Abstract

Purpose

The present study explored sickness presenteeism as a linchpin connecting prolonged working hours to elevated turnover intention among hospital nurses (mediation). In addition, we examined the joint moderating effects of organizational health care support and supervisor support on the second stage of the “long working hours-presenteeism-turnover” process (three-way moderated mediation).

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a two-wave survey to collect data over a four-month period from hospital nurses in Taiwan. The final sample for analysis had 294 nurses.

Findings

We found that presenteeism partially mediated the elevated turnover intention after working long hours four months later. We also found a significant three-way moderation effect of organizational health care support and supervisor support on the positive relationship between presenteeism and turnover intention. Specifically, nurses reported the lowest turnover intention with high levels of both organizational healthcare and supervisor support, the highest turnover intention with both support being low, and the intermediate level of turnover intention when any one of the support was high.

Practical implications

Organizations should build a positive work environment through organizational health care support and supervisor support to retain talents.

Originality/value

Our findings suggested that support resources of different origins (organization-level vs line supervisor) can compensate for one another to protect the employees in demanding work conditions. Our moderated mediation model exploring the psychosocial context of presenteeism has theoretical contributions pivoting on the interplay of resources at different levels in the organization as well as practical implications for presenteeism management.

Abstract

Purpose

In the context of severe environmental pollution and resource shortage, this study aims to examine how knowledge flows affect the green activities of firms. Specifically, this paper explored whether the firms’ knowledge flows, namely, knowledge inflow (KIF) and knowledge outflow (KOF), play a moderating role in relationship between corporate environmental responsibility (CER) and green innovation in Chinese high-polluting firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis was carried out based on a panel data set of 305 heavy-polluting Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2020. Meanwhile, this paper adopted the fixed model to empirically attest the proposed hypotheses regarding the relationships among CER, knowledge flows and green innovation.

Findings

The results indicate that there is a U-shaped relationship between CER and green innovation, while the two dimensions of knowledge flows exert opposing effects on the nonlinear link between CER and green innovation. Specifically, KIF positively moderates the effect of CER on green innovation, whereas KOF negatively moderates the effect of CER on green innovation.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates how green innovation can be influenced by CER and, moreover, provides a more nuanced understanding of the value of knowledge management (KM) in firms’ green activities. In this way, this paper answers the call for understanding the importance of green transformation in the context of KM.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology (BCT) has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing transparency and trust. However, the relationship between the benefits of BCT and agri-food supply chain performance (AFSCperf) remains underexplored. Therefore, the current study investigates the influence of BCT on AFSCperf and sustainability issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a comprehensive literature review, various benefits of BCT are identified. Subsequently, a research framework is proposed based on data collected from questionnaire surveys and personal visits to professionals in the agri-food industry. The proposed framework is validated using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The findings reveal that BCT positively impacts AFSCperf by improving traceability, transparency, food safety and quality, immutability and trust. Additionally, BCT adoption enhances stakeholder collaboration, provides a decentralised network, improves data accessibility and yields a better return on investment, resulting in the overall improvement in AFSCperf and socio-economic sustainability.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable practical insights for practitioners and academicians, establishing empirical links between the benefits of BCT and AFSCperf and providing a deeper understanding of BCT adoption.

Originality/value

Stakeholders, managers, policymakers and technology providers can leverage these findings to optimise the benefits of BCT in enhancing AFSCperf. Moreover, it utilises rigorous theoretical and empirical approaches, drawing on a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing food operations and supply chain literature, public policy, information technology, strategy, organisational theory and sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop cause-and-effect relationships among the critical success factors (CSFs) of fintech adoption and rank these CSFs based on their importance in the model.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the objectives of the study, the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (FDEMATEL) approach was used. The data was collected from 16 experts using a questionnaire.

Findings

The findings demonstrated the interrelationships among the CSFs. In total, 16 critical factors were recognized as causal factors, and the remaining eight were considered effect factors. The CSFs were ranked based on their importance in fintech adoption.

Originality/value

This study is novel as it investigates CSFs of fintech adoption using FDEMATEL, and it contributes to understanding the nature of these factors and how they affect fintech adoption. The findings propose a significant basis to deepen fintech adoption and deliver a clue to design a practical framework for fintech adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the existing literature on women’s leadership in academia by identifying the existing challenges for their underrepresentation, and proposing a new-age leadership interventions to address the inherent systemic biases and develop foster an equitable academic climate.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed bibliometric analysis to map the literature by investigating publication and geographical trends. Techniques like citation, co-citation, bibliographic coupling and co-word analysis identified seminal research and emerging themes, providing insights into research developments and facilitating identification of avenues for future research.

Findings

Our study highlights how social, organizational and individual barriers disadvantage women academic leaders. Existing enablers for women in leadership, like mentorship, leadership development and family friendly policies, focus on bringing change within the prevailing academic culture, reinforcing the notion “women need support”, overlooking the influence of systemic barriers. Such interventions are often ineffective in bringing sustainable change. We propose integrating AI/machine learning (ML) technologies in leadership selection to reduce bias arising from subjectivity.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the discourse on gender inequality in academic leadership by offering a robust understanding of the research topic and informing avenues for future research.

Practical implications

Policymakers and higher education institutions can use the findings of the study to aid the formulation of policies, initiatives and institutional procedures to mitigate the prevalent gender bias in academia and cultivate an inclusive culture for growth of women.

Originality/value

The paper analyses women’s under-representation as academic leaders and proposes a novel data-driven intervention using gamification, AI and ML, aiming to reshape gender dynamics in academic leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to investigate the association between environmental reporting (ER) and firm performance and whether board independence plays any role in this relationship in the context of Bangladesh, an emerging economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has used a sample of 289 firm-years derived from the listed manufacturing companies of Bangladesh for the years 2018–2023. To measure ER, content analysis has been performed. Financial performance has been calculated using both accounting-based (ROA, ROE and EPS) and market-based (Tobin’s Q) performance measures. Two-step system generalized method of moments method has been used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The study has found a very low level of ER practice by the sample firms. The regression results show a positive and significant impact of ER on both accounting-based and market-based performance measures. In addition, existence of greater board independence is found to positively affect this relationship between ER and performance.

Practical implications

The findings of the study emphasize the importance of ER in improving performance which will have significant implications for the practitioners. Besides, the importance of greater board independence in enhancing the capability of ER to improve performance will provide valuable insights to the policymakers and regulators.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the role of an effective corporate mechanism, board independence, in improving the relationship between ER and performance in the context of an environmentally sensitive country such as Bangladesh.

Abstract

Purpose

The new era of supply chain management is characterised by key change drivers, e.g. Industry 4.0, and post-COVID-19 VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) business environment, in addition to the rising requirements for sustainability, responsiveness and customer centrism. An important and topical question in this context is what supply chain managerial competence logistics managers need to possess in order to enhance their individual performance in the new era. This question is addressed in this paper, which also explores the nexus of supply chain managerial competence expectation and possession upon which human resource development strategies are proposed accordingly.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey research design is adopted to empirically examine logistics managers’ supply chain managerial competence in the new era, and the forward-backward translation process was strictly followed. Data were collected through a survey conducted with owners or managers of Vietnamese firms whose business is in the logistics and related business areas, and 269 valid responses were used for analysis.

Findings

Results indicated that the proposed profile of four groups (foundation, core, specialist and technology-IT) and 38 competencies are valid and important to the individual performance of logistics managers in the context of Vietnam, which supports the tenet that logistics managers in the new era need to have a well-rounded profile of competencies, including those derived from contemporary change drivers. It was also found that the foundation competency group is perceived as more important than others, which is context specific given the current logistics development in Vietnam. Besides, it was also revealed that respondents in this research currently possess those competencies at a level which is lower than their perceived importance. An Importance-Possession (IPM) Matrix of Competency Development was mapped accordingly.

Research limitations/implications

The generalisation of this study would require further empirical examination from similar studies in other contexts, i.e. in other manufacturing and service sectors as well as in other developing and developed countries where logistics development is at different stages.

Practical implications

This research provides insights into the current competency profile of logistics managers in Vietnam, which can assist senior management with human resources development in their firms. Specifically, it is essential that Vietnamese logistics firms focus on providing education and training opportunities, both internally and externally, to enhance the level of possession of all competencies whose gaps between perceived importance and possession are the largest across the groups, especially those in the Maintaining Sustainably and Growing quadrants of the IPM.

Originality/value

Firstly, this research introduces an improvised framework of logistics managers’ supply chain managerial competence adopting the contingency approach, contributing to expanding the body of knowledge on how the competency profile of logistics managers should be developed. Secondly, the IPM matrix of competencies introduced in this research can be used as both the conceptual and managerial tool to classify and prioritise competencies for various purposes, e.g. education, training and policy implementation based on the nexus of supply chain competence expectation and possession.

Abstract

Purpose

The research objective is rooted in the principle of providing new insights and a collective perspective regarded as Supply Chain Quality Management 4.0 (SCQM4.0), an integration of all three concepts – Industrie 4.0, quality management and supply chain management.

Design/methodology/approach

A thorough review of historical developments and existing integration trends among Industrie 4.0, quality and supply chain approaches along with future research directions outlined in the main literature, was conducted. This work establishes a knowledge base on research topics, issues of integration and synergies with a concentration on the potential for deeper integration with supply chain operations.

Findings

This article not only introduced the term SCQM4.0 and proposed a definition for it, but also contributed a novel conceptual SCQM4.0 framework and evolutionary perspective through the SCQM4.0 maturation model. Stemming from the gaps, opportunities and benefits identified in the literature, the conceptual SCQM4.0 framework builds on the high potential of the SCQM4.0 constructs to achieve successful governance and implementation. Under the SCQM4.0 maturity framework, it provides a clear evolutionary path underpinned by the SCQM4.0 constructs.

Research limitations/implications

In the effort toward a successful SCQM4.0 implementation, the proposed SCQM4.0 maturity frameworks will be a “road map” for businesses to develop fully and actively in supply chain operations, bringing quality products and services for the company. Industry practitioners are encouraged to perform gap analysis and direct the implementation of the strategy to establish an excellent SCQM4.0.

Originality/value

This is one of the pioneering studies integrating all three concepts (Industrie 4.0, quality management and supply chain management), connecting the link and discovering more synergies to support the future development of more holistic management models. SCQM4.0 is expected to expand on the strengths, synergies and established relationships between technologies 4.0, quality and supply chain, contributing toward a pioneering and quality supply chain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to understand how social media marketing activities (SMMA) influence consumers’ perceived value of online-to-offline food ordering experiences, subsequently affecting satisfaction and intentions to visit physical establishments.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 845 participants was collected using a purposive sampling technique. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was then applied to assess the conceptual model and its hypotheses.

Findings

Analysis of the structural equation modeling showed support for all hypotheses. SMMA exhibited positive effects on trust, hedonic value and utilitarian value, while these in turn positively influenced the use of online-to-offline food delivery services (O2O-FDS). In addition, results indicated a positive effect of O2O-FDS use on omni-channel restaurant satisfaction which then led to increased intentions to dine in at physical restaurants.

Practical implications

Results suggest that engaging SMMA and O2O-FDS builds trust and encourages in-person visits.

Originality/value

Results from this study build upon the literature by shedding new light on the links between the effects of SMMA, trust, perceived value and consumers’ intentions to visit physical restaurants after using the O2O-FDS. In addition, consumers’ perceived trust, as well as hedonic and utilitarian values, mediate the effect of SMMA on O2O-FDS.
