Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the transformative potential of digital twins (DTs) in the construction industry by addressing challenges and bridging the technology adoption gap. Focusing on construction offices, on-site environments and their interface, the research identifies key success factors for DT implementation. Emphasizing practical applications, the study foresees a substantial impact on project management, highlighting the pivotal role of DTs in reshaping the construction sector.

Design/methodology/approach

We reviewed 30 variables within the DT literature, classifying investigations into three main domains: on-site environments, office environments and site-office interface in construction projects. We employed a questionnaire to examine variables, with collected data analyzed using SmartPLS version 4 software. Confirmatory analysis and structural equation modeling rigorously assessed the model’s reliability, validity and predictive utility.

Findings

The study identifies 11 critical factors crucial for successfully implementing DTs in construction projects, emphasizing contributions from office-related (ORF), site-related (SRF) and office-site-related factors (OSRF). Notably, impactful contributions from ORF affirm its pivotal role. The research sheds light on specific aspects within construction offices, on-site environments and their interface, providing valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers and researchers.

Originality/value

Despite discussions on DT’s potential, a research gap exists in addressing essential factors for its effective application in monitoring and optimizing construction projects throughout their lifecycle. This study fills this gap by identifying and categorizing these factors, enhancing the knowledge base for successful DT assimilation and emphasizing the need for practitioners to understand key factors crucial for its integration into construction processes.

Abstract

Purpose

Building defects are becoming recurrent phenomena in most high-rise buildings. However, little research exists on the analysis of defects in high-rise buildings based on data from real-life projects. This study aims to develop dashboards and models for revealing the most common locations of defects, understanding associations among defects and predicting the rectification periods.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 15,484 defect reports comprising qualitative and quantitative data were obtained from a company that provides consulting services for the construction industry in Victoria, Australia. Data mining methods were applied using a wide range of Python libraries including NumPy, Pandas, Natural Language Toolkit, SpaCy and Regular Expression, alongside association rule mining (ARM) and simulations.

Findings

Findings reveal that defects in multi-storey buildings often occur on lower levels, rather than on higher levels. Joinery defects were found to be the most recurrent problem on ground floors. The ARM outcomes show that the occurrence of one type of defect can be taken as an indication for the existence of other types of defects. For instance, in laundry, the chance of occurrence of plumbing and joinery defects, where paint defects are observed, is 88%. The stochastic model built for door defects showed that there is a 60% chance that defects on doors can be rectified within 60 days.

Originality/value

The dashboards provide original insight and novel ideas regarding the frequency of defects in various positions in multi-storey buildings. The stochastic models can provide a reliable point of reference for property managers, occupants and sub-contractors for taking measures to avoid reoccurring defects; so too, findings provide estimations of possible rectification periods for various types of defects.

Abstract

Purpose

Tacit and explicit knowledge sharing play crucial roles in today’s rapidly changing business environment, particularly in fostering innovation. However, uncovering tacit knowledge sharing remains complex. The purpose of this study is to analyze the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge in the relationship between a knowledge-sharing culture and organizational creativity.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors developed an extended analytical process to analyze the impact of explicit and tacit knowledge on a knowledge-sharing culture and organizational creativity. This process combines two analytical techniques: necessary condition analysis (NCA) and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). NCA identifies essential bottlenecks for a specific outcome, while PLS-SEM uncovers strong connections between predictor and outcome variables. The authors applied these analyses to a sample of 155 IT experts from a leading telecom company in the Turkish ICT industry to test the relevant hypotheses.

Findings

The findings of this study indicate that tacit knowledge, rather than explicit knowledge, partially mediates the relationship between a knowledge-sharing culture and organizational creativity. This mediating role of tacit knowledge is particularly pronounced in the ICT sector. Additionally, the impact of organizational capabilities on organizational creativity is amplified by higher levels of tacit knowledge sharing.

Originality/value

The effect of organizational capabilities on organizational creativity was found to increase because of tacit knowledge sharing compared to explicit knowledge sharing, depending on the knowledge-sharing climate.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how specific regulatory indicators – such as regulatory quality, information and communications technology regulatory environment, regulation of emerging technologies, e-commerce legislation and privacy protection by law content – affect the economic outcomes, quality of life and sustainable development goals associated with future technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, big data analytics, cloud computing and app- and web-enabled markets.

Design/methodology/approach

Using Bayesian Belief Network models and Network Readiness Index 2023 data from 134 countries, this study explores the relationships between regulatory factors and various socioeconomic outcomes.

Findings

Regulatory quality and e-commerce legislation emerge as central determinants, directly or indirectly impacting economic development, societal well-being and sustainability objectives. Notably, regulatory quality is identified as a pivotal factor across all outcomes, emphasizing the critical role of effective regulatory frameworks in fostering positive outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The study relies on cross-sectional data, which restricts causal inference, and focuses on national-level data, potentially overlooking subnational variations. In addition, the use of secondary data sources introduces possible measurement errors and biases. Despite these constraints, the study offers valuable insights into regulatory strategies and their role in advancing economic and social outcomes.

Originality/value

The study highlights the importance of tailoring regulatory interventions to address specific needs and challenges faced by countries at different stages of development. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, regulatory authorities and stakeholders seeking to navigate the regulatory challenges and opportunities inherent in the era of rapid technological advancement. The study contributes to advancing the understanding of the complex interplay between regulation, technology and development outcomes in the contemporary global landscape.

Abstract

Purpose

In the turbulence of a business-to-business (B2B) environment, employees often face role conflict as the result of changes in task allocations due to work requirements. This research uses organizational role theory to investigate the impact of role conflict on active lurking in B2B online communities. Active lurking, defined as the behavior of seeking information and acquiring knowledge without contributing, contrasts with posters who actively share knowledge. By focusing on these dynamics, this study aims to deepen the understanding of knowledge management (KM) practices and behaviors within B2B contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

This research conducts two experimental studies with a behavioral outcome to examine the impact of role conflict on active lurking and the mediating role of knowledge self-efficacy in this regard.

Findings

The results also indicate the moderating role of transformational leadership, such that when transformational leadership is low, role conflict decreases knowledge self-efficacy and active lurking. In contrast, this effect is attenuated in a high transformational leadership environment. The findings contribute to the KM literature by demonstrating how role conflict influences knowledge-sharing behaviors in B2B contexts and by capturing active lurking using a behavioral measure.

Practical implications

The implications of this study offer strategies to address role conflict and mitigate its negative impact. By integrating the concepts of posters and lurkers into the research framework, this paper offers a fresh perspective on organizational role conflict and KM. It provides insights into lurkers and active lurking behavior in B2B online communities, thereby extending the KM literature.

Originality/value

The findings of this research are novel as they first show the moderating role of transformational leadership, wherein when transformational leadership is low, role conflict decreases knowledge self-efficacy and active lurking and second it extends the literature on online knowledge sharing in a B2B context by capturing the role of active lurking through a behavioral measure.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to explore and explain sustainable behaviours in an organizational context using self-determination theory, suggesting that individuals are likely to be engaged in green practices when supported by their needs.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used three waves of longitudinal design, consisting of 702 executives in leadership roles across public and private companies with an average of 15–20 years of work experience. Professionals working throughout PAN India, the USA, Germany and Australia provided us with the data.

Findings

Green transformational leaderships play a pivot in fostering optimism in employees when recrafting their work. Employees being encouraged to evaluate their jobs within the organization’s capacity would bring meaningful change and envision a sustainable future. All the study hypotheses were supported, highlighting the importance of green-focused leadership with individual agencies in line with the organization’s green values.

Practical implications

Using sustainable practices advances organizations in providing green commitment through leadership. Implementing this in the organization can help achieve long-term success by ensuring sustainable practices are embedded in culture rather than a peripheral initiative promoting sustainable decision-making and behaviours.

Originality/value

The study provides insights into the factors influencing decisions to maintain and adopt sustainable practices by providing a deeper understanding of green behaviour change and strategies for promoting pro-environmental strategies in organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

As one of the most energy-intensive sectors, the manufacturing industry is strongly affected by current economic, ecological and political issues and is increasingly looking to reduce its energy consumption through effective management. One important component of energy management is monitoring, which can be improved by using the Internet of Things (IoT). This study aims to identify the factors behind the adoption of IoT energy monitoring systems in manufacturing industries and IoT’s impact on consumption in this context. Moreover, this study explores what constitutes successful implementation and develops recommendations on how companies can best use the generated energy-saving potential.

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, an exploratory, inductive research approach is taken in which five semi-structured interviews with IoT energy-monitoring platform providers located in Germany are conducted and additional documents about these platforms are analysed.

Findings

Based on these interviews and documents, this study defines the relevant factors involved in the increased adoption of IoT energy monitoring systems as desired cost reduction, regulatory requirements and customer expectations. Once implemented, a company’s energy efficiency potential strongly depends on its individual situation; however, the transparency characteristic of IoT supports managers in deriving effective energy-saving measures. Additionally, the used efficiency potential is influenced by the level of data collection and organisational capabilities.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, as the first study, this research combines findings from the energy management and IoT research streams and places them into an organisational context. The application of the fit-viability model as an overarching framework enhances the theoretical contributions of this study. Moreover, focusing on Germany and its substantial industrial sector enables the gathering of important insights and the analysis of the specific use case of industrial IoT, which yields new findings for practitioners as well.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to review recent conceptualizations and theories of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and its role in the energy transition from Malaysia’s perspective. It examines how factors of OCB, such as individual values, attitudes, motivations, leadership style, organizational culture and policies, affect the energy transition process. The research findings have implications for future studies on energy transition, highlighting the role of OCB in shaping the country’s strategies, addressing challenges and contributing to the transition process.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducts a narrative review of past literature and documents OCB in the context of energy transition; factors influencing OCB (individual, organizational and external factors); OCB in the context of energy transition; and insights into energy transition in Malaysian organizations.

Findings

This study finds support in the literature for the impact of OCB on energy transition efforts from the Malaysian perspective. OCB, which extends beyond formal role expectations, can significantly support the effective implementation of energy policies and contribute to organizational objectives. By encouraging OCB within organizations, Malaysia can facilitate the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency practices, thereby playing a crucial role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and advancing the energy transition, instilling hope for a more sustainable future.

Originality/value

This study encourages future research to explore the relationship between discussed variables and their impact on OCB, which is crucial for organizational policies aimed at advancing the energy transition in Malaysia. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on OCB within the context of energy transition and provide a foundation for further related research.
