Abstract

Purpose

Long life and high hydrogen sensitivity are the crucial performance parameters for an optical fiber hydrogen sensing membrane, and these are the fundamental areas of study for an optical fiber hydrogen sensor. Considering that a traditional optical fiber hydrogen sensor based on pure palladium cannot meet the expectations for long life and rapid sensitivity simultaneously, the experiment in this paper designed a kind of reflective optical fiber bundle hydrogen gas sensor based on a Pd0.75Ag0.25 alloy to achieve a hydrogen sensing system. This paper aims to discuss the issues with this system.

Design/methodology/approach

A reflective optical fiber bundle hydrogen sensor was made up of an optical fiber bundle and a Pd0.75Ag0.25 alloy hydrogen membrane. A combination of optical fiber light intensity measurements and the reference calculation method were used to extract the hydrogen concentration information from within the optical fiber, and the relationship between the hydrogen concentration changes and the reflective light intensity in the optical fiber was established.

Findings

The reflective optical fiber bundle hydrogen gas sensor based on a Pd–Ag alloy membrane was shown to provide an effective way to detect hydrogen concentrations. The experimental results showed that a 20-30-nm-thick Pd0.75Ag0.25 alloy membrane could reach high hydrogen absorption and sensitivity. Key preparation parameters which included sputtering time and substrate temperature were used to prepare the hydrogen membrane during the DC sputtering process, and the reflectivity of the Pd–Ag alloy membrane was enough to meet the requirements of long life and high hydrogen sensitivity for the optical fiber hydrogen sensor.

Originality/value

This paper seeks to establish a foundation for optimizing and testing the performance of the Pd–Ag alloy hydrogen sensing membrane for an optical fiber bundle hydrogen sensor. To this end, the optimal thickness and key preparation parameters for the Pd–Ag alloy hydrogen sensing membrane were discussed. The results of this research have proved that the reflective optical fiber hydrogen sensor based on a Pd0.75Ag0.25 alloy is an effective approach and precisely enough for hydrogen gas monitoring in practical engineering measurements.

Abstract

A number of digital libraries have been set up in the course of various research and development activities in different parts of the world during the last few years. How do these digital libraries fair in terms of information retrieval features? This paper looks into this question by reviewing the information retrieval features of 20 digital libraries chosen from around the globe. The first part of the paper briefly describes the features of the chosen digital libraries in terms of their nature and content. The second part looks into the information retrieval features of each digital library. Unique features of some digital libraries have been indicated. Major areas of research that would improve the information retrieval features of the future digital libraries have been indicated.

Abstract

Institutions are collective responses to collective concerns, with the underlying link between concern and response being the purpose of the institution. With this conceptual lens, we analyze the history of the Aktiengesellschaft (AG), which emerged in Austria and Germany around 1800. While any analysis of the organizational features of the form would have diagnosed marked stability over the past two centuries, our historical study reveals significant shifts of the AG’s purpose and meaning: from a vehicle in the service of the public interest, shareholders, and employees to a persona with legitimate self-interests and the will to survive. We suggest to regard such purpose drifts as distinct variant of institutional change. In addition, we conclude that the AG’s essentially political actorhood institutionalizes the ever fragile and delicate quest for a balance between the different legitimate interests on whose behalf a corporation acts (including those of the self). Such a view, we argue, can offer a future for the corporation as organizational form.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the squeezing flow of hybrid nanofluid within the two parallel disks. The 50:50% water–ethylene glycol mixture is used as a base fluid to prepare Ag–Fe_3O_4 hybrid nanofluid. Entropy generation analysis is examined by using the second law of thermodynamics, and Darcy’s modal involves estimating the behavior of a porous medium. The influences of Viscous dissipation, Joule heating and thermal radiation in modeling are further exerted into concern.

Design/methodology/approach

For converting partial differential systems to ordinary systems, a transformation technique is used. For the validation part, the numerical solution is computed by embracing a fourth-order exactness program (bvp4c) and compared with the analytical solution added by the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical decisions expose the values of miscellaneous-arising parameters on the velocity, temperature and local-Nusselt numbers.

Findings

Hybrid nanofluid gives significant enhancement in the rate of heat transfer compared with nanofluid. The outcomes indicate that the average Nusselt number and entropy generation are increasing functions of the magnetic field, porosity and Brinkman number. When the thermal radiation rises, the average Nusselt number diminishes and the entropy generation advances. Furthermore, combining silver and magnetite nanoparticles into the water–ethylene glycol base fluid significantly enhances entropy generation performance.

Originality/value

Entropy generation analysis of the magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) fluid squeezed between two parallel disks by considering Joule heating, viscous dissipation and thermal radiation for different nanoparticles is addressed. Furthermore, an appropriate agreement is obtained in comparing the numerical results with previously published and analytical results.
