Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the mediating effect of knowledge management (KM) on organizational learning culture (OLC) in the context of organizational performance of the State Organization for Higher Education (PTN) in South Sulawesi.

Design/methodology/approach

The unit of analysis in this study includes a study program of exact sciences, non-exact science scholars, as well as the study population. Sample size is 138 units/respondents. Analysis method used to test the research hypothesis is partial least square (PLS) by employing XLSTAT.

Findings

The results of analysis show that the exact science, non-exact science, and exact-non-exact OLC have a significant positive effect on KM. This means that when an OLC is strongly implanted, the KM will be well implemented. Therefore, to carry out the KM well, it is imperative that there should be a suitable organizational culture. In this case, an OLC has the biggest effect on achieving organizational performance.

Originality/value

KM in organizations has been researched by performing case studies on sub-companies of a selected corporation in the city of Esfahan and on OLC in a public service organization of Pakistan. This paper claims originality on the basis of the following: variables used are mediating variables of KM, learning organizational culture, and organizational performance; the method used in this research is PLS and the locations used in this study, sites at the State University of Makassar in Indonesia, are unique as they have not been used in any previous studies on this topic.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of learning organizational culture on organizational effectiveness. The study also explores the role of employee work engagement as the intervening mechanism in the learning organizational culture-organizational effectiveness association.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from middle and top managers using the survey approach from the manufacturing and services sectors in India. Structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) were used to analyze the data.

Findings

We found that organizational effectiveness is positively affected by learning organizational culture and that employee work engagement mediates this relationship. Our findings provide an essential building block in the research of learning organizational culture, work engagement and organizational effectiveness.

Originality/value

This study establishes linkages among the variables of interest by examining the impact of a learning organizational culture and work engagement on organizational effectiveness. It augments the existing literature on organizational effectiveness by elucidating the role of a learning organizational culture and work engagement as critical enablers of organizational effectiveness. Additionally, the study furnishes empirical evidence demonstrating the mediating role of work engagement in the relationship between a learning organizational culture and organizational effectiveness.

Last and most importantly sports marketing students would find this case useful. The case study can be taken from a range of angles from consumer behavior, through researching of the same (i.e. consumer behavior); to marketing communications strategies by the football clubs themselves.

Case overview

The case study documents the growth and development of the UAE Professional Football League using the particular case of one of the oldest teams, Sharjah Football Club (also known as Sharjah FC) founded in 1966 – five long years before the Football Association was conceived.

Sports marketers have long sought to better understand the factors that influence attendance at sporting events. This is couched upon the expectations that an understanding of such factors will improve the efficiency of marketing communication between service providers and consumers, and, as Cunningham and Kwon put it, possibly influence the entire marketing program of a sport organisation. Attracting people to the stadium not only increases ticket revenues but also increases supplementary revenue sources, such as parking, concessions and merchandising.

Expected learning outcomes

To understand key aspects of the consumption of sports (i.e. consumer perceptions, attitudes and influences). Readers would also understand the changing aspects of marketing of sports vis-à-vis sports marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

Little research into organizational learning in the public sector in developing countries' is known. In this paper, the authors investigated the context of organizational learning in the public banks in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

An ethnographic field research was employed by spending a month inside each of two public banks in Egypt. The ethnographic experience was operationalised by using direct observations of learning processes, procedures and practices, semi-structured interviews with learning specialists and focus group discussions with bankers. The authors used thematic analysis to determine the main themes in the previous data collection methods of ethnographic approach.

Findings

The findings confirmed a lack of clear focus for the organizational learning practices employed by the banks, which highlights issues of seriousness in undertaking and/or tackling organizational learning, and increased doubts in relation to the added value of the different forms of formal trainings bankers participate in. To enhance the culture and maintain effective functioning of formal organizational learning, the authors suggest considering the following three categories of barriers: purpose-related barriers, implementation and evaluation barriers.

Originality/value

Despite the generalisability caveats associated with the organizations studied, the authors believe that this paper contributes to the existing theory of organizational learning as it provides insights and understanding on the purpose, frame, conduct and results of organizational learning in the public sector. More specifically, the study is unique and is different from previous relevant studies as it relies on ethnographical approach in exploring how organizational leaning practices are perceived in public banks in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to observe the influence of environmental management accounting (EMA) and environmental knowledge management (KM) practices on environmental performance with mediating role of top management support (TMS). Moreover, green work climate perception (GWCP) is used as a moderator between TMS and environmental performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Partial least square-structural equation modeling is used to test research hypotheses. Data was collected to distribute questionnaires in light of the purposive sampling technique; a total of 329 questionnaires were used for final analysis. This study is correlational and cross-sectional. Multiple regression analysis was used to see the influence of EMA, environmental KM practices, TMS and GWCP on environmental performance.

Findings

The results reveal that EMA, environmental KM practices and TMS are positively related to environmental performance. Moreover, TMS significantly mediates between EMA, environmental KM practices and environmental performance. GWCP is positively associated with environmental performance. Finally, GWCP significantly strengthens the positive relationship between TMS and environmental performance.

Practical implications

This study highlighted a significant issue that of how top management uses EMA, environmental KM practices, TMS and GWCP in examining environmental performance. Moreover, this study covers the gap and supports top management to concentrate on exogenous variables to examine environmental performance.

Originality/value

This study adds value to literature to focus on factors that influence environmental performance. This initial research observes the influence of EMA and environmental KM practices on environmental performance with TMS as a mediator in light of the knowledge-based view. Besides, GWCP is used as a moderator between TMS and environmental performance. Finally, our research can provide benefits to researchers, students and managers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to map and analyze the academic production regarding the relationship among organizational culture (OC), corporate social responsibility (CSR) and organizational performance (OP), based on 240 papers listed in the Web of Science (WoS) database.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was performed based on a bibliometric analysis supported by the VOSviewer software, followed by a content analysis of 37 prominent publications.

Findings

The results make it possible to identify the geographical and institutional profile of the production, the level of collaboration and interaction between the researchers and their theoretical base of reference, and to consolidate the main characteristics, trends, and future directions of research in this field.

Practical implications

This study propitiates a vast and practical repertoire that addresses business issues involving the relationship among OC, CSR and OP aiming to help the managers to interpret their local realities and challenges, especially due to positive impacts that such relationship can generate in the business.

Originality/value

A systematic literature review involving specifically the themes of OC, CSR, and OP in a scenario of gradual growth in the number of publications and interest in these themes.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to investigate the serially mediating effect of knowledge management (KM) practices (namely, knowledge creation, storage and sharing) on the organizational learning (OL) and organizational performance (OP) relationships during a crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on theories-of-action, knowledge-based and resource-based theories, this study proposed a sequential mediation model where OL underlying mechanisms through which KM practices have facilitated OP during the crisis. The sample dataset contains 440 responses collected from the managers of the software development companies in Pakistan. The authors used Hayes Process macro with SPSS to test the study hypotheses.

Findings

The results of the study reveal that knowledge creation, storage and sharing serially mediate the relationships between OL and OP. These findings strengthen the argument suggesting that OL plays the key role in KM that helps software companies to mend their performance in times of crisis.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the KM literature in two ways: (1) grounded on the study's proposed framework, organizations can improve and manage their businesses in times of crisis and (2) learn how to generate new knowledge in response to business crises.

研究方法

研究以行為理論、知識基礎理論和資源基礎理論之論據,提出了一個系統化的仲介模型,闡釋知識管理如何在危機中、透過以組織學習為基礎之機制,去促進組織之績效。數據集為取自在巴基斯坦的軟件開發公司工作的主管的440個調查答覆;我們以 Hayes, A. F. 的 PROCESS macro、並附以 SPSS,去測試我們的研究假設。

研究結果

研究結果顯示、知識的創造、儲存和分享,會在組織學習與組織績效之間的聯繫上,起著連續性的仲介效應。知識管理被認為可幫助軟件公司在危機中改善其表現不足之處,而組織學習在知識管理上或許扮演著關鍵的角色。研究結果強化了肯定這個角色的論據。

研究的原創性

本研究對知識管理文獻有兩方面的貢獻: (一)若以本研究提出的框架為基礎,組織可於危機中改善及管理其業務; (二)組織可學習如何創造新的知識,以能應對業務上極其困難的時刻。

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the level of compliance with Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) guidelines in general presentation and disclosure in the financial statements of Fashlowm Islamic branch of the Gumhouria Bank as the biggest bank in Libya.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used two-dimensional analysis, which combines a questionnaire with content analysis. It allowed a better understanding of the picture than would have been provided by the questionnaire alone.

Findings

The results of this study indicate that the level of compliance with AAOIFI guidelines regarding general presentation and disclosure in the financial statements is low. Many reasons were identified as being behind such a low level. The lack of training programmes on AAOIFI standards was at the forefront of these reasons.

Research limitations/implications

The sample is limited to the Fashlowm Islamic branch of Gumhouria Bank. This is may not be true for other branches and banks. Further research is needed in this area.

Originality/value

The AAOIFI has existed for over 20 years, but little empirical research has been conducted into compliance with the standards developed by this body in the Libyan context. This paper helps to address this gap and provide a foundation for future research and development in this area. Moreover, the findings of this study may be useful to policy makers and legislators.
