Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the influence of inventors’ abilities to acquire external knowledge, provide broad and professional knowledge and patenting output (i.e. different types of inventors) on the formation of structural holes.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected 59,798 patents applied for and granted in the USA by 33 of the largest firms worldwide in the pharmaceutical industry between 1975 and 2014. A random-effects tobit model was used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The inventors’ ability to acquire external knowledge contributes to the formation of structural holes. While inventors’ ability to provide broad knowledge positively affects the formation of structural holes, their ability to provide professional knowledge works otherwise. In addition, key inventors and industrious inventors are more likely to form structural holes than talents.
Originality/value
The results identify individual factors that affect the formation of structural holes and improve the understanding of structural hole theory. This study is unique in that most scholars have studied the consequences of structural hole formation rather than their antecedents. Studies on the origin of structural holes neglect the effect of inventors’ knowledge abilities and patenting output. By addressing this gap, this study contributes to a more comprehensive theoretical understanding of structural holes. The results can guide managers in managing structural holes in accordance with inventors’ knowledge abilities and patenting outputs, which optimize the allocation of network resources.

Abstract
Purpose
Small talk, often regarded as a superficial interaction unrelated to work, is a pervasive and inescapable aspect of daily life and professional settings. In China, where the notion of guanxi – the cultivation of strategic relationships – is deeply valued, workplace small talk (WST) is a strategic tool used by employees to strengthen their interpersonal networks. This study aims to investigate the positive impact of WST on task performance within the Chinese workplace and explores the mechanisms underpinning this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
This study adopted a time-lagged research design to test its hypotheses using data from 516 employees across various Chinese firms.
Findings
This study revealed that WST exerts both direct and indirect positive effects on task performance. It boosts task performance indirectly via two mediators: relational energy and positive affect. This study also delineated a chain mediation model wherein WST sequentially elevates task performance by first enhancing relational energy and then fostering positive affect.
Originality/value
Counter to the prevailing focus on the negative repercussions of WST, this study sheds light on its beneficial outcomes, proposing novel pathways connecting WST to task performance. These insights contribute to both academic discourse and the development of practical management strategies.

Abstract
Purpose
Staff in secure mental health-care settings face unique occupational challenges that may conflict with their personal or professional moral code. Initial research has established the presence of moral injury in this population, though insight into the specific sources and driving factors at the root of this syndrome is limited. The purpose of this study was to identify potentially morally injurious events and associated risk factors for secure mental healthcare staff.
Design/methodology/approach
To address this gap, a three-round expert Delphi survey was conducted to gain consensus on the conceptualisation, types and drivers of potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) for secure mental health-care workers. Health-care professionals and academics in the field were recruited.
Findings
A high level of consensus (= 80%) was achieved on several sources of moral injury, which related to aspects of the health-care system, the secure context, relational dynamics and individual practices, behaviours and attitudes. Experts also agreed on several items relating to the definition of a PMIE, the factors driving the occurrence of PMIEs and the factors increasing risk for the subsequent development of moral injury.
Practical implications
The findings suggest that current definitions of PMIEs may, in isolation, be too narrow, prompting the need to attend to the broad range of PMIEs experienced by secure mental health-care staff. In addition, recommendations for the primary and secondary prevention of moral injury in secure mental health-care staff are offered, recognising the particular need for intervention at a systemic level.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to consider the range of sources of moral injury faced by staff providing for people with complex forensic and mental health needs.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to ascertain which competences are seen by employers as important for accounting students in an emerging economy, to triangulate this list with the experiences of working students and compare with those work competencies acquired during the period of study.
Design/methodology/approach
This study employs a novel mixed-method approach, with interviews of employers (n = 11) to identify key work competencies, and then with a quantitative study of working students (n = 184) to examine the work competency gap, using paired T-tests and mean weight discrepancy scores. The study was undertaken between September and December 2022.
Findings
The paper provides empirical insights into key work competencies in an emerging economy. There is a focus on technical skills at the university, whilst soft skills are preferred by employers. New key work competencies were uncovered relating to intuition, innovation and communicating in a foreign language. The key personal characteristics required for the job relate to change and uncertainty.
Research limitations/implications
A qualitative assessment of key work competencies of employers and the use of mean weighted discrepancy scores is recommended in further studies in this field.
Practical implications
Practical approaches for educators, government and employers are offered to address the increasing demand for soft skills and other work competencies specific to an emerging economy.
Originality/value
The study is set in an emerging economy, which is underdeveloped in this field. The findings inform key stakeholders with a vested interest in reducing the work competency gap.

Purpose
Since youngsters are being extensively engaged with digital devices these days, integrating digital technologies into food and nutrition education programs, stands out as a viable method. The current systematic review aimed to assess the available literature on the effectiveness of digital edutainment games on nutrition behavior of school-going children.
Design/methodology/approach
From the earliest date available until September 30, 2023, a comprehensive search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Lilacs, Science Direct, Web of Science and Google Scholar to identify relevant articles. Only randomized controlled studies were included in the review. Seven full-text publications that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were subjected to additional data extraction processing.
Findings
Children’s dietary behavior was found to be improved by playing digital games because they are entertaining and pleasurable. The majority of the studies' favored game type was game-based simulations. In terms of pedagogical role, all the studies were independent and not complementary to traditional conventional classroom lectures.
Research limitations/implications
Based on the results, digital educational games show promising results in terms of acceptability and early impacts on reducing sugar intake and enhancing dietary habits in school-age children. However, it is necessary to conduct more research to determine the essential elements of these games, their duration of usefulness and their generalizability.
Originality/value
This review contributes to the researchers and academicians by providing relevant information regarding effectiveness of digital edutainment games on nutrition behavior of school-going children. This is the first systematic review conducted to assess the effectiveness of digital edutainment games on nutrition behavior of school-going children.

Abstract
Purpose
Healthcare organizations are rethinking their practices in response to the framework provided by the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The purpose of this paper is to explore whether, how and why sustainable development practices have been implemented in the healthcare sector.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is based on a systematic literature review, carried out using Scopus and Web of Science databases. The papers were analyzed according to the five activity-based theoretical framework categories: purpose, subject, community, object and practices.
Findings
Results reveal a lack of research regarding the integration of sustainable development and SDGs into managerial systems or functions. Moreover, they identify key areas of interest within sustainable development and healthcare practices, offering guidance for future research and strategies to better align healthcare with the SDGs.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper that aims to summarize the scientific literature on this topic through the lens of the activity-based theoretical framework, allowing for an analysis of the literature that investigates how sustainable development practices shape organizational life.

Purpose
Based on the well-known risks associated with deviating from established routines in primary healthcare and the positive consequences of upholding them, the purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the role of meaningfulness in the enactment of organizational routines.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is based on 24 semi-structured interviews with three different professional categories in primary healthcare in Sweden. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis on a latent level, combined with a two-factor model as sensitizing concepts.
Findings
Differences are identified between factors that reduce meaninglessness (called “sufficiency factors”) and those that enable meaningfulness (called “meaningfulness factors”). Nine sufficiency factors and six meaningfulness factors explain what makes organizational routines perceived as meaningful by the different professional groups. A two-factor matrix is developed that highlights the intricate challenges associated with routine enactment based on these factors.
Originality/value
The study is unique in that it is the first to integrate research on organizational routines and meaningfulness. However, understanding meaningful organizational routines is not only essential because it is an overlooked area in both of these two streams of research but also because of its clear, practical relevance in the primary healthcare setting.

Abstract
Purpose
As fitness apps have integrated gamification elements into their design to transform exercise into a compelling and competitive experience, this study draws on the expectation confirmation model (ECM) and self-determination theory (SDT) to propose a comprehensive framework for sustained usage by satisfying the psychological needs of users.
Design/methodology/approach
A longitudinal study design is utilized where data from 598 fitness app users were gathered over two distinct phases separated by 24 weeks, where data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The findings until phase 1 depict that motivational affordances significantly affect mastery, autonomy and relatedness, which in turn exert a significant influence on flow. Identification and compliance have a more pronounced effect in phase 2 compared to stage 1 of the analysis.
Research limitations/implications
Individuals are more prone to being swayed by fellow members of their social group who share an affiliation with fitness apps, leading them to sustain their usage of fitness apps. These insights can potentially guide app developers and marketers in formulating strategies based on modifiable factors to foster sustained growth for gamified fitness apps.
Originality/value
This study takes a novel stance by employing social impact theory (SIT) in a longitudinal setting to reveal how users react to identification and compliance effects during initial and post-adoption usage of gamified fitness apps.

Abstract
Purpose
The objective of the research is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the conceptual structure underlying global trends in the utilization of VR/AR for learning purposes among autistic children and adolescents.
Design/methodology/approach
With a sample of 57 documents obtained from different databases in the period 2010–2022, a scientific mapping was developed using the bibliometrix library designed in R.
Findings
It has been found that there are three main lines of work. The first with VR/AR with emotion recognition and theory of mind. Another line focused on “young children” that works on visual attention, simulation play and social communication. The third line is focused on adolescents with subthemes such as executive function, attention, social skills and learning environments.
Originality/value
The research allows the authors to design activities in those areas where the use of VR/AR has been successful. In this way, future implementation of these tools in the classroom is encouraged.
