere altitudes.

Originality/value

The analytic approach outlined in this paper for the evaluation of dynamic and static stability derivatives is original, drawing from the strengths of the small disturbance theory and shock expansion techniques. The method is particularly important, as there are no reported theoretical, numerical or experimental results in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use a computational technique to simulate the flow in a two-dimensional (2D) wind tunnel where the effect of the solid walls facing the model has been addressed using a porous geometry so that interference arriving at the solid walls are duly damped and a flow suction procedure has been adopted at the side wall to minimize the span-wise effect of the growing side wall boundary layer.

Design/methodology/approach

A CFD procedure based on discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations has been used to model the flow in a rectangular volume with appropriate treatment for solid walls of the confined volume in which the model is placed. The rectangular volume was configured by stacking O-Grid sections in a span-wise direction using geometric growth from the wall. A porous wall condition has been adapted to counter the wall interference signatures and a separate suction procedure has been implemented for reducing the side wall boundary layer effects.

Findings

It has been shown that through such corrective measures, the flow in a wind tunnel can be adequately simulated using computational modeling. Computed results were compared against experimental measurements obtained from IAR (Institute for Aerospace, Canada) and NAL (National Aeronautical Laboratory, Japan) to show that indeed appropriate corrective means may be adapted to reduce the interference effects.

Research limitations/implications

The solutions seemed to converge a lot better using relatively coarser grids which placed the shock locations closer to the experimental values. The finer grids were more stiff to converge and resulted in reversed flow with the two equation k-w model in the region where the intention was to draw out the fluid to thin down the boundary layer. The one equation Spalart–Allmaras model gave better result when porosity and wall suction routines were implemented.

Practical implications

This method could be used by industry to point check the results against certain demanding flow conditions and then used for more routine parametric studies at other conditions. The method would prove to be efficient and economical during early design stages of a configuration.

Originality/value

The method makes use of an O-grid to represent the confined test section and its dual treatment of wall interference and blockage effects through simultaneous application of porosity and boundary layer suction is believed to be quite original.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the rationales for, the trends and the impacts of innovations in the public management system of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Design/methodology/approach

This study has adopted an interpretative and exploratory approach. To this end, extensive reviews have been made of government documents, reports of international organizations and relevant academic research articles.

Findings

The findings show that the UAE Government has embarked on a massive innovation program to bring dynamism and to feed the requirements of the UAE Vision 2021. As pressured by both external and internal forces, the directions of innovations in the UAE public management system correspond to the global trends. The results of innovations are positive in terms of the enhancement of efficiency, effectiveness, citizens’ satisfaction and citizens’ trust in public services.

Originality/value

This paper links theoretical insights from different sources to analyze the dynamics of public management innovations in the UAE which will be helpful for further comprehensive empirical research in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to question whether learning outcomes of the first course in accounting could predict the overall academic performance of accounting students as measured by their graduating grade point average (GPA).

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of the present study was drawn from accounting students who were graduated during 2015 from a business college in Kuwait. Linear regression analysis was used to test the study's hypothesis.

Findings

The results indicate that there was a statistically significant association between the grade earned in the first course in accounting and the graduating GPA, which explained the significant impact of the learning outcomes of the first course in accounting on the overall academic performance of accounting students as measured by their graduating GPA, with and without controls for other factors.

Practical implications

The findings provide accounting educators with valuable insight into the significance of the outcomes of the first course in accounting, which would, in turn, lead to taking the necessary actions to enhance students' performances in this particular course, leading to improvements in the overall academic performance. The findings also provide academic researchers with a useful benchmark for future studies, as these findings would be expected to serve as a base for future studies in this area of research by re-examining the impact of students’ performance in the first course in accounting on the overall academic performance of accounting students in different educational environments and/or using the findings of the current study for another comparative research study.

Originality/value

Focusing on the impact of the learning outcomes of the first course in accounting on the overall academic performance of accounting students, rather than the other way around, the study contributes remarkably to the existing literature of accounting education, especially in developing countries such as Kuwait.

Abstract

Purpose

This quantitative study aims to examine the impact of accumulated knowledge of accounting on the academic performance of Cost Accounting students.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consisted of 89 students enrolled in the Accounting program run by a business college in Kuwait during 2015. Correlation and linear least squares regression analyses tested the study’s hypothesis.

Findings

Results indicated significant impact of accumulated knowledge on academic performance, with and without controls for other factors.

Practical implications

The findings provide administrators, academic advisors, accounting educators and researchers with a useful benchmark for the development of accounting curriculum, teaching plans and strategies and future academic research, and it forms the basis for comparative work aimed at the harmonization of international accounting education.

Originality/value

The study provides empirical support for the theoretical prediction that quantitative accumulated knowledge in accounting has an impact on the academic performance of students, especially in Cost Accounting. Internationally, it provides a foundation for future comparative studies, potentially leading to the harmonization of international accounting education. Regionally, it attempts to fill some of the gaps in the regional accounting education literature. Locally, the study seeks to improve the performance of the accounting students in Cost Accounting within the college where data were collected.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between abusive supervision and knowledge hiding. The study also examines the mediating role of distrust in the relationship between abusive supervision and knowledge hiding.

Design/methodology/approach

The procedure used in the study is a systematic literature review covering abusive supervision, knowledge hiding, distrust from 1994 to 2021. The studies were explored using the keyword search such as, “abusive supervision,” “knowledge hiding” and “distrust” from the selected databases including Emerald, ScienceDirect, EbscoHost and Google Scholar.

Findings

The study found that abusive supervision is positively related to knowledge hiding and distrust mediates the relationship between abusive supervision and knowledge hiding. The study also proposes procrastination as one of the dimensions of knowledge hiding.

Originality/value

The study is an attempt to uncover a series of relationships between abusive supervision, knowledge hiding and distrust, which may enhance academic discussion and also offer clarity to the conceptualization of these two fields.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of fire protective materials in protecting steel section. A new indexing system is introduced, named as fire endurance index (FEI), which can be used to evaluate the performance of fire protective materials.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, experiments were carried out using W4 × 13 steel section. Eight samples were prepared; one was a bare steel section without any coating material, and seven were prepared using four types of materials such as vermiculite-gypsum plaster, gypsum plaster, concrete cover and glass wool-concrete cover for fireproofing of the sections. An enclosed electric coiled furnace was used for heating the samples for a certain period. The duration of protection was determined, and the FEI of the materials was calculated. The higher the index value is, the better the performance.

Findings

The results demonstrate that the glass-wool-concrete cover offered the best performance at high temperature among the four types of materials. In the experiment with glass-wool-concrete cover, the furnace temperature reached 750°C, whereas the steel temperature reached only 100°C. The FEI of the coatings were calculated. Among the eight samples, glass wool-concrete cover also achieved the highest index value.

Research limitations/implications

The experimental work was performed using a limited number of specimens. Furthermore, the robustness of the indexing system needs to be evaluated with other materials and a wide range of heating rate and temperature. This study sets the foundation for future work.

Practical implications

The findings of this research may contribute to a better understanding of the performance of the materials used as fire protective coatings. This might be helpful for the researchers and practitioners in their design and implementation of legislation of fire safety codes.

Social implications

Understanding the performance of the fire protective coatings will help in evaluating the fire resistance capabilities of the materials to use for the structural steel members, which may protect collapses and disasters of buildings.

Originality/value

This paper deals with the performance of four types of materials, that can be used as fire protective coatings for structural steel members. Furthermore, the FEI explicitly indicated their performance with numerical values. In this study, the heating of the specimens was performed using a non-standard fire curve based on the concept that naturally occurring incidents of fire do not follow the standard fire curves.
