Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address the challenge of the real-time state of charge (SOC) estimation for lithium-ion batteries in robotic systems, which is critical for monitoring remaining battery power, planning task execution, conserving energy and extending battery lifespan.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors introduced an optimal observer based on adaptive dynamic programming for online SOC estimation, leveraging a second-order resistor–capacitor model for the battery. The model parameters were determined by fitting an exponential function to the voltage response from pulse current discharges, and the observer's effectiveness was verified through extensive experimentation.

Findings

The proposed optimal observer demonstrated significant improvements in SOC estimation accuracy, robustness and real-time performance, outperforming traditional methods by minimizing estimation errors and eliminating the need for iterative steps in the adaptive critic and actor updates.

Originality/value

This study contributes a novel approach to SOC estimation using an optimal observer that optimizes the observer design by minimizing estimation errors. This method enhances the robustness of SOC estimation against observation errors and uncertainties in battery behavior, representing a significant advancement in battery management technology for robotic applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide data references for deposit cleaning, fuel formulation and lubricant formulation.

Design/methodology/approach

The engine disassembly procedure was carried out based on the IO540 operation manual part number 60297-10-1-7 document. Except for the normal disassembly and assembly of the engine and the measurement of parts, the main test contents included break-in run operation, cylinder pressure test, oil consumption run, pretest calibration run, post-test calibration test and the most critical endurance test. The Lycoming IO-540-V4V5 engine and the customized Hartzell CK319 propeller were selected for the test run.

Findings

The deposits were mainly composed of C, O, B, Al, Br and Pb, which were mainly sourced from fuel, lubricating oil and body materials. XPS analysis showed that the presence of O determined the richness of the deposit components, giving the deposit structure with organic and inorganic components.

Originality/value

This work provides certain data support and reference for subsequent aircraft maintenance, fuel formula and lubricating oil formula. The long-term stability and safety of the aircraft run can be ensured through continuous research, improvement and optimizing the operating of the engine.

The purpose of this paper is to study the anodic dissolution processes of alloy 690 in NaCl + Na2S2O3 solutions by using digital holography.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the anodic dissolution processes of alloy 690 in NaCl + Na2S2O3 solutions by using digital holography.

Design/methodology/approach

The digital holography technique was used to in situ observe the dynamic processes occurring at the electrode|electrolyte interface during the anodic dissolution of alloy 690 in NaCl + Na2S2O3 solutions, both in the presence and absence of a magnetic field (MF).

Findings

In 3.5% NaCl + 0.01 M Na2S2O3 solutions, MF inhibited intergranular corrosion (IGC) because it increased the defects in the oxide film and facilitated the uniform adsorption of low concentration of S on these defects due to its stirring effects, which resulted in a weakened adsorption of S at the grain boundaries. Conversely, in 3.5% NaCl + 0.1 M Na2S2O3 solutions, MF promoted IGC by increasing the number of defects in the oxide film, with lots of S species preferentially adsorbing at the grain boundaries. The resultant salt films formed more readily, inhibiting the formation of the oxide film at the grain boundaries.

Originality/value

Through the use of digital holography, it was possible to in situ observe the initiation of IGC at a single grain boundary and its progression to adjacent grain boundaries, regardless of the presence or absence of MF.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine different paths to overcoming the liability of foreignness. Based on the eclectic paradigm, the authors construct a theoretical framework comprising enterprise nature, location choice, entry mode and internationalization strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method to test the framework with data covering 120 multinational Chinese subsidiaries in 34 host in 2019.

Findings

The results show that liability of foreignness (LOF) is multiple concurrency, equifinality and asymmetry. When investing in Belt and Road (B&R) countries, non-SEOs can weaken LOF by applying the greenfield mode and resource-seeking strategy, other MNEs can implement a market- or resource-seeking strategy via cross-border M&A to reduce LOF. But when investing in non-B&R countries with a strategic asset-seeking strategy, the LOF is increased. The B&R initiative can reduce the LOF effectively.

Originality/value

The authors construct a general framework to explain the paths of overcoming LOF by bridging the OLI with LOF and introduce fsQCA method into the field of LOF to make up for the shortcoming of existing test method by explaining the influence of more than three factors on LOF.

Abstract

Community-based tourism (CBT) is a management model that prioritises the sustainable use of natural resources while valuing local history and culture in the tourism entrepreneurship business. It has received attention from academics and society worldwide due to its potential to contribute to sustainability frameworks but has some gaps and challenges that need addressing. Studies have highlighted weaknesses in projects, risks of losing community essence through partnerships with the tourism industry and a lack of preparation for community governance. This chapter presents findings from bibliometric studies of publications on CBT and its impact on sustainable regional development indexed by Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus databases over 5 years (2018–2022). The study uses Lotka and Bradford's Laws to review the frequency of citations, the experience and background of cited authors, main subjects, concerns and the most used methodological design. The findings revealed three major concern areas: sustainable development, CBT and the development of tourism. These clusters were further categorised into four subcategories: community participation, sustainability, sustainable tourism and governance. The research papers were published in high-impact factor journals, indicating their relevance and significance in the scientific community. Qualitative results suggest CBT is closely linked to local development issues. There remain challenges that need to be addressed, including the need to associate economic, social and cultural aspects with sustainability issues. It is also essential to improve participation of the local community in governance aspects and expand communication and public policies to motivate and ensure the success of CBT.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present an innovative reconfigurable series-fed microstrip antenna using radiofrequency positive intrinsic negative (RF PIN) diodes for cognitive S-band and C-band satellite communications. The antenna can dynamically reconfigure its frequency, polarization and radiation pattern to meet diverse application needs.

Design/methodology/approach

The design involves a reconfigurable four-element microstrip antenna using FR4 substrate and copper patches. RF PIN diodes enable dynamic frequency, polarization and radiation pattern reconfiguration. Simulations and optimizations are performed using CST and HFSS, using techniques like the Nelder-Mead algorithm, particle swarm optimization, covariance matrix adaptation and trust region framework. An antenna prototype is also fabricated to validate the simulations.

Findings

The proposed antenna demonstrates significant reconfigurability: it switches between S-band (2.45 GHz, 2.52 GHz) and C-band (5.55 GHz, 5.59 GHz) with bandwidths of 120 MHz and 550 MHz, respectively. It transitions between circular and linear polarization in the S-band and modifies the radiation pattern by 45 degrees, providing an alternative radiation direction in the C-band. The antenna achieves a maximum gain of 5.95 dBi at 2.52 GHz and 93% efficiency at 5.55 GHz. Simulated results closely match those from the fabricated prototype, confirming the design’s validity.

Originality/value

The innovative use of RF PIN diodes enables comprehensive reconfigurability in frequency, polarization and radiation patterns within a single microstrip antenna, meeting the demands of S-band and C-band satellite communications. This study demonstrates superior performance, significant gains and efficiencies across various reconfiguration modes, validated by rigorous simulation and practical fabrication. The simple structural design further distinguishes this study from others in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

Scientific impact is traditionally assessed with citation-based metrics. Recently, altmetric indices have been introduced to measure scientific impact both within academia and among the general public. However, little research has investigated the association between the linguistic features of research article titles and received online attention. To address this issue, the authors examined in the present study the relationship between a series of title features and altmetric attention scores.

Design/methodology/approach

The data included 8,658 titles of Science articles. The authors extracted six features from the title corpus (i.e. mean word length, lexical sophistication, lexical density, title length, syntactic dependency length and sentiment score). The authors performed Spearman’s rank analyses to analyze the correlations between these features and online impact. The authors then conducted a stepwise backward multiple regression to identify predictors for the articles' online impact.

Findings

The correlation analyses revealed weak but significant correlations between all six title features and the altmetric attention scores. The regression analysis showed that four linguistic features of titles (mean word length, lexical sophistication, title length and sentiment score) have modest predictive effects on the online impact of research articles.

Originality/value

In the internet era with the widespread use of social media and online platforms, it is becoming increasingly important for researchers to adapt to the changing context of research evaluation. This study identifies several linguistic features that deserve scholars’ attention in the writing of article titles. It also has practical implications for academic administrators and pedagogical implications for instructors of academic writing courses.

Abstract

Purpose

Using Chinese A-share listed firms between 2007 and 2020 with 21,380 observations, we aim to examine the impact of cross-ownership on firms’ innovation output and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the influence of cross-ownership on firms’ innovation output, this paper constructs an ordinary least square regression model. The explained variables are firms’ innovation output, including the total number of patent applications (Apply) and the number of invention patent applications (Apply_I). Considering the long period of patent R&D, we take the value of the explained variables in the following year for regression. Cross-ownership (Cross) is the explanatory variable; Control is the control variable; and ε is the regression residual term.

Findings

We find that cross-ownership significantly promotes corporate innovation output, indicating that cross-owners play an important role in “collaborative governance.” This finding remains unchanged after conducting a series of robustness tests. We also find that cross-ownership contributes to innovation output mainly through two plausible channels: the relaxation of financing constraints and reducing both types of agency costs. Further analysis shows that cross-ownership has a more pronounced influence on innovation output in those firms with higher equity restriction ratios and facing more competitive markets. Moreover, cross-ownership has a profound impact on firms’ innovation quality and innovation efficiency, thereby increasing firm value.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides important policy implications. First, cross-owners should actively play their resource and supervision advantages to improve firms’ long-term development capability through the “collaborative governance” effect. Second, listed companies in China should be fully aware of the value of the cross-ownership and use the cross-ownership as a bridge to strengthen the cooperative relationship with firms in the same portfolio. Meanwhile, they need to pay attention to cross-ownership’s “collaborative governance” effect to provide an impetus for the healthy development of enterprises. Finally, government regulators should maintain appropriate supervision of the cross-ownership linkage in the market.

Originality/value

Our findings show that cross-ownership significantly contributes to firms’ innovation output, indicating that cross-owners play the role of “collaborative governance.” While paying attention to the collusion effect of the cross-ownership, they shall not ignore its governance effect, for example, the promotion effect on the innovation level. Government regulators should appropriately supervise the cross-ownership linkage, which is conducive to maintaining the market order and driving the healthy development of the capital market.
