Abstract

Purpose

Achieving sustainability goals for manufacturing firms depends on green human resource management practices and green intellectual capital. This study explores how sustainable approaches, such as green human resource management practices, green intellectual capital, sustainable leadership and green innovation, enhance sustainable performance. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether green intellectual capital and innovation mediate between green human resources management practices and sustainable performance in Pakistan’s manufacturing industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 458 executives representing 155 (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector in Pakistan using a self-administered questionnaire. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed for the data analysis.

Findings

The results indicated that green human resource management practices positively impact green intellectual capital, green innovation and sustainable performance. Additionally, green intellectual capital significantly affects both green innovation and sustainable performance. Furthermore, green intellectual capital and innovation mediate the relationship between green human resource management practices and sustainable performance. Results also reveal that sustainable leadership significantly moderates the relationships between green human resource management practices, green intellectual capital and green innovation.

Practical implications

The results of this study assist practitioners in appreciating and assessing the significance of green intellectual capital and green human resource management techniques. It also emphasizes the importance of green innovation and sustainable leadership in fostering sustainable performance.

Originality/value

This study guides managers and policymakers on how green human resource management practices, intellectual capital, innovation and sustainable leadership enable firms to achieve sustainable performance goals.

Abstract

Purpose

To meet an ever - increasing urbanization demand, urban complex projects have evolved to form the development type of HOPSCA (an acronym for Hotel, Office, Park, Shopping mall, Convention and Apartment, representing a new type of urban complex). Its integrated functions, complex structures and superior siting expose HOPSCA’s construction phase to higher and more uncertain safety risks. Despite this, research on construction safety risks of large urban complexes is scarce. This study addresses this by introducing the interval ordinal priority approach (Interval-OPA) method to build a safety risk assessment model for HOPSCA, targeting its construction safety risk management.

Design/methodology/approach

This study initially identifies risk factors via literature review, field survey and three Delphi method rounds, forming a construction safety risk list of HOPSCA projects. Then, Interval-OPA is employed to create a safety risk assessment model, and its validity confirmed through a representative case study of an ongoing project. Lastly, uncertainty and weighting analyses of the model results identify the most probable major construction accidents, safety risk factors and targeted prevention strategies for the urban complex projects construction phase.

Findings

The findings reveal that (1) there are 33 construction safety risks in HOPSCA’s construction phase across 4 aspects: “man-machine-environment-management”; (2) object strikes are the most prominent of accidents and need to be prioritized for prevention, especially when managerial risks are arising; (3) falls from heights are evaluated with the highest level of uncertainty, which represents an ambiguous area for safety management and (4) the result of the risk evaluation shows that there are nine critical construction safety risk factors for the HOPSCA project and that most of the management-level risk factors have high uncertainty. This study explores and provides effective measures to combat these factors.

Originality/value

This study innovatively applies the Interval-OPA method to risk assessment, offering a fitting method for evaluating the HOPSCA project’s construction safety risks and accidents. The model aids decision-makers in appropriate risk classification and selection of scientific risk prevention strategies, enhances HOPSCA’s construction safety management system and even benefits all under-construction projects, promoting the construction industry’s sustainable development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the value of maslahah in impulse buying behavior by investigating the influence of free shipping, cashback and religiosity of Muslim e-wallet users in East Java, Indonesia. Impulse buying, which is prevalent post-COVID-19, accounts for 60%–65% of total shopping, in contrast to conventional shopping, which is only 35%–40%.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a survey study aimed at Millennials and Generation Z. There were 236 respondents, but only 207 were valid and complete. In addition, this study used structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) to validate the hypothesis and evaluate the model. Additional tests were also carried out using multigroup analysis (MGA) to obtain results based on gender perspective.

Findings

Free shipping and cashback were shown to have a significant positive impact on impulse buying behavior. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, religiosity showed a significant positive influence on impulse buying. Therefore, consumption behavior should be evaluated using the concept of maslahah, which prioritizes fulfilling the most important needs. Responsible consumption for a Muslim should align with Islamic principles, which teach that wealth should be used for good things. While ideally, maslahah comes first, in a 5.0 society influenced by discounts and added incentives, impulse buying has become a normalized phenomenon. Regarding gender, differences show that men prioritize practical incentives, whereas women focus more on rational considerations and opportunities.

Research limitations/implications

This study uses a sample of several e-wallet brands with the most users in Indonesia; the respondents come from Millennials and Generation Z who are on the island of Java, Indonesia. Thus, it needs to be considered for generalization purposes by adding other brands and respondents from areas outside Java.

Practical implications

The results of this study include implications regarding strengthening the value of religiosity and maslahat in impulse buying of goods.

Social implications

In line with the results and analysis of this research, which provides a maslahah perspective in the analysis and a gender perspective in the methodology. Thus, this can be recognized as a contribution of thought related to social implications.

Originality/value

This study explores impulse buying based on the gender of respondents, which is not often found in previous research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of the regulatory focus of the top management team (TMT) members on the technological diversification of firms in high-technology industries based on the upper echelons theory and regulatory focus theory and explore the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses data on the Chinese Growth Enterprises Market Board (GEM)-listed companies from 2012 to 2016. The authors collected data on TMT regulatory focus from firms’ annual reports by Python programming. A fixed-effects model was used to test our hypotheses.

Findings

Results indicate that TMTs with a high promotion focus are associated with greater technological diversification, while TMTs with a high prevention focus are linked to lower technological diversification. Moreover, environmental uncertainty amplifies the positive relationship between promotion-focused TMTs and technological diversification, while it diminishes the negative relationship between prevention-focused TMTs and technological diversification.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to high-technology firms listed on the Chinese GEM, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Future research could validate these results in different countries and industries to enhance their robustness. Additionally, this study focuses on the impact of TMT regulatory focus on technological diversification; future studies could explore its influence on other strategic decisions, such as digital transformation or innovation strategies.

Practical implications

The results suggest that firms should carefully consider the regulatory focus of their TMT when making strategic decisions regarding technological diversification. Boards of directors should ensure that the TMT’s regulatory focus aligns with the firm’s strategic objectives, particularly in high-technology industries. Moreover, firms should adapt their strategies to the level of environmental uncertainty to better navigate the risks and opportunities presented by a dynamic market environment.

Originality/value

Supportive evidence allows authors to discuss how our findings contribute to the upper echelons theory, as well as the emerging stream of firm technological diversification, which provided valuable psychological insights into the factors influencing TMT strategic decision-making. Meanwhile, this paper integrates the factors of the industry macro-environment to explore the changes in the TMT regulatory focus on firm technological diversification under different contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find optimum production parameters using the Taguchi method in terms of printing material (a composite material produced from polylactic acid [PLA] and polypropylene [PP]) impacts on wear and friction.

Design/methodology/approach

A composite filament coil was fabricated from PLA and PP pellets using a lab-based extrusion device. The hardness and chemical structure of the filaments were examined. The filament-based material extrusion process was used to produce cylindrical shapes for tribological (pin-on-disc) analyses. Moreover, Taguchi methodology was performed to find the most influential parameter on tribological characteristics.

Findings

The hardness (Shore D) values of the filaments were polylactic acid (PLA) (85), polypropylene (PP) (58) and PLA and PP mixture of 50:50 (PLAPP) (63). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis results show that PLA and PP mixtured successfully. The diameter deviation of all samples was found as lower than 5%. The honeycomb pattern presented the best dimensional accuracy. Changing printing patterns and temperatures affect the friction profile. Coefficient of friction (COF) values of cylindrical samples of PLA and PP samples around 0.35 and 0.31, respectively. Overall, material type for wear resistance applications is a key point.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, there seems to be a lack of 3D-printed PP and PLAPP studied in terms of tribological aspects as a neat polymer. The tribological profiles of PP, PLA and PLAPP (PLA and PP mixture of 50:50) were investigated in this study. The author believe that this is a preliminary study that might close the gap and add some novel information to the current literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the extent of transgender (TG) inclusivity in workplaces, particularly comparing developed and developing economies. It seeks to address the social stigma faced by TG individuals in Asian economies, notably focusing on India. Through qualitative studies, the research identifies barriers hindering TG employment and proposes a theoretical framework to guide organizations in creating TG-inclusive work environments. The research intends to provide insights that enhance the experiences of TG employees while promoting diversity and inclusion in organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

This research comprises two qualitative studies aimed at first identifying barriers to TG employment through the lens of human resources (HR) professionals and then suggesting a theoretical framework to organizations for overcoming these barriers to achieve a TG-inclusive workplace. Thematic analysis, using Atlas.Ti software, and the interpretive structural modelling technique were used to synthesize a conceptual framework.

Findings

This study's outcomes highlight a substantial gap in achieving truly TG-inclusive workplaces, particularly in economies with prevalent social stigma like India. The findings show that traditional means may not be enough for building a TG-inclusive workplace, and organizations need to go the extra mile by promoting positive deviance and TG-centric corporate social responsibility initiatives to achieve results.

Originality/value

The results of this study provide insights for organizations seeking to improve the experiences of their TG employees and promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The incorporation of HR professionals' insights offers a practical perspective, and the conceptual framework proposed for organizations to overcome TG employment barriers is a novel contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

Equitable risk allocation is important for the effective management of inevitable risks in International Construction Joint Venture (ICJV) projects. Previous studies have documented risks facing ICJV projects. However, there is a dearth of studies on the risk allocation preferences that take into consideration the opinions of both the local and foreign partners. This study aims to fill this gap by ascertaining the risk allocation preferences of the partners of ICJV projects for effective risk management.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a survey, data on risk allocation preferences were collected from both local and foreign partners of ICJV projects using a comprehensive register of 74 risks.

Findings

Following analysis, six risks were allocated to the local partner, 11 were allocated to the foreign partner, 51 risks were shared, four were allocated to a third party and two were to be negotiated based on the specific circumstances of the project. Practically, the study’s findings will help ICJV partners in drafting their ICJV contracts to adequately allocate risks and reduce contract negotiation time considerably.

Practical implications

The findings from this study will help partners in drafting their joint venture contract agreement and also reduce the period for contract negotiation. Knowledge of the preferred risk allocation is important in allocating risks in the contract agreement to the relevant partner for effective management.

Originality/value

This study, to the best knowledge of the authors, is one of the early studies to ascertain the risk allocation preferences of ICJV project partners in the Ghanaian construction industry – a departure from previous studies which focused on the identification and evaluation of risks. This study is also different from previous studies by considering the allocation preferences of both partners of the ICJV. The collection of data from both partners of the ICJV helped to consider their perceptions on risk allocation and evaluation, essentially leading to cross-cultural and optimal risk allocation preferences.

Abstract

Purpose

Tolerance to ambiguity (TOLA) is a personal trait influencing one’s comfort and proficiency in navigating uncertain situations. While the concept of role ambiguity is well-established in sales literature, the broader trait of ambiguity has been largely overlooked in this context. In the dynamic landscape of modern business, uncertainty is a regular phenomenon, and navigating ambiguity is an invaluable skill. While salespeople are celebrated for their customer focus, negotiation skills and product knowledge, their capacity to embrace ambiguity-a skill that could be an important contributor to their success in the diverse global market is rarely studied. This study contributes by linking a salesperson’s TOLA and two well-established dimensions of emotional intelligence to adaptive selling behavior. Using responses from a sample of 209 employees of financial institutions in a large metropolitan city in India, this study shows that TOLA, understanding others' emotions and regulation of emotions positively influence a salesperson’s adaptive selling behavior. Further, results also point out that TOLA moderates the relationship between understanding other emotions and adaptive selling. To our knowledge, this is the first study that has explored the link between these two important skills of salespeople, thus extending TOLA as a critical construct to the sales field. Managerial implications and directions for future research are provided.

Design/methodology/approach

Using responses from a sample of 209 employees of financial institutions, a model was tested using structural equation modeling. A measurement model was used to assess the validity of the scales used in the study. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted using AMOS 28 with the scale items for understanding other’s emotions (UOE), regulation of emotions (ROE), adaptive selling behavior (ADPS), job performance (JOBP) and three mean-centered dimensions of the TOLA scale. A structural equation model was run using AMOS 28 to test the relationships among variables.

Findings

The study results show that TOLA has a strong positive relationship with adaptive selling. Further, results show that TOLA acts as a moderator in the relationship between understanding others’ emotions, a fact of emotional intelligence and adaptive selling behavior.

Research limitations/implications

To our knowledge this is the first study that explored the link between TOLA and adaptive selling, a critical predictor of sales performance. While the concept of role ambiguity is well-established in sales literature, the broader trait of ambiguity has been largely overlooked in this context. By establishing the link between these two important skills of salespeople, this study extends the concept of TOLA as a critical construct to the sales field.

Practical implications

Study results validate the important role of TOLA on salesperson’s ability to use adaptive selling behavior which is critical for sales performance. This study highlights the different ways sales professionals who possess a high TOLA can benefit. Field sales managers can play a crucial role in fostering a TOLA culture in the sale team and help leverage the relationship between TOLA, emotional intelligence and adaptive selling. By integrating qualities of TOLA into recruitment and training, managers can create a sales team that is not only effective in navigating uncertainties and thrive in dynamic and competitive business environments.

Originality/value

In sales settings, the concept of role ambiguity is well-established, but the broader trait of ambiguity has been largely overlooked and has rarely been part of sales research. A recent review of 15 studies on TOLA shows that almost all the studies used student samples and only a handful of them were done in organizational or sales settings. The current study aims to fill the gap in sales research by exploring how TOLA influences adaptive selling, one of the critical constructs in sales research.

Abstract

Purpose

Financial experience is very important in today’s dynamic world of constant globalization with the upsurge in sophisticated financial products entering the financial markets, especially in developing countries. This is because it helps the illiterate unbanked poor women owners of micro businesses to make wise financial judgments and options guided by psychology and cognition. This paper aims to ascertain how financial experience can promote microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda through an intervening role.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs a structural equation model through SmartPLS software to ascertain how financial experience can promote microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda through an intervening role.

Findings

The empirical findings from this study indicated that financial experience, as a significant and positive mediator, improves microfinance lending and the continued existence of women micro businesses in rural Uganda.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to the geographical ambit of the current study and sample source from only one developing country, future studies may collect data from other regions of the world for comparative analysis to give more insights on the role of financial experience in rural financial markets.

Practical implications

The government of Uganda should promote financial literacy to enhance the financial experience of women owners of micro businesses to help them make better financial judgements in the rural financial markets. This may increase microfinance lending and the continued existence of vibrant women micro businesses in rural areas. As a result, this could lead to the creation of more jobs for the ever-growing younger population in Uganda.

Originality/value

This study is motivated by the lack of understanding and experience about key financial concepts among more than 3.5 billion adults, mostly women. It applies the Experiential Learning Theory grounded in psychology and cognition to show how the financial experience of women who run micro businesses derived from repeated retrieval of knowledge and reflection, can help them to make sound financial judgments to become financially included by rural-based microfinance institutions. Learning-by-doing allows women owners of micro businesses to repetitively take prudent saving, borrowing and investment selections that help them to generate income to meet timely loan repayment to access more microcredit for the continued existence. This is inadequate in the current theory of microfinance lending in rural financial markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) theoretical model, this empirical research aims to examine and validate how tourists’ interactions with 360-degree virtual reality (VR) videos incorporating Web navigability and visual interface design quality (stimulus) on travel websites can make tourists more engaged and then satisfied (organism), which could make them more likely to visit destinations and spread electronic word of mouth (e-WOM) (response).

Design/methodology/approach

Using the convenience sampling method, 975 responses were collected through a questionnaire. The data were analysed using Smart-PLS 4 software to investigate the hypothesised relationships.

Findings

The findings demonstrate that 360-degree VR videos significantly create Web user engagement, and Web user engagement is significantly associated with Web user satisfaction. The result shows that Web user engagement and satisfaction impact the intention to visit the tourist destination. Additionally, Web user satisfaction impacts e-WOM. Lastly, navigability and visual interface design quality are significantly moderated between 360-degree VR videos and Web user engagement.

Research limitations/implications

This research only examined the tourists’ behavioural intentions with 360-degree VR videos during the pre-travel phase. In contrast, future research may investigate how tourists behave with VR during the on-site and post-travel phases.

Practical implications

Tourism marketers should not only adopt 360-degree VR but also integrate Web navigability and visual interface design to boost Web users’ engagement on tourism websites.

Originality/value

This study advances the study of VR from the tourists’ psychological perspective. Moreover, the SOR theory has been re-examined from the VR and technology tourism perspectives. It provides a general understanding of the behavioural aspects of tourists in developing countries.

结果

研究结果表明, 360度虚拟现实(VR)视频显著提高了网络用户参与度, 网络用户参与与网络用户满意度显著相关。结果表明, 网络用户参与度和满意度对旅游目的地的访问意愿有影响。此外, 网络用户满意度也会影响电子口碑。最后, 在360度虚拟现实(VR)视频和网络用户参与度之间, 导航性和视觉界面设计质量显著适中。

Objetivo

Utilizando el modelo teórico estímulo-organismo-respuesta (SOR), esta investigación empírica examinó y validó cómo las interacciones de los turistas con los vídeos de RV de 360 grados que incorporan la navegabilidad web y la calidad del diseño de la interfaz visual (estímulo) en los sitios web de viajes pueden hacer que los turistas se sientan más comprometidos y luego satisfechos (organismo), lo que podría hacerles más propensos a visitar los destinos y a difundir el e-WOM (respuesta).

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Utilizando el método de muestreo por conveniencia, se recogieron 975 respuestas a través de un cuestionario. Los datos se analizaron mediante el software Smart-PLS 4 para investigar las relaciones hipotetizadas.

Resultados

Los resultados demuestran que los vídeos de RV de 360 grados generan un compromiso significativo de los usuarios de la web y que el compromiso de los usuarios de la web se asocia significativamente con su satisfacción. El resultado muestra que el compromiso y la satisfacción del usuario web repercuten en la intención de visitar el destino turístico. Además, la satisfacción del usuario web influye en el e-WOM. Por último, la navegabilidad y la calidad del diseño de la interfaz visual son significativamente moderadas entre los vídeos de RV de 360 grados y el compromiso del usuario web.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

Esta investigación sólo examinó las intenciones de comportamiento de los turistas con los vídeos de RV de 360 grados durante la fase previa al viaje. En cambio, en futuras investigaciones se podría estudiar cómo se comportan los turistas con la RV durante las fases in situ y posterior al viaje.

Implicaciones prácticas
