Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider the use and application of the “wire‐beam electrode” method to evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors used in concrete.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion behavior of reinforcing bars in concrete was studied by simulating the 4×4 wire‐beam electrode array. Different inhibitors, such as NaNO2, NaNO2 + Na2CO3 and NaNO2 + aniline, were added to reinforced concrete. By measuring the open‐circuit potential of an iron wire, the impact of different inhibitors on the corrosion of rebar in the concretes was studied after immersion in 3 percent NaCl solution.

Findings

Best protection was achieved by adding NaNO2 and aniline as inhibitors jointly to the concrete, as this combination maintained the open‐circuit potential within the passivation range at all times, so ensuring the integrity of the passive membrane.

Originality/value

By addition of this combination of the inhibitors, the compactibility of the cement concrete structure can be increased, thereby protecting the reinforcing bar against the external corrosive media. It is a technical approach that can deliver long‐term protection of the steel, with the best practical and economic advantage.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider the use and application of the “grey system” modelling methodology for the prediction and characterisation of inert anodes used in the aluminium electrolysis industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Cermet was very interesting potential material for developing inert anodes, which was composed of ceramic phase (NiFe2O4) and metal/alloy phase (nickel‐iron‐copper).

Findings

Differential thermal analysis showed that newly fabricated cermet had good performance. The calcination temperature was very important for evaluating material properties, so was obtained in order to build the forecast grey model.

Originality/value

Through calculation the GM(1,1) model was proved to be accurate in predicting technical parameters, and able to pinpoint precisely the properties of cermet materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate corrosion resistance of superheater T91 material based on high temperature corrosion experiments with a condensate environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The contributions of water temperature, chloride concentration and corrosion time were considered and analyzed for modeling corrosion kinetics. The corrosion tendency also was predicted, and the results were compared with higher temperature exposures of T91 tube material installed in a biomass power plant.

Findings

High temperature exposure tests showed that the corrosion rates of T91 material would increase with temperature; there was a very evident corrosion acceleration point in 110°C. It was concluded that dimensional homogeneity analysis can serve as a viable evaluation method for T91 superheater material.

Originality/value

Dimensional homogeneity analysis was used as evaluation method for anti-corrosion performance of T91 superheater material.

Abstract

The spinel NiFe2O4 has been identified as being a potentially successful anti‐corrosion ceramic that can be used in aluminium electrolysis under molten salt corrosive conditions (970°C). The evaluation and fabrication processing of NiFe2O4 has been studied in this paper. According to the analysis and comparison of material properties, it has been concluded that fabrication technology for making anti‐corrosion electrode material would not be exceptionally difficult and therefore that the material has a strong potential for use in this service.

Abstract

This paper considers the use and application of the “grey system” modelling methodology for the prediction and characterisation of boiler water R‐values in electric power generating plants. It has been confirmed that the GM (1,1) model can pinpoint precisely the properties of the water chemistry cycle. It is considered that the grey system methodology can strengthen significantly the effectiveness of system diagnosis, thereby enabling the development and application of automated water chemistry management systems in power plants.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of advertisements with different female role portrayals in a second-tier city with “first-class opportunities.” Chinese girls and women represent a huge market for personal as well as household goods.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental study was conducted using a convenience sample of 216 male and female participants aged 17-21 years in Changchun, China. Participants were asked to respond to print advertisements using traditional and modern female images including housewife, cute female, female with classical beauty, sporty, career-minded and neutral (tomboy).

Findings

Results revealed that female participants responded more favorably toward advertisements using female images than male participants. There was no difference in the responses to the six different female images among both male and female participants.

Research limitations/implications

Young consumers in China are not sensitive to the different female images used in the print advertisements. Advertisers can, therefore, enjoy flexibility in the selection of female gender roles for advertisements.

Originality/value

Little is known about how marketers and advertisements can best communicate with young consumers in China using advertisements with different female images. This study fills this literature gap.

Abstract

Purpose

“Fostered idols” refer to entertainment idols and young stars-in-the-making who begin their careers as amateurs. Today, the fostered idol model has become increasingly popular in China, and fans demonstrate incredible consumption power. Despite the booming market, little is known about this phenomenon. Therefore, this study aims to explore fans’ motivations and consumption practices from the consumer’s perspective within the framework of self-determination theory.

Design/methodology/approach

In all 20 in-depth interviews with fostered idol fans were conducted through online phone calls. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and subsequently analysed using a grounded approach.

Findings

The results indicate that fans’ consumption practices are motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. Intrinsic motivation includes sensory pleasure while extrinsic motivations are composed of a sense of being needed and a sense of success. Extrinsic motivations play a dominant role and reflect the needs of relatedness and competence. Additionally, consumption practices are found to be consistent with motivations.

Research limitations/implications

The results show the crucial role of psychological satisfaction experienced by fans in the consumption of the fostered idol and highlight the importance of a relatedness- and competence-supportive environment to secure fans’ persistent consumption and loyalty.

Originality/value

This study focuses on fans of fostered idols that has not been explored in existing studies and offers valuable insights regarding the similarities and differences between fan consumption in China and other Asian countries. The results will inform marketing practitioners for the development of effective strategies and business decisions.
