Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a cost-effective foundation technique for the design of foundations of transmission towers, heavily loaded structures, etc.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental model tests are conducted in a model test tank to find out the effect of length and diameter of geogrid encased granular pile anchors, the relative density of sand and the angle of inclination of the pile from the vertical on uplift behavior of granular pile anchors.

Findings

The uplift capacity of the geogrid encased granular pile anchor increased with increasing length and diameter of granular pile anchor. Further, increasing the relative density of surrounding soil increased uplift capacity of geogrid encased granular pile anchor system. Moreover, increasing the angle of inclination of loading also increased uplift capacity of whole system. Thus, the proposed system can be effectively used in field for further applications.

Originality/value

The paper is helpful for the engineers looking for cost-effective foundation techniques for heavily loaded structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The fundamental period of the structure plays an important role in the seismic analysis. This study aims to analyze the modal response of dam, the two-dimensional (2D) FEM model is developed by using ANSYS 2022 R1 software.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the optimized mesh size to achieve grid independence, the variable element size has been considered, and its optimal value is calculated using the technique of response surface optimization. Further, the effect of damping ratios of 5%, 8% and 10% is also considered for the free vibration analysis of the dam structure.

Findings

The results show that the natural frequencies of the dam decrease with a reduction in stiffness of the whole structure. Further, the effect of pre-stress conditions is analyzed and the study has proved that the natural frequency increases after considering the pre-stress as initial condition during modal analysis. Further, it is found that the damping has a substantial effect on frequency for higher modes of vibrations.

Research limitations/implications

The study only focused on modal analysis of the gravity dam, and this study’s results can be used further to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the dam including hydrodynamic conditions.

Originality/value

The finite element tool is used to evaluate the modal response of gravity dam incorporating pre-stress and damping ratio along with soil–structure interaction. Moreover, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no earlier study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of damping and pre-stress conditions on the stability and natural frequency of the system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the rush of technological change will consolidate the worldwide reach of the internet with more capacity, specifically to control the physical world, including the machines, industrial facilities and frameworks that characterize cutting-edge technology.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 203 respondents predominantly from emerging economies, specifically India and SEA. Most of the participants are working professionals. Structural equation modelling was used to analyze data, as it is a popular statistical technique because of its ability to model selected independent variables and take into account all possible forms of measurement error to test an entire theory.

Findings

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) platform comprises four fundamental capabilities: connectivity, big data, advanced analytics and application development. The IIOT has the potential to provide a high level of synergies between the 4 Ms of manufacturing, namely, man, machine, material and method.

Research limitations/implications

The collected data are predominately from India and SEA (close to 75 per cent), while contributions from other regions are comparatively less, so the findings cannot be generalized to the global context.

Practical implications

It is in the interest of service providers to collaborate and provide a universal solution to retain legacy systems to minimize the investment and reduce the security threat, which could boost IIOT adoption while ensuring that manufacturers are able to leverage this new technology efficiently.

Originality/value

The framework obtained has good quality of validity and reliability indicators. Thus, an alternative framework has been added to customer expectation which is currently a popular topic in the technological changes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of fairness concerns of the retailer on the pricing policies of the supply chain partners, their individual profits, and the overall performance of a dual-channel supply chain composed of one manufacturer and one retailer. First, the authors model the dual-channel supply chain under retailer’s fairness concern. Second, the authors derive the optimal pricing policies of the channel members. Third, the authors analyze the effects of retailer’s fairness and bargaining power on the pricing strategies and profit functions of the dual-channel supply chain system.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopt the manufacturer-led Stackelberg game theoretic framework, where the dominant manufacturer’s pricing decisions are based on the retailer’s pricing decision. The paper considers Nash bargaining solution as the fairness reference point to formulate the utility function of the fair-retailer. The paper uses this approach because it endogenously accounts for the competitive power and cooperative contribution of the channel members when they interact.

Findings

The authors find that the retailer’s fairness concerns are not always beneficial for its better performance. If the retailer is moderately sensitive towards its fairness, it will positively influence its performance. However, if the fairness concern becomes too high then it will negatively impact the retailer’s performance because it results in customers’ migration towards direct online channel for buying the products. In addition, if the retailer’s fairness concerns are mild, the manufacturer’s prices will decrease in retailer’s bargaining power, which is opposite otherwise.

Originality/value

The authors use Nash bargaining solution model as the fairness reference in the context of dual-channel supply chain, which is comparatively a recent approach and has been used independently from dual-channel supply chain system.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the decision-making powers of Australian female consumers in the financial product market. More precisely, it examines how the integrative effects of rationality, emotions and personality traits influence the decision-making powers of Australian female consumers when making financial product purchase decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a quantitative research approach, utilising a survey strategy. The proposed conceptual model was tested using structural equation modelling (AMOS) on a valid 357 responses from Australian female consumers.

Findings

The findings revealed that rationality, self-efficacy and impulsivity have a positive impact on the decision-making powers of Australian female consumers. Besides this, self-efficacy and anxiety had significant moderating effects on the decision-making power of Australian female consumers when buying financial products, whereas anger and impulsivity were found to have no moderating effects.

Research limitations/implications

The study offers understanding on the role of emotions and personality traits in financial decision-making, which can help financial institutions design sound products and services that can also ensure consumers' overall well-being.

Originality/value

Informed by the theoretical notions of the appraisal-tendency framework (ATF) and emotion-imbued choice model (EIC), the study makes a unique contribution by investigating the impact of rationality, emotions and personality traits on the decision-making powers of female consumers in the Australian financial product market.

Abstract

Purpose

Modularization and level of repair analysis for fleet system influences every phase of the system life cycle. Modular based fleet system design raises new issues since the maintenance/repair services introduces further requirements than traditional product engineering. The decision of modular system and level of repair plays an important role to reduce the Life Cycle Costs (LCC) of fleet maintenance system. The concept of modularity has been extended to services in maintenance for the varieties of fleet systems such as wind turbines, gas turbines, advance machine tools and aircrafts etc. System modularity allows the designers to use of different design alternatives and ease of fault diagnosis, repair and services. The purpose of this paper to develop a joint optimization approach for optimal selection of modular design and level of repair decisions. Usually these two decisions are taken separately.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed joint approach, level of repair analysis is used to obtain the optimal modular design decisions with reduced life cycle cost. In the existing research, the effect of system modularity on the level of repair decisions is investigated. The simulation-based approach is used to solve this joint problem. Which is rarely seen in the existing literature. A genetic algorithm-based simulation is used to investigate the joint problem. The proposed approach also evaluates all the possible configurations of modular design to justify the integrated effect of modularity and maintenance decisions, that is Level of Repair (LOR).

Findings

This paper highlights interactive effect of system modularity and level of repair decisions for the system operated in multi-echelon maintenance network. A comparative study is provided on effect of system modularity and level of repair decisions considering the time dependent failure rate and constant failure rate of the system components. A simulation based joint approach is used to solve this problem. The results obtained from the investigation are shown that modularity plays an important role to allocate modularity and level of repair decisions for the fleet system. The novelty of this research work is to identify the role of modularization to optimizing the level of repair decisions. The models, that is time-dependent failure rate and constant failure rate presented in this study provides more practical approach to deal the modularity and level of repair analysis.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed joint approach illustrates using a numerical case of a mechanical system operated at fleet level. More modular structure in terms of number of modules in the machine may be presented for an industrial case. Additionally, the joint approach can also be extended for the any other consumer product and system. But, the prime motive of the paper is to highlights the importance of the modular design while selecting the level of repair decisions.

Originality/value

This is the first work which consider the joint optimization of modular design and level of repair analysis to the best of authors knowledge. Present paper is a more practical approach for identifying the modular design and level of repair decisions for the system operated at fleet level.

Abstract

Purpose

Titanium (Ti) alloys are in high demand in manufacturing industries all over the world. The property like high strength to weight ratio makes Ti alloys highly recommended for aerospace industries. Ti alloys possess good weldability, and therefore, they were extensively investigated with regard to strength and metallurgical properties of welded joint. This study aims to deal with the analysis of strength and microstructural changes in Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) alloy after tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding.

Design/methodology/approach

Two pair of Ti alloy plates were welded in two different voltages, i.e. 24 and 28 V, with keeping the current constant, i.e. 80 A It was a random selection of current and voltage values to check the performance of welded material. Both the welded plates were undergone through some mechanical property analysis like impact test, tensile test and hardness test. In addition, the microstructure of the welded joints was also analyzed.

Findings

It was found that hardness and tensile properties gets improved with an increment in voltage, but this effect was reverse for impact toughness. A good corroboration between microstructure and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, hardness and toughness, was reported in this work. Heat distribution in both the welded plates was simulated through ANSYS software to check the temperature contour in the plates.

Originality/value

A good corroboration between microstructure and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, hardness and toughness, was reported in this study.

Abstract

Purpose

This research explores the finite element modeling of the crater and material removal rate (MRR) in micro-electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM) with and without vibration of the workpiece. The application of workpiece vibration in the micro-EDM process improved flushing efficiency and enhanced material removal rate (MRR).

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element method (FEM) has been developed to predict the shape of the crater with and without vibration. The temperature distribution on the workpiece surface with and without vibration has been obtained in the form of the contour plot.

Findings

The MRR obtained from the numerical model revealed that there was an enhancement in MRR in micro-EDM with vibration as compared to without vibration. The effect of process parameters on MRR in micro-EDM with and without is also presented in this work.

Originality/value

In this work, the two-dimensional axisymmetric FEM model has been developed to predict the shape of the crater with and without vibration.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to carry out numerical study on growth of a single bubble from a curved hydrophilic surface, in nucleate pool boiling (NPB). The boiling performance associated with NPB on a curved surface has been analyzed in contrast to a plane surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Commercial software ANSYS Fluent 2021 R1 has been used with its built-in feature of interface tracking based on volume of fluid method. For water as the working fluid, the effect of microlayer evaporation underneath the bubble base has been included with the help of user-defined function. The phase change behavior at the interface of vapor bubble has been modeled by using “saturated-interface-volume” phase change model.

Findings

An interesting outcome of the present study is that the bubble departure gets delayed with increase in curvature of the heating surface. Wall heat flux is found to be higher for a curved surface as compared to a plane surface. Effect of wettability on the time for bubble growth is relatively more for the curved surface as compared to that for a plane surface.

Originality/value

Effect of surface curvature has been investigated on bubble dynamics and also on temporal variation of heat flux. In addition, the impact of surface wettability along with the surface curvature has also been analyzed on bubble morphology and spatial variation of heat flux. Furthermore, the influence of wall superheat on the bubble growth and also the wall heat flux has been studied for fixed angle of contact and varying curvature.
