Abstract

Purpose

In the current competitive era of industrialization, a significant level of innovation is necessary to meet the growing competition. There are many economic forces that determine the pace of innovation within a country. Among others, this study aims to focus on exploring the relevant role of corruption control (CC) in determining the innovation level.

Design/methodology/approach

For empirical analysis, the authors sample the 24 years of data (1996–2019) of Asian economies and use the fully modified ordinary least square (OLS) and dynamic OLS models to check the regression among variables. The selection of both techniques is based upon the empirical suggestions offered by unit root testing and the Johansen cointegration test.

Findings

The empirical findings infer the positive and statistically significant role of CC in boosting innovation. Strengthening the corruption-free environment encourages innovation activities within the country. In addition, foreign direct investment has a negative relationship with CC while financial development, economic growth, export volume and government subsidies positively determine the innovation level.

Practical implications

Based on empirical analysis, it is suggested that the policy officials should do more focus on CC to enhance the competitiveness of the country through more innovation.

Originality/value

The empirical analysis robust the findings of existing literature in an alternative data set and offers innovative views regarding the role of other factors in boosting the innovation level.

Abstract

Purpose

The principal objective of this current research is to explore and test an underlying mechanism to solve the inconsistent relationship between supervisors’ developmental feedback and employee creativity. This study also tests the moderating role of absorptive capacity in fully understanding the relationship between two constructs.

Design/methodology/approach

A time-lagged survey was utilized to collect data from 317 employees working at information technology (IT) organizations in Vietnam. This research conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to examine the hypotheses.

Findings

This research found that employees’ operational skills fully mediated the link between supervisors’ developmental feedback and employees’ creative performance. Moreover, absorptive capacity positively moderated the relationship between supervisors’ developmental feedback and employees’ operational skills as well as the relationship between employees’ operational skills and employee creativity.

Originality/value

This research is one of the first papers to discuss the mediating role of employees’ operational skills in associating supervisors’ developmental feedback with employee creativity in response to the calls of previous studies. To fully comprehend the indirect impact of supervisors' developmental feedback on workers' creative performance, this research also examines the moderating influence of absorptive capacity at the individual level.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to test the first and second-stage moderating effects of tourists’ past travel experiences on the relationships between national responses, destination trust and tourists’ willingness to pay in the post-pandemic recovery era.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model was tested with a sample of 398 tourists in Vietnam. The path analysis was applied to investigate the mediating and moderating effects.

Findings

The findings emphasise the mediating effect of destination trust in the relationships between national responses and tourists’ willingness to pay. With the moderating effect of past travel experience, all the first-stage indirect effects are significant, but the second-stage indirect effects are significant only at a high level of past travel experience.

Originality/value

This study provides theoretical implications for solving the puzzle about the paradox of trust in the government’s responses in the post-pandemic era. Practical implications for destination marketing organisations in the post-pandemic recovery era are then discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Relationship between firms in a B2B marketing channel is often complex in nature. In emerging markets, there is a dramatic shift from traditional state-owned channels to a more market-oriented channel. Acquiring knowledge and expertise from channel firms is an important issue in these markets. However, the mechanisms to acquire knowledge in B2B marketing channels have been underdetermined in the current literature of B2B marketing channels. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between rational influence tactics and knowledge acquisition, with the mediating role of long-term relationship and the moderating role of helping behavior in the specific context of B2B marketing channels in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling is used to analyze a three-way time-lagged sample data of 530 questionnaires collected from purchase managers in Vietnam.

Findings

Results indicate that rational influence tactics, including information exchange and recommendations, have a positive influence on knowledge acquisition. In addition, long-term relationship positively mediates the relationship between information exchange tactic and knowledge acquisition and that between recommendations tactic and knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, helping behavior positively moderates the relationship between long-term relationship and knowledge acquisition.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the current literature of B2B marketing channels by proposing and testing a unique model that explains the relationship between rational influence tactics and knowledge acquisition, with the mediating role of long-term relationship and the moderating role of helping behavior. Findings of this study provide implications for academic researchers and business managers in using rational influence tactics to build long-term relationship and acquire knowledge from business partners in B2B marketing channels.

Abstract

Purpose

High-speed turnouts are more complex in structure and thus may cause abnormal vibration of high-speed train car body, affecting driving safety and passenger riding experience. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the data characteristics of continuous hunting of high-speed trains passing through turnouts and propose a diagnostic method for engineering applications.

Design/methodology/approach

First, Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) is performed to determine the first characteristic component of the car body’s lateral acceleration. Then, the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is performed to calculate the marginal spectra. Finally, the presence of a continuous hunting problem is determined based on the results of the comparison calculations and diagnostic thresholds. To improve computational efficiency, permutation entropy (PE) is used as a fast indicator to identify turnouts with potential problems.

Findings

Under continuous hunting conditions, the PE is less than 0.90; the ratio of the maximum peak value of the signal component to the original signal peak value exceeded 0.7, and there is an energy band in the STFT time-frequency map, which corresponds to a frequency distribution range of 1–2 Hz.

Originality/value

The research results have revealed the lateral vibration characteristics of the high-speed train’s car body during continuous hunting when passing through turnouts. On this basis, an effective diagnostic method has been proposed. With a focus on practical engineering applications, a rapid screening index for identifying potential issues has been proposed, significantly enhancing the efficiency of diagnostic processes.

This study aims to examine the relationship between audit partner tenure and earnings management of companies listed on Vietnamese stock exchanges.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between audit partner tenure and earnings management of companies listed on Vietnamese stock exchanges.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample of 1,363 observations from 2016 to 2019. This study manually collects data on audit partner tenure. Using Datastream financial data, this study calculates abnormal accruals using the modified-Jones models (Jones, 1991; Dechow et al., 1995; Kothari et al., 2005), which are used as the proxy for earnings management. This study runs Ordinary Least Squares regressions to test this study’s hypothesis.

Findings

The results show that audit partner tenure is positively related to abnormal accruals. Cross-sectional analyses indicate that the relationship between audit partner tenure and abnormal accruals is more pronounced for firms that are audited by non-Big Four auditors and for firms that have chief executive officer-chairperson duality, suggesting that weak corporate governance is a channel for the established relationship. The evidence also shows that audit partner tenure is negatively associated with the magnitude of income-decreasing accruals but has no relationship with income-increasing accruals. This study’s findings are robust for several tests, including using the propensity score matching approach.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to provide evidence of the relationship between audit partner tenure and earnings management in Vietnam.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the Sociometer Theory, this study aims to develop a comprehensive framework explaining how and when negative workplace gossip triggers distinct responses, including employee silence and compulsory citizenship behavior (CCB).

Design/methodology/approach

Two scenario-based experiments and a field survey were conducted to examine hypotheses. Study 1 (N = 149) manipulated workplace negative gossip and assessed the mediating effects of state self-esteem. Study 2 (N = 217) manipulated workplace negative gossip and consideration of future consequences (CFC) to verify the stability of the mediating mechanism and test the moderating effect of CFC. Study 3 (N = 321) tested the whole research model.

Findings

The findings indicate that negative workplace gossip decreases state self-esteem, resulting in silence among employees with low levels of CFC, while inducing CCB through state self-esteem among employees with high levels of CFC.

Originality/value

This study not only extends the research of negative workplace gossip by exploring its multifaceted impact on employee responses but also highlights the role of personality traits in shaping individuals’ response strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

The outdoor event market was devastated during the COVID-19 pandemic because of social distancing measures. Therefore, this study aimed to explore stereotyped tendencies and behavioral intentions associated with the prosocial and sustainable practices of outdoor event participants to assess shifts in industry paradigms.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopted structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to relatively examine sequential and combined effects of cognitive (knowledge of COVID-19, awareness of consequences, ascribed responsibility and perceived threat of COVID-19), affective (positive and negative anticipated emotions) and normative drivers (social and moral norms) on intention to practice social distancing requirements. The impact of cultural differences was further explored by comparing attendees from China and USA.

Findings

The SEM results showed that most cognitive drivers significantly affected affective drivers and normative drivers, leading to the intention to practice social distancing requirements. In addition, China and the USA showed significant differences on six paths including the path from moral norm to intention to practice social distancing requirements. Further, fsQCA results revealed the important combination of the factors that affects social distancing intention.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides meaningful theoretical and practical implications for outdoor events scholars and managers. The research suggests a changing direction in event studies and shares ideas on how to manage and make outdoor events a new success after the pandemic.

Originality/value

This is the first study to adopt a mixed method of SEM and fsQCA attempt to explore the driving forces of outdoor participants’ pro-social behavior from cognitive, affective and normative perspectives.

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of virtual tours on the engagement and travel intentions of older adults, emphasizing the role of emotional and informative content. It aims to enhance travel confidence and reduce stress among older travelers, fostering inclusive tourism through advanced avatar technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Using two between-subjects experiments, this research compares the effects of emotion-driven and knowledge-centric virtual tours on older adults. It explores the mediating role of travel confidence and stress reduction, along with the moderating influence of positive psychological cues on engagement and travel intentions.

Findings

The results highlight the potential of technology in promoting inclusive tourism. Emotionally engaging virtual tours significantly increase travel intentions among older adults by boosting confidence and alleviating stress, with positive psychological cues enhancing these effects.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights for tourism industry stakeholders by suggesting the development of avatar-based virtual tours tailored to the emotional and cognitive needs of older travelers. This approach could create more accessible and satisfying tourism experiences for older travelers.

Originality/value

This study extends the socioemotional selectivity theory to the realm of metaverse travel, providing a novel perspective on the emotional and cognitive engagement of older adults in the metaverse. This underscores the importance of inclusive technology in addressing the needs of older travelers.

Abstract

Purpose

Following the job demands-resources theory, this study aims to investigate the role of female managers in enhancing employee well-being in terms of psychological health via workplace resources.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a large-scale job stress survey of approximately 96,000 employee-year observations ranging from 2017 to 2019, this study applies structural equation modeling to construct latent workplace resources at the task, group and worksite levels and then examines the impact of female managers on employee well-being, including occupational stress, job satisfaction, work engagement and workplace cohesiveness.

Findings

The findings provide supporting evidence for the transformational leadership behaviors of female managers. The presence of women in management is associated with improved workplace resources and employee well-being, particularly workplace cohesiveness, work engagement and reduced occupational stress. These relationships are significantly mediated by workplace resources, which elucidates the underlying mechanisms involved. Notably, the positive indirect effects via workplace resources could counteract the negative direct effects of female managers. Compared with top managers, female middle managers have more substantial impacts.

Practical implications

In practice, it is recommended to promote female representation at the management level and strengthen policies that support female middle managers to ensure favorable effects on workplace resources. In a gender-diverse management team, it is important to share female managers’ experiences in improving employee psychological well-being.

Originality/value

This study provides new empirical evidence to support the transformational leadership behaviors of female managers and elucidates the mechanism of female managers’ influence on employee well-being by introducing workplace resources as mediators.
