Abstract

Purpose

Building upon the insights of the resource-based view and internationalization theories, the purpose of this paper is to examine the role networks play in SMEs' readiness for internationalization. By investigating three different types of knowledge sharing, namely economic-setting, market-specific and customer-specific, the study analyzes their effect on SMEs' readiness for internationalization.

Design/methodology/approach

The four research hypotheses derived by from the analysis of the literature have been investigated by applying the multiple regression technique. By means of an online survey, 300 valid questionnaires were collected and information from a sample of Italian SMEs belonging to 11 agro-food consortia have been analyzed.

Findings

The results suggest that SMEs' readiness for internationalization could be supported by sharing customer-specific, market-specific and economic-setting knowledge with other firms operating within the same agro-food consortium. Additionally, data analysis highlights a negative relation between the risk perception in the process and readiness for internationalization, suggesting the importance of knowledge sharing in reducing the criticality issues of being a newcomer entering international markets.

Originality/value

From a theoretical perspective, this study aims to fill the gap in knowledge management and international relationship marketing literature. Since proposes a combination of different kinds of knowledge that contribute to reducing the criticalities SMEs must face by identifying useful information to be conveyed within the network. From a managerial perspective, the study provides useful insights for the agro-food sector, highlighting how experiential and network knowledge constitutes a pre-condition for managing internationalization complexity and discovering opportunities on foreign markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a scale for measuring the uptake of process innovations by SMEs in the food industry, from a resource-based view perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory and the existing literature, a measurement scale was proposed. The scale was then empirically validated through a survey of 315 SMEs. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were utilized for scale validation.

Findings

The findings suggest that the uptake of food process innovation can be measured from a resource-based view perspective, but not with respect to all dimensions of RBV. Particularly, the items related to value and inimitability of new food processing equipment and methods were confirmed as valid measures. Nevertheless, the findings do not confirm the validity of measurement items related to the rareness and non-substitutability of new processing methods and equipment.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of this study is the lack of consideration beyond the resource-based view perspective. In this respect, it is worth validating this measurement scale using samples beyond the SMEs and in other countries. Furthermore, the statistical analysis is limited to EFA and CFA, which may be prone to the exploratory nature and subjectivity in factor selection.

Practical implications

The main contribution of this study is the development and validation of a scale for measuring the uptake of food process innovations. Hence, firms can utilize this scale to evaluate the efficiency of food process innovations in the quest for maximizing output. Furthermore, researchers can utilize this scale for further explorations and investigations on aspects related to the uptake of food process innovations.

Originality/value

The utilization of Resource Based View (RBV) opens a rather different approach for measuring process innovation from a resource-based view perspective. While the existing literature in the food industry has measured innovation from a general approach, this study offers a different approach by paying specific attention to process innovation from a resource-based view perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of family control on the association between related party transactions (RPTs) and different forms of accrual-based earnings management (AEM) and real earnings management (REM), analyzing the effect of board characteristics on the possible association.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper studies a sample of Italian non-financial listed firms over the 2014–2019 period, by GLS regression models, controlling for the fixed effects of the company's sector of operation and the year.

Findings

Results indicate a different association between RPTs and earnings management (EM) in family and non-family firms. They point out that family firms use RPTs in association with downward AEM and REM perpetrated by abnormal discretionary expenses as well as a substitute of REM via abnormal production costs. For non-family firms, findings indicate only a substitution effect between RPTs and AEM. Furthermore, CEO duality, board gender diversity and the presence of the family on the board positively moderate the association between RPTs and, respectively, REM implemented through sales manipulations, downward AEM and upward AEM.

Originality/value

This study suggests that the socioemotional wealth (SEW) differently affects the relationship between RPTs and EM, according to the form of the latter. It also points out family firms' heterogeneity in earnings manipulations, by providing evidence of the moderating role of board characteristics on the association between RPTs and the various forms of EM.

Abstract

Purpose

Although cross-border e-commerce has become increasingly popular among small and medium-sized enterprises as a foreign market entry mode, research on the determinants of its success is scarce. Drawing on the resource-based view, this study aims to examine the relationship between a firm’s information technology, international marketing and export operations capabilities and its cross-border e-commerce strategic and financial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze data from a sample of Italian exporters in the food and beverage industry.

Findings

The results highlight the mixed effects of information technology, international marketing and export operations capabilities on both e-commerce strategic and financial performance. Moreover, the use of third-party e-commerce platforms reduces the effect of exporters’ information technology capabilities on their e-commerce financial performance.

Research limitations/implications

The majority of exporters in this study had implemented cross-border e-commerce only recently; hence, longitudinal data on the success factors of e-commerce are not available.

Practical implications

While cross-border e-commerce may work as an accelerator of the overall export performance, export managers are urged to approach it strategically with a clear medium-term view to develop the required capabilities.

Originality/value

This study was one of the first to examine the drivers of small and medium-sized exporters’ cross-border e-commerce performance. Moreover, unlike most previous analyzes, it focused on e-commerce as a foreign market entry mode rather than a supplement to offline exporting activities.
