Abstract

Purpose

The complex behavior of viscoelastic fluids and its flow analysis under the impact of transverse magnetic field are becoming increasingly important in numerous emerging applications including biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering, geophysics and industrial applications. Additionally, the thermal analysis and fluid flow driven by propagating membranes will aid significant applications for microscale transport in bio-thermal systems. This study aims to investigate the thermal effects of viscoelastic fluids driven by membrane-induced propagation and transverse magnetic field.

Design/methodology/approach

The propagation of the membranes will work as pump which pushes the fluids from bottom to top against the gravitation force; however, there is backflow due to compression and expansion phases of membrane propagation. The Jeffrey fluid model is employed to analyze the viscoelastic fluid flow, with entropy generation examined and equations solved analytically under low Reynolds number and long-wavelength assumptions.

Findings

The findings reveal that an increase in magnetic field strength impedes fluid flow, while higher values of the Grashof number, heat source parameter and Jeffrey fluid parameter enhance fluid motion. The study’s findings have significant implications for optimizing magnetohydrodynamic systems in various emerging applications, including biomedical engineering, aerospace, geophysics and industrial processes.

Originality/value

This study aims to investigate the impact of a transverse magnetic field on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of viscoelastic fluids driven by membrane propagation.

Abstract

Purpose

Knowing the students' readiness for the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is essential to producing competent, knowledgeable and skilled graduates who can contribute to the skilled workforce in the country. This will assist the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to ensure that their graduates own skill sets needed to work in the 4IR era. However, studies on students' readiness and preparedness for the 4IR in developing countries such as the Sultanate of Oman are still lacking. Therefore, this study investigates students' readiness level and preparedness for the 4IR. The findings of this study will benefit the HEIs policymakers, administration, faculties, departments, industries and society at large since they will be informed of the student's readiness and preparedness toward industry 4.0.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopted the measures from the same context as previous studies in this study. The questionnaire was divided into three sections; the first part described the purpose and introduction of the search with the surety to keep the data confidential. The second part consisted of demographical information like gender, education. The last parts consisted of four subsections, question items in these parts are based on the related previous study. Characteristics consisted of 14 items, knowledge consisted of 18 items related to 4IR technologies, Organizational Dimension comprised of four items related to academic programs, curriculum and training. Preparedness contained two items. The participants have rated all the items in 5-Likert scale.

Findings

Results from structural equation modeling showed that students' characteristics, knowledge of 4IR technologies and organizational dimensions significantly impact their preparedness for the 4IR. The study also found that organizational dimensions have the highest impact on students' preparedness. Furthermore, the organizational dimension significantly influences students' knowledge of 4IR technology. Moreover, students' characteristics related to 4IR are significantly affected by their knowledge of 4IR technology and organizational dimension. The findings suggest that HEIs are responsible for increasing the adoption of 4IR, and therefore organizational dimensions such as the academic programs, training, technological infrastructure and others are all critical for preparing students for a better future and should be given a priority.

Research limitations/implications

This study has used academic programs and training to measure the organizational dimension. However, other important factors should be considered, such as technological infrastructure and leadership and governance of HEIs. Second, the current research depends on quantitative data, so future research should implement a mixed methodology (questionnaires, depth interviews, document analysis and focus group) to understand the factors affecting students' readiness for 4IR clearly. Finally, although the 4IR has numerous benefits, it also has challenges in its implementation, so future studies should focus on challenges encountered by different stakeholders in implementing 4IR-related technologies.

Practical implications

The curriculum must include mandatory courses related to IT infrastructure design, user experience programming, electronic measurement and control principles, and programming for data science. HEIs should also foster interdisciplinary knowledge by integrating IT, Engineering, Business and Sciences. Furthermore, the HEIs should develop their infrastructure to have smart campuses, labs, classrooms and libraries to make HEIs a space where knowledge can be generated and innovative solutions can be proposed. This entails HEIs offering necessary hardware, software and technical support because if the HEIs improve their technological resources, students will be capable of using 4IR-related technologies effectively.

Originality/value

The advancement of technology has resulted in the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics, cloud computing, data science, virtual reality and 3D printing. It is essential to investigate students' readiness for 4IR. However, there is no study as per researchers' knowledge talked about students readiness in HEIs in the Arab world. This study could be a basis for more research on students' perception of the 4IR covering students from various backgrounds and levels.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the authors propose a novel digital twinning approach specifically designed for controlling transient thermal systems. The purpose of this study is to harness the combined power of deep learning (DL) and physics-based methods (PBM) to create an active virtual replica of the physical system.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this goal, we introduce a deep neural network (DNN) as the digital twin and a Finite Element (FE) model as the physical system. This integrated approach is used to address the challenges of controlling an unsteady heat transfer problem with an integrated feedback loop.

Findings

The results of our study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed digital twinning approach in regulating the maximum temperature within the system under varying and unsteady heat flux conditions. The DNN, trained on stationary data, plays a crucial role in determining the heat transfer coefficients necessary to maintain temperatures below a defined threshold value, such as the material’s melting point. The system is successfully controlled in 1D, 2D and 3D case studies. However, careful evaluations should be conducted if such a training approach, based on steady-state data, is applied to completely different transient heat transfer problems.

Originality/value

The present work represents one of the first examples of a comprehensive digital twinning approach to transient thermal systems, driven by data. One of the noteworthy features of this approach is its robustness. Adopting a training based on dimensionless data, the approach can seamlessly accommodate changes in thermal capacity and thermal conductivity without the need for retraining.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify, synthesise and critically examine the extant academic research on the relation between big data analytics (BDA), corporate accountability and non-financial disclosure (NFD) across several disciplines.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a structured literature review methodology and applies “insight-critique-transformative redefinition” framework to interpret the findings, develop critique and formulate future research directions.

Findings

This paper identifies and critically examines 12 research themes across four macro categories. The insights presented in this paper indicate that the nature of the relationship between BDA and accountability depends on whether an organisation considers BDA as a value creation instrument or as a revenue generation source. This paper discusses how NFD can effectively increase corporate accountability for ethical, social and environmental consequences of BDA.

Practical implications

This paper presents the results of a structured literature review exploring the state-of-the-art of academic research on the relation between BDA, NFD and corporate accountability. This paper uses a systematic approach, to provide an exhaustive analysis of the phenomenon with rigorous and reproducible research criteria. This paper also presents a series of actionable insights of how corporate accountability for the use of big data and algorithmic decision-making can be enhanced.

Social implications

This paper discusses how NFD can reduce negative social and environmental impact stemming from the corporate use of BDA.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first one to provide a comprehensive synthesis of academic literature, identify research gaps and outline a prospective research agenda on the implications of big data technologies for NFD and corporate accountability along social, environmental and ethical dimensions.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to determine the effect of marketing literacy on the success of entrepreneurial projects (EPS) in Palestine.

Design/methodology/approach

To attain the study’s purpose, the researchers employed the questionnaire, which was applied to a random sample of 298 individuals from the owners of entrepreneurial projects in Palestine. The data were analyzed and tested using SmartPls 4 software.

Findings

The study reached a set of results, including that the level of marketing literacy among owners of small businesses in the Gaza Strip was significantly higher for customer service (CS), management style (MS), technology (T) and customer retention (CR). In particular, the results implied that CS, MS, T and CR significantly and positively affect EPS.

Practical implications

This research would help the start-ups in Palestine spread marketing literacy among the workers in entrepreneurial projects.

Originality/value

Today, most countries tend to support entrepreneurs and owners of creative ideas and entrepreneurial projects through various programs. To the best of the authors'' knowledge, this research is distinguished by its modernity and scarcity in the Arab world, particularly in Palestine. Thus, it would help raise awareness of marketing literacy among owners of entrepreneurial projects and provide empirical evidence of success for those who are about to establish an entrepreneurial project.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper intends to show the role of fear of COVID-19 and the relevance of customer empowerment (CU_EMP) and customers’ perceived value of digital service transactions (CU_PV_DST) in promoting green bank service purchase intention (GBS_PI), despite the antagonistic impacts brought in other sectors and the relevance of customer empowerment (CU_EMP) and customers’ perceived value of digital service transactions (CU_PV_DST) as important mediating variables of the relation.

Design/methodology/approach

The structured questionnaire helped collect survey data from 323 small business people. The model relationship was assessed through EFA, CFA by SPSS-AMOS and SEM using bootstrapping procedures in Smart-PLS.

Findings

The findings of this study show that there is a significant effect of fear of COVID-19 pandemic (F_COVID-19P) on CU_EMP and GBS_PI. CU_EMP influences GBS_PI, whereas F_COVID-19P influences GBS_PI indirectly via CU_EMP. Furthermore, there is a substantial effect of F_COVID-19P on CU_PV_DST and GBS_PI. Thus, F_COVID-19P significantly influences GBS_PI indirectly via CU_PV_DST.

Practical implications

Capitalizing on the COVID-19 wave by empowering customers technologically, improving the legal framework and increasing the perceived value of green service by using an innovative mechanism. In addition, fostering cultural change and emphasizing altruistic values through green advertisements have been explored in this study.

Social implications

Green services are healthier for smart/green economy and are health-protective for coping with health risks.

Originality/value

This study helps in understanding the theories used in this context by linking them to F_COVID-19P with CU_EMP, CU_PV_DST and GBS_PI and contributes to the literature of both. Furthermore, this is the only study that has used SEM to study this kind of interrelation.

Abstract

Purpose

The study examines the role of regulation in the fintech-based financial inclusion (FBFI)–risk-taking nexus in the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) region.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 10 countries in SSA over the period 2014 to 2021, the study employed the fixed-effect regression model and the two-step generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator.

Findings

The results show that FBFI mitigates commercial banks risk-taking in SSA. But as FBFI progresses, the association takes the shape of an inverted U, increasing risks initially and decreasing them later on. Effective supervision and regulatory quality, in particular, are essential in moderating this relationship by offsetting the adverse consequences of FBFI in its early stages.

Research limitations/implications

First, while our sample is limited to banks in ten SSA countries, future studies could extend the sample size, enabling more explicit generalization of the results. Second, the FBFI–bank risk nexus can be explored further by comparing diverse forms of fintech participation, such as fintech company investment, fintech technology investment, cooperation with specific fintech service providers and cooperation with Internet giants.

Practical implications

Policymakers, banks and fintech companies should collaborate to certify the sustainable utilization of fintech tools to ensure financial inclusion. Policymakers should craft policies that encourage effective supervision and regulatory quality of fintechs since they reduce banks' risk-taking practices, which usually have positive effect on the economy.

Originality/value

The study adds value to the debate on the role of regulation on the FBFI–risk-taking nexus, taking into account countries that are at different levels of development.

Abstract

Purpose

Environmental threats are becoming severe in developing and undeveloped countries. It urges to know how green banking operations can foster sustainable development in these regions. This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the determinants of green banking operations in Bangladesh.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the socially responsible investing (SRI) theory, this study examined the hypothesized relationships using a partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The Bayesian SEM (BSEM) through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach was also used to validate the study's first-order model.

Findings

The findings show that sustainable innovativeness, green investment and green banking policy substantially and positively change green banking operations. Notably, green investment is the most influential predictor of green banking operations, driving banks to establish sustainable economic systems within the country.

Practical implications

The findings offer valuable guidance for scholars, financial institutions, policymakers and bank managers to develop and implement effective strategies for green banking operations. These strategies may significantly contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh.

Originality/value

This study is ground-breaking in associating sustainable innovativeness and green banking operations from a developing country. It enriches our understanding of green banking, aligning with existing literature. Additionally, PLS-SEM and BSEM provide strong validation of the proposed theoretical model.
