Abstract

Purpose

The popularity of Management Control Systems (MCS) has increased due to rising uncertainty in business operations. They help companies implement strategies, manage information and incentivize managers with common goals. Therefore, the research aims to take stock of the evolution of studies on MCS adoption, identifying trends and future avenues.

Design/methodology/approach

While a few systematic literature reviews have investigated the implications of MCS adoption amid specific contexts, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the whole research stream is lacking. Consequently, our study analyzes relevant scientific literature on the topic of MCS from 1970 to 2022, through the use of VOSviewer, R Bibliometrix and Latent Dirichlet Allocation to visualize the bibliometric results.

Findings

The study provides a comprehensive overview of key emerging topics in MCS literature and the ways in which they have developed over the decades, along with a structured research agenda built upon the literature gaps found amid current and past scientific production. It does so by analyzing scientific production from multiple bibliometric aspects and advanced text-mining techniques to extract common emerging themes from the dataset.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no attempt has yet been made to synthesize MCS literature through a bibliometric review. The bibliometric perspective on MCS enhances scholars' understanding of the historical path and future trends of the literature stream, while helping practitioners update existing MCS conceptualizations in light of contemporary changes.

Abstract

Purpose

New public management reforms have allocated a central place within public organisations to performance measurement. The balanced scorecard (BSC) is one of the models adapted and promoted for use in that setting. After more than 30 years of practice, this study reviews the leading literature published on the BSC for government entities and considers how it has been developed, the main insights gained and what could be investigated further.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature review procedure inspired by a structured literature review process was conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases.

Findings

Our research approach allowed us to obtain 39 articles published in 26 journals, showing a steady interest over the period from 1999 to 2022. These studies mainly adopt a case study approach with a practical orientation. With diverse situations reported, ranging from more beneficial situations to ones involving greater difficulties, this study calls for future researchers to investigate not only the implementation and use issues of the BSC but also its continuing use over time and the course that its application may take. Additionally, future researchers should not ignore the political and social issues concerning its implementation and use. We also observe that qualitative approaches are likely to remain valuable research designs for pursuing our research suggestions.

Originality/value

This study offers a comprehensive review of the use of the BSC for government entities, connecting the results and considerations to further research with reflections on NPM.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the effects of both transient and chronic loneliness on consumers’ variety-seeking (VS) behavior and to identify the various underlying mechanisms involved.

Design/methodology/approach

Four studies were adopted to clarify how transient and chronic loneliness affect consumers’ VS behavior.

Findings

Both transient and chronic loneliness promote consumers’ VS behavior. More importantly, the effect of transient loneliness on VS behavior is driven by perceived loss of control, whereas the effect of chronic loneliness on VS behavior is driven by need for uniqueness and sensation-seeking.

Research limitations/implications

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first to explore the differential roles of transient and chronic loneliness on VS behavior, which may open new avenues for future research. First, future research could investigate moderators that influence the impacts of transient and chronic loneliness on VS behavior. Second, future research could examine different participant populations and use cognitive neuroscience techniques to further verify the differential roles of these two types of loneliness on VS behavior.

Practical implications

This research contributes to marketing practice by providing practical guidance on how to effectively design different marketing strategies to promote VS for consumers with different types of loneliness. For consumers with transient loneliness, marketers can benefit from a concerted focus on improving consumers’ sense of control. Yet, for consumers with chronic loneliness, marketing strategies that improve consumers’ need for uniqueness will be more effective.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature on loneliness and consumer behavior, which has largely overlooked the distinct roles of different types of loneliness (i.e. transient vs chronic loneliness) in influencing consumer behavior. Specifically, this paper conducted a comparative analysis of the impacts of transient and chronic loneliness on consumers’ VS behavior and proposed that transient and chronic loneliness promote consumers’ VS behavior through divergent underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

In today's world, technology is at the forefront of the new global focus, and it is a key field of interest for countries striving to excellence. Integrating technology into the agricultural sector has the potential to significantly improve progress toward sustainable development goals. This study investigates how applying technology and sustainability to agriculture can influence women's roles in this sector in Jordan. We examine the impacts of technological implementation, including access to information, economic empowerment, skill development, and environmental impact, as well as the challenges such as financial barriers, limited land access, and cultural constraints. Our findings highlight the importance of the government and major organizations in facilitating the use of technology through training programs and financial support for farmers. We recommend implementing project ideas that promote technological advancement in agriculture, such as our proposed project “HASSAD,” which aims to increase technology adoption among farmers while also providing additional services. By supporting these initiatives, we can promote economic growth while also empowering women in agriculture, resulting in a more sustainable and inclusive agricultural sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the steady-state creep of the multilayer Silver-Tin transient liquid phase (AgSn-TLP) interconnects of the power modules using experiments and constitutive modeling.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of engineered creep tests is executed at different temperatures and stress levels to produce creep strain versus time data. Accordingly, steady-state creep parameters are acquired through nonlinear regressions. Two steady-state creep relations, including hyperbolic sine and power laws, are created, and validated with measured data. Afterwards, numerical studies are executed to examine the thermomechanical response of the AgSn-TLP interconnects compared to other bond materials.

Findings

Generally, the AgSn- TLP interconnections showed higher resistance to the accumulation of creep strains, indicating their potential to perform efficiently in high temperature applications.

Originality/value

This paper models the steady-state creep response of the silver-tin TLP bonds using hyperbolic sine and power laws. These models are important for stress and strain analysis using numerical simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the implications of green knowledge sharing, green empowerment and participation and green values toward hotel employees’ green creativity.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was gathered from operational level employees of hospitality facilities Ghana. Through the partial least square structural equation modeling, bias-corrected and accelerated (BCa) confidence intervals obtained from 10,000 bootstrap subsamples were used to determine the significance of the hypothesized paths. This was preceded by examining the quality of the measurement and structural models.

Findings

It was established that green knowledge sharing is a positive predictor of green empowerment and participation. Green empowerment and participation also positively predicted employee green behavior and also partially mediated the link between green knowledge sharing and employee green behavior. Green values also positively moderated the connection green knowledge sharing has with employee green behavior.

Practical implications

To enhance the green creativity of their employees so that the sustainability objectives are attained, general managers in hotels should institute strategies that promote green knowledge sharing among their employees, ensure the green empowerment and participation of their employees and inculcate green values in their employees.

Originality/value

This study expands the hotel greening literature by establishing the mediating and moderating processes for employee green creativity which is underrepresented in the literature. Besides, it extends the social learning theory in a green context.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this study is the development of Zimbabwe's rescue culture. The current framework for rescue operations was shaped by the historical development of laws pertaining to insolvency and liquidation. Socioeconomic pressures in Zimbabwe can be attributed to some of the main factors that led to the need for rescue legislation and restructuring, which in turn fueled the shift from a culture that supported credit to one that supported debtors. The aim of this study is to offer an overview of the key ideas and principles of the corporate rescue programs now implemented in Mauritius and to investigate the ways in which these ideas and principles impacted the newly enacted Zimbabwean Insolvency Act.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts a comparative legal approach using Zimbabwe and Mauritius as comparative case studies. The fact that both countries are former British colonies and their insolvency legal framework inspired by common law makes them appropriate to be compared. Legislation and case law are used to conduct the comparative study with the aim of Zimbabwe drawing lessons from the Mauritian legal framework on insolvency. Mauritius is a nearly ideal subject for a comparative case study because of its vibrant and fairly successful bankruptcy law framework, as well as its fictional corporate rescue culture. These might provide Zimbabwe with some motivation and guidance.

Findings

The legal framework on insolvency in Zimbabwe has been found to be too stringent and does not provide companies with any lifeline. There is arguably a tendency of forcing companies out of business rather than implementing a rescue culture. Selected aspects of the Mauritian legal framework on insolvency can be mapped onto the Zimbabwean system to implement a much-needed rescue culture given its challenging economic context.

Originality/value

This study contributes to comparative legal literature in the field of insolvency. It is among the very few research work that compares the legal structure on insolvency of Zimbabwe and Mauritius in a collaborative endeavor to enhance the insolvency law and its application in Zimbabwe.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to demonstrate the importance of recognizing stress in the workplace. Accurate novel objective methods that use electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brainwaves can promote employee well-being. However, using these devices can be positive and potentially harmful as manipulative practices undermine autonomy.

Design/methodology/approach

Emphasis is placed on business ethics as it relates to the ethics of action in terms of positive and negative responsibility, autonomous decision-making and self-determined work through a literature review. The concept of relational autonomy provides an orientation toward heteronomous employment relationships.

Findings

First, using digital devices to recognize stress and promote health can be a positive outcome, expanding the definition of digital well-being as opposed to dependency, non-use or reduction. Second, the transfer of socio-relational autonomy, according to Oshana, enables criteria for self-determined work in heteronomous employment relationships. Finally, the deployment and use of such EEG-based devices for stress detection can lead to coercion and manipulation, not only in interpersonal relationships, but also directly and more subtly through the technology itself, interfering with self-determined work.

Originality/value

Stress at work and EEG-based devices measuring stress have been discussed in numerous articles. This paper is one of the first to explore ethical considerations using these brain–computer interfaces from an employee perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of our research is to explore the role of employee AI identity in influencing employee proactive behavior and its boundary conditions in AI workplace.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the IT identity theory and motivation theory, our research discusses the effects of employee AI identity on employee proactive behavior and regarded the proactive work intention as a mediating variable. Meanwhile, we considered organization inducement as a boundary condition and discussed the moderating effects of it and its two sub-dimensions (development rewards and material rewards). Data were collected from 326 employees and partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyzed and draw the conclusions.

Findings

Findings showed that employee AI identity significantly affects employee proactive behavior, in which the proactive work intention play a mediating role. Moreover, three subdimensions (relatedness, emotional energy, dependence) of employee AI identity have different effects on formation of employee AI identity. And organization inducement acts as a positive moderating role, development rewards and material rewards play different roles in the formation of organization inducements.

Originality/value

Our research explores the different paths that influence employee proactive behavior and their boundary moderation, while analyzing the results of these influences in different subdimensions, deepening the research on employee AI identity and organization inducement. Our research is conducive to the development of the identity theory and organizational behavior research and provide suggestions for managers to improve their organizational management level.
