Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to develop a normal contact stiffness (NCS) model among three disks of the assembled rotor system, which systematically considers the friction coefficient, the asperities interaction and the elastoplastic contact regime.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the revised fractal theory, considering the friction effect, the elastoplastic contact regime and the asperities interaction in a simple way, the total NCS among three disks of the rod-fastening rotor bearing system is established. Effects of fractal dimension and roughness, friction coefficient, asperities interaction and material properties on the normal stiffness are investigated by simulations and the relevant comparisons are given for examining the reasonability of the proposed model.
Findings
NCS will decrease when asperities interaction and friction are included. As the load increases, the influences of asperities interaction and friction on stiffness become serious. NCS will be enhanced when the elastoplastic regime is considered.
Originality/value
A comprehensive NCS model is developed. It provides a theoretical basis for the modeling of the NCS for multi-interfaces.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to obtain the dynamic behaviours of cracked rod-fastening rotor bearing system (RFBS), and experimental investigation was carried out to examine the dynamic characteristics of this kind of assembled rotor bearing system with a transverse crack passing through the critical speed.
Design/methodology/approach
An experimental test rig of cracked RFBS was established for examining the vibration behaviours between intact and cracked system. The crack on the surface of a fastening rod was simulated by wire-electrode cutting processing method. The comprehensive analysis method of vibration was used to obtain the dynamic characteristics such as vibration amplitude, acceleration and whirling orbits before and after the critical speed as well as the instantaneous response in the process of speed up.
Findings
Some experimental vibration datum is obtained for cracked RFBS. The appearance of a crack will introduce the initial bending and make the vibration amplitude, acceleration and instant response in the process of speed up increase greatly as well as the change of whirling orbits.
Originality/value
The actual vibration characteristics for this complex assembled rotor system with a transverse crack are given passing through the critical speed. It can provide some useful help for monitoring the vibration behaviours of this kind of assembled rotor system as well as the detection of the crack fault.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the dynamic behaviours of a three-dimensional (3D) rod-fastening rotor bearing system (RFBS) with a crack in a fastening rod.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the 3D finite element method model and stress analysis of a cracked RFBS, a 3D dynamic model of the RFBS with a crack in a fastening rod is established with considering the initial bending and stress redistribution caused by the crack. A combined numerical simulation technology is used to investigate the dynamic behaviours of the system.
Findings
The distribution of contact stress between the two disks will be not uniform, and the initial bending of the system will occur due to the presence of a crack. This will lead to the change of system stiffness and the dynamic behaviours such as vibration amplitude, and motion orbits will change significantly.
Research limitations/implications
A 3D finite element method dynamic model is proposed for the study of dynamic characteristics of complex combined rotor bearing system with cracks.
Practical implications
It is helpful and significant to master the dynamic behaviours of cracked RFBS. It is helpful to detect the presence of a crack of the rotor bearing system.
Social implications
Some of the losses caused by crack failure may be reduced.
Originality/value
The proposed 3D method can provide a useful reference for the study of dynamic characteristics of complex combined rotor bearing system with cracks.

Abstract
Purpose
The anisotropic surfaces of viscoelastic materials play a role in sliding friction; the purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the anisotropic surfaces on contact area and the friction coefficient.
Design/methodology/approach
A complex elastic modulus and an anisotropic power spectrum are used to compute the coefficient of friction based on the extension Persson theory which considers the partial contact and the variation in the roughness slopes.
Findings
The ratios of the relative contact area that varies with velocity are obtained with different angles and eccentricities, and the effect of the elastic modulus needs to be considered. The coefficients of the friction parallel to the direction of motion decrease as the angle increases, or as the eccentricity decreases. The friction coefficients in the vertical direction change irregularly when the angles or eccentricities increase.
Originality/value
An extension of Persson’s work considering the partial contact and the effective mean square slope of the roughness is applied to study sliding friction, and the effect of the elastic modulus on contact area is considered.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the role of multidimensional social capital and consumer subjective well-being in online brand communities (OBCs). The aim was to provide practical guidance to global brand marketers for cultivating and strengthening OBC operations, optimizing consumer-brand-community relationships and creating value in the digital age.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 576 valid questionnaires were collected through an online survey, and the model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling.
Findings
In OBCs, the cognitive dimension of social capital (i.e. shared language and shared vision) strongly affects the relational dimension of social capital (i.e. social trust and reciprocity). Both these dimensions also positively influence consumer community subjective well-being, which, in turn, enhances consumer brand subjective well-being. Thus, community subjective well-being has a mediating role in the aforementioned relationship, and brand community is an antecedent to brand subjective well-being.
Research limitations/implications
Future studies should investigate other dimensions of social capital and well-being, as well as moderator variables, social environments and types of culture.
Originality/value
This study constructed a conceptual framework that focused on the effect of multidimensional social capital in OBCs to elucidate antecedents of brand subjective well-being from the perspectives of social networks and relationships. Moreover, it examined how brands strategically expand their clientele base with regard to target customers.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper reviews the pros and cons of different parametric modeling methods, which can provide a theoretical reference for parametric reconstruction of 3D human body models for virtual fitting.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, we briefly analyze the mainstream datasets of models of the human body used in the area to provide a foundation for parametric methods of such reconstruction. We then analyze and compare parametric methods of reconstruction based on their use of the following forms of input data: point cloud data, image contours, sizes of features and points representing the joints. Finally, we summarize the advantages and problems of each method as well as the current challenges to the use of parametric modeling in virtual fitting and the opportunities provided by it.
Findings
Considering the aspects of integrity and accurate of representations of the shape and posture of the body, and the efficiency of the calculation of the requisite parameters, the reconstruction method of human body by integrating orthogonal image contour morphological features, multifeature size constraints and joint point positioning can better represent human body shape, posture and personalized feature size and has higher research value.
Originality/value
This article obtains a research thinking for reconstructing a 3D model for virtual fitting that is based on three kinds of data, which is helpful for establishing personalized and high-precision human body models.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on the survey data of 1,152 households in three provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia on the Loess Plateau, this paper aims to empirically analyze the impact of aging and off-farm employment on farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. This paper analyzes the moderating effect of social network and the mediating effect of technological cognition in this impact relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the above analysis, the second part of this paper is based on relevant theories and constructs a theoretical model of the relationship of aging, off-farm employment, social network, technology cognition and farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. The third part introduces research methods, variable selection and descriptive statistics analysis of variables. The fourth part, based on the data of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces in the Loess Plateau in 2016, empirically analyzes the impact of aging, off-farm employment and social network on the farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. This paper further examines the moderating effect of social network and the mediating effect of technology cognition in this influence relationship. Finally, based on the findings of the empirical study, this paper puts forward countermeasures and suggestions.
Findings
First, aging and off-farm employment have a significant negative impact on farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology, while social network has a significant positive effect. Second, social network has alleviated the effect of aging and off-farm employment on restraining farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. Third, aging and off-farm employment have restrained farmers’ cognition of soil and water conservation technology. Social network has promoted farmers’ cognition of soil and water conservation technology. Social network plays a moderating role in the impact of aging and off-farm employment on farmers’ cognition of soil and water conservation technology. Technology cognition plays a mediating role in the impact of social network on farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology.
Originality/value
This paper integrates the aging, off-farm employment and social network into the same analytical framework and reveals their impact on farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology and its action mechanism, which enriches the impact of human capital and social network on farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. Then taking the social network as a moderator variable, the paper verifies its moderating effect on the relationship of aging, off-farm employment and farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology. Farmers’ technology cognition should be included in the analysis framework to examine the impact of aging, off-farm employment and social network on farmers’ cognition of soil and water conservation technology. Taking the technology cognition as a mediator variable, the paper verifies its mediating effect on the relationship of aging, off-farm employment and farmers’ adoption behavior of soil and water conservation technology.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine Chinese firms’ long-term value creation derived from cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMAs).
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected a sample of 140 CBMAs conducted by Chinese firms listed in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock markets between 1997 and 2010. Long-horizon event study methodology was used to test hypotheses.
Findings
The authors find Chinese firms gain long-term value from CBMAs. In particular, the authors find that Chinese firms tend to gain more value from targets from developed countries, and Chinese state-owned firms are more capable of gaining value from CBMAs than Chinese private firms.
Originality/value
Given Chinese firms are increasingly acquiring targets outside of China in recent years, it is still unclear about whether Chinese firms gain value from these very expensive cross-border deals. This is one of the first studies that address the question: What are the long-term performance outcomes of Chinese CBMAs in recent years?

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to predict the effect of bra pad specifications on breast deformation during jumping using a finite element (FE) method. Breast deformation is a key concern for women during exercise and can be effectively controlled with sports bras. In most studies, the deformation of breasts when wearing a sports bra is measured using motion capture devices to judge their effectiveness. However, the operation of such devices is highly complex and time-consuming. Computer-aided technology is an efficient way to simulate these experiments.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, the breast model was obtained using three-dimensional (3D) scanning. Assembling models were obtained for FE analysis using reverse engineering and computer-aided design (CAD) software. The breast deformation results were obtained by completing pre-processing, solving and post-processing in the FE simulation software. To extend the application of these models, pads of different sizes and thicknesses within the bra were constructed to simulate the effect of pads on breast deformation.
Findings
The calculated root mean square errors were <1%, which indicated good agreement between the FE and experimental data in all the models. Nipple deformation was always the largest in most models. The smallest deformation occurred at the superior position of breasts in all models. In addition, larger pads were not effective in reducing breast deformation; however, thicker pads were.
Originality/value
The method developed in this study provides an effective way to predict breast deformation in multiple positions and is convenient for designing compression bras.

Abstract
Purpose
Under the new media environment, while enjoying the convenience brought by the propagation of public opinion information (referred to as public opinion), learning the evolution process of public opinion and strengthening the governance of the spreading of public opinion are of great significance to promoting economic development and maintaining social stability as well as effectively resisting the negative impact of its propagation.
Design/methodology/approach
Thinking about the results of empirical research and bibliometric analysis, this paper focused on introducing key factors such as information content, social strengthening effects, etc., from both internal and external levels, dynamically designed public opinion spreading rules and netizens' state transition probability. Subsequently, simulation experiments were conducted to discuss the spreading law of public opinion in two types of online social networks and to identify the key factors which influencing its evolution process. Based on the experimental results, the governance strategies for the propagation of negative public opinion were proposed finally.
Findings
The results show that compared with other factors, the propagation of public opinion depends more on the attributes of the information content itself. For the propagation of negative public opinion, on the one hand, the regulators should adopt flexible guidance strategy to establish a public opinion supervision mechanism and autonomous system with universal participation. On the other hand, they still need to adopt rigid governance strategy, focusing on the governance timing and netizens with higher network status to forestall the wide-diffusion of public opinion.
Practical implications
The research conclusions put forward the enlightenment for the governance of public opinion in management practice, and also provided decision-making reference for the regulators to reasonably respond to the propagation of public opinion.
Originality/value
Our research proposed a research framework for the discussion of public opinion propagation process and had important practical guiding significance for the governance of public opinion propagation.
