Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine whether and how abusive supervision climate impacts team conflict from a mindfulness perspective. Prior research has identified serious dysfunctional effects of abusive supervision climate in teams. Team conflict, which is often a signal for dysfunctional relationships in teams, has however received limited attention. To contribute to this line of research, this study develops and tests a theoretical model on the role of team mindfulness in understanding the link between abusive supervision climate and task, process, and relationship conflict.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the theoretical model, this study collected and analyzed two-wave time-lagged data from 499 employees in 92 teams.

Findings

The results showed that abusive supervision climate aggravated task conflict and process conflict via diminishing levels of team mindfulness. Abusive supervision climate also exacerbated relationship conflict, but the effects did not occur via a decrease in team mindfulness.

Practical implications

While it may not always be possible to prevent the development of an abusive supervision climate in workplaces, other interventions may prevent conflict in teams with abusive leaders. As indicated by the findings, task conflict and process conflict may be reduced if teams are high on mindfulness. Interventions that stimulate team mindfulness might thus improve collaboration in teams with abusive leaders.

Originality/value

This research offers novel insights regarding how abusive leaders might instigate conflict within teams. Specifically, through the unique perspective of mindfulness, the authors are able to offer new insights into how abusive supervision climate affects task, process and relationship conflict. This study offers a novel, yet important, lens to examine how conflict occurs in teams.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of service quality on the formation of destination brand equity through customer satisfaction at a winery, from the perspective of Chinese wine tourists.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilized a survey research design. A convenience sample of 311 visitors to a major winery located in Yantai, China, was surveyed, and 265 useable questionnaires were analyzed. To analyze the data, the study used partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The results of the study reveal that service quality at a winery is a significant determinant of winery satisfaction among Chinese wine tourists, which in turn affects the brand equity of a wine tourism destination.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the growing body of literature focusing on identity-based branding in the context of wine tourism. As such, this study brings together knowledge of a place branding dimension (i.e. destination brand equity), satisfaction and tourism experience at a winery.

Practical implications

The results suggest that the road to favorable assessments of a wine destination brand (macro level) go through a satisfying experience at a winery (micro level). Therefore, the need to co-create the wine experience through various stakeholders' involvement is crucial for the success of wine tourism.

Originality/value

Extant wine studies often highlight western wine tourists' behavior and examine central behavioral constructs such as winery service quality and satisfaction. This study extends previous research by: (1) investigating the issue from Chinese wine tourists' perspective and (2) integrating the destination brand equity of a wine region to current investigations that commonly focus on the service quality of a winery and wine tourists' satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the effect of frontline employees' emotional labor (surface acting vs. deep acting) on customer satisfaction and the moderating role of responsibility attributions in the situation of robot service failure.

Design/methodology/approach

The scenario-based experimental method was designed to perform hypothesis testing and SPSS was used to analyze the data from the 363 questionnaires collected.

Findings

The results indicate that (1) employees' emotional labor recovery has a double-edged sword effect. Deep acting improves customer satisfaction, while surface acting undermines the effectiveness of service recovery and leaves customer satisfaction below previous levels. (2) Customers' responsibility attributions for service failure moderate the effect of service recovery.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to focus on the role of frontline employees' emotional labor in robot service failure contexts, which not only enriches and expands the relevant literature in this domain, but also deepens the understanding of how emotional labor and responsibility attribution effect the customer satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the forming efficiency and quality of unequal-width parts fabricated by laser direct metal deposition technology, some experiments were designed.

Design/methodology/approach

A new method by varying laser spot was adopted to fabricate unequal-width single track using one scanning rather than multi-track overlapping in the way of the inside-beam powder feeding, and the thin-walled parts were fabricated layer by layer. The theoretical model among layer thickness of z-axis, height of single track and the section curve order of single track was established.

Findings

The top surface unevenness of the thin-walled parts could be compensated automatically within the laser defocusing ranges from −2.5 to −5 mm and from 0.5 to 2.5 mm. The growth rate with the large width/height ratio was more than the small ratio, while the set height of the single track was uniform. The problem of non-uniform growth rate could be solved based on a stepped single-track method. The thin-walled parts with the smooth top surface was fabricated layer by layer which had a continuously variable width from 1 to 3 mm by splicing the laser defocusing range.

Practical implications

The shapes of the to-be-fabricated parts affect variable laser spot process in practical applications. For example, it will be difficult to apply variable laser spot process on the parts with the hole features.

Originality/value

This paper provided a guidance for forming unequal-width parts by laser direct metal deposition based on the inside-beam powder feeding.

Abstract

This paper aims to compare the Greek and Chinese rhetorical traditions and explore their influences on today’s business and marketing communication across relevant cultures. In particular, it uses the Aristotelian persuasive orientations as reference points to introduce the Chinese rhetoric, and interpret cultural differences in persuasion from a historical and sociocultural perspective. It has been found that Greek and Chinese rhetoric and persuasion were developed to meet the needs of the social and cultural environments and this rule still applies to today’s business communication. The logical approach has been emphasised in the English rhetorical tradition while both qing (emotional approach) and li (logical approach) are the focus of persuasion in the Chinese tradition. This difference is also the root of cultural differences in modern business communication. Findings from both English and Chinese texts and data are examined to substantiate our focal argument.

Abstract

Purpose

Because online shopping is risky, there is a strong need to develop better presentation of online reviews, which may reduce the perceived risk and create more pleasurable shopping experiences. To test the impact of online reviews’ sentiment polarity presentation, the purpose of this paper is to adopt a scenario experiment to study consumers’ decision-making process under the two scenarios of mixed presentation and classified presentation of online reviews collected from Jingdong.com in China: focusing on the comparative analysis on the differences of the consumers’ perceived risk, purchase intention and purchase delay, and further studying the interaction effect of involvement and online reviews’ sentiment polarity presentation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper employed a 2×2 factorial experiment to test the hypothesis. The experimental design is divided into four groups: 2 (online reviews’ sentiment polarity presentation: mixed presentation vs classified presentation) × 2 (involvement: low vs high), each of which contains 90 samples. Through the data analysis, the main effect, mediation effect and moderating effect were examined.

Findings

The results show that compared with mixed presentation, classified presentation can reduce purchase intention and increase purchase delay due to the existence of loss aversion and availability heuristic. Furthermore, the paper also confirms that there is a significant interaction effect between involvement and online reviews’ sentiment polarity presentation.

Originality/value

The existing research pays less attention to the impact of online reviews presentation on consumers’ decision making, especially the lack of discussion on the interaction effect between involvement and online reviews presentation. For this reason, this paper proposes a problem, which concerns whether mixed presentation and classified presentation of online reviews will affect consumers’ decision making differently.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in informal copycat-style firms. As a kind of informal economical organizations, copycat-style firms in many emerging economies play an important role in their development of the economics. The development of Shanzhai firms, Chinese-style copycat firms, from imitation to innovation has become an important micro-foundation of China’s economic growth and the manufacturing development. With the cluster development of the Chinese mobile phone industry as the macro and industrial environment background, this paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company by adopting the leading-edge dynamic capability theory, innovation theory and industrial cluster theory. The authors further discussed how to improve the dynamic capabilities in Shanzhai firms in China.

Findings

It is finally suggested that Shanzhai firms should reduce innovation failures and lower damage degree of dynamic capabilities through consistent innovation and paying attention to their innovation improvement.

Originality/value

It will be very significant to research the survival or diminishing of Shanzhai firms from a theoretical perspective, which will eventually enhance property right protection and innovation development in China.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the short- and long-lived effects of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) mandate on the quality of reporting information of initial public offering (IPO) firms in emerging market economies.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used several difference-in-differences models for a sample comprising 102 Saudi Arabian IPO firms for 2003–2017.

Findings

It found that mandating the application of the IFRS had a significant short-lived but no long-lived effect on IPO firms’ information asymmetry. When information asymmetry was high such as in the primary market, the IFRS succeeded in alleviating the underpricing of IPO firms. Conversely, in the secondary market, with negligible information asymmetry, the IFRS was not beneficial for the long-term performance of companies in the IPO market.

Originality/value

This study is the first of its kind in the emerging market context and has important implications for IPO investors and analysts, IFRS-IPO researchers and policymakers in emerging economies. The results empirically confirmed that the IFRS mandate had solely a short-lived effect and no long-lasting impact, on the problem of asymmetric information in the IPO market. The effectiveness of the IFRS in producing quality financial reporting is contingent upon large-scale information asymmetry and vanishes when investors and analysts have abundant information about listed firms, even for emerging economies such as Saudi Arabia.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on studying the addition of nano-tungsten disulfide (WS2) on fretting wear performance of ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE).

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the effect of WS2 content on fretting wear performance of UHMWPE was investigated. The fretting wear performance of the UHMWPE and WS2/UHMWPE nanocomposites were evaluated on oscillating reciprocating friction and wear tester. The data of the friction coefficient and the specific wear rate were obtained. The worn surfaces of composites were observed. The transfer film and its component were analyzed.

Findings

With the addition of 0.5% WS2, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate increased. With the content increased to 1% and 1.5%, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate decreased. The lowest friction coefficient and specific wear rate were obtained with the addition of 1.5% nano-WS2. Continuingly increasing content, the friction coefficient and wear rate increased but lower than that of pure UHMWPE.

Research limitations/implications

The research indicated the fretting wear performance related to the content of nano-WS2 with the incorporation of WS2 into UHMWPE.

Practical implications

The result may help to choose the appropriate content.

Originality/value

The main originality of the research is to reveal the fretting behavior of UHMWPE and WS2/UHMWPE nanocomposites. It makes us realize the nano-WS2 had an effect on the fretting wear performance of UHMWPE.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the fretting wear performance of ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethene (UHMWPE) with addition of GO and SiO2.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, GO were synthesized and SiO2 nanoparticles were grafted onto GO. The effect of nanofiller on fretting wear performance of UHMWPE was investigated.

Findings

The results indicated that GO was successfully synthesized and SiO2 nanoparticles successfully grafted onto GO. Incorporation of GS was beneficial for the reduction in friction and the improvement in wear resistance of UHMWPE. GO was beneficial for reducing friction coefficient, while SiO2 was good for improving wear resistance. There existed a tribological synergistic effect between GO nanosheet and SiO2 nanoparticles.

Research limitations/implications

The hybrids of GS were promising nanofiller for improving the fretting wear performance of UHMWPE.

Originality/value

The main originality of the research is to reveal the effect of GO and SiO2 nanoparticles on fretting behavior of UHMWPE. The result indicated hybrids of GS were promising nanofiller for improving the fretting wear performance of UHMWPE.
