Abstract

Purpose

The present study investigates a nexus between digital public services (DPS) and international tourism empirically.

Design/methodology/approach

This article analyzes the nexus of DPS and international tourism by using the international sample of 23 European countries in the span of nearly 10 years from 2011 to 2019. Various econometric techniques, including the panel-corrected standard error (PCSE) model and the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) model, are employed to confirm the author’s findings. Furthermore, the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method is applied to measure the short- and long-run effects of DPS on international tourism developments.

Findings

Tourism is positively influenced by digitalization, implying that the enhancement of digital public service usage results in the development of the tourism industry. However, when looking at the effect of DPS in the short term, a negative impact can be found on tourism, as the density reported in the previous analysis stated a negative response to the tourism density. This effect spans the course of several facets, such as international tourism arrivals, international tourism receipt, international tourism, receipts (% of total exports) and global tourism expenditure (% of total imports). Although the result is unfavorable in the short term, digitalization promises great prospects for tourism in the long term. Notably, an improvement in economic growth, financial development as well a reduction in the pervasiveness of corruption and an improvement of environmental quality are transmission channels through which DPS have favorable influences on tourism activities.

Practical implications

The author’s findings are vital for managers and policymakers to establish a comprehensive grasp of digitalization's role in deciding tourist adoption. This is because digitalization has been proven to play a role in determining tourism adoption.

Originality/value

The present study is the first to examine the relationship between DPS and international tourism empirically. The author is also the first to distinguish the effects of digitalization in the short and long run.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the role of multi-national enterprises in addressing grand societal challenges, emphasising the need for integrating environmental and social aspects into business models. Drawing on the books of Geoffrey Jones (2023) “Deeply Responsible Business” and Rob van Tulder and Eveline van Mil (2023) “Principles of Sustainable Business”, the paper provides comments and analysis of how principles and values can guide engaged international business (IB) scholarship and responsible leadership to effectuate meaningful change.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a dialogical review, as a curated discussion of the books whereby the authors attempt to co-construct a research and teaching agenda for responsible and engaged IB scholarship.

Findings

The paper highlights the critical importance of aligning business strategies with societal needs. Companies that adopt ethical principles, or adopt the sustainable development goals (SDGs) via principles-based frameworks, can achieve significant positive impacts.

Research limitations/implications

The paper follows a viewpoint/perspective format. It relies on underpinning historical case studies and selected theoretical frameworks, which may not capture the full complexity of contemporary business environments. Scholars should conduct future research to study the underpinning principles and frameworks deployed in various industries and regions.

Practical implications

The paper suggests that business leaders should learn from the past to adopt a values and principles-based approach to integrate sustainability into their core strategies. It also highlights the importance of transforming the higher education teaching experience towards a value and principles-based one.

Social implications

This paper underscores the potential of businesses to drive positive societal change by addressing environmental and social challenges. By adopting ethics-based value systems and aligning organisations with the SDGs, companies can help mitigate pressing issues, such as poverty, inequality and climate change. The authors suggest reading “Deeply responsible business” and “Principles of Sustainable Business” to influence public attitudes towards corporate social responsibility and foster a more sustainable and equitable global economy.

Originality/value

The paper offers a curated discussion and synthesis of historical and contemporary perspectives on sustainable business practices. It bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing actionable frameworks and tools for business leaders and scholars.

Abstract

This chapter addresses the complex interplay of ethics, privacy, and legal issues in the realm of data-driven marketing. Ethical and privacy concerns dominate marketers in today’s time of ever-expanding data and increasing data analysis sophistication. This chapter outlines the significance of data-driven marketing in the context of big data. It throws light on the challenges of data-driven marketing and also discusses the importance of data-driven marketing in value creation for the company as well as the consumer. This chapter underlines the key principles and legal structures guiding data-driven marketing practices. It also delves into the ethical dimensions of data, specifically its collection, analysis, and utilization. By analysing the above, this chapter suggests strategies for using data-driven marketing ethically and without compromising consumer privacy. This chapter, thus, aims to provide marketers with an extensive understanding of the ethical and legal considerations in data-driven marketing so that they can successfully use data-driven marketing, which is a powerful tool in the age of big data.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial institutions such as Bureaux de Change are susceptible to money laundering, posing a significant risk to a nation’s financial stability and security if not properly regulated and supervised. Botswana is a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global organisation that sets standards, promotes policies to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing and arms proliferation, all to safeguard the global financial system. Efforts have been made to incorporate FATF recommendations on money laundering into the fiscal laws of Botswana. However, some deficiencies still remain. Although there are no recorded cases of money laundering in Botswana, Bureaux de Change entities are susceptible to it as their business involves cash transactions and rapid money transactions. This paper aims to analyse the challenges faced by Bureaux de Change entities in combating money laundering in Botswana. This will be done by assessing the effectiveness of the current regulatory framework and role of the regulatory authorities in combating money laundering within Bureaux de Change entities.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the obstacles faced by Bureaux de Change entities in Botswana when it comes to combating money laundering. A qualitative research method and doctrinal research method are both used in this context.

Findings

It is hoped that policymakers and other relevant persons will adopt the recommendations provided in the paper to enhance the curbing of money laundering in Botswana.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is only limited to the regulation of money laundering within the Bureaux de Change entities in Botswana and does not provide empirical research.

Practical implications

This paper is useful to policymakers, lawyers, law students and regulatory bodies especially in Botswana.

Social implications

This paper suggests changes to the Bank of Botswana (Bureaux de Change) Regulations of 2004 to improve their effectiveness, robustness and competitiveness in combating money laundering.

Originality/value

This paper is original research on the challenges of combating money laundering within Bureaux de Change entities in Botswana.

Abstract

Voting power in crediting organisations plays a huge role in determining a country's fiscal power and access to capital, determining who has power and access to capital when it comes to crisis management. In this chapter, I explore the impact it played during the COVID-19 pandemic to highlight the need to democratize global capital when it comes to global crisis management. Parallels will be drawn between the pandemic and the climate emergency to demonstrate how the democratic deficit in global capital translates to disastrous policymaking in the medium and long term for all parties. In response to this, I argue for the democratisation of global capital and highlight how the New Development Bank can provide the necessary force for this essential shift. Pre-empting the common antagonism regarding pooling national sovereignty to supernational organisations and richer countries unilaterally surrendering their privileged position, I will also highlight how continued poor crisis management threatens all nations' national sovereignty in the long-term, given the existential threats of the climate emergency and future pandemics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to nuance the understanding of hazing’s negative impact on newcomers.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through a qualitative interview study of recently employed nurses’ (n = 19) and nursing students’ (n = 42) hazing experiences and analysed through reflexive thematic coding.

Findings

The analysis uncovered two themes relating to hazing’s normative harm on newcomers’ professional self-image: “Being denied a voice” and “Being infantilised.”

Originality/value

This paper challenges the two-dimensional challenge-hindrance framework for elucidating the individual consequences of hazing and suggests adding threat stressors.

Abstract

Purpose

Borrowers’ intentional non-payment of bank loans despite being able to pay is a financial crime. This paper explores how willful loan defaulting became a societal practice in Bangladesh, where non-performing loans (NPLs) are assumed to surpass BDT 4 trillion mainly due to habitual defaults of large borrowers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study reviewed publicly available documents and interviewed bank managers, loan takers, regulators and industry experts. It drew on Pierre Bourdieu’s practice theory, specifically the concepts- habitus, capital and field, to explain the permeation of “intentional defaulting culture” in the banking industry.

Findings

Willful defaulting in Bangladesh is an outcome of a harmonious blend of defaulters’ mindsets and possession of capital supported by the structure and rules of the field. The socio-political context facilitates, rather than impedes, the “unwillingness to pay” motive of the habitual defaulters due to their possession of different forms of capital.

Research limitations/implications

Understanding of how the crime of willful defaulting emerges and persists in society may have policy and practice implications in economies suffering NPL problems.

Originality/value

This study explicates how individual intents and institutional structures jointly amplify financial crimes in society.
