Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of Lat-Intersectology is to foster a deeper, more holistic understanding of societal structures, guiding more effective, inclusive policies and social justice initiatives. It champions the complexity of human diversity, urging a shift from linear analytical models to a more expansive, interlaced understanding of social realities.

Design/methodology/approach

Lat-Intersectology is a relatively new field of study that emerged from the intersection of Latino critical race and intersectionality theories. Lat-Intersectology seeks to build on Latino Critical theory (LatCrit) by examining the complex ways in which immigration status, race and ethnicity intersect Latino immigrants’ identities. Lat-Intersectology proposes a novel approach that seeks to unravel the deficit layers prevalent among Latino immigrants in the United States. This new approach emphasizes the understanding of these intersections not just as theoretical constructs but as privileged realities, influencing scholarly discourse. By foregrounding new perspectives, Lat-Intersectology contributes to a more nuanced understanding of US Latino immigrants’ social dynamics, promoting strategies for inclusion that are both informed by and tailored to the specificities of Latino immigrants’ context.

Findings

Lat-Intersectology provides a critical approach to the complex dynamics of privilege within Latino immigrant populations in the United States. It offers a nuanced analysis that recognizes diverse experiences shaped by race, ethnicity and legal status. The findings underscore that privileges are not monolithic among Latino immigrants; rather, they are fragmented and highly dependent on intersecting identities, providing a way for more inclusive and effective advocacy, tailored to the multifaceted nature of immigrant experiences in the United States.

Originality/value

Lat-Intersectology, as a groundbreaking methodology, shifts the paradigm in examining Latino immigrants in the United States by focusing on the intersections of their privileges, a concept often overshadowed by the dominant narrative of marginalization. This novel approach does not negate the systemic challenges faced but instead enriches our understanding by acknowledging the multifaceted identities within this community. By analyzing privileges alongside adversities, Lat-Intersectology facilitates a more nuanced discourse, recognizing that within the struggles, there are varying degrees of social advantages, perhaps tied to factors like skin color, immigration status, economic background or education. This methodology’s originality lies in its balanced view, offering a more comprehensive analysis of Latino immigrants’ experiences. Ultimately, the value of Lat-Intersectology is profound, as it fosters empathy and promotes a deeper comprehension of the complexities within human experiences, encouraging policies and social attitudes that reflect the diversity of experiences within the Latino immigrant community.

Abstract

The concept of frugal innovation has been scholarly discussed from different perspectives. It is a concept that has in the recent years been receiving much attention. In this view, much of the scholarly attention has been given to the benefits of frugal innovation. However, sparse and little attention has been given to the possibilities and challenges of frugal innovation in attaining sustainable development in African Nations. Much of the work has explored the benefits of disruptive frugal innovation. Given this background, this chapter, therefore, seeks to contribute to disruptive frugal digital innovation by highlighting the challenges and possibilities frugal innovation brings in an attempt to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially SDG 1 that aims to end poverty in all forms as well as SDG 8 that aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation. Hence, this chapter aims to unleash some possibilities and challenges that can be brought by frugal innovation. Using literature analysis from 21 articles from Google Scholar, the chapter pre-empts key definitions and highlights the SDGs, the possibilities and challenges brought by frugal innovation in achieving economic and social sustainability in Africa. It is through these insights that the chapter seeks to inform theory, practice and policy in the context of SDGs in Africa.

Abstract

Purpose

Exploring the entrepreneurial process, particularly the role of the entrepreneur’s psychological aspect in business models, has been less emphasized in previous research. This study aims to introduce a business model influenced by psychological factors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study reveals psychological factors in the entrepreneurial process through qualitative interviews, identifying two main categories: negative emotions and moderating effects. This study adopts a grounded theory approach using the constant comparative method, analyzing data through systematic coding procedures.

Findings

A new theoretical framework, Business Model for Sustainability by Psychology, is established, integrating business processes and psychological factors, and emphasizing the importance of addressing psychological challenges in the success of self-created brands. Furthermore, this study indicates that entrepreneurs are more likely to acquire resources and maintain a positive innovative attitude in a supportive social and cultural environment.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should expand to include various types of stores and entrepreneurs from different age groups. Expanding the research to include other industries would provide more comprehensive and representative results.

Practical implications

This research reveals interdisciplinary observations to better support entrepreneurs in facing challenges and promoting the success of entrepreneurial activities.

Originality/value

The psychological state of entrepreneurs and the social-cultural background are modeled when designing business integration frameworks to enhance the success of entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

According to recent studies, young people are most inclined to waste food, and an important category is represented by students. Unlike other young people, they possess several characteristics that influence their food waste behaviour. For these reasons, this study aims to identify the elements that influence students’ behaviour towards food waste in Italy to provide insights on how to reduce food waste among young consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

In this exploratory research, a Web survey involving 1,066 Italian students was used, and, after a factor analysis, a hierarchical multiple linear regression model was applied.

Findings

The findings showed that, at a young age, the food thrown away and the reasons are positively associated with food waste, while the family size and the actions that students adopt to prevent food waste are negatively associated with it.

Practical implications

Recognizing that students are the people who will shape the food waste scenario of the future, it is important to implement educational paths about it and to raise consumer awareness. The findings might provide interesting insights on how to develop educational campaigns for specific target groups, such as students. In fact, the results underline that local institutions and retailers should be involved in educational campaigns aimed at both addressing the motivations behind food waste and improving the actions people take to prevent it.

Originality/value

The paper revisits the issue using a relatively large sample of Italian students (youths aged 16–18 years). The results provide valuable insights on how to approach hypothetical Italian students in view of the potential development of new strategies for reducing food waste.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review how knowledge transfer, including knowledge integration, absorptive capacity and reverse knowledge transfer (RKT) in cross-border acquisitions, is examined in existing research work. The authors also propose directions to advance research in cross-border acquisitions.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review is conducted, and related propositions are advanced based on scientometric and bibliometric analysis of 146 papers published over 10 years about tacit knowledge transfer, innovation activities, industrial policy effect on merger decisions, top management experience and value creation in cross-border acquisition. First, the authors searched major themes with the help of Scopus, and later, the authors analysed all received literature with the help of VOS Viewer.

Findings

This review facilitates us to identify six clusters and main author keywords. These six clusters are the underlying six research streams, including RKT, cultural distances, value creation, absorptive capacity, innovation and reference to India and China.

Originality/value

Despite knowledge transfer constituting important antecedents and critical factors for the success of cross-border acquisitions, knowledge management in the acquired company through proper knowledge transfer and knowledge integration is not given enough attention. Current literature still fails to provide a holistic picture of how firms strategically manage knowledge post-acquisition. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to analyse the dynamics of knowledge transfer in cross-border acquisitions. The study is a novel attempt to relate current research themes to emerging areas of cross-border acquisitions.

Abstract

Purpose

The Metaverse holds vast amounts of user data, making it essential to address threats to its confidentiality, integrity and availability. These threats are not purely technological, as user actions and perceptions, shaped by psychological factors, can influence cybersecurity challenges. Thus, a holistic approach incorporating technological and psychological dimensions is crucial for safeguarding data security and privacy. This research explores users’ cybersecurity behavior in the Metaverse by integrating the technology threat avoidance theory (TTAT) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

The model was assessed using data collected from 746 Metaverse users. The empirical data were analyzed using a dual structural equation modeling-artificial neural network (SEM-ANN) approach.

Findings

The main PLS-SEM findings indicated that cybersecurity behavior is significantly affected by attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, perceived threat and avoidance motivation. The ANN results showed that perceived threat with a normalized importance of 100% is the most significant factor influencing cybersecurity behavior. The ANN results also showed that perceived severity with a normalized importance of 98.79% significantly impacts perceived threat.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research stems from developing a unified model grounded in TTAT and TPB to understand cybersecurity behaviors in the Metaverse. Unlike previous Metaverse studies that solely focused on measuring behavioral intentions or user behaviors, this study takes a step further by evaluating users’ cybersecurity behaviors. Alongside its theoretical insights, the study offers practical recommendations for software developers, decision-makers and service providers.

Abstract

Disruptive technologies have changed the way that firms model their business approach. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of novel digital technologies (artificial intelligence [AI] and machine learning [ML]) and big data analytics on the digital transformation of digital marketing firms. This research study is based on a review of the extant literature, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Gaps in the extant research literature were identified and emerged that are directly linked with the impact of AI, ML and big data analytics on digital transformation for digital marketing firms. Potential opportunities for digital transformation in digital firms were also unlocked, as well as related challenges. The research informs practice and policy for the current trends and provides future research directions. The study was limited to the application of the PRISMA methodology, which is incapable of fully providing testable results for a given study. Complementary cross-sectional research studies using the same methodology in different areas of study with the same topic can be applied to check for relevancy and applicability. This study contributes to digital marketing, information communication technologies, information systems practice and theory building. In addition, it provides researchers with an agenda for future digital transformation research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how individual differences and contextual factors affect audience responses to sponsored video content. Specifically, this study tests whether executive function (EF, both hot and cool) skills in young adults influence persuasion knowledge and advertising responses. The study further tests the moderating role of disclosure presence and country of participants (US vs The Netherlands).

Design/methodology/approach

An online experiment (N = 368) with a 2 (disclosure: present versus absent) × 2 (country: US versus The Netherlands) between subjects design featuring young adults (M age = 21.06; SDage = 3.06) is conducted.

Findings

Participants with more advanced cool EF showed a better understanding of the persuasive intent of the video, and hot EF was associated with higher brand recall. In addition, disclosures only enhance the understanding of persuasive intent of the video for people with less advanced levels of hot EF. Lastly, Dutch participants were more responsive toward the disclosure.

Originality/value

This study provides key insights regarding how young adults process sponsored content and the role that cognition plays in shaping responses.

Abstract

Purpose

The globalization of markets poses great challenges, and thus, the manufacturing businesses trying to expand their operations to cater to a global audience have to undergo significant transformations. Therefore, this research aims to identify key challenges and elucidate the critical success factors (CSFs) required for the global growth of manufacturing companies on a worldwide scale.

Design/methodology/approach

A range of interval-valued spherical fuzzy sets (IVSFs) and flexible methodologies such as the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) have been employed to evaluate the issues in detail. It calculates the effectiveness delivered by each critical success factor (CSF) and identifies the factors acting as a barrier to global market penetration.

Findings

This research highlights the transformative potential of smart manufacturing in developing economies, identifying CSFs such as government support, cost optimization and resilient supply chain management as essential for overcoming obstacles like over-reliance on foreign technologies, regulatory rigidity and skill gaps. The integration of IVSFS with AHP and DEA models offers actionable insights to foster localized innovation, reduce foreign dependencies and promote user-centric designs, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Originality/value

This study shows that IVSFs, AHP and DEA can be used together to estimate the global challenges of manufacturing firms in developing markets. The combination of efficient decision-making and these strategies is novel as it provides ways in which businesses in developing countries can deal with their obstacles and improve their competitiveness on the global stage.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to uncover the relationship between rising temperatures, increased greenhouse gas emissions and the prevalence of lethal violence, encompassing suicides and homicides. It also sought to identify how climate change affects different economic strata in countries, notably in high and middle-income nations, and across Asia and Africa.

Design/methodology/approach

This study rigorously explored the link between global climate change and lethal violence across 201 countries from 1970 to 2020. Climate change was measured using annual surface temperature fluctuations and greenhouse gas emissions, while lethal violence was estimated using data on suicides and homicides.

Findings

The analysis revealed significant positive associations between escalating temperatures, heightened greenhouse gas emissions and lethal violence. These connections were evident across different economic levels and geographic regions in Asia and Africa.

Originality/value

This study emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to combat human-induced climate change and mitigate its extensive negative impacts on society, particularly its association with increased violent behavior.
