Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the lived experiences of a professional accountant, exploring how he navigated the complexity of change in specific accounting processes in the UK housing association (HA). Using an autoethnographic approach, the authors seek to relate individual and collective insights into the changing of social housing organisational processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This autoethnographic account draws on participant and participant-observer reflections, as well as several materials maintained by the professional accountant, from a turbulent period in UK social housing. These data are analysed abductively, where the HA was perceived to be a constellation of ritual activities that underpinned a working community.

Findings

The professional accountant, who is one of the authors, sought to transform HA’s finance function to be “World-class”. Among others, allegedly outdated accounting processes in the HA seemed to require radical change to enable quicker yet more financially substantiated decision-making. Office rituals facilitated the associated accounting process changes by drawing on camaraderie and team/family bonding, which became amenable to new (accounting) rituals. However, the change process was complex and may well have undermined the existing camaraderie in the finance team. The paper reflects on this, with the professional accountant looking back on his actions within the HA after he had left the HA and had entered academia.

Originality/value

This study demonstrates the potential of autoethnographic reflections in accounting research when accounting is seen as ritualised activity. Hence, abductively, the reflection is theorised through the notion of “ritual” and its antecedent, “liminality”. This autoethnographic narrative may serve as an aid for others who may also face turbulent periods which require navigating change, while they experience personal struggles relating to this change.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper introduces and develops a conceptual model, “organizational job crafting,” to extend and apply job crafting theory to precarious workers.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual model incorporates the perspectives of organizational justice theory into job crafting theory to identify precarious workers’ unique job crafting motivation and processes in their work environment. The theory is developed by integrating and adjusting aspects of these two approaches.

Findings

This model invokes five propositions specifying (1) the impacts of organizational justice on individual motivations for job crafting, (2) the conditions for developing a shared perception of organizational justice, (3) the forms of organizational job crafting and (4) the individual and organizational effects of job crafting. Moderating conditions are identified, such as the level of connection to labor/community organizations.

Originality/value

This study extends established job crafting theory, enriching it by incorporating the precarious worker perspective. By connecting job crafting to organizational justice theories, this model opens the possibility that workers’ job crafting can produce not only personal enrichment or work efficiency but also contribute to organizational changes. The theoretical development handles issues blocked or hidden by the original constituent theoretical ingredients.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the main motives for senior individuals in the Peruvian context to actively engage in entrepreneurial activities. The second purpose of this study is to identify the main challenges those senior entrepreneurs face.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical data is collected through an ethnographic study followed by semi-structured interviews with a sample of 32 senior entrepreneurs working in Peru. The team members used the Gioia mechanism to analyze their data.

Findings

The authors identified the following factors as the main motives for seniors to actively engage in entrepreneurial activities in Peru: socio-economic factors (finding a source of income, creating jobs for their children and continuing to financially support their families), personal factors (considerable level of wisdom, leaving a good legacy and having the entrepreneurial requirements) and retirement-related factors (available time, the longevity of Peruvians and guaranteed familial support). Moreover, the authors perceived the uncertainty of the work environment and technological illiteracy as the two main challenges senior entrepreneurs face in Peru.

Originality/value

This paper comes to be the first, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, in addressing self-employment of seniors in the context of Latin America. Hence, it yields further research opportunities for interested scholars.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the gender perceptions of members within women’s NGOs in Türkiye, highlighting the persistence of patriarchal values despite the rise in these organizations. The study provides insights into the influence of socio-political factors and demographic variables on gender attitudes within these organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

The research utilized a survey conducted among 735 members of women’s NGOs in Istanbul and Ankara, gathering quantitative data on their attitudes toward gender inequality. The study employs a gender inequality index, supplemented with demographic and personal factors like age, marital status, education, political ideology and religiosity.

Findings

Findings reveal that members of women’s NGOs often exhibit gender-inequitable attitudes, influenced by factors such as age, religiosity, political ideology and education. Contrary to expectations, these NGOs do not uniformly promote feminist values, and gender inequity is deeply entrenched within the organizational culture.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited by its focus on two major cities, which may not reflect the experiences of NGO members in other regions of Türkiye. The findings underscore the necessity to address structural constraints within women’s NGOs to promote genuine gender equality.

Practical Implications

This research suggests the need for critical awareness and capacity-building within women’s NGOs in Türkiye. Policymakers and organizational leaders can use these insights to develop targeted interventions that enhance gender consciousness and challenge patriarchal norms in civil society.

Originality/value

This study provides a novel exploration of gender attitudes within women’s NGOs in Türkiye, challenging the assumption that such organizations inherently promote feminist ideals. By combining empirical data with a socio-political analysis, the research reveals how entrenched patriarchal values persist within organizations that advocate for gender equality. This work contributes to understanding the complexities and contradictions in civil society’s role in gender politics, offering valuable insights for scholars and practitioners interested in gender, civil society and socio-political dynamics in Türkiye.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the practices, processes and expertise embedded within Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) distinctively mediate the tensions between outcome payers’ competing and contradictory programmatic discourses.

Design/methodology/approach

We use qualitative research methods and employ concepts drawn from the governmentality literature to analyse interviews with SIB outcome payers.

Findings

SIBs are shown to challenge the degree of negative influence of biopolitics, neoliberalism and financialization by highlighting a broader and more holistic set of influences. SIB operations pre-empt and counteract perceived risks and are refined through a “learning by doing” effect. In contrast to other approaches to funding social interventions, the SIB structure attributes and independently validates outcomes. Payments to investors are based on the achievement of outcomes and are funded by the outcome payers. SIBs’ operational processes allow the responsibilities of the various parties to be explicitly assigned and contracted. The interests are aligned, yet the cultural differences harnessed.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first to apply governmentality concepts to SIBs. By focusing on outcome payers, the paper provides new perspectives on the practices, processes and expertise of governing and the programmatic discourses of governing, as well as their relationship. The insights offered are supported by one of the largest and most diverse empirical SIB samples including 34 interviews where 43 individuals reflect on their experiences across 32 unique outcome payer organisations.

Abstract

Purpose

The significance of organizational culture (OC) pervades all workplaces, extending even to health systems. While numerous studies have examined the perceptions of OC among nurses and physicians, there is a notable gap in understanding the perspectives of non-patient-facing health system employees. This study aims to fill this void by investigating the perceptions and drivers of OC among non-patient-facing personnel within health systems.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed a mixed-methods approach, starting with a 31-question survey disseminated to health system employees through trade organizations to capture diverse perspectives on OC. Subsequently, employees were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. A total of 23 interviews were conducted to explore the underlying factors shaping employees’ perceptions of OC.

Findings

A total of 67 surveys were completed, with 61 used in the analysis. The results revealed a predominantly positive outlook, highlighting the significance of supportive leadership and involvement in decision-making processes. The qualitative analysis identified four key themes: effective communication and transparency, coordinated teamwork, supportive leadership and the impact of external factors like the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Practical implications

Effective leadership should prioritize open communication, employee autonomy and involvement in decision-making. These strategies foster a culture of trust, accountability and engagement, enhancing employee morale and job satisfaction while promoting a collaborative and innovative work environment conducive to long-term success and growth.

Originality/value

This research examines the often-overlooked perspectives of non-patient-facing health system staff, providing valuable insights and strategies for leaders to improve OC and create a more positive, inclusive and supportive work environment.

Abstract

Purpose

India's Muslim women (MW) face significant underrepresentation within the government and commercial sectors, rendering them virtually invisible in the job market. This underrepresentation is compounded by the double stigma of being both Muslim and female. As a result, this study aims to address this critical issue by looking into MW's intention to work in the industry of tourism and hospitality (T&H).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted online to gather data and 404 of the responses met the requirements for selection. The research model was empirically assessed by applying structural equation modelling. The data collection phase spanned from August 11, 2023, to November 10, 2023.

Findings

The study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the extended theory of planned behaviour in providing a robust model for analysing MW's intentions to participate in the T&H industry.

Research limitations/implications

This research discloses inclusive policies, reduces discrimination, empowers women in the workforce, improves educational opportunities, promotes cultural sensitivity and fosters inclusive leadership in the T&H industry, focusing on MW career intentions, to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality).

Originality/value

The importance of this study is contingent upon its ability to inform policymakers in academia and the T&H sector. By recognising and addressing the barriers faced by MW, it has the potential to foster a workplace environment that promotes equality and eliminates discrimination, ultimately improving the image of the T&H industry and harnessing the untapped potential of these women in India.

Purpose

Women often face multiple challenges when they are involved in the business. Their situation is even more complex in the family business setting, where multiple family and non-family stakeholders may challenge their legitimacy as a business leader. However, while some women remain invisible, others are able to become legitimate leaders in the family business. This study explores the circumstances that enable women to become legitimate and successful leaders in family businesses embedded in patriarchal contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering that our research question is aimed at exploring the determinants of legitimacy of women in the family business, we employed a qualitative research approach using multiple case studies. Data were collected through interviews, secondary sources (internal documents and websites), conversations and observations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted separately with three or four respondents from each firm.

Findings

This study finds that women can have a legitimate “professional” role when they are involved in the business early, when they have outside work experience, when they are provided with equal opportunities for learning and development compared to their male siblings and when they are provided with adequate mentoring opportunities from women role models.

Originality/value

This study makes several contributions to the study of gender dynamics in family businesses by unpacking the determinants of women’s legitimacy as leaders in family businesses. This paper also expands on the typologies that Curimbaba (2002) provides, while the typology identifies the different roles that women can play in a family business (i.e. invisible, anchors or professionals), it does not clearly delineate why some women are considered legitimate professional leaders, while others are treated as invisible or anchors. Additionally, this study offers novel insights coming from a patriarchal non-developed context, Colombia.
