Abstract

Purpose

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized peer‐to‐peer (P2P) approaches to support e‐learning and teaching activity in virtual universities. This paper aims to present the implementation of the JXTA‐based e‐learning P2P system.

Design/methodology/approach

The design and implementation of a smart box environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency is shown. The smart box is integrated with the JXTA‐overlay by using efficient message sending between peers in the system.

Findings

The proposed e‐learning P2P system is a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity.

Research limitations/implications

In the future, other effective stimulation for each learner using IC tag card will be added. Also, the Servo Motor has 12 control ports, so these will be used for implementing other stimulating functions. It is planned to extend the system with functionalities for presence mechanism of students in classrooms and activities.

Practical implications

The proposed system is evaluated by experimental results and it has a good performance.

Originality/value

This paper proposes and implements a novel e‐learning system, which is based on P2P, web and sensor technologies.

Abstract

Purpose

Satellite networking will be an important component of future ubiquitous communications systems. Satellite networks will be especially useful to interconnect remote sensor networks. Therefore, satellite networks should provide the needed QoS, differentiation of services and at the same time keep the required scalability. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new Diffserv‐based scheme of bandwidth allocation during congestion, called proportional allocation of bandwidth (PAB).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper suggests a method for implementing PAB without storing per‐flow state, which makes the scheme scalable and simple and shows, by simulation, the advantages of using PAB in IP satellite networks.

Findings

The paper finds that PAB can be used in geostationary earth orbit, MEO and low earth orbit satellite networks. In PAB, during congestion all flows get a share of IP available bandwidth, which is in proportion to their subscribed information rate.

Originality/value

The simulations described in this paper show that the performance of PAB scheme is good on congested satellite networks.

Abstract

Security in sensor networks is more important than traditional networks as they are deployed in hostile environments and are more prone to capture. Trusted third party authentication schemes, public‐key systems are not suitable owing to their high resource requirements. Key pre‐distribution was introduced in (3) to solve this problem. Our scheme achieves identical connectivity compared to the random key pre distribution (4) using a less number of preloaded keys in each sensor node. The design of our scheme is motivated by the observation that at present most key pre‐distribution schemes employ random mechanisms which use a large number of keys and are unsuitable for sensor networks. In this paper we extend the deterministic key pre‐distribution scheme proposed by us in our earlier work (1), which is based on assigning keys to sensors by placing them on a grid. This approach has been further modified to use multiple mappings of keys to nodes. In each mapping every node gets distinct set of keys which it shares with different nodes. The key assignment is done such that, there will be keys in common between nodes in different sub‐grids. After randomly being deployed, the nodes discover common keys, authenticate and communicate securely. The analysis and simulation results show that this scheme is able to achieve better security compared to the random schemes.

Abstract

Purpose

The growing use of internet-based learning (IBL) platforms in institutions of higher education is producing profound changes in the traditional teaching learning process worldwide. This paper aims to identify and understand the ways in which higher education institutions draw benefits by the use of such means, synthesizing the literature research.

Design/methodology/approach

The study synthesized the literature research by using a mixed method approach in which both Web of Science (WoS) and bibliographic techniques were used to retrieve the relevant data base.

Findings

The comprehensive review of the literature suggests that communication technology (CT), massive open online courseware (MOOCs), social networking sites (SNSs), blogs, real simple syndication (RSS) and YouTube are creating new possibilities and avenues of collaborative learning by transforming the traditional class and teacher-centric system.

Research limitations/implications

Multiplicity of the IBL platforms and rapid technological obsolesce are some of the limitations of this paper.

Originality/value

The findings of this study are highly useful in developing a strategic framework to accelerate the integration of IBL platforms to make teaching learning process more interactive and informative.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the design and implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based e-learning testbed using Raspberry Pi mounted on Raspbian operating system (OS).

Design/methodology/approach

The testbed is composed of five Raspberry Pi B+ computers. The experiments are carried out in the department floor considering an non line of sight (NLoS) environment. Single constant bit rate (CBR) flows were transmitted over user datagram protocol (UDP), and data were collected for five metrics: throughput, packet delivery ratio (PDR), hop count, delay and jitter using the Iperf.

Findings

The implemented testbed was evaluated using experiments. The experimental results showed that the nodes in the testbed were communicating smoothly, and by using attention value, the learner concentration is increased.

Research limitations/implications

The performance of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol was analyzed in a floor environment considering the NLoS scenario. However, this testbed can be implemented to other protocols also.

Originality/value

Because of the opportunities provided by the internet, people are taking advantage of e-learning courses, and enormous research efforts have been dedicated to the development of e-learning systems. To date, many e-learning systems are proposed and used practically. However, in these systems, the e-learning completion rate is low. To deal with this problem, an IoT-based e-learning system was implemented to increase the e-learning completion ratio by increasing the learner concentration.

Abstract

Purpose

Short-term motivation encompasses specific, challenging and attainable goals that develop in the limited timespan. On the other hand, long-term motivation indicates a sort of continuing commitment that is required to complete assigned task. As short-term motivational problems span for a limited period of time, such as a session, therefore, they need to be addressed in real time to keep the learner engaged in the learning process. Similarly, long-term learners’ motivation plays an equally important role to retain the learner in the long run and minimize the risk of dropout. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to incorporate a comprehensive learner motivation model that is based on short-term and long-term aspects of the learners' motivation. This approach enables Web-based educational systems to identify the real-time motivational state of the learner and provide personalized interventions to keep the learners engaged in learning process.

Design/methodology/approach

Recent research regarding personalized Web-based educational systems demonstrates learner’s motivation to be an essential component of the learning model. This is because of the fact that low motivation results in either students’ less engagement or complete drop out from the learning activities. A learner motivation model is considered to be a set of perceptions and beliefs that the system has developed about a learner. This includes both short-term and long-term motivations of leaners.

Findings

This study proposed a framework of a domain independent learners’ motivation model based on firm educational theories. The proposed framework consists of two modules. The primary module deals with real-time identification of motivation and logging off activities such as login, forum participation and adherence to assessment deadline. Secondary module maintains the profile of leaners associated with both short-term and long-term motivation. A study was conducted to verify the impact of learners’ motivation model and personalized interventional strategies based on proposed model, using Systematical Information Education Method assessment standards. The results show an increase in motivational index and the characteristics associated with motivation during the conducted study.

Originality/value

Motivational diagnosis is important for both traditional classrooms and Web-based education systems. It is one of the major elements that contribute in the success of the learning process. However, dropout rate among online students is very high, which leads to incorporate motivational elements in more personalized way because motivated students will retain the course until they successfully complete it. Hence, identifying learner’s motivation, updating learners’ motivation model based on this identification and providing personalized interventions are the key for the success of Web-based educational systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The growing popularity of mobile technology has led governments across the world to develop mobile business models and encouraged the transition from the electronic government (e-government) to the mobile government (m-government). However, only a small amount of data is available regarding m-government implementation in developing countries and users’ behavioural intentions (BIs) with respect to the utilization of such services. To address this issue, this study attempts to identify factors that affect m-government acceptance among citizens of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study aims to examine the relationships between m-government service characteristics and m-government technology characteristics by analysing their perceived ease-of-use, perceived usefulness, user attitudes towards m-government usage and corresponding BIs with respect to utilization of m-government services.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on a quantitative survey conducted among 326 users of m-government services in the UAE. The responses were tabulated on a five-point Likert scale. Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model and verify the hypothesized relationships between its constructs.

Findings

Overall, the research findings indicate that: users’ intention to use m-government applications has three determinants – attitude towards m-government use, m-government ease of use and m-government usefulness; m-government usefulness and ease of use have a significant influence on user attitudes towards m-government; and perceived ease of use of the service, currency of the services, the accuracy of the provided information, the security concerns associated with the utilization of the m-government services, trust in the m-government services and the risks perceived in using the m-Government service are antecedents of users’ perceptions of the m-government services.

Originality/value

This study has improved our understanding of the critical mobile technology factors that are needed to improve user acceptance of m-government services. The study presents important implications for both theory and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a system for automatically forming ad hoc networks using mobile phones and battery-powered wireless routers for emergency situations. The system also provides functions to send emergency messages and identify the location of victims based on the network topology information.

Design/methodology/approach

Optimized link state routing protocol is used to instantly form an ad hoc emergency network based on WiFi signals from mobile phones of the victims, backup battery-powered wireless routers preinstalled in buildings and mobile devices deployed by search and rescue teams. The proposed system is also designed to recover from partial crash of network and nodes lost.

Findings

Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of battery life, transmission distance and noises.

Originality/value

A novel message routing schedule is proposed for conserving battery life. A novel function to estimate the location of a mobile device which sent an emergency message is proposed in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate attributes that influence Airbnb customer experience by analysing online reviews from users staying in London. It presents a text mining approach to identify a set of broad themes from the textual reviews. It aims to highlight the customers’ changing perception of good quality of accommodations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyses 169,666 reviews posted by Airbnb users who stayed in London from 2011 to 2015. Hierarchical clustering algorithms are used to group similar words into clusters based on their co-occurrence. Longitudinal analysis and seasonal analysis are conducted for a more coherent understanding of the Airbnb customer behaviour.

Findings

This paper provides empirical insights about how Airbnb users’ mindset of good quality of accommodations changes over a five-year timespan and in different seasons. While there are common attributes considered important throughout the years, exclusive attributes are discovered in particular years and seasons.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is confined to Airbnb experiences in London. Researchers are encouraged to apply the proposed methodology to investigate Airbnb experiences in other cities and detect any change in customer perception of quality stay.

Practical implications

This paper offers implications for the prioritisation of customer concerns to design and improve services offerings and for alignment of services with customer expectations in the sharing economy.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified need to examine the change in customer expectation across the timespan and seasons in the case of Airbnb. It also contributes by illustrating how big data can be used to uncover key attributes that facilitate the engagement with the sharing economy.
