Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication properties of surface-textured rollers as well as the effect of different crown widths (dw) on oil film thickness under textured conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The laser processing method was used to make the micro-texture on the surface of GCr15 steel rollers; lithium grease was used as the lubricant, and line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication experiments under pure sliding conditions were performed on light interference elastohydrodynamic-lubricated experimental table.

Findings

The results show that the line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication is closely related to the textured crown width of steel rollers. At low speeds and light loads, texturing has an inevitable inhibitory effect on the formation of the lubricating oil film, and the smaller the width of the crown area, the more obvious the inhibitory effect, which is not conducive to the improvement of the lubrication condition. At high speeds and high loads, the textured roller with dw = 1 mm has the largest oil film thickness and shows better lubrication performance.

Originality/value

At present, there is little research on the surface texture of line-contact friction pairs. This work explores the effect of different textured crown width on the lubricating properties of line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication by experiment. It provides a new theoretical basis for the subsequent practical application of surface texture technology.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new folding method for modeling complicated folded fabric with surfaces of revolution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a new folding method for modeling complicated folded fabric with surfaces of revolution.

Design/methodology/approach

Irregular wrinkles and mesh distortions easily appear in the fold modeling of a complex curved surface. Aimed at this key technical problem, the segmentation mapping folding method (SMFM) is proposed in this paper. First, high-precision flattened planes were obtained by using segmentation mapping techniques. Second, the segmented planes were transformed into a folded and continuous geometric model by using matrix transformations. Finally, initial stress was used to modify the geometric folding errors, which ensured agreement with the inflated flexible fabric’s geometry and the original design.

Findings

Compared with the traditional folding method, SMFM has the advantages of good finite-element mesh quality, large radial compression rate, regular folds, etc. The surface area error and the volume error of the inflated single torus established by SMFM were only 1.2 per cent, showing that SMFM has high modeling accuracy. The numerical results of an inflatable re-entry vehicle are presented to demonstrate the reliability, feasibility and applicability of SMFM. Moreover, the stress modification reduced the problems of stress concentration and mesh distortions, improving the accuracy and stability of the numerical calculations.

Originality/value

In this paper, for the first time, a folding method for modeling complicated folded fabric is proposed. This methodology can be used to model the multidimensional compression and regular folds of complex surfaces of revolution that cannot be flattened and to improve the accuracy and stability of the numerical calculations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find optimal reef parameters to minimize the maximum instantaneous opening load for a reefed parachute with geometry and environmental parameters given in the model.

Design/methodology/approach

The dynamic model Drop Test Vehicle Simulation (DTVSim) is used to model the inflation and descent of the reefed parachute system. It is solved by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method, and the opening load values are thereby obtained. A parallel genetic algorithm (GA) code is developed to optimize the reefed parachute. A penalty scheme is used to have the maximum dynamic pressure restricted within a certain range.

Findings

The simulation results from DTVSim fit well with experimental data from drop tests, showing that the simulator has high accuracy. The one-stage and two-stage reefed parachute systems are optimized by GA and their maximum opening loads are decreased by 43 and 25 per cent, respectively. With the optimal reef parameters, two of the peaks in the opening load curve are almost equal. The velocity, loiter time and flight path angle of the parachute system all change, but these changes have no negative effect on the parachute’s operational performance.

Originality/value

An optimization method for reefed parachute design is proposed for the first time. This methodology can be used in the preliminary design phase for a reefed parachute system and significantly improve design efficiency.

The purpose of this study is to model the dynamic characteristics of an opened supersonic disk-gap-band parachute.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to model the dynamic characteristics of an opened supersonic disk-gap-band parachute.

Design/methodology/approach

A fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method with body-fitted mesh is used to simulate the supersonic parachute. The compressible flow is modeled using large-eddy simulation (LES). A contact algorithm based on the penalty function with a virtual contact domain is proposed to solve the negative volume problem of the body-fitted mesh. Automatic unstructured mesh generation and automatic mesh moving schemes are used to handle complex deformations of the canopy.

Findings

The opened disk-gap-band parachute is simulated using Mach 2.0, and the simulation results fit well with the wind tunnel test data. It is found that the LES model can successfully predict large-scale turbulent vortex in the flow. This study also demonstrates the capability of the present FSI method as a tool to predict shock oscillation and breathing phenomenon of the canopy.

Originality/value

The contact algorithm based on the penalty function with a virtual contact domain is proposed for the first time. This methodology can be used to solve the negative volume problem of the dynamic mesh in the flow field.

This paper extends our understanding of the concept and global practice of political economy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper extends our understanding of the concept and global practice of political economy.

Approach

The paper sets out the limits of conceptual analysis regarding political economy. It then applies Heidegger’s theory of metaphysics to the cultures of China and the West.

Findings

It is possible to construct an account of Confucianism metaphysics which contrasts with modern western metaphysics. The paper suggests some implications of the contrast.

Research limitations

The paper is exploratory and broad-brush. It suggests the potential of further systematic enquiries.

Practical implications

National and business leaders seek to understand the global business environment. This requires insights into the nature of culture and the foundations of cultures. The paper provides a way to make sense of national aspirations and global political/business responses to changed circumstances.

Originality

The paper continues a research programme which seeks to explicate Chinese decision-making and relate it to the western decision-making. It is the first paper to use Heidegger’s concept of metaphysics in relation to Confucianism.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the direct synthesis of imino methyl ether amino resin using commercially available formaldehyde, melamine and methanol through one-step two-stage catalysis.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, melamine undergoes a reaction with formaldehyde to form hydroxylmethylation melamine in a basic setting. Subsequently, hydrochloric acid is incorporated to facilitate the etherification process. The study delves into the impact of various factors during the etherification phase, including the quantity of methanol, the temperature at which etherification occurs, the number of etherification cycles and the amount of catalyst used, on the synthesis of imino methyl-etherified amino resins. Ultimately, the most favorable conditions for etherification are identified through comparative analysis to evaluate the resulting synthesized products.

Findings

The methyl-etherified amino resin, characterized by a stable structure and consistent performance, was efficiently synthesized through a one-step, two-stage catalytic process. Optimal conditions for the etherification stage were determined to be a reaction temperature of 35°C, a melamine to methanol ratio of 1:24 and an addition of hydrochloric acid ranging from 2.2 mL to 2.5 mL. Remarkably, the resulting resin notably enhanced the water resistance, salt resistance and gloss of the canned iron printing varnish coatings.

Originality/value

Amino resins, known for their broad applications across numerous industries, face sustainability and operational efficiency hurdles when produced through traditional methods, which predominantly involve the use of a 37% formaldehyde solution. To tackle these issues, our research introduces an innovative method that add 37% formaldehyde to facilitate industrial production. The use of 37% liquid formaldehyde in this paper has two benefits: first, it is convenient for industrial application and production; Second, it is convenient to provide mild reaction conditions at lower concentrations because the amino group is relatively active, which is convenient for the preservation of the amino group and integrates it with a one-step, two-stage catalytic process. The primary objective of our study is threefold: to reduce the environmental footprint of amino resin synthesis, to optimize the use of resources and to improve the economic viability for its large-scale production. By employing this new strategy, we try to provide a more sustainable and efficient manufacturing process for amino resins.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to design a most demanding low profile and compact ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna system for various wireless applications. The performance (in terms of data rate) of UWB system is improved by using multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology with it. Owing to the overlap of other existing licensed bands with that of UWB, electromagnetic signals can interfere. So, notched band UWB MIMO antenna system reported here which is highly compact, bandwidth efficient, superior data rate and high inter-element isolation comparatively to other reported designs.

Design/methodology/approach

A 49 × 49 × 1.6 mm3 quad-port UWB MIMO antenna with specific bandwidth elimination property is designed. The proposed planar MIMO configuration comprises unique four identical “Cordate-shaped” monopole radiators fed by 2.3-mm thick microstrip-lines. The radiators are located right-angled to each other to enhance inter-element isolation. Further, a different approach of slitted-substrate is applied to minimize the overall size and mutual coupling of the MIMO antenna, as a substitute of decoupling and matching structures. The defected ground structure is used to obtain −10 dB impedance bandwidth in entire UWB band, without compromising with the lower cut-off frequency response. Further, to eliminate the undesired resonant band (WLAN at 5.5 GHz) from UWB, a rounded split ring resonator is introduced in monopole patch.

Findings

In the entire operating band of 2.8 to 11 GHz, isolation among elements is more than 24 dB, envelope correlation coefficient less than 0.002, diversity gain greater than 9.99 dB and TARC less than −7 dB are obtained at all 4-ports.

Research limitations/implications

The measured parameters of the fabricated prototype antenna on FR4 substrate are found in good agreement with the simulated results. The small variation in software results and hardware results are observed due to hardware design limitations.

Practical implications

The proposed design may be used for any wireless application following in the range of UWB.

Originality/value

It can be shown from graphs of measured parameters of the fabricated prototype antenna. They found to be in good agreement with the simulated results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the inhibition efficiency and mechanism of a specific carboxylate corrosion inhibitor which consists of benzoic acid and dimethylethanolamine on steel surface.

Design/methodology/approach

The performance of carbon steel influenced by this organic inhibitor under different concentration of Cl and immersion time was studied by linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution. The surface morphology and composition of steel was also analyzed by optical microscopy, SEM and EDS to investigate the effect of inhibitor on the pattern of the steel surface after long-term immersion.

Findings

Carboxylate of benzoic acid and dimethylethanolamine can increase the chloride threshold level and decrease the corrosion area of carbon steel in SCP solution with 0.6 mol/L Cl even after 120 days exposure. The inhibition mechanism of inhibitor lies in quick adsorption and buffering effect at initial time then formed deposited layer on steel surface after long-term immersion in chloride-rich environment.

Originality/value

It demonstrated that the carboxylate corrosion inhibitor not only can improve the chloride threshold level for carbon steel but also effectively decrease the corrosion rate even in chloride-rich SCP solution after long-term immersion, which is different form the conventional amino alcohol.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite servitization being widely regarded as an essential catalyst to improve manufacturing firms' survival and competitiveness, how to attain servitization remains debatable. The primary objective of this research is to explore whether or not, how, and when the dynamic capabilities affect servitization in the digital economy background. This research investigates the relationships between servitization and dynamic capabilities by incorporating firm ownership, firm lifecycle stage, digital economy level and environmental uncertainty as contingency factors in the research framework.

Design/methodology/approach

This research develops and verifies a conceptual framework for manufacturing servitization by employing the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) in analyzing the secondary longitudinal data from 148 China-listed manufacturing firms involved in servitization from 2015 to 2020.

Findings

The analytical results of fsQCA identify several configurational solutions for the success of manufacturing servitization. Each factor can be an enabler for servitization success despite none of the factors discovered as an absolute condition. Manufacturing servitization success within the digital economy depends on the interactions between dynamic capabilities and contingency factors such as digital economy level, environmental uncertainty, firm ownership, and lifecycle stage.

Research limitations/implications

All of the construct's measurements in this research adopt secondary data, and further investigation calls for primary data (e.g. survey) for higher validity.

Originality/value

This research extends the current view of servitization by proposing an integrative conceptual framework, allowing manufacturing servitization to be examined more pertinently and comprehensively. Second, the research is an initial attempt that adopts fsQCA in servitization studies. The study sheds light on the mechanisms of attaining servitization by revealing the importance of dynamic capabilities and their interactions with the contingency factors. Third, the research extends the application scopes of dynamic capability theory, firm lifecycle theory, contingency theory, and institutional theory. Fourth, the research findings enrich the understanding of servitization in the digital economy and give business practitioners insights on leveraging dynamic capabilities in different conditions to attain successful servitization under the current circumstances.
