Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide acid‐dyes, known for the dyeing of porous aluminum oxide films, as inhibitors of the corrosion of aluminum in neutral chloride solutions.
Design/methodology/approach
Potentiodynamic polarization plots are recorded on mechanically pretreated aluminum using a three‐electrode cell containing 0.01 M NaCl solution with or without 0.025 mM of the acid‐dyes monosulfonic methyl orange (MO), disulfonic chromotrop RR (CH), disulfonic alphazurine A (AZ) and trisulfonic light green SF yellowish (LG). The X‐ray fluorescence technique is used in certain cases for the estimation of sulfur net content of the surface of the probes and thus of the concentration of the adsorbed dye.
Findings
The inhibition efficiency of acid dyes on corrosion of mechanically pretreated aluminum seems to be related more to the presence of a following quinonoid structure which probably contributes more to the formation of mono‐ or bi‐dentate compounds with the aluminum cations in the substrate than to the number of sulfonic groups in their molecule. Thus, the triphenylmethane dyes LG and, to a greater extent AZ, having this quinonoid structure means they are more efficient as corrosion inhibitors in near‐neutral chloride solution than the azo dyes MO and CH, that do not have it.
Practical implications
Selected acid‐dyes such as triphenylmethane sulfonic‐dyes, which have found wide application in the dyeing industry, seem to protect aluminum against the corrosive action of chlorides.
Originality/value
This paper is intended to be the nucleus for the electrochemical studies of the effectiveness of acid dyes as corrosion inhibitors for aluminum.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to coat ternary composite NiBP-graphite films by Dynamic Chemical Plating “DCP” technique with a growth rate of at least 5 μm/h, which makes this technique a worthy candidate for production of composite films. Electroless nickel plating method can be used to deposit nickel–phosphorous and nickel–boron coatings on metals or plastic surface. However, restrictions such as toxicity, short lifetime of the plating-bath and limited plating rate have limited applications of conventional electroless processes.
Design/methodology/approach
DCP is an alternative for producing metallic deposits on non-conductive materials and can be considered as a modified electroless coating process. Using a double-nozzle gun, two different solutions containing the precursors are sprayed simultaneously and separately onto the surface. With this technique, NiBP-graphite films are fabricated and their corrosion and tribological properties are investigated.
Findings
With a film thickness of 2 μm, tribological analysis confirms that these coatings have favorable anti-friction and anti-wear properties. Corrosion resistance of NiBP-graphite composite films was investigated, and it was found that graphite incorporation significantly enhances corrosion resistance of NiBP films.
Originality/value
DCP is faster and simpler to perform compared to other electroless deposition techniques. Using a double-nozzle gun, metal salt solution and reducing agents are sprayed to the surface, forming a deposit. Previously, coatings such as Cu, Cu-graphite, Cu-PTFE, Ni-B-TiO2, Ni-P, Ni-B-P and Ni-B-Zn with favorable compactness and adherence by DCP were reported. In this paper, the authors report the application of the DCP technique for depositing NiBP-PTFE nanocomposite films.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the structural, corrosion and the study of tribocorrosion features of the AA7075 aluminum alloy with and without the application of electroless Ni-P/Ni-B duplex coating with a thickness of approximately 40 microns.
Design/methodology/approach
Surface characterization of the samples was made by structural surveys (light optic microscope, scanning electron microscopic examinations and X-ray diffraction analyses), hardness measurements, corrosion and tribocorrosion tests.
Findings
Results of the experiments showed that upper Ni-B coating deposited on the surface of first Ni-P layer by duplex treatment caused remarkable increment in the hardness, corrosion resistance and tribocorrosion performance as compared to the AA7075 aluminum alloy.
Originality/value
This study can be a practical reference and offers insight into the effects of duplex treating on the increase of hardness, corrosion and tribocorrosion performance.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine whether polychronicity, an individual difference variable that involves a preference for multitasking, moderates the relationships between work-family conflict (WFC) and two work criteria, job satisfaction and work engagement; second, to examine two measures of polychronicity (the multitasking preference inventory (MPI) and the inventory of polychronic values (IPV)) and investigate whether polychronicity moderates the relationships between WFC and work criteria differently when measured by the MPI or the IPV.
Design/methodology/approach
The study’s sample included 257 respondents from the Amazon Mechanical Turk service who completed an online survey. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to test whether polychronicity moderated the relationships between WFC and two work criteria, job satisfaction and work engagement.
Findings
Polychronicity was found to significantly moderate the relationship between the work engagement and WFC. Follow-up analyses indicated that those who were lower in polychronicity had a significant decrease in work engagement as WFC increased, whereas those who were higher in polychronicity had relatively the same work engagement level regardless of changes in WFC. The results suggest that individuals higher in polychronicity have more personal resources and may be more resilient than those lower in polychronicity when it comes to not letting conflicts between their work and family lives affect how engaged they feel in their work.
Originality/value
This study extends the application of polychronicity to new domains of WFC and work engagement. The current study also contributed to the literature by investigating two measures of polychronicity (MPI and IPV) and finding that the MPI significantly moderated the relationship between WFC and work engagement, but the IPV did not. These findings indicate that there are important differences between the MPI and the IPV, and additional research is needed in comparing these two polychronicity measures.

Purpose
To identify the specific sources of occupational stress and the professional burnout experienced by teachers working in Greek primary and secondary schools. A special emphasis is given to gender and age differences. Design/methodology/approach – A cross‐sectional design was used. Two self‐report measures were administered to a sample of 493 primary and secondary school teachers, a self‐report rating scale of specific occupational stressors and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (education version).
Findings
The most highly rated sources of stress referred to problems in interaction with students, lack of interest, low attainment and handling students with “difficult” behaviour. Female teachers experienced significantly higher levels of occupational stress, specifically with regard to interaction with students and colleagues, workload, students' progress and emotional exhaustion. Younger teachers experienced higher levels of burnout, specifically in terms of emotional exhaustion and disengagement from the profession, while older teachers experienced higher levels of stress in terms of the support they feel they receive from the government.
Practical implications
The findings will help to implement effective primary and secondary level prevention programmes against occupational stress taking into account how males and females and younger and older teachers perceive stress at work.
Originality/value
The study is a significant addition to the teacher stress and burnout literature, especially in Greece where few relevant studies exist dealing with these problems.

Purpose
The paper seeks to provide a comparative analysis of the functionality of five web‐based OPACs available in Indian academic libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
Same‐topic searches were carried out by three researchers on the web‐based OPACs of Libsys, VTLS's iPortal, NewGenLib, Troodon, and Alice for Windows, implemented in five academic libraries in India. Their functionality was compared using criteria selected from the literature on OPAC searching.
Findings
The web‐based OPACs investigated offered a range of facilities for searching by author, title, control number and by keywords. Federated searching across several e‐collections was limited.
Originality/value
This paper should be a useful source of information to librarians who are planning to introduce web‐based OPACs and also for software vendors who wish to improve the functionality of their products.

Abstract
Purpose
This chapter investigates the relationship between abusive supervision and employee well-being (i.e., job satisfaction, engagement) and ill-being (i.e., burnout, workaholism) and examines whether follower core self-evaluations (CSE) moderate this relationship.
Methodology/approach
The study uses cross-sectional survey data collected from 111 professional employees across a range of industry sectors.
Findings
Results show that abusive supervision is negatively related to employee well-being (i.e., engagement and job satisfaction) and positively related to employee ill-being, namely burnout. In addition, employees low in CSE are less engaged and less satisfied than employees high in CSE.
Research limitations/implications
The study’s cross-sectional design limits the strength of its conclusions.
Practical implications
This chapter notes the ethical and legal obligations of organizations to provide a safe working environment and identifies the policies and procedures that will signal a commitment to employee well-being.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the leadership and well-being literatures by exploring the influence of abusive leaders on follower well-being and engagement. It also goes beyond merely identifying correlations between leadership style and follower well-being outcomes to investigate how leader and follower attributes can combine to influence these outcomes.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper (based on the relevant literature) is to: investigate, through empirical analysis, primary school teachers’ perceptions regarding their job satisfaction, and examine whether or not the personal characteristics of primary school educators (such as gender, age, family status, educational level, and the total years of service in public primary education) have any impact on their job satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 360 questionnaires were administered to primary school teachers in the metropolitan area of Athens (region of Attiki). The sample was randomly selected. The questionnaire was based on 41 closed and was divided into two sections. The Job Satisfaction Survey developed by Spector (1985) was implemented.
Findings
Greek school teachers are generally satisfied with their profession. There is no statistical correlation between personal characteristics and the overall satisfaction while indicated that teachers are more satisfied with three aspects (subscales) of job satisfaction, namely, “administration,” “colleagues” and “nature of work” and less satisfied with “salary,” “benefits” and “potential rewards.” Age correlates with the levels of satisfaction with reference to administration, potential rewards, colleagues and the nature of work. The overall satisfaction positively correlates with all nine aspects of job satisfaction (subscales) and gender affects the aspects of “promotion” and “colleagues.”
Research limitations/implications
This study only analyzes a small sample from the Athens region and hence the results cannot be used to generalize about the whole of Greece. Since other Greek regions operate in different socio-economic environments, an analysis of additional data from other regions (rural and urban areas) would be necessary to compare and confirm the results.
Originality/value
The findings of this study a valuable extension of other relevant research as it provides the first empirical study of the Greek school system, investigating the relationship between certain aspects of job satisfaction and the personal characteristics of school educators as well as the relationship between these aspects of job satisfaction and total satisfaction. In the context of efficient educational policy, a greater understanding of educators’ job satisfaction could facilitate the development of more effective policy practice that would increase not only the level of educators’ satisfaction, commitment and morale but also improve the performance of the school system.
