Abstract
The issue of racial discrimination concerning the commencement of walk-in vaccination at the Indoor Stadium Vaccination Centre on Friday, 24 September 2021 was widely addressed in the social media. Chaos ensued as an influx of people attended the centre and violated the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This paper examines the issue of racial discrimination during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Brunei. As a qualitative-descriptive study, data obtained from Brunei Dot Com, and Facebook page, were analysed using Fairclough's (1992) three-dimensional approach. Findings have shown presence of discriminatory attitudes among the local community displayed as deliberately or unintentionally. This is manifested in its linguistic representations, discourse production and consumption in the selected Brunei Dot Com and Facebook pages. This study indicates that a discourse is not only capable of shaping but is also shaped by the community.

Abstract
Purpose
This research aims to investigate the relationship between banks’ financial leverage and economic financial stability, and as a result, the research will discuss the role of earnings management (EM) in this relationship, since managers normally manipulate their financial reports when they show higher financial leverage. It is important to control the financial leverage in Jordanian banks based on the research results. The main objective is to mitigate the bank’s financial leverage risk as much as its relationship with financial stability. Results may be important for investors, managers, regulatory bodies and auditors in Jordan since they help strengthen financial stability in Jordan. Finally, the main objective of this study is to find a solution to maintain stable and real financial economy by finding the effect of higher financial leverage in Jordanian banks of managers’ cosmetic practices. This will be discussed through testing the role of EM of the relationship between firm’s financial leverage and financial stability.
Design/methodology/approach
In order for the researchers to analyze data, quantitative methods are processed statistically. Also, the researcher tests research conceptual framework according to the mediation model that was developed by Preacher and Hayes (2004). In Figure (1) of which panel A: determines a direct effect, while panel B: illustrates a mediating design. To construct the sample, the researcher used information extracted from Jordanian annual financial reports that is extracted from Amman Stock Exchange. The population of the study includes all Jordanian banks which are 26 banks, additionally, the period from 2008 to 2018 was used to illustrate data. The reason behind using this period is that to examine the variables relationships for and after 2008 financial crisis and its consequences. The researcher chose 2018 as the end period, that is because it is the year before COVID-19 period which covers 2019–2022, and this period is considered not normal. In comparison with past studies, the researcher used modified Jones Model to measure EM (Valášková et al., 2021; Nopiana and Salvi, 2022; Riahi, 2020; Quddoos et al., 2020; Cho et al., 2012), while financial stability and financial leverage was calculated using total debt/total equity (Nopiana and Salvi, 2022). Finally, financial stability is measured using the financial stability model for banking sector, but not for all economy that is because the banking sector represents 96% of the economy, also this study applied for banking sector. Missing values were replaced using the mean on SPSS. Finally, regression model and F-score, correlation have been examined in the research analysis.
Findings
Increased risk on enterprises has an impact on economic financial stability. And the interest rate result shows that Jordan’s central bank boosts interest rates during inflationary periods, increasing the risk to the economy’s financial stability. Furthermore, size has a minimal impact when compared to other variables, and greater business sizes signal more sophisticated transactions and higher leverage, reducing the economy’s financial soundness. Finally, ROA indicates increased bank performance, which contributes to the economy’s financial stability. While EM has a direct negative impact on financial stability, this conclusion is consistent with the researcher’s expectations. Because EM refers to the manipulation of financial report information, including information about financial leverage, manipulation also lowers investor confidence in bank share prices, affecting the stability of the economy’s financial system. It has little influence on the relationship between leverage and economic financial stability.
Practical implications
The implications of this research have been discussed through the research, for example, to maintain economic financial stability, auditors must take care through their role specially when there is higher financial leverage of Jordanian banks. Further, managers must pay attention before manipulating financial information if there is high financial leverage, because this will affect the economic financial stability. Lastly, the most important implication is that the maintenance of economic financial stability, and EM if not discovered for a period of time may show false signaling of economic financial stablity, and suddenly face financial crises.
Originality/value
Understanding the role of EM in the relationship between banks’ financial leverage the economic financial stability, may control many issues like the role of external auditor of reporting about the reliability of financial information (when there is high bank financial leverage, the auditor must exercise professional care and increase his sample to ensure that there are no cosmetic accounting), and when EM is in control, the economy will work smoothly and react normally to the effect of financial leverage of Jordanian banks. And the situation of 2008 crisis will not be repeated (because of the cosmetic practices by American firms for many years since 2008 with hidden cosmetic practices, suddenly, the 2008 crises happened). In conclusion, this discussion is original, since no literature theoretically discussed this issue before which (EM when financial leverage is high) may be applied in practice.

Abstract
The effectiveness of delivering information requiresindividuals, tools or channels that are superior and appropriate. This effort must be planned and considered carefully so that everything that is to be conveyed and implemented can be conveyed easily and effectively. Therefore, the use of rhetorical language is regarded as a stepping stone that provides confidence and a higher level of effectiveness. `Rhetoric as an influential art not only plays a role in strengthening power or influencing the thoughts and emotions of others but also stimulate sthe balance of social relations. Through this research, each rhetorical feature is highlighted to discuss its role and functions in the discourse. Using Enos and Brown’s Modern Rhetorical Theory (1993), a total of 20 official conferences on the latest developments of the spread of covid-19 infection were discussed. Findings have shown that there were four main types of rhetoric, i.e. Statistical conclusions which include 34% of expository techniques, 30% of descriptive, 33% of persuasion and only 3% for argumentation techniques. This also implies that rhetoric language is very important in ensuring the dissemination of knowledge among the institution and people is effective and and transparent.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to analyse the occurrence and distribution of different tree species in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, as a baseline for further inventories, and estimate the biomass per species and plot. Furthermore, it aims to measure forest biodiversity using established formulae for tree species diversity index, richness, evenness and accumulative curve.
Design/methodology/approach
Field data were collected, including stratification of forest sample plots. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out, and locally appropriate allometric equations were applied for biomass estimation.
Findings
Representative circular 556 forest sample plots of 1,000 m2 contained 13,135 trees belonging to nine tree species with a total aboveground biomass of 12,887 tonnes. Sixty-eight per cent of the trees were found between 2,600 and 3,400 masl; approximately 63 per cent had a diameter at breast height equal to 30 cm, and 45 per cent were less than 12 m in height. The Shannon diversity index was 1.82, and Simpson’s index of diversity was 0.813.
Research limitations/implications
Rough terrain, long distances, harsh weather conditions and location of forest in steep narrow valleys presented challenges for the field crews, and meant that fieldwork took longer than planned.
Practical implications
Estimating biomass in Gilgit-Baltistan’s forests using locally developed allometric equations will provide transparency in estimates of forest reference levels, National Forest Monitoring System in Pakistan and devising Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation national strategies and for effective implementation.
Originality/value
This paper presents the first detailed forest inventory carried out for the dry temperate and semi-arid cold region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

This study investigates the influence of corporate culture on financial reporting transparency within Iranian firms.
Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the influence of corporate culture on financial reporting transparency within Iranian firms.
Design/methodology/approach
Leveraging a dataset of 1,480 firm-year observations from the Tehran Stock Exchange spanning from 2013 to 2022, the study employs text mining to quantify linguistic features of corporate culture and transparency, specifically readability and tone, within annual financial statements and Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) reports.
Findings
Our results confirm a positive and significant relationship between corporate culture and financial reporting transparency. The distinct dimensions of corporate culture — Creativity, Competition, Control, and Collaboration — each uniquely enhance financial transparency. Robustness tests including firm fixed-effects, entropy balancing, Generalized Method of Moments (GMM), and Propensity Score Matching (PSM) validate the profound influence of corporate culture on transparency. Additionally, our analysis shows that corporate culture significantly affects the disclosure of business, operational, and financial risks, with varying impacts across risk categories. Cross-sectional analysis further reveals how the impact of corporate culture on transparency varies significantly across different industries and firm sizes.
Research limitations/implications
The study’s scope, while focused on Iran, opens avenues for comparative research in different cultural and regulatory environments. Its reliance on text mining could be complemented by qualitative methods to capture more nuanced linguistic subtleties.
Practical implications
Findings underscore the strategic importance of cultivating a transparent corporate culture for enhancing financial reporting practices and stakeholder trust, particularly in emerging economies with similar dynamics to Iran.
Originality/value
This research is pioneering in its quantitative analysis of the textual features of corporate culture and its impact on transparency within Iranian corporate reports, integrating foundational theoretical perspectives with empirical evidence.
