Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the most significant barriers and the stationary barrier to modular construction (MC) implementation and promote MC widespread use. By doing so, the construction industry can leverage the benefits of MC, such as faster construction times, improved quality control, reduced waste and increased sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a Gini’s mean analysis approach to identify the stationary barriers hindering the MC adoption in residential projects. The research focuses on the Egyptian context and uses a questionnaire survey to gather data from professionals in the construction industry.

Findings

According to the survey findings, the top five significant MC barriers are inability to modify the design; contractors asking for high bidding prices (higher initial cost); scepticism, conservation and resistance of clients to innovation and change; transportation restrictions; and lack of a one-size-fits-all tool for the design. In addition, Gini’s mean of dispersion demonstrated that the stationary barrier that faces MC adoption is the apprehension that architectural creativity will suffer because of MC.

Practical implications

The identified obstacles could be useful for decision makers in countries that have not yet adopted MC and may aid in the planning process to manage the risks associated with MC projects. The paper stresses the significance of devising techniques to overcome these barriers and proposes several methods to tackle these challenges.

Originality/value

This study fills the knowledge gap by identifying the stationary barrier and emphasising the potential risks associated with MC barriers. Furthermore, it suggests several strategies for overcoming and reducing these barriers in developing countries residential projects.

Purpose: The study aims to explore the profound impact of virtual currencies and decentralised finance (DeFi) protocols on financial dynamics, user engagement, and operational aspects within the Metaverse.

Methodology: This research employs mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis to comprehensively investigate the pivotal roles of these elements within the dynamic virtual environment.

Findings: The mathematical equations applied in our study have illuminated the intricate mechanics of financial expansion, operational efficiencies, and user dynamics in the Metaverse’s virtual currency and DeFi systems. These insights underline the transformative influence of these digital ecosystems on future economies, emphasising the critical role of quantitative analysis in navigating and maximising their potential.

Significance: This research aims to shed light on the pivotal roles of virtual currencies and DeFi protocols through mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis. It contributes to a deeper understanding of their significance in shaping the future of virtual economies and financial interactions within the ever-evolving Metaverse.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare the properties and performance of ordinary Portland cement-based self-compacting concrete (OPC-SCC) and pozzolanic-based SCC (pozzolanic-SCC) in concrete applications. The research employs a comparative analysis to examine the workability and strength characteristics of these two types of SCC.

Design/methodology/approach

This study involves analyzing and comparing the properties and performance of OPC-SCC and pozzolanic-SCC through a literature review of relevant studies and experiments. The key findings indicate that the use of pozzolanic materials in SCC, such as fly ash, silica fume and metakaolin, can enhance the sustainability and durability of the concrete. The research also reveals that the choice of steel fibers and polypropylene fibers can impact the fire performance and mechanical properties of SCC.

Findings

The findings indicate that the inclusion of supplementary cementitious materials enhances the workability, strength and fire resistance of SCC to a greater extent compared to the addition of steel and polypropylene fibers.

Practical implications

The practical implications of this research are significant for selecting and utilizing SCC in concrete applications.

Originality/value

The originality of this research lies in the comparative analysis of OPC-SCC and pozzolanic-SCC, considering their properties, performance and practical implications. The study extends the existing knowledge on the use of SCC and provides insights into best practices for its application. The research contributes to the field of concrete technology and sustainable construction by highlighting the benefits and limitations of different types of SCC and their potential impact on concrete performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how two different types of brand-to-brand dialogues – “roasting” versus “toasting” – impact consumers’ brand perceptions, particularly perceived entertainment, and influence brand attitudes.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design comprises four studies. The preliminary study involves Web scraping to gauge consumer perception about the two communication approaches followed by two well-known brands. Study 1 involves an online experiment to compare these communication types within each brand tested in the pilot study and examines the mediation effect of perceived entertainment. Study 2, also an online experiment, investigates the role of message neutralization, demonstrating that “roasting” can be acceptable when the humor is neutralized. Study 3 further tests the effects of neutralized “roasting” at different levels of brand familiarity and personality.

Findings

Roasting can lead to more favorable consumer perceptions than toasting. The effect can be explained by roasting’s higher level of perceived entertainment. However, this positive outcome is contingent on the successful neutralization of the aggressive humor in the “roasting” messages. When it comes to brand familiarity and personality, familiar brands benefit more from neutralized “roasting,” whereas brand personality does not have a strong influence.

Research limitations/implications

The findings suggest that “roasting” can be effective when messages are neutralized, and “toasting” works best when spontaneous and genuine. It highlights how brand familiarity and personality influence consumer reactions, thus, offering strategic insights for both established and lesser-known brands. The study also prompts further research to examine other brand traits, cultural factors and behavioral dimensions in brand-to-brand dialogue, signifying the complexity and richness of this growing research area.

Practical implications

This study advises lesser-known brands to adopt “toasting” strategies to build a positive image, while established brands can try “roasting,” ensuring message neutrality to avoid negativity. The research emphasizes the role of brand familiarity and personality in shaping brand dialogues. Marketers must consider these to make humor strategies effective and bolster positive brand image.

Originality/value

This research uniquely examines message neutralization through contextual cues as a strategy brands can use to aid their sensitive dialogues with others on social media. The findings provide new insights into how brands can use different types of messages in digital communications to attract consumers and ensure positive reception, offering valuable guidance for academics and practitioners in brand-to-brand dialogue.

Abstract

Across Africa, disruptive digital frugal innovations (DDFIs) are evolving as potent catalysts for sustainable development. This research explored into the complex interplay between DDFI and sustainability, moving beyond traditional narratives of mere affordability to discover its potential for transformative change across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. This chapter sought to firstly unravel the multifaceted relationships between DDFI and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in diverse African contexts; secondly it examined the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of DDFI across key sectors, thus healthcare and agriculture, identifying both positive contributions and unintended consequences. Diffusion of innovation theory formed the lens of the study; qualitative data were analyzed according to emerging themes. Research findings revealed that implementation of DDFI exhibits immense potential to address critical sustainability challenges, empowering communities through social inclusion, improve access to essential services, and empower marginalized communities to actively participate in development processes. Data privacy, intellectual property rights, and potential exploitation of communities were some of the challenges noted which require careful consideration and responsible innovation practices. The study recommends to foster inclusive cocreation processes that involve local communities in needs assessment, design, and implementation of DDFI solutions and bridge the digital divide through investing in robust infrastructure development, digital literacy programs, and affordable access to technology.

Abstract

Purpose

Design for adaptability and disassembly (DfAD) is an effective method to reduce construction and demolition waste generation, landfill loads and greenhouse gas generation; preserve natural resources; and increase environmental awareness in the construction industry. However, it is an underexplored strategy due to a lack of information about projects and a set of agreed guidelines to guide buildings deconstruction. This study aims to understand how DfAD can support the sector’s transition toward circularity.

Design/methodology/approach

Through an integrative literature review, this study analyzed the current publications and terminologies used, identified the main themes discussed and described the key criteria for integrating deconstruction in the building design stage.

Findings

The results showed that the term DfAD encompasses different ecodesign strategies and is concentrated in six major thematic categories (design and construction principles, tools for DfAD, components and connections for DfAD, barriers, drivers and guidelines for DfAD, existing building stock potential and selective deconstruction process). In total, 60 criteria were presented to guide the deconstruction of buildings, emphasizing standardization, modularization and prefabrication of materials and components as fundamental requirements.

Originality/value

The study highlighted the need to expand the knowledge and training of the design team, establish public policies and tax incentives and develop tools, methods, and circular indicators to enable the implementation of deconstruction strategies for buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

Although circular economy (CE) principles are gaining increasing attention, a systematic understanding of material management strategies for an effective CE transition in construction is still lacking. This review addresses this gap by examining global construction practices, focusing on waste reduction and recycled materials. The study identifies key material management strategies for optimizing CE practices, supporting an integrated sustainable approach in construction.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis of 17,600 papers published from 2015 to 2022 was conducted, leading to an in-depth investigation of 44 relevant articles. The systematic review revealed material management strategies such as on-site sorting, deconstruction planning, modular building and reverse logistics, which were evaluated using quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis.

Findings

China emerges as a leader in construction material management research, reflecting significant global interest. Key findings indicate that strategies like design for deconstruction (DfD), minimization at design and modular construction achieve higher waste reduction, while building information modelling and on-site sorting show lower cost-saving potential. This research uniquely validates the structural feasibility of the most common recycled materials through qualitative comparative analysis of studies examined, emphasizing the critical role of CE design principles in sustainable construction.

Practical implications

The study validates circular design concepts like DfD, minimization of resource use at design and modularization, which facilitate closed-loop planning. Circular construction systems are technically and economically feasible, underscoring the need for mass implementation. Recommendations on material management and transition strategies are provided for stakeholders based on CE principles.

Originality/value

This study synthesizes recent research on sustainable material management, uniquely validating recycled materials’ structural viability and comparing material management strategies for optimal waste reduction and cost savings. It emphasizes multi-stakeholder initiatives spanning policy, industry and academia, providing practical insights to embed CE practices in sustainable construction.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumer behavior is evolving rapidly due to the increasing role of technology in daily life. Online food ordering has emerged as a key channel in this changing landscape. This paper investigates the relationships between online promotions, consumer skepticism, information sharing on social media and the intention to purchase food and beverages through online delivery services.

Design/methodology/approach

Measures were developed based on a review of existing literature. Data from 402 participants were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).

Findings

The study reveals that online promotions significantly impact consumers' sharing of restaurant posts. Additionally, consumer skepticism about online food sales affects both their sharing behavior and their intention to purchase online. Engagement in sharing restaurant posts online is a strong predictor of online food purchasing intentions.

Practical implications

The findings offer valuable insights for restaurant operators, policymakers and technology developers in the competitive online food delivery sector. They emphasize the importance of implementing innovative promotions and crafting appealing food presentations. These strategies can accelerate customer decision-making, attract new customers and contribute to market expansion and customer base sustainability.

Originality/value

This research provides significant insights for restaurant owners and contributes to the limited literature on online promotions, consumer skepticism and information sharing in the restaurant industry. It also lays the groundwork for future studies aimed at deepening understanding in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

The review paper aims to understand the development of workplace ostracism as a field in organizational studies from 2000 to the present. The study provides a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of the domain by exploring its antecedents, consequences, underlying mechanisms and buffering mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study analyses 134 published peer-reviewed empirical and non-empirical articles retrieved from the Scopus database. A systematic literature review and bibliometric analyses (using VOS viewer) have been used to gain insights into the development and trends within the field. Bibliometric analyses involved science mapping techniques such as co-citation analysis, co-occurrence of keywords and bibliographic coupling. Combining these three techniques, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the workplace ostracism research domain's historical, current and future landscape.

Findings

In the present study, through descriptive analyses, the authors uncovered publishing trends, productive journals, countries and industries that contribute to this research field. The systematic review enabled the showcasing of the current landscape of workplace ostracism. The bibliometric analyses shed light on major authors, influential articles, prominent journals and significant keywords in workplace ostracism.

Originality/value

This study enriches the existing literature by offering a comprehensive research framework for workplace ostracism. It goes beyond that by presenting significant bibliographic insights by applying bibliometric analyses. Furthermore, this study identifies and emphasizes future research directions using the theory, characteristics, construct and methodologies framework, aiming to expand the knowledge base and understanding of this topic.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of the interdisciplinary literature on drones in last-mile delivery (LMD) to extrapolate pertinent insights from and into the logistics management field.

Design/methodology/approach

Rooting their analytical categories in the LMD literature, the authors performed a deductive, theory refinement SLR on 307 interdisciplinary journal articles published during 2015–2022 to integrate this emergent phenomenon into the field.

Findings

The authors derived the potentials, challenges and solutions of drone deliveries in relation to 12 LMD criteria dispersed across four stakeholder groups: senders, receivers, regulators and societies. Relationships between these criteria were also identified.

Research limitations/implications

This review contributes to logistics management by offering a current, nuanced and multifaceted discussion of drones' potential to improve the LMD process together with the challenges and solutions involved.

Practical implications

The authors provide logistics managers with a holistic roadmap to help them make informed decisions about adopting drones in their delivery systems. Regulators and society members also gain insights into the prospects, requirements and repercussions of drone deliveries.

Originality/value

This is one of the first SLRs on drone applications in LMD from a logistics management perspective.
