Abstract

Purpose

The research examines how behavioral intentions, as a higher-order construct, indirectly affect financial inclusion through service trust, usage behavior and financial literacy in mobile money adoption.

Design/methodology/approach

Following the positivist research philosophy, a cross-sectional study design was used to collect data through questionnaires comprised of scales adapted from prior studies. With a usable sample size of 340 respondents, this study employs partial least squares structural equation modeling to assess the model.

Findings

The study revealed the significant indirect role of behavioral intention on financial inclusion through use behavior, behavioral intentions on use behavior through service trust, and use behavior on financial inclusion through financial literacy. The role of behavioral intentions on financial inclusion through serial mediation of service trust, use behavior and financial literacy was also found to be significant.

Originality/value

This study's novelty resides in examining the indirect relationship between behavioral intentions and financial inclusion, specifically via the serial mediation of service trust, use behavior and financial literacy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to investigate factors influencing the intention of villagers to use renewable energy. In this regard, by using the modified model of planned behavior, perceived behavioral control factors, perceived usefulness, perceived ease, mental norm and attitude toward energy sources for the intention of villagers to use energy sources. Therefore, the impact of each of these five variables was investigated in the form of research hypotheses.

Design/methodology/approach

This research has been done using a quantitative paradigm and a descriptive-correlation method. The statistical population of the study consisted of households (384) living in rural areas of Ilam province. A multistage cluster method was used to select the sample size. The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire that was developed based on the research background and research problem. Face validity of the research tool by professors of Islamic Azad University of Ilam and construct validity and reliability of research tools were confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and composite reliability. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS26 and SmartPLS3 software.

Findings

The results showed that the intention to use renewable energies (REs) among the rural peoples of Ilam province is affected by factors such as mental norms, attitude, perceived usefulness and perceived behavioral control and there is a positive and significant relationship between them.

Originality/value

In Iran, there is a lot of potential for usage of RE in rural communities, but compared to fossil fuels, had a small share in the current energy supply (Rezaei et al., 2022). RE technologies have not been sufficiently accepted and used by Iranian rural people (Rezaei and Ghafranfarid, 2018). Se the public acceptance of RE technologies is vital for successful process energy transfer (Huijts et al., 2012), non-acceptance of RE by society is a major obstacle to establishing RE technologies in Iran (Savari and Razmavar, 2022). It is expected that this research will fill the gap in the research literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to comprehensively identify supply chain risks and their causes, the factors influencing supply chain management and techniques to successfully mitigate and control supply chain risks in construction projects. This study developed a comprehensive framework showing various supply chain risks and how these risks that influence project execution are systematically identified and managed for the overall construction project success.

Design/methodology/approach

The research conducted was characterised by its descriptive, exploratory and quantitative nature. The collection of quantitative data was conducted by means of structured online questionnaires. The sample consisted of 205 construction project professionals who were selected randomly. This group included individuals with various roles in the construction industry, such as project managers, civil/structural engineers mechanical engineers, risk managers, architects, quantity surveyors, electrical engineers, construction managers, health, safety and environment managers, estate managers and other professionals. All participants were actively involved in construction projects located in the Gauteng province of South Africa. The data was analysed, using descriptive statistical methods, including factor analysis, reliability assessment and calculations of frequencies and percentages.

Findings

The result showed that predictable delivery, funding schedule, inventories, balanced demands, production capabilities, timely procurement, construction supply chain management coordination, delivery reliability, the proximity of suppliers, identification of supply chain risks in the conceptualisation stage of a project, identification of supply chain risks in the planning stage of a project, identification of supply chain risks in the execution stage and the reconciliation of material flows of the subcontractors with the contractors were identified as the key factors that influenced the construction supply chain management the most. The result also showed that subcontractor’s negative attitudes towards supply chain management, procurement delays, imbalanced demands, clients’ negative attitudes towards other project stakeholders, unpredictable delivery reliability, disorganised construction supply chain management approach, delayed funding, low delivery reliability, poor inventories, poor construction supply chain co-ordination, suppliers’ negative attitudes towards supply chain management and when the material flows of the subcontractors with the contractors are not reconciled were identified as the factors that have the greatest impacts on construction supply chain risks management.

Research limitations/implications

For future research, it is recommended to incorporate fourth industrial revolution) such as machine learning prediction models and algorithms, Artificial intelligence and blockchain to identify and manage supply chain, supply chain risks and project stakeholders involved in supply chain in construction projects. Green construction or sustainable construction was not fully covered in this study. The findings will be beneficial for sustainable construction projects in developing countries for sustainability, although it did not extensively cover green buildings and related risks.

Practical implications

Supply chain risk is one of the major challenges facing the construction industry because construction projects are complex by nature involving a lot of activities and participants with different responsibilities and tasks therefore it is highly recommended to implement the proposed frameworks in this paper from the conceptualisation stage to the execution stage, carefully identifying parties involved in supply chain, supply chain management, stakeholders, tasks, activities, responsibilities and supply chain risks generated as a result of the interactions between stakeholders involved in supply chain management and coordination to realise project objectives. The findings will be a foundation for identifying and managing supply risks in sustainable buildings in developing countries.

Social implications

Supply chain management is crucial in every enterprise. Managing supply chain risks is a major aspect of risk and disaster management and this implies that supply chain excellence is achievable by building communication, trust and mutual objectives, no blame culture, performance measurement, constant improvement and partnering.

Originality/value

The implementation of construction supply chain risk management framework involves assessing the impacts of these supply chain risks on the objectives of construction projects with respect to time, cost, safety, health, environment, stakeholders, financial performance, client satisfaction and quality.

Abstract

Purpose

This study delves into the relationship between local food systems and food tourism destinations, with a specific focus on resilience. Drawing on stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) theory, we investigate the determinants of this relationship such as destination food image (DFI), food authenticity (FA), food culture (FC), food experience (FE), food traditional value (FTV), local food products (LFPs) and resilient food system (RFS) as crucial components influencing the resilience of the food system.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected in Oita Prefecture, Japan. The domestic, international tourists and local communities of six cities in this area were part of the surveys. A partial least squares approach (Smart-PLS 3.2.9) was used to analyse the data collected.

Findings

The results revealed that a destination’s food image, shaped by authenticity, traditional value and experiences, positively impacts the resilience of the food system, benefiting both the local community and tourists. The findings extend the literature by explaining the resilience of food systems in tourist destinations.

Originality/value

The study provides direction for policymakers and stakeholders to bolster the sustainability and resilience of local food systems as part of tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable buildings are designed to minimise the adverse impacts of buildings on users, occupants, communities and the environment while enhancing client investment, contractors’ productivity and profit margins. However, sustainable buildings often experience significant rework. This research aims to evaluate the complex interrelationships among the causes of rework in sustainable buildings using structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques. By testing the theory and validating a framework addressing the causes of rework in sustainable buildings, the construction sector can make a meaningful contribution towards a sustainable future.

Design/methodology/approach

The study developed a questionnaire comprising 24 identified causes of rework in sustainable buildings, derived from an extensive literature review and field observations. The causes were evaluated using a 4-point Likert scale, ranging from less occurrence to very high occurrence. The survey was administered to construction professionals via online platforms and direct hand delivery.

Findings

The identified causes of rework were grouped into four components through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and subsequently validated using SEM. These components are competency, information, framework and plan. While the measurement model demonstrated robustness, the structural model indicated the need for further refinement. The study provides actionable strategies to mitigate rework, supporting the advancement of sustainable practices within the construction sector.

Originality/value

The findings of this research carry substantial theoretical and practical significance for advancing knowledge and practices in the sustainable buildings market. Theoretically, the study enriches the understanding of rework causes and their interrelationships, providing a foundation for future research. Practically, the results serve as a vital resource for stakeholders in the construction sector and offer actionable insights to enhance decision-making, improve project outcomes and foster sustainable building practices.

Abstract

Purpose

In the past 30 years, the subject of “Entrepreneurial University” has been very popular in scientific publications, according to the effects of the entrepreneurial university on the urban economy. Researchers have conducted several studies to create an appropriate structure due to the new missions universities had after the introduction of this subject, but these efforts have sometimes led to the parallel work of the established units or the lack of responsible units for some goals within the university.

Design/methodology/approach

The main goal of this study is to achieve the structural and functional model of an entrepreneurial university. For this purpose, 54 articles that specifically dealt with the creation and activities of the entrepreneurial university were studied using the thematic analysis method. Two groups of themes were categorized, one related to the structure of the entrepreneur university and the other related to the functions of the entrepreneur university.

Findings

In the structural dimension; this study proposes to introduce the vice-chancellor of technology and entrepreneurship within the university, which has units such as the university incubator, the technology transfer office and other units related to entrepreneurship in its sub-category, and the government–industry relations office in charge of establishing government and industry relations within the university. In addition, to avoid the parallel work of the entrepreneurial units this study suggests using the level of technological readiness as an index for promoting to another unit.

Originality/value

The findings can be used by policymakers in higher education and the national and local governments.

Abstract

Purpose

Construction renovation projects have been noted to suffer from uncertainties. While recent efforts have studied uncertainties affecting the duration of other types of projects, these efforts have overlooked construction renovation projects. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the uncertainty factors affecting the duration of construction renovation projects.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 226 responses from construction professionals were collected via a questionnaire survey on the impact of uncertainty factors on the duration of construction renovation projects. The subjective responses of experts from the industry were categorised using principal component analysis (PCA) before being exposed to objective analysis, assessment and modelling using a soft computing technique called fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE).

Findings

In total, 25 uncertainty factors were grouped as critical factors and were modelled. The PCA of the 25 critical uncertainty factors produced an 8-factor solution that grouped the uncertainty factors into 8 categories. The FSE modelling indicated that all eight groups are critical, but with varying levels of criticality on the duration of construction renovation projects.

Research limitations/implications

The study provides a basis for a cost-effective uncertainty management guideline to avoid time overruns in construction projects. It also offers a platform for choosing among renovation projects to decide whether or not a project will overrun its time or not.

Originality/value

The study identified and established critical uncertainties affecting the duration of construction renovation projects, thus providing the first empirical multi-attribute objective uncertainty evaluation for the duration of construction renovation projects.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address what it means to brand a city as “smart”. In other words, what ideas, understandings and actions are mobilized by the discourse of smart cities in a particular context.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking a brand interpretive approach, this paper uses deconstructive criticism to understand the performativity of smart cities within the Brazilian Charter for Smart Cities and to expose hegemonic power structures and the various colonizations that disenfranchise consumers and citizens of the Global South.

Findings

This paper finds that the branding of smart cities within the Brazilian Charter for Smart Cities is largely performative and rhetorical in nature. The authors identify those dimensions of the smart city that are materialized by this branding performance. For example, the authors identify how the Charter calls forth issues around technological solutionism, sustainability and social inclusion. At the same time, the analysis draws attention to the dimensions of smart cities that are disguised by such performances.

Research limitations/implications

The implications of the work suggest that the authors need to understand the designation “smart city” as a branding performance. More research is required in context to determine in exactly what ways smart city projects are being implemented.

Practical implications

Rather than adhering only to the rhetoric of smartness, cities have to work hard to make smartness a reality – a smartness constructed not just on technical solutions but also on human solutions. That is, the complexity of urban issues that are apparently addressed in the move to smartness demand more than a technological fix.

Originality/value

The research offers a novel lens through which to view smart cities.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to report on the insights from an international workshop entitled Co-creating place brands: sharing research insights and practical experiences towards more inclusive cities and regions hosted by the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The authors outline their collective reflection and the learnings for place branding theory and practice. Additionally, this paper discusses the need to build practitioner-scholar relationships in a co-creative style, to co-develop more inclusive models for co-creating place brands.

Design/methodology/approach

The report details key learnings of a whole-day interactive workshop featuring academic and practitioner presentations and discussions around inclusive approaches to co-creating place brands. The report is structured around key emerging themes and their associated learnings.

Findings

The workshop yielded six important learnings: 1) a key obstacle to co-creating place brands is that co-creation is often misunderstood among decision-makers; 2) all place stakeholders need to be taken seriously if co-creation is to shape a place’s identity and foster cohesion; 3) broad stakeholder inclusion in place branding can be problematic, but it is a necessary condition to the practice of place brand co-creation; 4) co-creating place brands requires going beyond marketing tools and deep into the levels of community life and place’s social and cultural construction; 5) co-creation at all stages of the branding process from conceptual development to performance measurement and sometimes unconsciously; 6) politics of place must be observed (this is crucial yet easily overlooked in co-creating place brands).

Originality/value

The micro-format of the workshop facilitated valuable interactions between academics and practitioners, effectively blending practical, “on the ground”-knowledge with academic ideas, concepts and models. This approach not only generated key learnings with the possibility to advance the field but also highlighted important future research directions.

Abstract

Purpose

Numerous attempts at installing Six Sigma (SS) have faced challenges and fallen short of the desired success. Thus, it becomes vital to identify the critical factors and characteristics that play a pivotal role in achieving successful adoption. Research has highlighted that a considerable number of corporate Six Sigma initiatives, around 60%, fail primarily due to the improper incorporation of essential elements and flawed assumptions.

Design/methodology/approach

To validate the influence of CSFs on Six Sigma accomplishment, the study employed a research design combining exploratory and mixed-methods approaches. The analysis focused on 260 completed questionnaires, and statistical methods including SEM, EFA, and CFA were utilized for data analysis.

Findings

The study acknowledged four essential components of CSFs that are imperative for sustaining the success of Six Sigma (SS): (1) Competence of Belt System employees; (2) Project management skills; (3) Organizational economic capability; and (4) Leadership commitment and engagement. These factors were identified as significant contributors to the maintenance of Six Sigma’s success.

Practical implications

The practical implications of this research imply that institutions, practitioners, and researchers can utilize the four identified factors to foster the sustainable deployment of SS initiatives. By incorporating these factors, organizations can enhance the effectiveness and longevity of their Six Sigma practices.

Originality/value

The investigation’s originality lies in its contribution to assessing critical success factors in Six Sigma deployment within the European automobile industry, utilizing a mixed-methods research design supplemented by descriptive statistics.
