Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the impact of the virality of legal cases on social media on law enforcement. This research also aims to find a balance between virality and the value of justice in society so that it can have a positive impact on law enforcement.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach used in this research is a case approach. The case approach is used by analyzing the law enforcement process carried out by the police to the judge’s considerations (ratio dedicendi) in deciding legal cases that went viral on social media. The cases that became the research object were determined through the purposive sampling method.

Findings

The no viral no justice phenomenon is a form of community sympathy and concern in the digital space for injustice in the law enforcement process. As one of the countries with the largest number of social media users in the world, Indonesia has the potential for digital space to form large collective movements and contribute to upholding justice in a practical way. On the positive side, no viral no justice has succeeded in speeding up the law enforcement process and creating a transparent law enforcement process. From the negative side, no viral no justice does not guarantee and does not provide legal certainty and justice in the legal process (due process of law) because the law is influenced by strong public pressure.

Research limitations/implications

This research examines several legal cases that attracted public attention and went viral through the digital space in Indonesia.

Practical implications

The results of this research are useful for finding a balance between the principle of virality and the value of justice in society so that the no viral no justice phenomenon has a positive impact on law enforcement.

Social implications

For the community, the results and recommendations in this study can create and strengthen civic engagement in the law enforcement process through digital space. For law enforcers, especially police, prosecutors and judges, it is hoped that the results of this study will improve the quality of fair, transparent, fast and impartial law enforcement.

Originality/value

This research identifies and analyzes several legal cases that have gone viral so that the influence of the virality of legal cases and public pressure on law enforcement can be found.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to determine the impact of perceptual and attitudinal factors on employees’ counterproductive work behaviour (CWB). The study emphasises the verification of the direct, indirect, linear and non-linear effects of several antecedents of CWBs. The moderating role of self-efficacy is also investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 1,215 employees from several industrial companies in Southern Iraq. The study used the hybrid approach to data analysis, based on a dual-stage SEM-ANN, i.e. partial least squares structural equation modelling and artificial neural network approach.

Findings

Results indicate that most of the proposed variables predict CWB and that abusive supervision and perceived organisational politics (POP) positively affect job burnout (JB) through job stress. In addition, non-linear relationships, JB, abusive supervision and POP are the most important in predicting CWB. The study confirms that a negative perception of the work environment increases the likelihood of harmful behaviours in the organisation and that self-efficacy can reduce such a perception.

Originality/value

The importance of the current study is summarised in its attempt to verify the antecedents of CWB by relying on a two-step approach to test linear and non-linear relationships. This approach will greatly enhance theories regarding adverse behaviour in the workplace, especially, with a fairly large sample size.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the emergence of a new structural configuration of globalization, with the 2008 global financial crisis serving as the first symptom of this change. By introducing the “Evolutionary Structural Triptych” (EST), this research seeks to understand the basic components of the new evolutionary trajectory of global capitalism post-2008. The study places emphasis on its interdependent and coevolving economic, political and technological dynamic facets.

Design/methodology/approach

This research introduces the EST framework, critically contrasting it with conventional understandings in international political economy (IPE) to provide a comprehensive and structured analysis of global developments after 2008. It traces the phases of global capitalism since Second World War, examines the central dynamic dimensions during each evolutionary phase, identifies the basic patterns and delves into the foundational elements of the emerging era of globalization.

Findings

The analysis reveals three key findings. First, the emerging restructured globalization indicates a need for a new balance in the contemporary world system; however, this balance cannot be achieved within the architecture of the old system. Second, the new era of globalization necessitates a re-equilibrated approach across different dimensions of geopolitical stability, economic development and innovation. This approach should emphasize sustainability, adaptability, resilience and inclusivity and lean toward responsible, open and organic innovation models for a revamped global structure. Third, while many current IPE theories tend to compartmentalize aspects of the new globalization, the EST advocates for a holistic perspective that integrates politics, economics and technology within the framework of global trends. This perspective bridges existing gaps and offers actionable insights for a dynamic and inclusive global future.

Originality/value

The paper presents the EST as a novel analytical instrument in the realm of the modern IPE. This tool uniquely places technology and innovation at the forefront, parallel to economic and political spheres, to comprehend the progression of globalization. In doing so, it highlights the intertwined relationship of these structural dimensions in shaping the future of the subject of the IPE.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the effects of two types of self-disclosure by influencers (i.e. personal self-disclosure and professional self-disclosure) on followers’ parasocial relationships with them and online engagement with their content, which eventually affect followers’ purchase intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data based on a cross-sectional survey of 823 social media users. Structural equation modeling analysis was used to test the overall structural model and the mediating roles of parasocial relationships and engagement.

Findings

This study reveals that influencers’ personal self-disclosure has a positive impact on followers’ parasocial relationships with them and online engagement with their content. Interestingly, the results indicate an inverted U-shaped relationship between influencers’ professional self-disclosure and followers’ parasocial relationships, as well as online engagement with the influencers’ content. Furthermore, followers’ parasocial relationships and engagement partially mediate the impact of influencers’ personal and professional self-disclosure on followers’ purchase intentions.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the literature by revealing the underlying mechanisms of the differential effects of influencers’ personal and professional self-disclosure on followers’ purchase intentions.

Practical implications

The findings will assist marketers in leveraging influencer-generated content to enhance influencer marketing effectiveness.

Originality/value

This research provides a better understanding of the potential linear and nonlinear effects of influencers’ self-disclosure on followers’ parasocial relationships and engagement in social media marketing.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the online shopping trend, many women still prefer in-store experiences for trying on and buying clothes. The body positivity movement endorsed by many brands implies that all women, even those with lower body appreciation, should feel included in this setting. However, studies have yet to quantitatively explore the mediating role of women’s positive body image between clothing size and in-store experiences. To address this gap, this study examined the in-store experiences of 642 women from largely Western nations (Mage = 45.96, standard deviation (SD) = 9.31) who self-reported as straight-, mid- and plus-sizes and the mediating role of body appreciation.

Design/methodology/approach

Participants completed online questionnaires with measures including clothing size, body appreciation, in-store experiences and preferences for in-store changes.

Findings

Women of mid-size and plus-size were more likely than women of straight-size to report lower body appreciation, which led to a greater desire for guidance from staff about styles but less likelihood to approach them, higher discomfort going up a size and lower confidence trying on clothes. In contrast, straight-size women generally felt more comfortable and confident in-store clothes shopping. A direct link between clothing size and lower purchase intentions without in-store representation was found; however, body appreciation did not mediate this link. Preferences for in-store changes included better support from sales staff and more inclusive imagery.

Originality/value

This study indicates that in-store clothes shopping may not feel like retail therapy for women who identify as mid-size or plus-size and experience low body appreciation. It highlights the need for comprehensive reform within the fashion retail industry by prioritizing inclusivity through better staff support and in-store representation for all sizes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors affecting the dividend policy of knowledge intensive firms (KIFs).

Design/methodology/approach

The study collects data for 86 KIFs listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. The Hausman test is applied to choose an appropriate model. Based on the results of the Hausman test, the random effects panel regression method is applied to investigate the determinants of the dividend policy of sampled firms.

Findings

The authors test the effects of six factors on the dividend policy of KIFs, namely, profitability, leverage, free cash flows, firm size, investment and growth opportunities and liquidity. The study found that profitability, free cash flows, liquidity and firm size are significant determinants of the dividend policy of KIFs, while growth and investment opportunities as well as leverage have insignificant effects on the dividend policy of KIFs.

Originality/value

Findings of previous studies on factors affecting dividend policy across various industries cannot be generalized to other industries because of the industry influence on dividend policy. Considering this industry effect on dividends, the present research investigates the dividend policy of KIFs. The KIFs have emerged relatively recently owing to technological advances and remain relatively less explored industry in the context of dividends. Therefore, the paper presents new evidence on the dividend policy of Indian KIFs.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to develop a measurement scale for assessing agripreneurial competencies relevant to emerging economies in alignment with the SDG2 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Design/methodology/approach

The scale development procedure includes item development and refinement, data collection, reliability and validity tests and scale purification with exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Findings

The validated scale carries eight dimensions of competencies: Agreeableness (AG), Technological Competency (TC), Competitive Spirit (CS), Innovativeness (IN), Self-Confidence (SC), Social Responsibility (SR), Conscientiousness (CO) and Leadership (LS). The analysis puts forth a good and fit model, and the new scale reports sufficient convergent and discriminant validity.

Research limitations/implications

This study is focused on the agripreneurial competencies of individual agripreneurs; institutional agripreneurs are excluded from the study.

Social implications

Identifying prominent agripreneurs using the scale developed from this study will aid in allocating various government and non-governmental organisations' assistance to agripreneurs. Since developing economies rely heavily on agriculture, any positive contribution can help alleviate poor economic growth, end hunger, and promote sustainable agriculture (SDG 2 of 2030).

Originality/value

Though several scales for measuring entrepreneurial competencies are available, there is no standard scale to measure agripreneurial competencies. This article presents the development and validation of a measurement scale to assess the major competencies of agripreneurs that influence agripreneurship performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to examine the relationship between the banking sector and stock market development in India.

Design/methodology/approach

To analyze the relationship between banks and stock market development, the ratio of stock market capitalization to GDP is proxied by stock market development. The determinants of the stock market development are used for analysis namely domestic credit to the private sector as a ratio of GDP is used as a proxy for the development of banks, saving rate, per capita real GDP, and inflation. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL)-Bounds testing approach is used for the analysis. The paper also used the unrestricted error correction model and CUSUM and CUSUM square test to check the stability of the model.

Findings

The ARDL bounds test found that there is a long-run relationship between stock market development and bank-centered financial development. The results also revealed that the stock market is positively influenced by the development of banks, savings, and per capita real GDP in the short-run as well as long-run.

Research limitations/implications

This paper suggests that improvement of banking sector plays an important role to increase liquidity of the capital market development in India. This paper also suggests that the economic growth and savings rate have positive impact to induce the capital market growth in both short run and long run.

Originality/value

The study has investigated the empirical relationship between the banking sector and the stock market development in a different methodological approach by using an ARDL model which is appropriate for a small sample size. There are few studies related to bank-centered financial development and stock market development in the context of India.

Purpose

This study aims to examine whether authentic flirting behavior contributes to positive service outcomes (i.e. rapport and tip size) in luxury vs non-luxury restaurants.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 261 participants was randomly assigned to reading scenarios depicting four conditions in a 2 × 2 between-subjects design: restaurant status (luxury vs non-luxury) and flirting type: authentic vs fake.

Findings

The results showed that rapport mediated the relationship between flirting type and tip size. Moderated mediation analyses further revealed that the mediated relationship was stronger for non-luxury restaurants alone. Whereas authentic flirting amplified rapport and tip size in non-luxury restaurants, it had no effect in luxury restaurants.

Originality/value

Flirtatious behavior has not been examined in the context of luxury restaurants. This study provided an opportunity to explore whether flirting would be perceived as unprofessional and as exceeding personal boundaries as in other settings, damaging to the meticulous service experience, or whether interpersonal friendly gestures can take place without undermining the service interaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The study investigated which variables and family dynamics influence the entrepreneurship and succession process in the Italian ice cream sector. In light of the consequences of Covid-19, the research has identified the elements on which female leadership is based.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using the qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews at a homemade ice cream production organization.

Findings

Findings highlight that to pursue business longevity, one must maintain one’s family identity and values and, therefore, offer quality products. However, the company must know how to innovate to remain competitive and optimize its processes. All this is possible by creating a dialogue and transferring knowledge within the family business to strengthen and prepare future successors. The analysis of the family structure highlights how cultural family identity has privileged gender identity as a factor that has guided the development process since the first generation, in this case, allowing for expansion in terms of size and family. In addition, the results of the analysis highlighted two distinct scenarios within the same case study: the first emphasises the limits of the lack of management of a succession process; the second shows the openness of the organization to the introduction of innovations, expansion strategies and the entry of new partners outside the family.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the knowledge and understanding of how, in light of the pandemic, the resilience of these family businesses contributes to redesigning their internal governance system in favour of the second generation and effectively accelerating the succession process.
