Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a new algorithm chaotic pigeon-inspired optimization (CPIO), which can effectively improve the computing efficiency of the basic Itti’s model for saliency-based detection. The CPIO algorithm and relevant applications are aimed at air surveillance for target detection.
Design/methodology/approach
To compare the improvements of the performance on Itti’s model, three bio-inspired algorithms including particle swarm optimization (PSO), brain storm optimization (BSO) and CPIO are applied to optimize the weight coefficients of each feature map in the saliency computation.
Findings
According to the experimental results in optimized Itti’s model, CPIO outperforms PSO in terms of computing efficiency and is superior to BSO in terms of searching ability. Therefore, CPIO provides the best overall properties among the three algorithms.
Practical implications
The algorithm proposed in this paper can be extensively applied for fast, accurate and multi-target detections in aerial images.
Originality/value
CPIO algorithm is originally proposed, which is very promising in solving complicated optimization problems.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to simplify the Explicit Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (ENMPC) by linearizing the trajectory with Quantum-behaved Pigeon-Inspired Optimization (QPIO).
Design/methodology/approach
The paper deduces the nonlinear model of the quadrotor and uses the ENMPC to track the trajectory. Since the ENMPC has high demand for the state equation, the trajectory needed to be differentiated many times. When the trajectory is complicate or discontinuous, QPIO is proposed to linearize the trajectory. Then the linearized trajectory will be used in the ENMPC.
Findings
Applying the QPIO algorithm allows the unequal distance sample points to be acquired to linearize the trajectory. Comparing with the equidistant linear interpolation, the linear interpolation error will be smaller.
Practical implications
Small-sized quadrotors were adopted in this research to simplify the model. The model is supposed to be accurate and differentiable to meet the requirements of ENMPC.
Originality/value
Traditionally, the quadrotor model was usually linearized in the research. In this paper, the quadrotor model was kept nonlinear and the trajectory will be linearized instead. Unequal distance sample points were utilized to linearize the trajectory. In this way, the authors can get a smaller interpolation error. This method can also be applied to discrete systems to construct the interpolation for trajectory tracking.

Abstract
Purpose
Engineered material arresting systems (EMASs) are dedicated to stopping aircraft that overrun the runway before they enter dangerous terrain. The system consists of low-strength foamed concretes. The core component of the arresting system design is a reliable simulation model. Aircraft test verification is required before the practical application of the model. This study aims to propose a simulation model for the arresting system design and conducts serial verification tests.
Design/methodology/approach
Six verification tests were conducted using a Boeing 737 aircraft. The aircraft was equipped with an extra inertia navigation system and a strain gauge system to measure its motion and the forces exerted on the landing gears. The heights of the arrestor beds for these tests were either 240 or 310 mm, and the entering speeds of the aircraft ranged from 23.9 to 60.6 knots.
Findings
Test results revealed that both the aircraft and the pilots on board were safe after the tests. The maximum transient acceleration experienced by the dummies on board was 2.5 g, which is within the human tolerance. The model exhibited a satisfied accuracy to the field tests, as the calculation errors of the stopping distances were no greater than 7 per cent.
Originality/value
This study proposes a simulation model for the arresting system design and conducts serial verification tests. The model can be used in EMAS design.

Abstract
Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel method using support vector machine (SVM) classifiers for objective seam pucker evaluation. Features are extracted using wavelet analysis and gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and the samples are evaluated using SVM classifiers. The study aims to solve the problem of inappropriate parameters and large required samples in objective seam pucker evaluation.
Design/methodology/approach
Initially, seam pucker image was captured, and Edge detection and Hough transform were utilized to normalize the seam position and orientation. After cropping the image, the intensity was adjusted to the same identical level through histogram specification. Then, the standard deviations of the horizontal image and diagonal image, reconstructed using wavelet decomposition and reconstruction, were calculated based on parameter optimization. Meanwhile, GLCM was extracted from the restructured horizontal detail image, then the contrast and correlation of GLCM were calculated. Finally, these four features were imported to SVM classifiers based on genetic algorithm for evaluation.
Findings
The four extracted features reflected linear relationships among five grades. The experimental results showed that the classification accuracy was 96 percent, which catches up to the performance of human vision, and resolves ambiguity and subjective of the manual evaluation.
Originality/value
There are large required samples in current research. This paper provides a novel method using finite samples, and the parameters of the methods were discussed for parameter optimization. The evaluation results can provide references for analyzing the reason of wrinkles during garment manufacturing.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to reveal the distributional characteristics and evolutional patterns in source periodicals, topics, authors, funding, and institutes of research papers in Chinese Agricultural Economics so as to understand the current situations and developmental tendency of Chinese agricultural economics research over the past decade.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the citation analysis method, this paper analyzed the distributional characteristics and evolution of source periodicals, fields, authors and topics of 2,203 highly cited journal papers from the database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and 189 cited journal papers from database of Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) in agricultural economics first-authored by Chinese scholars from 2006 to 2015.
Findings
First, over the past decade, agricultural economics research in China has seen a rapid development. Specially, 103 scholars and 42 institutes have played key roles in the development, and 12 Chinese periodicals and 3 international journals have been the most influential outlets. Second, the coverage of the topics in Chinese agricultural economics research is broad and has expanded over the past decade. The rural land issue has been the most popular topic, while the issues regarding rural institutional arrangements and industrialization in rural areas have been explored extensively. However, issues in other fields, such as agricultural markets and trade, rural labor, food safety, etc. have to be further studied. Third, the improvements of economic theory and quantitative analytic techniques, the supports from research funding, and an increase in the collaboration between Chinese scholars and those from other countries have made great contribution to the rapid development of Chinese agricultural economics research over the past decade.
Originality/value
This paper is an original work that identifies the most influential journal papers including highly cited journal papers from CNKI and cited journal papers from SSCI, using citation frequency and standard Essential Science Indicators method. This is a contribution relative to the methods used by previous studies, which did not account for frequency of citation of a paper. Moreover, this study is based on data from two databases, CNKI and SSCI, suggesting that the coverage of sample papers is broader compared to those of previous studies.

Abstract
Purpose
Although researchers have long recognized the importance of participating organizations’ (POs) relational behavior for mega construction projects (MCPs) performance, relational behavior may not be executed by POs without effective leadership from project owners. However, little is known about the mechanisms linking owners’ leadership styles to POs’ relational behavior. This study draws on full range leadership theory and role theory to examine the relationships between owners’ leadership styles (i.e. transformational and transactional) and relational behavior. POs’ role orientations (i.e. normative and economic) are considered as potential mediators.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 175 managers deeply involved in MCPs. Hierarchical regression model and bootstrapping methods were performed on the data to examine the direct effects of owners’ leadership on POs’ relational behavior and the mediating effects of POs’ role orientations.
Findings
The results revealed that both owners’ transformational and transactional leadership positively affect POs’ relational behavior, despite the former being higher than the latter, and indirectly influence relational behavior via POs’ normative and economic role orientation, respectively.
Practical implications
This study provides a clear picture of how owners’ leadership can motivate POs’ relational behavior to achieve high-quality inter-organizational relationships in MCPs. The findings can guide owners’ top manager selection by prioritizing those with transformational leadership, which is beneficial to achieving high-level relational behavior of POs. The results also imply that owners should pay greater attention to cultivating POs’ normative role orientation by encouraging teamwork and open communication to enhance their implementation of relational behavior.
Originality/value
Unlike previous research focusing more on intra-organizational leader–follower relationship within one PO, this study is one of the first to empirically confirm owners’ leadership as a critical antecedent of POs’ relational behavior, thus enhancing the theoretical understanding of inter-organizational relationship management in MCPs. Based on role theory, this study considers a novel organizational psychology mechanism, i.e. POs’ role orientations, as the mediator to unravel how owners’ leadership affects POs’ relational behavior, which was rarely invoked in MCP leadership literature.
