Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to reveal the food preferences and to define the typology of digital nomads as gastro-tourists. In this context, it is aimed to provide information on issues such as the importance of food culture in destination selection for digital nomads, food prices, local dishes, local food markets, religious restrictions, researching cultural cuisines, preparing meals and participating in gastronomic events.

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple qualitative methods were utilized in the research for this study. Digital nomads' comments, videos and semi-structured interviews constitute the data sources of the research, and the data obtained were analyzed by content analysis.

Findings

As a result of the study, it was seen that digital nomads do consider gastronomy in their destination selection, and five different gastro-tourist profiles were determined. These are Local Flavor Hunters, Gastronomy Adventurers, Budget-Conscious Food Lovers, Cultural Explorers and Health and Sustainability Focused People.

Originality/value

The theoretical contribution of the study is to provide information with regard to the food and beverage preferences of digital nomads and to contribute to filling a gap in the literature. The practical contribution of the study is to help formulate tourism marketing strategies in the destination and strategies for businesses in the tourism industry. Since digital nomads play important roles in destination promotion, it is important to determine their perspectives and typologies towards gastronomy. The results of the study will be useful for tourism industry components, such as academics, experts, travel businesses, tourism destinations and local food producers who research the tourism industry and travel trends.

Abstract

Inefficiencies in the fiscal and monetary systems of the Ottoman Empire led to a higher debt burden over time and the bankruptcy for the Ottoman state in 1875. To deal with these inefficiencies, reforms were implemented: supervisory organizations were established and the gold standard was adopted. How did investors at the Istanbul Bourse view these reforms? We manually collected data on the price of Ottoman government bonds on the Bourse from 1873 to 1883. Using the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) methodology, we identify short-run and permanent changes in volatility of bond returns subsequent to the reforms. Our results suggest investors responded positively, by accepting lower yield premia, to adoption of the gold standard, and foundation of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration which had European sponsors, but did not respond positively to reforms that relied on purely local institutions.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide visitors with a variety of experiences, tourism is a collection of activities that might leave a lasting impact on them. Anticipating and understanding what makes visitors memorable can give destinations and tourism marketers a competitive advantage. Regarding this, the purpose of this study is to investigate the memorable tourism experiences of international tourists who have visited the Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar in Istanbul.

Design/methodology/approach

The comments made by travelers from abroad on TripAdvisor following their experiences were examined using a netnographic analysis methodology. The data were collected from the most recent to the oldest comments posted on tourist experiences about historical Egyptian (spice) bazaar (n: 825).

Findings

In line with the findings obtained from the reviews examined, six components were determined that make the tourists’ experiences memorable: ambience (1), novelty (2), hedonism (3), local culture (4), knowledge (5) and price (6).

Originality/value

The memorable Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar experiences of international tourists analyzed within the scope of the research were in line with the dimensions of novelty, hedonism, knowledge and local culture of the study conducted by (Kim & Ritchie, 2014); ambience and product price were found to be the two different dimensions. It can be stated that results of the study can help to develop effective strategies to improve the competitiveness of the destination.
