Abstract

Purpose

Fault-related monitoring variables selection is a process of obtaining a subset of variables from the original set, which is of great significance for reducing information redundancy and improving the performance of the fault diagnosis models. This paper aims to propose a novel variables selection approach based on complex networks.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, a dual-layer correlation networks (DlCN) which consists of mechanism-oriented correlation sub-network (MoCSN) and data-oriented correlation sub-network (DoCSN) is constructed. Secondly, an algorithm for identifying critical fault-related monitoring variables based on dual correlations is introduced. In the algorithm, the topological attributes of the MoCSN and correlation threshold of the DoCSN are used successively.

Findings

In the experiments of vertical elevator fault diagnosis, the critical fault-related monitoring variables selected by the DlCN-based approach is more effective than the traditional approaches. It indicates that fusion mechanism-oriented correlation can enhance the comprehensiveness of variable correlation analysis. Moreover, the approach has been proved to be adaptable to different fault diagnosis models.

Originality/value

In the DlCN-based variables selection approach, the mechanism-oriented correlation and data-oriented correlation are comprehensively considered. It improves the precision of variables selection. Meanwhile, it is an unsupervised and model-agnostic approach which addresses the shortcomings of some conventional approaches that require data labels and have insufficient adaptability for fault diagnosis models.

Abstract

Purpose

Legislation plays an essential role in addressing climate change in China. However, many barriers to formulating national legislation to address climate change have so far prevented its enactment. The bottom-up approach adopted in the international climate regime sets a good example. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the regional legislation to address climate change in China through exploring the following two questions: whether it is necessary to enact climate change legislation at regional level first and whether it is feasible to develop such regional legislation in the absence of national climate change law.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyses the necessity and feasibility of regional legislation to address climate change. Section 2 introduces the current legislative framework on climate change in China. Section 3 investigates whether it is better to push the legislative agenda at regional, rather than national level. Section 4 analyses the feasibility of establishing regional legislative systems. Section 5 explores the key issues in formulating and promoting regional legislation.

Findings

This paper concludes that it is necessary and feasible to pilot regional legislation before enacting national legislation. Under these circumstances, local governments can take the initiative to begin formulating regional legislation.

Originality/value

Addressing climate change needs immediate action and effective measures. It is, thus, necessary to reconsider the approach that China should adopt when developing legislation on climate change. This paper contributes to broadening current knowledge of regional climate change legislation in China.

Abstract

Purpose

With the advancement of technology, microlearning has emerged as a promising method to improve the efficacy of teaching and learning. This study aims to investigate the document types, volume, growth trajectory, geographic contribution, coauthor relationships, prominent authors, research groups, influential documents and publication outlets in the microlearning literature.

Design/methodology/approach

We adapt the PRISMA guidelines to assess the eligibility of 297 Scopus-indexed documents from 2002 to 2021. Each was manually labeled by educational level. Descriptive statistics and science mapping were conducted to highlight relevant objects and their patterns in the knowledge base.

Findings

This study confirms the increasing trend of microlearning publications over the last two decades, with conference papers dominating the microlearning literature (178 documents, 59.86%). Despite global contributions, a concentrated effort from scholars in 15 countries (22.39%) yielded 68.8% of all documents, while the remaining papers were dispersed across 52 other nations (77.61%). Another significant finding is that most documents pertain to three educational level categories: lifelong learning, higher education and all educational levels. In addition, this research highlights six key themes in the microlearning domain, encompassing (1) Design and evaluation of mobile learning, (2) Microlearning adaptation in MOOCs, (3) Language teaching and learning, (4) Workflow of a microlearning system, (5) Microlearning content design, (6) Health competence and health behaviors. Other aspects analyzed in this study include the most prominent authors, research groups, documents and references.

Originality/value

The finding represents all topics at various educational levels to offer a comprehensive view of the knowledge base.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper reviews literature on the application of intelligent systems in the libraries with a special issue on the ES/AI and Robot. Also, it introduces the potential of libraries to use intelligent systems, especially ES/AI and robots.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive and content review methods are applied, and the researchers critically reviewed the articles related to library ESs and robots from Web of Science as a general database and Emerald as a specific database in library and information science from 2007–2017. Four scopes considered to classify the articles as technology, service, user and resource. It is found that published researches on the intelligent systems have contributed to many librarian purposes like library technical services like the organization of information resources, storage and retrieval of information resources, library public services as reference services, information desk and other purposes.

Findings

A review of the previous studies shows that ESs are a useable intelligent system in library and information science that mimic librarian expert’s behaviors to support decision making and management. Also, it is shown that the current information systems have a high potential to be improved by integration with AI technologies. In this researches, librarian robots mostly designed for detection and replacing books on the shelf. Improving the technology of gripping, localizing and human-robot interaction are the main concern in recent librarian robot research. Our conclusion is that we need to develop research in the area of smart resources.

Originality/value

This study has a new approach to the literature review in this area. We compared the published papers in the field of ES/AI and robot and library from two databases, general and specific.

Abstract

Purpose

There exists a phenomenon called students’ negative attitude toward mathematics, leading to a decline in students’ performance in mathematics and influencing their decisions to refrain from pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) majors and careers. Studies show that using technology in education can reduce anxiety toward mathematics by increasing students’ motivation to explore and appreciate mathematics. Conversational agents (CAs), automated software that interacts with users via natural language, can be used in education to support teaching and learning. Unfortunately, despite its nearly 60-year history, the application of this technology in the education domain is still scarce. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating CA on students’ attitude toward mathematics.

Design/methodology/approach

To compare the impact of different teaching methods, students were randomly divided into two groups: a control group receiving only traditional classroom instruction and an experimental group receiving traditional instruction combined with interaction with a CA. After that, they participated in a five-point Likert scale questionnaire on attitude toward mathematics.

Findings

The findings revealed that integrating CA in mathematics teaching and learning significantly reduced experimental students’ anxiety toward mathematics while there was no improvement shown in the importance of mathematics.

Originality/value

The integration of features such as experiential learning, social dialogue, affective learning and scaffolding makes this CA a comprehensive tool for promoting personalized and engaging learning experiences among students thus reducing students’ anxiety and increasing their overall confidence toward mathematics.
