Abstract

PROBABLY one of the most remarkable features of our generation has been the ability of the metallurgist to produce alloys meeting the current needs of industry in providing the requisite mechanical characteristics, capabilities of being manipulated or fashioned by established methods, and in particular instances, specific properties of resistance to erosion, corrosion, wear, impact and fatigue. Perhaps this adaptability is best exemplified in the case of light alloys, whereby scientific alloying of aluminium or magnesium bases with other elements, combined with specific thermal treatments, have imparted increased strength, durability, and, under limited conditions, resistance to corrosion, to a whole range of alloys without any appreciable sacrifice of the great advantage in initial lightness of these two base metals. In view of this, these metals, which are conveniently designated “light alloys,” have become exceedingly popular, particularly since the majority of them are eminently suitable for fabrication in the form of diecastings, which permit the reproducibility of exact forms in large quantity production. The mechanical features of light alloys, together with their capacity to be machined, or otherwise finished to shape and dimensions, are fairly widely known, but their ability and relative merits to resist various conditions of corrosive influence are not so clearly elucidated. The readers of this journal arc naturally concerned primarily with finishes of protective value rather than with those of decorative importance. In general engineering considerable confusion exists as to the behaviour of aluminium and its alloys under deleterious influences, and this tends to retard their general adoption, even though their individual mechanical properties may make them highly desirable. In some cases most unnecessarily elaborate finishes are applied for ultra precautionary purposes, while in others a complete ban is exercised rather than incur any risk. In the aircraft industry, on the other hand, the demand for minimum weight consistent with requisite strength has provided the impetus for their adoption, which in turn has led to the development of appropriate finishing methods. Even in this sphere a comparative survey of finishing methods and their efficiency covering a range of popular alloys should prove to be of interest.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming and powder metallurgy are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on the subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for the last five years, and more than 1100 references are listed.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming, powder metallurgy and composite material processing are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for 1994‐1996, where 1,370 references are listed. This bibliography is an updating of the paper written by Brannberg and Mackerle which has been published in Engineering Computations, Vol. 11 No. 5, 1994, pp. 413‐55.

The bibliography at the end of the paper contains references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations on the subject that were published between 1977‐1998. Abstract

Investigates the differences in protocols between arbitral tribunals and courts, with particular emphasis on US, Greek and English law. Gives examples of each country and its way of using the law in specific circumstances, and shows the variations therein. Sums up that arbitration is much the better way to gok as it avoids delays and expenses, plus the vexation/frustration of normal litigation. Concludes that the US and Greek constitutions and common law tradition in England appear to allow involved parties to choose their own judge, who can thus be an arbitrator. Discusses e‐commerce and speculates on this for the future.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism in Malaysia and Turkey. It also investigates the extent to which non-Muslim tourists are willing to purchase certain types of halal products and services.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative data were collected by conducting 35 semi-structured interviews with non-Muslim tourists in Malaysia and another 25 in Turkey.

Findings

Six major aspects are identified that describe the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism. This paper also provides some suggestions for destination marketers on how best to cater for Western tourists and increase international arrivals.

Originality/value

This paper explores the perceptions of non-Muslim tourists towards halal tourism which is totally new research in destination marketing. It provides some original insights into the interactions between the religion of Islam and non-Muslim tourists. The insight should be of value to authorities, the industry and academics in both the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds.

Abstract

Discussion of sexuality and its expression is commonplace. Looking in a newspaper or turning on the television provides evidence of this. It is also a topic of discussion among academics from various backgrounds. However, in relation to people with learning disabilities, such discussion is often framed in negative terms and is concerned with such things as abuse, HIV and STIs, ‘unwanted’ pregnancy and challenging sexual behaviour. There is little published research into the question of how men and women with learning disabilities experience their sexuality or sexual identity. This study sought to explore how a group of men with learning disabilities in South Wales experienced their sexuality and sexual identity, using an interpretative phenomenological analysis. It found that, although the participants saw themselves as sexual beings, their opportunities for expressing their sexuality were often limited and controlled by others. It also found that the participants saw themselves more in terms of their ‘differences’ from other men than of their similarities. Recommendations for changes in practice and policy that may facilitate the appropriate expression of sexuality by men with learning disabilities are made.
