Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study has been to fill the gap detected in the literature and to analyze whether the application of management of R&D in accordance with UNE 166002:2021 allows companies to obtain higher product innovation and better performance, specifically incremental and radical product innovations.

Design/methodology/approach

The population used in this study included Spanish manufacturing organizations that were active, had more than 50 employees according to the SABI. The information was collected through a structured questionnaire previously tested using a company specializing in the sector under the supervision of the authors. A total of 1,154 companies were randomly contacted in order to reach an acceptable number of 225 valid questionnaires. The data analysis has been carried out with structural equation methodology.

Findings

The results obtained with a sample of 225 companies show that the application of this standard for innovation management promotes the development of new products with incremental and radical changes, and improves business performance. It has also been found that incremental and radical product innovations mediate the relationship between this standard and performance.

Research limitations/implications

Firstly, the survey is only addressed to the company's operations manager. Secondly, the sample used is cross-sectional, whereas innovation management implies a broad implementation process.

Practical implications

Managers must know that radical and incremental product innovation can improve the company's operational performance. And the most direct implication of this work is that, those companies that are committed to the development of innovations should seriously consider the application of the principles incorporated in Standard 166,002, as an instrument that improves the results of innovation in the organization. Since this SIMS promotes both types of innovations, it improves results directly and indirectly through these product innovations.

Originality/value

The existing literature indicates that no empirical study has focused on the benefits of this SIMSs for innovation and BP. This paper fills this gap detected in the literature and analyzes the results of the implementation of this standard on incremental and radical product innovations and business performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on the research progress of intelligent self-healing anti-corrosion coatings in the aviation field in the past few years. The paper provides certain literature review supports and development direction suggestions for future research on intelligent self-healing coatings in aviation.

Design/methodology/approach

This mini-review uses a systematic literature review process to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of intelligent self-healing anti-corrosion coatings that have been researched and applied in the field of aviation in recent years. In total, 64 articles published in journals in this field in the last few years were analysed in this paper.

Findings

The authors conclude that the incorporation of multiple external stimulus-response mechanisms makes the coatings smarter in addition to their original self-healing corrosion protection function. In the future, further research is still needed in the research and development of new coating materials, the synergistic release of multiple self-healing mechanisms, coating preparation technology and corrosion monitoring technology.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the few systematic literature reviews on intelligent self-healing anti-corrosion coatings in aviation. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of the topical issues of such coatings and present their views and opinions by discussing the opportunities and challenges that self-healing coatings will face in future development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to characterize a new structural bi-material (scaffold and filler).

Design/methodology/approach

The bi-material has been obtained by means of an additive manufacturing system consisting of a fused filament fabrication extruder head and an epoxy resin depositor head. The new bi-material will consist of a thermoplastic material that will serve as the main structure and an epoxy resin that will serve as a filler and adhesion between layers. The creation of this new bi-material will improve the physical–chemical and mechanical properties with respect to the thermoplastic material. This paper will focus on the impact behavior of IZOD and the impact behavior of punctures.

Findings

The new polylactic acid (PLA) and epoxy bi-material allow improvements in toughness and puncture impact resistance compared to the PLA thermoplastic. This increase in toughness is between 20% and 30% depending on the orientation of the print. In the same way, the energy absorbed in the puncture impact test has been increased by 42%–48%.

Practical implications

The improvement in the impact absorption capacity of this new bi-material makes it ideal for the manufacture of medical parts in which customization, lightness and impact resistance are their main characteristics such as sports protection systems.

Originality/value

The originality of creating parts through additive manufacturing that combines a material generated with cold extrusion, such as epoxy resin and a material generated with hot extrusion, such as thermoplastics, lies in the unique synergy that this mixed and simultaneous technique offers. By uniting these two manufacturing methods, it allows the exploration of new physical and chemical properties in the resulting parts, taking advantage of the individual advantages of each material. This combination opens the door to the creation of components with a wider range of characteristics, from strength and durability to flexibility and temperature resistance, thus offering innovative and versatile solutions for various applications in fields such as engineering, medicine and design.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the effects of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) on the return of growth/value and small/large-cap stocks during expansionary and recessionary periods across a conditional distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors selected a sample covering the period between 01/1995–05/2021. Quantile regressions were applied to the EPU and Russell indices. Business cycles were established following the NBER.

Findings

The results show that EPU has a negative effect on stocks with the intensity of the effect depending on the stock's profile. Small-cap and growth stocks were found to be most sensitive to EPU, especially during recessions. The negative effect is moderated by the economic cycle but is progressively diluted at the lower tail of the stock return distribution.

Practical implications

The findings shed more light on investment strategies for growth/value investors that pursue opportunities arising from a changing economic cycle.

Originality/value

This study makes the following contributions: (1) explores the impact of EPU on the return of different stocks across a conditional distribution, and (2) provides evidence on how the economic cycle influences EPU impact on growth/value stocks and small/large stocks.

我們選擇了涵蓋1995年1月與2021年5月期間的樣本進行研究。我們於經濟政策不確定性指數和羅素指數上採用分位數迴歸法進行研究; 並跟隨著美國國家經濟研究局,建立了多個經濟週期。

研究結果

研究結果顯示,經濟政策不確定性對股票是有負面影響的,而影響的強度則視乎股票的投資組合而定。我們發現,小盤股和成長型股票對經濟政策不確定性是非常敏感的,尤其是在經濟衰退期間。這負面影響會被經濟週期緩和,唯這緩和作用卻會在股票收益的低尾處逐漸減輕。

實務方面的啟示

研究結果使我們更容易理解為尋找因經濟週期改變而衍生的機會的增長/價值投資者所提供的投資策略。

研究的原創性/價值

本研究有以下的貢獻:(一) 、 探究了經濟政策不確定性對跨條件分佈、不同的股票收益的影響; (二) 、為經濟週期會如何左右經濟政策不確定性對成長型股票/價值股和小盤股/大型股的影響,提供了證據。

Abstract

Purpose

In the face of frequent supply chain disruptions, this study aims to identify the relationships between human capital (HC), digital supply chain practice (DSCP) and supply chain robustness and resilience (i.e. SCRO and SCRE).

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the proposed conceptual model based on the resource-based view and organizational information processing theory, an empirical study was conducted using a sample of Chinese manufacturers. Hierarchical regression is applied to understand the direct effect, mediating effect and moderating effect among HC, DSCP, SCRO, SCRE and digital culture.

Findings

The results reveal that HC positively influences digital maturity and supply chain resilience. DSCP positively affects both SCRO and SCRE. However, HC does not significantly influence the adoption of digital tools, and only employees’ capital has a positive relationship with SCRO. In addition, the moderating effect of digital culture on the relationship between HC and DSCP was examined.

Originality/value

As an early exploration of the relationships among HC, DSCP, SCRO and SCRE, this study enriches the literature by offering new insights and responding to the call for more empirical research and theoretical application. It emphasizes the importance of HC and DSCP as strategic resources and highlights the need for a digital culture to implement DSCP.

Abstract

Purpose

Legitimacy is the perceived appropriateness of an organisation to a social system in terms of values, norms and definitions. This research analyses how customer reviews, news media and experts’ opinions influence the legitimacy perception of high-end restaurants. The aim is to understand how collective evaluators’ opinions impact the individual legitimacy perception, linking the micro and macro levels of legitimacy. This study measures and analyses the relationships and impacts of individual (customers) and collective (experts and news media) judgments to rationalise these differences in legitimacy perceptions.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was conducted through a combined analysis of the reviews published in news media, online customer review platforms and experts’ publications. This study elaborates a theoretical model using partial least squares structural equation modelling analysing 246 Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain.

Findings

Our findings indicate that individual legitimacy judgments are impacted by news media but not by experts. On the contrary, experts’ evaluations positively impact news media’s evaluations. The individual legitimacy perception of the Haute Cuisine restaurant is influenced by the collective judgments of news media.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research states the application of the multi-level legitimacy theory to analyse the relationship between news media, online customer reviews and expert evaluations, thus the individual and collective legitimacy perceptions of Haute Cuisine restaurants. Additionally, this study adds to legitimacy theory by revealing the relationships of legitimacy judgments on micro and macro levels and analysing which and how audiences perceive organisational legitimacy.

Abstract

Purpose

Focusing on the resource crowding-out effect, this study aims to examine the relationship between an enterprise’s digital transformation and the internalisation of environmental costs.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper manually collects environmental cost data and measures corporate digital transformation constructed through a machine learning word vector (Word2Vec) technology approach based on the text information of annual reports (MD&A) for heavily polluting firms.

Findings

Corporate digital transformation has a significant inhibitory effect on the internalisation of corporate environmental costs. This is because low-level digital transformation has crowded out cash flows, preventing China’s heavily polluting firms from having the extra capacity needed to internalise environmental costs. This crowding-out effect emerges when companies face problems such as capital shortages, short-term profit pressure and intense market competition. These results have the following important implications.

Practical implications

The research highlights the need for enterprises to align digital transformation and sustainability strategies by strengthening resource endowment and optimising internal resource allocation. This requires effective use of digital technology and a long-term sustainability vision for heavily polluting firms facing environmental policy pressures.

Social implications

Enterprises should assume more social responsibility and achieve sustainable socioeconomic development. It will also help mitigate the adverse environmental externalities stemming from their operations.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study considers the impact of enterprise digital transformation on the internalisation level of enterprise environmental costs for the first time and uses enterprises’ financial, management, market characteristics and ownership characteristics to analyse the impact mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of the interdisciplinary literature on drones in last-mile delivery (LMD) to extrapolate pertinent insights from and into the logistics management field.

Design/methodology/approach

Rooting their analytical categories in the LMD literature, the authors performed a deductive, theory refinement SLR on 307 interdisciplinary journal articles published during 2015–2022 to integrate this emergent phenomenon into the field.

Findings

The authors derived the potentials, challenges and solutions of drone deliveries in relation to 12 LMD criteria dispersed across four stakeholder groups: senders, receivers, regulators and societies. Relationships between these criteria were also identified.

Research limitations/implications

This review contributes to logistics management by offering a current, nuanced and multifaceted discussion of drones' potential to improve the LMD process together with the challenges and solutions involved.

Practical implications

The authors provide logistics managers with a holistic roadmap to help them make informed decisions about adopting drones in their delivery systems. Regulators and society members also gain insights into the prospects, requirements and repercussions of drone deliveries.

Originality/value

This is one of the first SLRs on drone applications in LMD from a logistics management perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on a contingent resource-based view, this paper explores whether and how data-driven supply chain orientation (DDSCO) affects supply chain performance (SCP).

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from 307 manufacturers in China, Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the reliability and validity of measures, and bootstrapping was used to test all hypotheses.

Findings

DDSCO positively and significantly influences SCP and supply chain risk management capabilities (i.e. robustness and resilience). Additionally, supply chain risk management capabilities partially mediate the relationship between DDSCO and SCP. Furthermore, the findings provide evidence for the moderating effect of supply dynamism on the DDSCO–SCP relationship, with robustness and resilience capability functioning as mediators.

Originality/value

Building upon existing digital strategies and supply chain performance literature, this study provides a new perspective (supply chain risk management capabilities) on maintaining a sustainable supply chain under supply dynamism. These findings offer new theoretical and managerial contributions that add value to the supply chain management literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) is a multi-stage process that handles the adverse impact of disruptions in the supply chain network (SCN), and various SCRM techniques have been widely developed in the literature. As artificial intelligence (AI) techniques advance, they are increasingly applied in SCRM to enhance risk management’s capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

In the current, systematic literature review (SLR), which is based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method, we analysed the existing literature on AI-based SCRM methods without any time limit to categorise the papers’ focus in four stages of the SCRM (identification, assessment, mitigation and monitoring). Three research questions (RQs) consider different aspects of an SCRM method: interconnectivity, external events exposure and explainability.

Findings

For the PRISMA process, 715 journal and conference papers were first found from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS); then, by automatic filtering and screening of the found papers, 72 papers were shortlisted and read thoroughly, our review revealed research gaps, leading to five key recommendations for future studies: (1) Attention to considering the ripple effect of risks, (2) developing methods to explain the AI-based models, (3) capturing the external events impact on the SCN, (4) considering all stages of SCRM holistically and (5) designing user-friendly dashboards.

Originality/value

The current SLR found research gaps in AI-based SCRM and proposed directions for future studies.
