Abstract

Purpose

Our study aimed to verify the role of the digital economy in economic growth in Egypt and the availability of the technological capabilities of the business sector for digital transformation, based on the negative impact of the epidemic on all economic sectors in the world in general and Egypt in particular.

Design/methodology/approach

This was verified based on the standard Error correction package modeling (VECM) study and analysis using Xlstat 2023 and EViews 10.

Findings

The results of the study conducted during the period (1996–2022) showed that there is a co-integration relationship in the short and long term between the impact of the digital economy and economic growth. We found a positive, statistically significant relationship between the variables of mobile phone subscriptions and Internet use that had a strong positive effect. At the same time, trade openness hurt economic growth in the short term. In the long run, both mobile phone subscriptions and trade openness had a significant positive effect, and the speed of adjustment toward equilibrium was very severe, estimated at 4.7 years (1/0.21).

Research limitations/implications

The work is limited to the economies of Egypt, which is part of Africa. We suggest conducting further research on evidence from other emerging and developed economies.

Practical implications

The results are of great importance to policymakers in Egypt as an African country, as the estimation results were positive between the digital economy and economic growth in the Egyptian economy, and this is consistent with the endogenous growth model of economic growth, which assumes that knowledge is the main driver of economic growth.

Social implications

The paper documents the importance of the digital economy in boosting economic growth, which impacts social life more than the traditional digital economy, especially in times of crisis.

Originality/value

Based on the existing literature, this paper identified various research gaps. First, no consensus has been reached on the concept of the digital economy, and its index system is inadequate. While existing literature concentrates on examining the influence of ICT on economic development in terms of the number of Internet users, fixed broadband Internet users and mobile subscribers. These measures cannot adequately capture the broader implications of the digital economy. Furthermore, research has largely investigated the significance of digitalization in economic development and reached ambiguous conclusions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of customers' environmental concern on corporate green innovation and its underlying mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

This study empirically examines the impact of customer environmental concern on corporate green innovation using 967 company-customer-year observations of Chinese A-share listed companies over the period 2012–2022.

Findings

The empirical results show that customer environmental concern significantly enhances corporate green innovation. Furthermore, executive environmental awareness and research and development (R&D) investment play a partial mediating role in this relationship. The heterogeneity analysis reveals that state-owned customers, customers located in the same province with the corporate and the intellectual property model cities contribute to strengthening this relationship. Moreover, corporate performance analysis shows that customer environmental concern can significantly increase corporate financial performance and sustainable performance.

Originality/value

This study innovatively proposes a measure of customer environmental concern and examines its impact on corporate green innovation and its underlying mechanisms. In addition, this study also proposes some insights for policymakers.

Abstract

Purpose

A binary-tree subdivision method (BTSM) for numerical evaluation of weakly singular integrals with discontinuous kernel in the three-dimensional (3D) boundary element method (BEM) is presented in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

In this method, the singular boundary element is split into two sub-elements and subdivided recursively until the termination criterion is met and the subdivision is stopped. Then, the source point is surrounded by one or more spherical cavities determined by the discontinuous kernel function. The sub-elements located in spherical cavities will be eliminated, and the regular triangular or rectangle elements are employed to fill the spherical cavities.

Findings

With the proposed method, the obtained sub-elements are automatically refined as they approach the source point, and they are “good” in shape and size for standard Gaussian quadrature. Thus, the proposed method can be used to evaluate singular integrals owing discontinuous kernel function accurately for cases of different element shapes and various source point locations.

Originality/value

Numerical examples show that the BTSM is suitable for planar and curved elements of arbitrary regular or irregular shape at various source point locations, and the results have much better accuracy and robustness than conventional subdivision method (CSM) when the kernel function is discontinuous.

Abstract

Purpose

The host–guest molecules are often used in various fields and applications. This paper aims to discuss the role of host–guest complexes in the textile industry, focusing on calixarenes as a potential adsorbent for hazardous dyes. The paper begins with an introduction to nanotechnology and its many uses, including textiles.

Design/methodology/approach

The risks associated with the utilisation of dyes and its adverse effects on the environment are then also highlighted. This paper also discusses the structure and characteristics of calixarenes and their potential use as an adsorbent to extract toxic metals from aqueous solutions. The paper also explains the molecular structure of calixarenes, especially the ability of its upper and lower rims, which can be altered to yield derivatives with various selectivities for diverse guest ions and small molecules. In addition, the application of various host–guest molecules in the textiles industry to extract dyes also had been discussed.

Findings

In conclusion, the paper highlights the essential in establishing a systematic review on the significance of selective adsorbents, such as calixarenes, to isolate particular targets from diverse matrices in the textile industry.

Research limitations/implications

Only discussing several applications for several host–guest molecules.

Originality/value

The paper concisely describes various host–guest molecule applications in the textile industry, with each molecule being elaborated upon in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the roles of Zhongyong and political efficacy on citizens’ intention to use digital government platforms for e-participation (i.e. e-participation intention). Zhongyong is a dialectical way of thinking that influences Chinese behavioral intentions and approaches. Political efficacy is a predictor of traditional political participation. Both of them have not been adequately investigated in this digital era, particularly regarding e-participation in digital government platforms. Therefore, this study investigates their relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative model is constructed to examine the relationship between Zhongyong and citizens’ e-participation intention (internal and external) political efficacy serves as a mediator. An online questionnaire gathered 345 responses from three representative provinces of China (i.e. Guangdong, Jiangxi and Shanxi). Partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was adopted and executed with Smart PLS 4.0 to analyze the data.

Findings

Zhongyong and (internal and external) political efficacy can positively influence citizens’ e-participation intention. Moreover, (internal and external) political efficacy mediates the relationship between Zhongyong and citizens’ e-participation intention.

Research limitations/implications

This research focuses on Chinese culture Zhongyong and surveyed Chinese citizens, thus is limited to the Chinese context. Second, this study used cross-sectional data. Third, this study only investigated two factors’ effects on e-participation, i.e. Zhongyong and political efficacy.

Practical implications

The findings provide multifaceted strategies for improving citizens’ adoption of digital government platforms for e-participation. Incentive policies to boost citizens’ (internal and external) political efficacy can be launched. To achieve broader citizen participation, a participative culture can be cultivated based on Zhongyong.

Originality/value

This study constructs a novel model that innovatively links Zhongyong thinking, political efficacy and e-participation intention. The results underscore the importance of Zhongyong culture and political efficacy in increasing citizens’ e-participation intention.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the impact of the new ambient air quality standards (AAQS) on firm innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking listed companies from 2009 to 2014 as the research object, the authors focus on the quasinatural experiment of the pilot policy of the new AAQS and apply the time-varying difference-in-differences (DID) method to conduct the empirical test.

Findings

The authors find that the new AAQS has a negative effect on firm innovation, and this negative impact may be caused by the increased environmental expenditures following the implementation of the new AAQS. Furthermore, the authors find that firm profitability and state ownership weaken this negative effect, but the effect of the degree of industrial pollution is statistically insignificant.

Originality/value

The study is an initial effort to explore the causal effect of the new AAQS on firm innovation. This study enriches the literature on the impact of environmental regulations on firm innovation and provides some reference value for the formulation of environmental regulation policies in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of corporate governance on the speed of adjustment (SOA) of capital structure in a developing market, Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The study's sample includes 173 non-financial enterprises that were listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) between 2011 and 2020. The capital structure of the sample companies is determined by the ratio of total debt to total debt plus the market value of equity. Corporate governance is measured by board size, independence, CEO duality, management ownership, blockholders ownership and institutional ownership. A two-step difference GMM model was used to achieve the study's objectives.

Findings

Through applying the reduced form model approach, we discovered that corporate governance variables have a considerable negative impact on the speed of targeted leverage adjustment in sample firms. Additionally, to check the robustness of results, the two-stage technique used to examine this corporate governance-SOA relationship. Furthermore, we discovered that smaller enterprises modify their capital structure more than larger firms. Furthermore, corporations prioritize short-term debt adjustment above long-term debt adjustment.

Practical implications

The study's findings provide further information to company managers and investors on the relationship between corporate governance quality and the pace of adjustment towards targeted leverage across Pakistani enterprises. Furthermore, this study adds new information from growing countries such as Pakistan to the existing literature, which can help regulatory authorities and policymakers improve the quality of corporate governance. It is commonly known that improving the quality of corporate governance practices improves the firm's capital structure, which benefits all stakeholders.

Originality/value

In the context of developing economies, the academic literature lacks research that examine the impact of corporate governance on dynamic capital structure decisions. This study intends to fill this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

The metaverse offers great potential for creating a new educational environment with unique experiences. Currently, it has been integrated into many stages of education, including classroom study aids, clinical skill interaction and image training simulators, thanks to a new generation of Internet applications. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive systematic review using bibliometric analysis on the metaverse in health education and analyze the trends and patterns of research output within the field.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper conducts bibliometric analysis and follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to ensure a rigorous and transparent review process. Specifically, this article identifies research questions, develops a data-collection strategy and establishes a screening approach that includes determining relevant keywords and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Findings

A bibliometric analysis is conducted comprising 231 studies from 145 scientific journals to assess the trends, patterns and collaboration networks in research on the use of metaverse technology in health education. This paper provides insights into the research themes, publication trends and countries leading in this field, which can guide future research in this field.

Originality/value

The use of metaverse technology in health education has gained momentum in recent years. Despite this interest, comprehensive studies to review and analyze the existing literature on this topic systematically are lacking. In response, this paper provides a systematic review that explores the potential role of the metaverse in health education. By considering the current research, key trends, research hotspots and opportunities for future investigations are identified. The findings not only shed light on the current state of research but also offer guidance for advancing this exciting field.

Abstract

Purpose

Leadership is crucial for promoting employees’ environmental behaviour, essential for implementing sustainability initiatives. Academics and practitioners emphasize the need for integrated top-to-bottom actions to address environmental issues effectively. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate how Environment-Specific Servant Leadership (ESSL), via Employee Green Value (EGV), promotes Green Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (GOCB).

Design/methodology/approach

The present study adopted a quantitative cross-sectional approach. Additionally, a total of 333 data points were collected from employees working in various hospitals in Ranchi, India. The data and hypothesized relationships were analysed using PLS-SEM with SmartPLS 4.0 software.

Findings

The present results indicate that ESSL has a notable direct effect on employees’ GOCB. Moreover, EGV was identified as a partial mediator in the relationship between ESSL and GOCB.

Practical implications

The findings imply that leaders who prioritize sustainability and exhibit environmentally responsible behaviour, along with employees who value and prioritize green initiatives, can create a workplace that value pro-environmental practices. In this workplace employees are also likely to demonstrate green organizational citizenship behaviour, therefore promoting sustainable practices and outcomes.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable insight into the individual psychological mechanisms that drive voluntary participation in environmental protection and conservation efforts. Furthermore, the study also highlighted the relationship between ESSL, EGV and GOCB in terms of their work environment as well as highlighting the potential for organizations to create a more sustainable and socially responsible workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

Optimization of FDM process parameters has emerged as a major step toward mitigating the issue of reduced mechanical strength of fused deposition modeling (FDM) products. This study aims to evaluate the impact of process parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed fabric yarns of three different materials, namely, polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG), nylon and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).

Design/methodology/approach

2/1 Twill fabric samples with variations of extrusion temperatures and printing profiles are produced, and the individual yarns, manually separated from the fabric samples, are tested for tensile strength, modulus, strain and energy at maximum force. The tensile test results are further subjected to statistical analysis with MINITAB software to detect the standard level of influence of each parameter and evaluate their significance.

Findings

Both extrusion temperature and printing profile, along with their interaction, are significantly important parameters for the mechanical behavior of PETG. However, for nylon and TPU, the influence of a few parameters is found to be insignificant. For all variations of fabric yarns, relatively lower extrusion temperature is concluded to be preferable for better mechanical properties.

Originality/value

This research is new and original. It provides knowledge about how FDM process parameters influence the mechanical behavior of fabrics. It also identifies the optimum process parameters for the best performance of the final product. This article can be a foundation for further parametric analysis of 3D-printed fabric. No artificial intelligence or similar software was used in the preparation of this manuscript.
