Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore which relational factors are crucial for accelerator-based start-ups to achieve high financial performance and whether innovation levels influence this relationship. Utilizing fsQCA and drawing from the resource-based view (RBV), we analyze 128 start-ups in a Spanish accelerator, split by innovativeness, to understand the impact of relational and human capital factors on performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate conditions leading to high financial performance among 128 start-ups in a Spanish accelerator, divided by innovativeness. Four key factors are analyzed: social capital, social competence, resource mobilization and entrepreneurial ecosystem support. fsQCA examines complex relationships between these factors and financial performance.

Findings

Relational and human capital factors significantly impact start-up financial performance, varying with innovativeness. Highly innovative start-ups benefit from social competence and networked support, while less innovative but profitable start-ups rely on resource mobilization skills. The study highlights the contingent value of these factors, showing that unique configurations drive financial success.

Research limitations/implications

The paper enhances the RBV in entrepreneurial contexts by highlighting the critical role of relational resources and their configurations. It suggests social competence and networked support are crucial for highly innovative start-ups, while resource mobilization is key for less innovative ones. These findings encourage nuanced theorizing of start-up success strategies, considering varying innovativeness levels and their impact on performance.

Originality/value

This study enhances understanding of the relationship between relational factors and financial performance in accelerator-based start-ups, considering innovation levels. It provides insights into how different configurations of social capital, competence, resource mobilization and ecosystem support lead to success. It underscores the importance of considering the contingent value of relational factors for start-up growth.

Abstract

Purpose

Even though the pandemic years resulted in a significant increase in massive open online courses (MOOCs), there are still countries where penetration is low. The rejection of MOOCs can inhibit individual and societal advancements. The purpose of this study is to explore what is behind the resistance to MOOCs in these regions. Using the theoretical framework of innovation resistance theory, it defines the factors that inhibit the adoption of MOOCs.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based on two studies. In the first study, in-depth interviews were used to explore factors that may cause barriers to adoption. Following the results of the first phase, a survey was conducted to investigate resistance to MOOCs, including both users and nonusers of such platforms.

Findings

Structural equation modeling revealed the presence of functional and psychological barriers, with the most significant being usage and value-related barriers. The lack of information and the need for interaction were identified as the main factors contributing to these barriers.

Originality/value

The results help increase the acceptance and effective integration of MOOCs into different educational environments, especially in countries with high resistance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to explore and critique the benefits and disbenefits that transport orientated development (TOD) brings to neighbourhoods in proximity to public transport hubs.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an exploratory study that may also be described as a rapid review that aims to provide coverage of the available literature in a systematic process that is simplified to produce information in a timely manner. Due to the relatively small number of available studies from peer-reviewed sources, the variety of methods and data used and the constrained time available for this study, the study did not immediately lend itself to a more thorough systematic literature review.

Findings

The literature shows the discourse on TOD upholds its promise to create a high-density mixed-use walkable neighbourhood supported by transport infrastructure, increasing accessibility, minimising vehicle dependency, reducing traffic congestion, moderating urban sprawl and reducing pollution. There are few articles on the negative aspects of TOD, particularly concerning social exclusion, crime, sustainability and concerns about gentrification of neighbourhoods.

Research limitations/implications

The study did not immediately lend itself to a more thorough systematic literature review due to the relatively small number of available studies, the variety of methods and data used and the constrained time available for this study.

Originality/value

This study allows social investigators, policymakers and developers understand the benefits and disbenefits of TOD including policy implications regarding potential criminogenic factors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to revisit the conventional wisdom about a key contribution [i.e. strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis] in the field of strategic management. The societal context and the role of academics, consultants and executives is taken into account in the emergence of SWOT analysis during the 1960–1980 period as a pivotal development within the broader context of the satisfactory, opportunities, faults, threats (SOFT) approach. The authors report on both the content and the approach, so that other scholars seeking to invigorate indigenous theories and/or underreported strategy practices will thrive.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying a historiographic approach, the authors introduce an evidence-based methodology for interpreting historical sources. This methodology incorporates source criticism, triangulation and hermeneutical interpretation, drawing upon insights from robust evidence through three iterative stages.

Findings

The underreporting of the SOFT approach/SWOT analysis can be attributed to several factors, including strategy tools being integrated into planning frameworks rather than being published as standalone materials; restricted circulation of crucial long-range planning service/theory and practice of planning reports due to copyright limitations; restricted access to the Stanford Research Institute Planning Library in California; and the enduring popularity of SOFT and SWOT variations, driven in part by their memorable acronyms.

Originality

In the spirit of a renaissance in strategic planning research, the authors unveil novel theoretical and social connections in the emergence of SWOT analysis by combining evidence from both theory and practice and delving into previously unexplored areas.

Research implications

Caution is advised for scholars who examine the discrete time frame of 1960–1980 through mere bibliometric techniques. This study underscores the risks associated with gathering incomplete and/or inaccurate data, emphasizing the importance of triangulating evidence beyond scholarly databases. The paradigm shift of strategic management research due to the advent of large language models poses new challenges and the risk of conserving and perpetuating academic urban legends, myths and lies if training data is not adequately curated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a systematic literature review on contemporary women-centric accounting research through the lens of gender diversity, equity and inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors reviewed 210 papers published in 44 accounting journals between 2015 and 2023, using a modified version of Shields (1997) framework that profiles a detailed analysis of gender accounting topics across research settings, sample settings, jurisdiction, theories, research methods and data analysis techniques.

Findings

The review highlights an imbalance in research attention, with a predominant focus on gender diversity in governance, followed by gender equity, leaving gender inclusion relatively underexplored. The studies show notable progress in gender diversity within corporate leadership, demonstrating its positive impact on performance, audit quality, reporting and environmental, social and governance considerations. Nonetheless, women in the accounting profession continue to face challenges to equitable opportunities and inclusion, predominantly driven by gender stereotypes, patriarchal systems and motherhood impacts.

Practical implications

This research offers valuable insights that extend beyond academia, with practical implications for policy and corporate practice. The findings highlight the pressing need to reassess corporate cultures that devalue feminine occupational norms and inclusivity, particularly for women balancing family responsibilities. The authors recommend that firms go beyond increasing gender representation to actively address challenges and adopt policies that foster a genuine equitable and inclusive workplace in accounting.

Originality/value

This research adds to the current gender accounting dialogue by providing an in-depth profiling analysis of existing studies. The authors highlight often-overlooked barriers to gender equity and inclusion, emphasising the need to address them to fully realise the benefits of gender diversity at workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

UK care leavers are among society’s most vulnerable groups and were badly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of the crisis on thier daily functioning, relationships and mental health. The primary focus was the coproduction of key messages from care leavers: to services, to facilitate the provision of relevant, accessible post-lockdown support and to their peers, to encourage positive post-lockdown readjustment.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 134 UK care leavers, aged 18–25, responded to an online survey, then 14 care leavers, recruited via local authorities in the South of England, participated in online care leaver expert working groups (CLEWGs) to build on survey findings, draft messages and outputs and disseminate findings at local and national events. The care-experienced Young Person’s Advisory Group of a UK national charity for care leavers (Become) was involved throughout.

Findings

Survey results and CLEWG discussions showed major impacts on care leavers’ well-being, daily lives and connectedness. Mental health was identified as the primary post-lockdown support need. CLEWGs recommended peer support to help rebuild confidence and encourage help-seeking post-lockdown. Participants called for social care professionals, especially personal advisors, to be proactive and to offer personalised, flexible, genuine support. The primary message to peers was to “ask for help if you need it”, but several barriers were identified.

Originality/value

The messages to services and care leavers come directly from care leavers, based on personal experience, and should provide valuable building blocks for the development of relevant and accessible post-pandemic support.

Abstract

Purpose

The ageing and disabled population is fast growing, which emphasises the need to effectively modify current homes and environments to support healthy ageing and increasingly diverse health needs. This paper aims to bring together findings and analyses from three adaptations-focussed projects, drawing on perspectives from key stakeholders alongside the lived experiences of service users acquiring adaptations.

Design/methodology/approach

Following an Adaptations Framework developed from interviews and focus groups with older people and key stakeholders, the paper discusses barriers experienced by older people and front-line workers in receiving and delivering adaptations through all stages of the process.

Findings

This paper reveals how experiences around adaptations might diverge with unseen, hidden investment and need amongst individuals, and how conceptual and cost-focussed evidence gaps impact wider understandings of adaptations delivery. In so doing, this paper highlights how the adaptations process is perceived as a “fight” that does not work smoothly for either those delivering or receiving adaptations services.

Research limitations/implications

The paper suggests a systematic failure such that the adaptations process needs to be rehauled, reset and prioritised within social and public policy if the housing, health and social care sectors are to support healthy ageing and prepare for the future ageing population.

Originality/value

The paper brings together insights from key stakeholders alongside service users' experiences of adaptations to highlight key policy drivers and barriers to accessing and delivering adaptations.

Abstract

Purpose

The research objective is rooted in the principle of providing new insights and a collective perspective regarded as Supply Chain Quality Management 4.0 (SCQM4.0), an integration of all three concepts – Industrie 4.0, quality management and supply chain management.

Design/methodology/approach

A thorough review of historical developments and existing integration trends among Industrie 4.0, quality and supply chain approaches along with future research directions outlined in the main literature, was conducted. This work establishes a knowledge base on research topics, issues of integration and synergies with a concentration on the potential for deeper integration with supply chain operations.

Findings

This article not only introduced the term SCQM4.0 and proposed a definition for it, but also contributed a novel conceptual SCQM4.0 framework and evolutionary perspective through the SCQM4.0 maturation model. Stemming from the gaps, opportunities and benefits identified in the literature, the conceptual SCQM4.0 framework builds on the high potential of the SCQM4.0 constructs to achieve successful governance and implementation. Under the SCQM4.0 maturity framework, it provides a clear evolutionary path underpinned by the SCQM4.0 constructs.

Research limitations/implications

In the effort toward a successful SCQM4.0 implementation, the proposed SCQM4.0 maturity frameworks will be a “road map” for businesses to develop fully and actively in supply chain operations, bringing quality products and services for the company. Industry practitioners are encouraged to perform gap analysis and direct the implementation of the strategy to establish an excellent SCQM4.0.

Originality/value

This is one of the pioneering studies integrating all three concepts (Industrie 4.0, quality management and supply chain management), connecting the link and discovering more synergies to support the future development of more holistic management models. SCQM4.0 is expected to expand on the strengths, synergies and established relationships between technologies 4.0, quality and supply chain, contributing toward a pioneering and quality supply chain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to incorporate the Good Lives Model (GLM) into the pathway for an adult low secure learning disability service and the community forensic team with an adapted approach. The GLM is a strengths-based, holistic approach to offender treatment, developed by Tony Ward (Ward and Fortuneview, 2013). The GLM proposes that individuals commit offences in the pursuit of specific goals (primary human goods). By working with patients on developing new skills to meet these goods, the aim is that offending behaviour can be reduced.

Design/methodology/approach

To incorporate this into the whole service pathway and to meet the needs of adults with a learning disability, the original goods were condensed into four, to support patient engagement and understanding. The use of the Good Lives Model is an exciting and progressive approach to supporting adults with a learning disability, through treatment and back into the community and beyond.

Findings

This has been effectively implemented, as standard practice, in this study’s inpatient service with the community forensic team currently interweaving into their processes. Feedback has been largely positive, with colleagues praising the clear structure which supports collaborative multi-disciplinary team, and patient working. Patients have said that it helps them to think about what they want. They feel like they have a voice in their care as well as looking towards the future.

Practical implications

This study supports the adaptation of the Good Lives Model into learning disability services.

Originality/value

This is a unique approach to using the Good Lives Model as a whole service pathway, in collaboration with patients with learning disabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The entrepreneurial intention of employees refers to the motive of those who work in a company to resign and start their businesses instead of continuing to be wage earners. It is one of the under-studied aspects of entrepreneurship research. Accordingly, this research paper aimed to find out whether perceived person–organization fit was related to the entrepreneurial intentions of employees and whether perceived workplace ostracism and loneliness mediated this process.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted to achieve the purpose. The data were collected through a questionnaire technique from a total of 572 employees. Participants were from 20 different provinces of Turkey and 27 different sectors. Hypotheses were tested through the structural equation modeling technique.

Findings

Findings indicated that a lack of perceived person–organization fit resulted in entrepreneurial intention. Workplace ostracism resulted in workplace loneliness. Workplace ostracism and loneliness significantly mediated the relationship between perceived person–organization fit and entrepreneurial intention.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, this study was the first to establish and test the relationships between person–organization fit, entrepreneurial intention, workplace ostracism and loneliness. In this regard, findings can benefit researchers and practitioners in better figuring out why some employees leave their companies to start their businesses while others do not.
