Abstract
Blockchain technology, renowned for its decentralization, security, reliability, and data integrity, has the potential to revolutionize businesses globally. However, its full potential remains unrealized due to adoption barriers, necessitating further studies to address these challenges. Identifying these barriers is crucial for businesses and practitioners to effectively tackle them. This systematic review analyzed 70 eligible studies out of 1944 gathered from various databases to understand and identify common blockchain adoption barriers. The Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) framework was the most popular theory used in these studies. Despite differences in variable definitions, financial constraints, lack of stakeholder collaboration and coordination, and social influences like resistance to change and negative perceptions emerged as the top three barriers. The supply chain domain had the highest number of studies on blockchain adoption. Notably, there was a significant increase in studies addressing blockchain adoption in 2023, comprising 34.2% of the total reviewed studies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of identified barriers, serving as a valuable foundation for future research. Understanding these challenges allows researchers to design targeted studies aimed at developing solutions, strategies, and innovations to overcome obstacles hindering blockchain adoption.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to develop an agile blockchain as a service (aBaaS) framework for construction projects, which will support blockchain design, deployment and operation in a flexible, agile and cost-effective manner.
Design/methodology/approach
This research adopts a design science research method. The aBaaS framework is then substantiated through two case studies pertinent to construction projects.
Findings
It is found to be highly flexible, achieving high completion rates in customizing the design, deployment and visualization of blockchain systems within given periods. Also, the aBaaS framework is highly agile and cost-effective, capable of responding to changes with low person-day units and labor cost.
Research limitations/implications
Limited sub-service components are built in design management as services (DMSs), deployment as services (DESs) and visualization as services (VISs) of aBaaS framework.
Practical implications
This research offers a reference for those aiming to realize the potential of blockchain in construction projects.
Originality/value
Firstly, it introduces a novel, flexible modular-build DMSs method to help system developers design blockchain systems for projects. Secondly, it improves the blockchain deployment methods by offering plug-and-play DESs for projects. Thirdly, it accelerates the visualization processes for blockchain users in projects by offering them flexible, click-to-go and cost-effective VISs.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates how corporations navigate the increasingly prominent field of environmental, social and governance (ESG) through the lens of resource dependence theory (RDT). It aims to elucidate the strategic responses of companies to media-driven public sentiment on ESG, examining the alignment of their operations and competitive strategies – specifically differentiation and cost leadership – to the external resource of media ESG sentiment.
Design/methodology/approach
Employing Python software, this research extracted over two million ESG-related news articles from Baidu News. Using machine learning and text analysis, the study assesses the media ESG sentiment and its correlation with the competitive strategies of China’s A-share listed companies over a period from 2007 to 2022. The approach leverages RDT to understand how firms adjust their strategies in response to media-driven public sentiment on ESG.
Findings
The findings indicate that positive media ESG sentiment acts as a crucial external resource, significantly influencing firms’ strategic alignment toward minimizing ESG public sentiment risks and enhancing competitive positioning, especially in the social (S) and governance (G) domains. This alignment is evident in firms’ adoption of differentiation and cost leadership strategies, affirming the study’s theoretical prediction within the RDT framework.
Originality/value
This paper provides a novel contribution by integrating RDT with the analysis of media-driven ESG sentiment to explore corporate strategic adjustments. It offers empirical evidence on the theory’s applicability in contemporary strategic corporate management, particularly in the context of ESG challenges. The research deepens the understanding of the interplay between media ESG sentiment and corporate strategy, highlighting the strategic importance of positive media sentiment in the ESG landscape.

Purpose
This study provides a comprehensive overview of the research landscape of Kansei engineering (KE) within the domain of emotional clothing design. It explores the pivotal technologies, challenges and potential future directions of KE, offering application methodologies and theoretical underpinnings to support emotional clothing design.
Design/methodology/approach
This study briefly introduces KE, outlining its overarching research methodologies and processes. This framework lays the groundwork for advancing research in clothing Kansei. Subsequently, by reviewing literature from both domestic and international sources, this research initially explores the application of KE in the design and evaluation of clothing products as well as the development of intelligent clothing design systems from the vantage point of designers. Second, it investigates the role of KE in the customization of online clothing recommendation systems and the optimization of retail environments, as perceived by consumers. Finally, with the research methodologies of KE as a focal point, this paper discusses the principal challenges and opportunities currently confronting the field of clothing Kansei research.
Findings
At present, studies in the domain of clothing KE have achieved partial progress, but there are still some challenges to be solved in the concept, technical methods and area of application. In the future, multimodal and multisensory user Kansei acquisition, multidimensional product deconstruction, artificial intelligence (AI) enabling KE research and clothing sales environment Kansei design will become new development trends.
Originality/value
This study provides significant directions and concepts in the technology, methods and application types of KE, which is helpful to better apply KE to emotional clothing design.

Damage of engineering structures is a nonlinear evolutionary process that spans across both material and structural levels, from mesoscale to macroscale. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of damage analysis methods at both the material and structural levels.
Design/methodology/approach
This study provides an overview of multiscale damage analysis of engineering structures, including its definition and significance. Current status of damage analysis at both material and structural levels is investigated, by reviewing damage models and prediction methods from single-scale to multiscale perspectives. The discussion of prediction methods includes both model-based simulation approaches and data-driven techniques, emphasizing their roles and applications. Finally, summarize the main findings and discuss potential future research directions in this field.
Findings
In the material level, damage research primarily focuses on the degradation of material properties at the macroscale using continuum damage mechanics (CDM). In contrast, at the mesoscale, damage research involves analyzing material behavior in the meso-structural domain, focusing on defects like microcracks and void growth. In structural-level damage analysis, the macroscale is typically divided into component and structural scales. The component scale examines damage progression in individual structural elements, such as beams and columns, often using detailed finite element or mesoscale models. The structural scale evaluates the global behavior of the entire structure, typically using simplified models like beam or shell elements.
Originality/value
To achieve realistic simulations, it is essential to include as many mesoscale details as possible. However, this results in significant computational demands. To balance accuracy and efficiency, multiscale methods are employed. These methods are categorized into hierarchical approaches, where different scales are processed sequentially, and concurrent approaches, where multiple scales are solved simultaneously to capture complex interactions across scales.

Abstract
Purpose
Project-based organisations (PBOs) experience high labour turnover due to wellbeing issues arising from inefficient policies. An in-depth review of previous attributes this to the fact that the experiences and perspectives of project managers are considered neither in organisational policy/practice nor in wellbeing research. This study addresses this gap with two questions: (1) How do project managers experience wellbeing practices in PBOs? (2) What factors enable or restrict the implementation of these practices from their perspective?
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory qualitative study collected interview data from 19 PBO employees in Western Europe across three sectors. Participants assessed the implementation and influencing factors of wellbeing practices in their organisations. Narratives were analysed thematically, followed by sentiment analysis to cross-reference the emotional tone of each theme.
Findings
The findings provided a framework showing the necessary shift in the project managers’ role in PBO wellbeing policy and devolution of voice practices. The results also provided two new conceptual themes specific to wellbeing in PBOs: (1) voice structure and policy and (2) demarcation of the project leader role.
Originality/value
The study introduces a new framework with two new theoretical concepts to improve wellbeing in PBOs. These concepts promote inclusivity of wellbeing concerns via new feedback structures and clarify the project manager’s role in advocating employee voice. The proposed solutions aim to improve knowledge in the research field of wellbeing providing the perspective of the project manager, which currently is lacking from theory.

Purpose
This paper aims to provide a full introduction, new classification, comparison and investigation of the challenges as well as applications of layerless 3D printing, which is one of the industry 4.0 pioneers.
Design/methodology/approach
Given the significance and novelty of uniform 3D printing, more than 250 publications were collected and reviewed in an unbiased and clear manner.
Findings
As a result, the majority of uniform parts printed in polymer form are known up to this point. In a novel division for better researchers’ comprehension, uniform printing systems were classified into three categories: oxygen inhibition (OI), liquid lubrication (LL) and photon penetration (PP), and each was thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, these three approaches were evaluated in terms of printing speed, precision and accuracy, manufacturing scale and cost.
Originality/value
The parameters of each approach were compared independently, and then a practical comparison was conducted among these three approaches. Finally, a variety of technologies, opportunities, challenges and advantages of each significant method, as well as a future outlook for layerless rapid prototyping, are presented.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the stock market reaction of the small and medium sectors in the Southeast Asian countries (SEACs), including China, to the Russia–Ukraine war.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses the event study methodology to quantify the magnitude and direction of the impact of the Russia–Ukraine war on the performance of small and medium indices of SEACs. Assuming market efficiency, this study uses the market model to capture abnormal returns on the event date and across the event window.
Findings
The Russia–Ukraine war adversely affected most of the sample countries, with a prolonged impact over the 50-day post-event window. In most cases, the study has failed to establish statistical significance for the results. One major reason for the low impact is the proactive role of the governments of the SEACs in mitigating the war’s impact on their respective economies by providing subsidies, exercising price controls and stockpiling.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to analyze the impact of the Russia–Ukraine war on the small and medium sectors of SEACs, including China. It highlights the importance of geographic proximity and the proportion of bilateral trade in understanding how war and geopolitical tensions affect the stock market performance in other countries in the current global scenario. In addition, this study uses a range of parametric and nonparametric tests that adjust for the cross-country dependence and event-induced volatility to substantiate the statistical significance of the results and this supports the robustness of the results.

Purpose
This paper aims to identify modern construction techniques for affordable housing, such as prefabrication and interlocking systems, that can save time and cost while also providing long-term sustainable benefits that are desperately needed in today's construction industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The need for housing is growing worldwide, but traditional construction cannot cater to the demand due to insufficient time. There should be some paradigm shift in the construction industry to supply housing to society. This paper presented a state-of-the-art review of modern construction techniques practiced worldwide and their advantages in affordable housing construction by conducting a systematic literature review and applying the backward snowball technique. The paper reviews modern prefabrication techniques and interlocking systems such as modular construction, formwork systems, light gauge steel/cold form steel construction and sandwich panel construction, which have been globally well practiced. It was understood from the overview that modular construction, including modular steel construction and precast concrete construction, could reduce time and costs efficiently. Further enhancement in the quality was also noticed. Besides, it was observed that light gauge steel construction is a modern phase of steel that eases construction execution efficiently. Modern formwork systems such as Mivan (Aluminium Formwork) have been reported for their minimum construction time, which leads to faster construction than traditional formwork. However, the cost is subjected to the repetitions of the formwork. An interlocking system is an innovative approach to construction that uses bricks made of sustainable materials such as earth that conserve time and cost.
Findings
The study finds that the prefabrication techniques and interlocking system have a lot of unique attributes that can enable the modern construction sector to flourish. The study summarizes modern construction techniques that can save time and cost, enhancing the sustainability of construction practices, which is the need of the Indian construction industry in particular.
Research limitations/implications
This study is limited to identifying specific modern construction techniques for time and cost savings, lean concepts and sustainability which are being practiced worldwide.
Practical implications
Modern formwork systems such as Mivan (Aluminium Formwork) have been reported for their minimum construction time which leads to faster construction than traditional formwork.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the transformative potential of digital twins (DTs) in the construction industry by addressing challenges and bridging the technology adoption gap. Focusing on construction offices, on-site environments and their interface, the research identifies key success factors for DT implementation. Emphasizing practical applications, the study foresees a substantial impact on project management, highlighting the pivotal role of DTs in reshaping the construction sector.
Design/methodology/approach
We reviewed 30 variables within the DT literature, classifying investigations into three main domains: on-site environments, office environments and site-office interface in construction projects. We employed a questionnaire to examine variables, with collected data analyzed using SmartPLS version 4 software. Confirmatory analysis and structural equation modeling rigorously assessed the model’s reliability, validity and predictive utility.
Findings
The study identifies 11 critical factors crucial for successfully implementing DTs in construction projects, emphasizing contributions from office-related (ORF), site-related (SRF) and office-site-related factors (OSRF). Notably, impactful contributions from ORF affirm its pivotal role. The research sheds light on specific aspects within construction offices, on-site environments and their interface, providing valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers and researchers.
Originality/value
Despite discussions on DT’s potential, a research gap exists in addressing essential factors for its effective application in monitoring and optimizing construction projects throughout their lifecycle. This study fills this gap by identifying and categorizing these factors, enhancing the knowledge base for successful DT assimilation and emphasizing the need for practitioners to understand key factors crucial for its integration into construction processes.
