Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the strategic adjustments in China's transportation structure, with a particular focus on the pivotal role of railway freight and its integration into the modern logistics system. It seeks to address the need for a more nuanced understanding of the “road to rail” policy, emphasizing the importance of intermodal collaboration and service of fragmented market demands.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a transport economics perspective to evaluate the achievements and shortcomings of China's transportation structure optimization. It bases its assessment of the current state of railway freight logistics, multi-modal transportation and the broader implications for the transportation service market on data analysis. The methodology includes a review of existing policies, an examination of industry practices and a comparative analysis with global trends in railway logistics.

Findings

The research underscores the importance of focusing on the development of non-bulk materials, noting the insufficiency in the development of China's rail multi-modal transportation and highlighting the instructive value of successful cases in open-top container road-rail intermodal transportation. The study posits that the railway sector must enhance cooperation with other market entities, aligning with the lead enterprises in the logistics chain that are characterized by speed, high value and strong coordination capabilities, in order to better serve the transportation market. This approach moves away from a reliance on the railway's own capabilities alone.

Originality/value

This paper offers original insights into the transformation of railway freight in China, contributing to the body of knowledge on transportation economics and logistics. It provides valuable recommendations for policymakers and industry practitioners, emphasizing the strategic importance of railway logistics in the context of China's economic development and intense competition in the supply chain. The value of the article lies in its comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in the adjustment of transportation structures, providing direction for the market-oriented reform of China's railway freight sector.

This paper aims to identify the impact of the new ambient air quality standards (AAQS) on firm innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the impact of the new ambient air quality standards (AAQS) on firm innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking listed companies from 2009 to 2014 as the research object, the authors focus on the quasinatural experiment of the pilot policy of the new AAQS and apply the time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) method to conduct the empirical test.

Findings

The authors find that the new AAQS has a negative effect on firm innovation, and this negative impact may be caused by the increased environmental expenditures following the implementation of the new AAQS. Furthermore, the authors find that firm profitability and state ownership weaken this negative effect, but the effect of the degree of industrial pollution is statistically insignificant.

Originality/value

The study is an initial effort to explore the causal effect of the new AAQS on firm innovation. This study enriches the literature on the impact of environmental regulations on firm innovation and provides some reference value for the formulation of environmental regulation policies in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a wheeled vehicle robot for adapting to the surface terrain of the 500-m diameter reflector of the FAST radio telescope in China.

Design/methodology/approach

By analyzing vehicles applied for different off-road environments, a six-wheeled architecture with a passive “triple-bogie” suspension is selected. A subscale model of the vehicle robot is designed, along with statics modeling and multibody simulations of the dynamics on simulated reflector panel surfaces. The slope- and step-climbing abilities of the subscale vehicle are discussed in accordance with numerical and experimental tests. An engineering scale vehicle is subsequently manufactured and tested on surface terrains of lateral as well as vertical gaps, and is finally validated on the FAST reflector.

Findings

This model of vehicle robot exhibits strong structure stability under desired payload. It can stably cross lateral gaps for maximum surface slope 28° and can traverse vertical gap for maximum surface slope 23°. The traversing abilities satisfy the mobility requirements subjected to surface terrains of FAST reflector.

Originality/value

The engineering vehicle robot negotiates the lateral as well as vertical gaps between triangle panels and has been successfully applied to the FAST reflector serving for inspection and maintenance work.

Abstract

Purpose

Researchers and practitioners have recently been interested in corporate sustainability performance (CSP). However, knowledge on measuring CSP is limited. Many CSP-measurements are eclectic, without guidance for contextual applications. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework that categorizes, explains and evaluates measurements based on their accuracy and precision and provides a guideline for their context-specific application.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a systematic literature review of an initial sample of 1,415 papers.

Findings

The final sample of 74 papers suggested four measurement categories: isolated indicators, indicator frameworks, Sustainability Balanced Scorecards (SBSC) and Sustainability Performance Measurement Systems (SPMS). The analysis reveals that isolated indicators are inaccurate and imprecise, limiting their application to organizations with delimited, specific measurements of parts of CSP due to the risk of a GIGO-effect (i.e. low-quality input will always produce low-quality output). CSP-indicator frameworks are imprecise but accurate, making them applicable to organizations that handle a more significant amount of CSP data. They have a risk of greensplashing, i.e. many indicators not connected to the industry, organization or strategy. In contrast, SBSCs are precise but inaccurate and valuable for organizations desiring a comprehensive strategic management tool with limited capacity to handle sustainability issues. They pose a risk of the streetlight effect, where organisations do not measure relevant indicators but what is easy to measure.

Originality/value

The ideal CSP-measurement was identified as SPMSs, which are both precise and accurate. SPMSs are useful for organizations with complex, comprehensive, connected and tailored indicators but are methodologically challenging.

Abstract

Purpose

Foreign construction subsidiaries play an important role in the global construction market. How to establish and maintain long-term sustainable performance has attracted increased attention, but only a few studies have considered this issue. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between autonomy and the sustainable performance of subsidiaries and to provide support for their management control modes.

Design/methodology/approach

From an institutional logics perspective, empirical research using a questionnaire survey was conducted following the methodological framework of this study. Relevant data were collected from 106 experienced managers of foreign construction subsidiaries, and the hypotheses were tested through a regression model.

Findings

The results show that foreign construction subsidiaries have a high degree of operational autonomy, which tends to strengthen their embeddedness in the host country and improve their sustainable performance. However, the role of strategic autonomy is not found to be significant. The moderation results show that the positive impact between operational autonomy and external network embeddedness is strengthened by institutional distance. Institutional distance has no significant moderating impact on the relationship between strategic autonomy and external network embeddedness, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

Geographical limitations may exist as the survey is focused on the Chinese construction foreign subsidiaries. However, based on an institutional logics perspective, this study discusses the management control mode of foreign subsidiaries, which enriches the antecedents of sustainable performance and can provide an in-depth explanation of the effects of the organizational strategies of multinational construction enterprises.

Practical implications

This study provides beneficial information for the sustainable performance of foreign construction subsidiaries. It will provide detailed guidance to managers located in different institutional environments on optimally promoting the sustainable development of subsidiaries.

Originality/value

This study identifies autonomy as an important antecedent, making it one of the first studies investigating autonomy on the sustainable performance of foreign construction subsidiaries. The findings of this study can contribute to the construction subsidiaries' sustainable performance literature and provide novel, comprehensive knowledge for academia and practice.

Abstract

Purpose

As quality becomes increasingly prioritized in supply chain management, understanding how supply chain quality risk management (SCQRM) practices impact quality performance (QP) is essential. This study investigates the effects of two SCQRM practices – risk prevention (RP) and proactive product recall (PPR) – on QP, with a particular focus on the mediating role of supply chain quality integration (SCQI).

Design/methodology/approach

A structured survey was administered to gather data from 400 Chinese manufacturing firms. Structural equation modeling was employed to evaluate the proposed relationships among SCQRM practices (RP and PPR), SCQI and QP.

Findings

The findings reveal that both RP and PPR significantly and positively influence QP. Specifically, in the structural model, RP exerts a positive effect on SCQI, while PPR also positively impacts SCQI. Additionally, SCQI serves as a mediator between RP and QP, as well as between PPR and QP.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the supply chain management literature by elucidating the beneficial effects of RP and PPR on QP and identifying SCQI as a key mediating factor in these relationships. Leveraging information processing theory (IPT), the study provides new theoretical insights into the mechanisms through which SCQRM enhances QP via SCQI.

Abstract

Purpose

Livestream selling is becoming an increasingly popular practice adopted by online retailers to develop a consumer-centric supply chain (CCSC). It improves consumer experience by integrating chat, watch and purchase functions, while also altering consumer behaviors by increasing impulse purchases. Online retailers’ responses to this change potentially impact suppliers’ operational processes. This study aims to empirically examine how livestream selling affects suppliers’ operational performance in terms of lead time and how suppliers’ product variety and order fulfillment capabilities moderate such an impact.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data from a leading online retailer in China, the authors use a least squares model with fixed effects to test the relationships. Both the two-stage instrumental variable model and the two-stage Heckman model are used to address potential endogeneity in this study.

Findings

The findings show that retailers’ usage of livestream selling can increase suppliers’ lead time. Furthermore, the negative impact is enhanced when a supplier has a higher level of product variety or a weaker order fulfillment capability.

Originality/value

This study explores how livestream selling alters consumer behavior, adversely affecting upstream suppliers’ operational performance. It underscores the need for a CCSC approach across all tiers, not just those closest to consumers. To achieve this, the research suggests that suppliers must align their capabilities with retailers’ consumer-centric practices to develop a CCSC, particularly by improving order fulfillment capability and cautiously expanding their product variety in livestream selling. The research further highlights the importance for retailers to consider changes in lead time to enhance the application of traditional inventory theory in the context of livestream selling.

Abstract

Purpose

Though there is literature on green collaboration to supplier selections, there are hardly any empirical studies that analyze collaborative networks toward green supplier selection (GSS) from the perspective of green relational capital (GRC). Therefore, this study aims to fill this research gap by analyzing the development of collaboration toward GSS through the lenses of GRC. Also, this study explores how collaboration between institutions and their relevant green stakeholders, framed through the lens of GRC influences the selection of green suppliers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses an exploratory case study approach involving public universities in Ghana. This study is based on interviews conducted with 27 key respondents across seven universities. A purposive sampling technique was used in selecting respondents who were interviewed face-to-face with a semi-structured interview guide. Atlas ti software was used to generate themes for discussion.

Findings

This study’s findings suggest that the reason green criteria are not integrated into supplier selection is due to an insufficient collaboration among relevant green stakeholders. Through green training workshops, conferences, continuous professional development and affiliation with professional bodies, procurement practitioners can develop a collaborative network among themselves to promote the integration of green sustainability into supplier selection. Constructs that help to establish strong collaborative network identified in this study include trust and consistency, mutual benefits, obvious intentions and effective communication.

Practical implications

This study identified constructs promoting effective green collaboration toward the adoption of GSS. These constructs as identified in this study, provide a clear means of developing green collaboration among relevant stakeholders. By fostering and developing collaboration, the main construct of GRC, institutions can successfully integrate green sustainability into their supplier selection process, leading to long-term benefits for both the environment and the institution.

Social implications

Collaboration toward integration of green sustainability into supplier selection necessitates engagement with various relevant green stakeholders, including suppliers, customers, government bodies, colleagues in sister institutions and environmental advocacy groups. This fosters a sense of shared responsibility and collective action toward sustainability goals.

Originality/value

This study offers empirical evidence on the impact of collaboration on supplier selection and green sustainability performance, contributing to the existing body of literature. By analyzing collaboration, a perspective of GRC, toward the integration of green sustainability into supplier selection is considered as a novel study.
