Abstract

Purpose

The carbon complementary supply chain (CCSC) is a collaborative framework that facilitates internal carbon credit trading agreements among supply chain agents in compliance with prevailing carbon regulations. Such agreements are highly beneficial, prompting agents to consider joint investment in emission reduction initiatives. However, capital investments come with inevitable opportunity costs, compelling agents to weigh the potential revenue from collaborative investments against these costs. Thus, this paper mainly explores carbon abatement strategies and operational decisions of the CCSC members and the influence of opportunity costs on the strategic choice of cooperative and noncooperative investment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a novel biform game-based theoretical framework that captures the interplay of pricing competition and investment cooperation among CCSC agents and assesses the impact of opportunity costs on CCSC profits and social welfare. Besides, the authors also compare the biform game-based collaborative scenario (Model B) to the noncooperative investment scenario (Model N) to investigate the conditions under which collaborative investment is most effective.

Findings

The biform game-based collaborative investment strategy enhances the economic performance of the traditional energy manufacturer, who bears the risk of opportunity costs, as well as the retailer. Additionally, it incentivizes the renewable energy manufacturer to improve environmental performance through renewable projects.

Originality/value

This research contributes significantly by establishing a theoretical framework that integrates the concepts of opportunity costs and biform game theory, offering new insights into the strategic management of carbon emissions within supply chains.

Abstract

Purpose: In this study, monolith analysis methods, microservice identification, and decomposition methods proposed for the transition to microservice architectures that enable the development of appropriate solutions by adapting to the complex demands that will shape the technological infrastructure of the future are evaluated.

Need for the study: Decomposition from monolithic architectures to microservices has become a popular approach in organizations and companies with Industry 5.0. This transformation of Industry 5.0 enables businesses to gain a competitive advantage and can provide a quick solution to personalized problems such as personal service systems.

Methodology: The study, decomposition from monolith to microservice, initially includes monolith analysis, followed by microservice decomposition review. Various classification methods have been proposed for microservice identification and decomposition and are aligned with Industry 5.0 principles, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI)-based approaches, especially human-centered AI.

Findings: Four analysis methods (domain, static, dynamic, and version) are identified for monolith analysis, with static and dynamic being the most common. Version analysis is not typically used alone. In the decomposition phase, clustering-based methods are prevalent due to the uncertain dimensions of microservices. Rule-based and unsupervised methods are identified for decomposition, with AI algorithms like affinity propagation, Kmeans clustering, hierarchical clustering, Hungarian algorithm, genetic algorithm, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), and minimum spanning tree (MST) being employed.

Practical implications: Microservice architecture enables flexibility, scalability, and resilience compared to monolithic structures. Decomposing large-scale monolith projects into microservices is challenging, requiring selection of appropriate monolith analysis methods based on project details (e.g., domain analysis for detailed Unified Modelling Language (UML) diagrams) before proceeding with decomposition. This transformation improves deployment, maintenance, fault isolation, and scalability, while allowing for diverse service-specific databases and programming languages.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to empirically examine the effects of waste management (WM) practices on financial distress (FD) in a heavily regulated environmental context and investigates the moderating role of green initiatives (GINVs) on the WM−FD relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample of 1,667 firm years of UK-based companies from 2002 to 2021 and applies a panel regression analysis controlling for industry- and year-fixed effects. Data on WM, GINVs and governance are sourced from LSEG (formerly known as Refinitiv Asset4 ESG), whereas financial data are collected from WorldScope. The study also adopts alternative measures for FD and WM practices and uses a two-stage least squares analysis and the Heckman selection model as robustness checks.

Findings

The findings reveal that FD levels decrease significantly when waste generation declines and waste recycling increases, suggesting that firms with better WM practices have lower FD levels. The results further show the moderating effect of GINVs on the link between waste generation and FD and suggest that increased GINVs are effective in reducing FD by mitigating waste levels. However, waste recycling and GINVs are found to have a substitutive effect on FD. The findings remain robust to the use of alternative measures and endogeneity issues.

Originality/value

This work is among the first to investigate the WM-FD nexus and highlights the importance of effective WM practices in improving the financial sustainability of UK firms. The study also extends prior research by testing the moderating impact of GINVs and suggests that firms need to carefully balance their GINVs with waste recycling efforts to achieve optimal financial sustainability in a heavily regulated environmental context, such as the UK.

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the attitude synchronization issue of multi-spacecraft formation flying systems under the limited communication resources.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a distributed learning Chebyshev neural network controller (LCNNC) combining a dynamic event-triggered (DET) mechanism and a learning CNN model to achieve accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.

Findings

The proposed method can significantly reduce the internal communication frequency and improve the attitude synchronization accuracy.

Practical implications

This method requires the low communication resources, has a high control accuracy and is thus suitable for engineering applications.

Originality/value

A novel DET mechanism-based LCNNC is proposed to achieve the accurate multi-spacecraft attitude synchronization under communication constraints.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to address the following two research questions. RQ1: What are the influential user archetypes in the social question-answering (SQA) community? RQ2: To what extent does user feedback affect influential users in changing from one archetype to another?

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a sample of 13,840 influential users drawn from the Covid-19 community on Zhihu, the archetypes of influential users were derived from their ongoing participation behavior in the community using the Gaussian mixture model. Additionally, user feedback characteristics such as relevance and volume from 222,965 commenters who contributed 546,344 comments were analyzed using the multinomial logistic regression model to investigate the archetype change of influential users.

Findings

Findings suggest that influential users could be clustered into three distinctive archetypes: touch-and-go influential users, proactive influential users and super influential users. Moreover, feedback variables have various impacts on the influential user archetype change, including a shift toward creating higher-quality content and fostering increased interaction, a shift toward generating lower-quality content and decreased interaction but improved speed and having mixed effects due to differences in information processing among these archetypes.

Originality/value

This study expands the existing knowledge of influential users and proposes practical approaches to cultivate them further.

Abstract

Purpose

In today's dynamic and competitive business environment, organizations strive to foster innovation as a key driver of success. To achieve this, leaders play a critical role in promoting innovative work behavior among employees. This study is based on finding the effect of ambidextrous leadership on innovative work behavior with employee voice behavior as a mediator and employee moral identity as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is conducted on Pakistan's hotel and restaurant industry. Drawing upon a sample of 410 valid responses from employees from various hotels, data is collected using self-report questionnaires.

Findings

The study revealed that ambidextrous leadership is positively related to innovative work behavior, and employee voice behavior mediated their relationship very well. However, ambidextrous leadership generates more positive and creative outcomes for the organization if it accompanies employee voice. Moreover, employees with a stronger moral identity are more likely to engage in voice behavior when they perceive ambidextrous leadership practices.

Practical implications

In Pakistan's hotel industry, developing leadership programs that focus on ambidextrous leadership, encouraging employee voice, and aligning with employees' moral values are key to fostering innovation. Organizations should cultivate a culture of openness, trust, and recognition, alongside implementing systems that reward innovative contributions. It's crucial to provide opportunities for skill development, decision-making participation, and a sense of ownership among employees. Moreover, providing necessary resources and supporting a culture that embraces experimentation and learning from failures are fundamental for sustained innovation.

Originality/value

By adopting ambidextrous leadership practices, leaders can stimulate employee voice behavior, which, in turn, contributes to the development of innovative work behavior. Furthermore, understanding the importance of employee moral identity can help leaders tailor their leadership approaches to create an ethical work environment that promotes employee engagement and innovation.

Purpose

1. Explore the important role of sole actual controller in the innovation decision of the firm and the different effects of the ownership of sole actual controller on innovation; 2. Explore whether the role played by sole actual controllers varies in different types of firms; 3. Explore the important role of cooperative culture in the internal governance of firms and whether sole actual controller firms feel a rejection effect on cooperative culture.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collect data on Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2021 to analyze the role of the sole actual controller on innovation investment, as well as the moderating effect of cooperative culture in corporate annual reports using natural language processing.

Findings

The authors find that sole actual controllers promote corporate innovation investment and that concentrated equity inhibits corporate innovation investment, while dispersed equity concentration promotes it. In addition, cooperative culture has a nonlinear moderating effect on the relationship between SACs and innovation.

Research limitations/implications

On the one hand, this study focuses chiefly on the decision-making behavior of top managers, such as the SACs and shareholders, and does not account for the role of bottom-level employees or professional R&D teams in innovation. On the other hand, although this study discusses the moderating role of corporate cooperative culture, it is limited to internal cooperative culture; cooperative culture should also consider external cooperation, such as cooperation between companies or between companies and universities.

Practical implications

First, companies should actively implement the SAC model and scientifically select a truly compassionate and visionary SAC as the dominant person in the company. Second, the Chinese government needs to standardize the identification of actual controllers, who should not be a shareholder of the company. Third, policymakers should promote the reform of the mixed system of enterprises, optimize the shareholding structure of firms, make executives an important part of corporate governance. Fourth, cooperation culture is a good start, though firms should avoid letting it become a “double-edged sword” of the management mode of the SAC.

Originality/value

First, existing studies do not address the impact of SACs on innovation from the perspective of SACs, who have most influence the firm's decision-making. Focusing on the SAC's decision-making style has sufficient practical implications for future corporate innovation planning. This study used the natural language processing (NLP) module in ChatGPT to analyze the culture of cooperation in corporate annual reports. Currently, corporate culture is an obstacle to the study of corporate governance because of its obscurity and difficulty of quantification. The authors adopted a PSM (propensity score matching) approach to eliminate the endogeneity of the data, which makes the results more scientific.

Abstract

Purpose

While the importance of supply chain learning (SCL) is widely recognized by both academia and industry, the mechanisms through which SCL is developed and its effects on environmental performance remain insufficiently understood. This study conceptualizes and empirically investigates the role of relational capital and information technology (IT) in enhancing SCL and improving environmental performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on socio-technical system theory (STS) and a knowledge-based view, this research employs structural equation modeling to test the proposed model, utilizing survey data collected from Chinese manufacturing companies.

Findings

The results demonstrate that relational capital with supplier and customer significantly enhances both supplier and customer learning. While IT does not directly impact supplier and customer learning, it exerts an indirect influence through its positive effect on relational capital. In other words, relational capital mediates the relationship between IT and supplier and customer learning. Additionally, this study finds that both supplier and customer learning enhance environmental performance.

Practical implications

This study provides actionable insights for managers, emphasizing the importance of relational capital in fostering SCL and improving environmental performance. By understanding these relationships, managers can develop more effective strategies for leveraging SCL as a tool for sustainability.

Originality/value

This study adds to the existing body of knowledge in supply chain management by offering a more nuanced and holistic model to explain how relational capital, IT and SCL interact to influence environmental performance, particularly within the context of Chinese manufacturing companies.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital inclusive finance has a positive promotion effect on the development of the national economy, but little research exists on how digital inclusive finance affects high-quality consumption in economically developed regions. Therefore, to fill the gap, this paper aims to study the impact of digital inclusive finance on high-quality consumption development using the economically developed regions of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai as examples.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the entropy method is used to construct the index of high-quality consumption among residents. Then, the municipal-level data of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai from 2011 to 2020 are used to test the impact. Subsequently, the mechanism of action test and heterogeneity analysis are conducted.

Findings

The results show that digital inclusive finance has a positive role in promoting the high-quality consumption of residents in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. At the same time, digital inclusive finance can promote high-quality consumption through its own digital payment and internet insurance channels. There is regional heterogeneity in the impact.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine whether and how digital inclusive finance affects high-quality consumption. The authors consider multiple dimensions, such as consumption level, consumption structure, consumption ability, consumption environment and consumption mode, to measure high-quality consumption. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, investors and regulators in planning regulations.

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the evolution of the electric vehicles (EVs) supply chain eco-system from the lens of economy, enterprises, environment and strategy. The paper highlights the opportunities and gaps in the supply chains of EVs and further explores the evolution of the EV supply chain in the context of Asia, and other developing regions, which are transitioning towards sustainable consumption practices.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a literature review triangulated with primary research, specifically focusing on the case study of two focal organizations and associated frameworks in the domain of electric mobility, investigating the change led by electric mobility supply chain dynamics and how it has transformed the underlying supply chain ecosystem.

Findings

To this end, the paper presents key opportunities and challenges posed in the EV ecosystem, presenting a comprehensive framework of transitioning from internal combustion engines-based vehicles to EVs. The paper also presents a worldwide analysis of the economic and technological readiness of the countries in EVs domain. The paper also presents an EV market classification framework based on geopolitical factors.

Research limitations/implications

The paper opens horizons for further empirical studies (quantitative or qualitative) to understand the nuances of electric mobility.

Practical implications

The paper also presents implications for practicing managers in the domain of the electric supply chain to better understand the ecosystem, opportunities and mitigate challenges posed by this disruptive technology.

Originality/value

With the world working towards a zero-carbon future, understanding the challenges and opportunities in this field is important to support this global shift. The paper presents and an original and novel understanding of the EV supply chain ecosystem.
