Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the vertical integration state-of-the-art and propose an expansion of the operations and supply chain management (OSCM) field by identifying gaps and bottlenecks.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses a systematic literature review based on a sample of 173 OSCM field articles, collected from Scopus and Web of Science databases.
Findings
There are no single factors, such as future costs, structures or skills development, in the decision to vertically integrate operations. It is necessary to combine the vision of production costs with the perspective of governance and transaction costs. In addition, it is essential to consider the competency perspective and its impact on capability building.
Research limitations/implications
Few studies have attempted to understand how vertical integration is used in terms of OSCM research themes and theories. Vertical integration can help companies face challenges and serve as a potential solution for achieving better prices, demand control and quality management.
Practical implications
The significant role of vertical integration mechanisms in supply chains is crucial for managers evaluating a firm's reconfiguration with more vertical operations. Policymakers interested in supporting the smoothness of vertical integration decisions in regulatory agencies play a key role as contingencies.
Social implications
In times of global challenges, vertical integration is a strategy known to be more effective for firms to obtain a competitive advantage, making them more resilient.
Originality/value
This paper addresses gaps in the vertical integration theme and provides insights for future research development.

Abstract
Purpose
This research investigates the effect of audit report lag on the cost of equity capital. We argue that an extended audit report lag reduces the value of information and raises concerns for investors, resulting in an increased cost of equity capital.
Design/methodology/approach
We hypothesize that audit report lag increases the firm cost of equity capital. We conduct ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analyses to examine our hypothesis. Finally, we also perform a range of sensitivity tests to examine the hypothesis and robustness of findings.
Findings
Using a sample of the listed US firms from 2003 to 2018, we find that firms with higher audit report lag have a higher cost of equity capital. Our findings are economically significant as one standard deviation increase in audit report lag raises 3.82 basis points of cost of equity capital. Furthermore, our results remain robust to endogeneity concerns and alternative proxies for the cost of equity capital measures. Finally, we confirm that audit report lag increases the firm cost of equity capital through increasing information asymmetry and future financial restatement as a mediating channel.
Originality/value
We contribute to the theoretical discussion about the role of audit report lag and investors' perceptions. Overall, our results suggest that audit report lag affects a firm cost of equity capital.

Abstract
Purpose
Enterprise systems are commonly implemented by firms through outsourcing arrangements with software vendors. However, deriving benefits from these implementations has proved to be a challenge, and a great deal of variation has been observed in the extent of value generated for client and vendor firms. This research examines the role of co-specialization as a strategy to make the most out of outsourced enterprise systems. The authors develop hypotheses relating resource co-specialization with two indicators of success for implementation of enterprise software: (1) exchange success and (2) firm growth.
Design/methodology/approach
The hypotheses are tested using a unique panel data set of 175 firms adopting Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) software, a type of enterprise system used for managing manufacturing and logistics. The authors identify organizational factors that support co-specialization and then examine how co-specialization is associated with enterprise software implementation success, controlling for the endogenous choice to co-specialize.
Findings
The empirical results suggest that resource co-specialization is positively associated with implementation success and that the two resource co-specialization pathways that are examined complement each other in providing performance benefits.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the research literature on outsourcing. The study also provides a new empirical test using a unique data set of 175 firms adopting APS Software.
