Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address the macroeconomic factors effect on the travel and leisure (T&L) industry throughout Europe within the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war that have started on 24 February 2022. Specifically, top tourist destinations are analysed, such as Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, as well as Europe in general.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adopts the panel regression approach based on the data that is provided on a daily basis, and it covers a period of nearly 14 months, starting on 24 February 2022 and ending on 15 April 2023.

Findings

The findings indicate that the European T&L sector is impacted by macroeconomic variables. Namely, the T&L sector is significantly impacted by interest rates, geopolitical risk, oil and gas, whereas inflation has a muted effect, indicating a comparatively lesser influence on the dynamics of the industry. This research contributes to existing literature by providing one of the first quantitative analyses of how macroeconomic factors impact the European T&L business in the context of a geopolitical conflict.

Research limitations/implications

A study of the Russian–Ukrainian war may be limited by a number of research constraints. The continuing nature of the conflict, the lack of communication between the parties and potential political prejudice are some of these difficulties. Any research on the Russo-Ukrainian war should be done with these limits in mind.

Practical implications

Macroeconomic variables play a significant role on the T&L sector development; therefore, when designing resilience strategies, they need to be accounted for.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to analyse how macroeconomic factors affected the European T&L business using a quantitative approach. The macroeconomic variables that were taken into account in this study included interest rates, inflation, oil and petrol prices, as well as the geopolitical risk index.

实际影响

宏观经济变数在运输和物流行业发展中起着重要作用, 因此, 在设计弹性策略时, 需要考虑它们。

Finalidad

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a model that expands the technology acceptance model (TAM) by identifying aspects that influence consumers’ attitude and behavioral intention toward chatbots in the beauty care industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on an online questionnaire responded by 211 Generation Z individuals from Morocco. Data was collected based on a convenience nonprobability sampling technique, and a partial least squares-structural equation modeling was used to validate the model and test the hypotheses.

Findings

Perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and subjective norms are significant influencers of the attitude toward chatbot. Perceived risk was not found to be influencing behavioral intention to use chatbot, and personality does not moderate the relationship between perceived ease of use and attitude.

Research limitations/implications

This paper provides insights into the motives behind customers’ attitude and behavior toward chatbots in the beauty care industry and can be relied on as a guideline for implementations technology to boost sales and build strong relationship with customers.

Practical implications

This research provides new insight for retailers on the implementation of chatbots at the point of sale. Marketers and business owners should be aware of the usefulness and ease of use of technology for Generation Z and be able to interact with them on this basis in order to generate increased economic performance and better brand image.

Originality/value

The model extends the original TAM and introduces two new constructs, subjective norms and perceived risk, in addition to including personality as a moderating factor. The data was gathered from the under-studied region of North Africa.

Abstract

Purpose

Apartments have become a representative urban housing type for mass housing construction; therefore, interest in low-rise residential areas has decreased. Low-rise residential areas have proved to be a poor residential environment for all aspects of life because of the density of the old buildings. Using the Moa Towns project as a case study, this research explores the steps for revitalizing low-rise residential environments, emphasizing communities.

Design/methodology/approach

The study first investigated the historical changes in urban housing types in Korea. Through a review of the related literature, a systematic analysis framework was developed. The residential environments of the case study and the questionnaire survey were analyzed through the framework, with a focus on the quality of housing.

Findings

To improve the quality of housing for residents, a housing plan is needed to ensure safety and comfort. To establish an accessible residential environment infrastructure, improve the quality of housing, and encourage social relationships between neighbors, community facilities within a 15-min walk should be installed. To increase interaction between neighbors, a circular pedestrian system can be created by establishing a community street.

Originality/value

This study is significant in that it focuses on people in revitalizing the community; identifies factors for physical improvement, exchange activities, and facility support; and presents a conceptual framework for building a residential environment in low-rise residential areas. The results are critical to the quality of housing and community facilities for low-rise residential development.

Abstract

Purpose

Using surveys of Amazon and Tmall Global users, this paper aims to empirically investigate the issue of platform technological selection. We explore the impact of switching costs on users’ intentions to use an app-enabled cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) platform based on an extended technology acceptance model (TAM). The results suggest that the higher the switching cost of a platform is, the greater the users’ satisfaction and intention to use this platform. Therefore, for the platform, a moderate switching cost will be beneficial for retaining users.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the TAM, this paper takes the switching costs as the starting point and focuses on exploring the relationships among switching costs, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived reliability, satisfaction and intention to use. Online surveys of users of Amazon and Tmall Global are adopted as the main instruments of this research. We collected a total of 408 valid responses from Amazon users and 490 from Tmall Global users. For the data analysis, this study conducts frequency analysis, a test analysis of the reliability and validity of the measures, correlation analysis, and path analysis using a structural equation model.

Findings

The results show that switching costs positively affect the users’ satisfaction and intentions to use a CBEC platform through perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and perceived reliability.

Research limitations/implications

The questionnaire respondents were predominantly Chinese due to the constraints of the survey conditions. In fact, China has a high penetration rate in CBEC, and Chinese users have rich experience using the Amazon and Tmall Global platforms.

Practical implications

The development of CBEC has ups and downs, and users frequently switch platforms. Considering how platforms can stand out from the crowd and retain users, we believe that a moderate increase in the switching cost of the platform is helpful for companies to address these problems, and the implications of the results are particularly valid for decision-makers of CBEC platforms and companies.

Social implications

Amazon and Tmall Global are the two largest CBEC platforms in the world. Using these two companies as examples for comparison can effectively identify the differences between the platforms and the conclusions are representative. We suggest that platforms can improve user satisfaction and willingness to use by establishing VIP communities, issuing coupons, providing shipping services as well as convenient after-sale complaint channels, and improving the platform’s easy-to-use interface, as ways to further enable the platform to retain more users and stand out in fierce competition.

Originality/value

This paper addresses an interesting and practical issue related to the effects of introducing switching costs in an extended TAM applied to CBEC platforms.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to consolidate existing research on digital technology in business education, focusing on adoption determinants, theoretical frameworks and implementation challenges.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid literature review was conducted. The first phase involved a keyword co-occurrence analysis of 254 Association of Business Schools-ranked journal articles from the Web of Science database to identify key research themes. To deepen the analysis, the second phase included a content analysis of the 24 most globally cited articles, each with a minimum of 65 total global citations.

Findings

The review reveals that studies primarily focus on factors influencing digital technology adoption, including institutional support, perceived usefulness and ease of use. Researchers frequently cite theoretical models such as the technology acceptance model and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology. Identified challenges include concerns over technology effectiveness, resistance to change and the influence of cultural and generational differences on technology use.

Practical implications

The findings guide educators and policymakers in formulating strategies for effective technology adoption, emphasizing alignment with educational goals and addressing cultural barriers.

Social implications

Understanding generational and cultural impacts enables the creation of inclusive digital education strategies that cater to diverse student needs.

Originality/value

This study synthesizes fragmented literature, offering new insights into the integration of digital technologies in business education.

Abstract

The contemporary global economic and business environment is witnessing significant transformations driven by disruptive frugal technological innovation. This paradigmatic shift has substantially influenced global business practices, necessitating a re-evaluation of conventional methodologies. The present study aims to explore the nuanced perspectives of key stakeholders within Angola's agricultural sector regarding the implications of disruptive frugal technological innovation. Its objective is to assess the sector's readiness to embrace such innovation while comprehending the associated challenges and opportunities. Seven prominent institutions in the agricultural sector, namely the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Institute for Agricultural Development, the Confederation of Farmer Associations and Agricultural Cooperatives of Angola, the Forum of Angolan Non-Governmental Organizations, AgroLink Angola (providers of agricultural inputs), the Institute of Agricultural Research, and Novagrolider (a leading agricultural processing and marketing entity), actively participated in this research initiative. Thirty-five (35) key informants, strategically chosen based on accessibility and willingness to engage, participated in in-depth interviews. The findings of the study reveal a spectrum of insights, shedding light on stakeholders' perceptions regarding the adoption and integration of frugal digital technologies. This research significantly contributes to the existing knowledge base by providing a comprehensive understanding of stakeholders' perceptions regarding disruptive frugal technological innovation within Angola's agricultural sector. Policymakers, researchers, and practitioners can utilize these insights to make informed decisions, formulate strategies, and implement interventions conducive to sustainable development and fostering digital transformation within the agriculture industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the effects of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) on the return of growth/value and small/large-cap stocks during expansionary and recessionary periods across a conditional distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors selected a sample covering the period between 01/1995–05/2021. Quantile regressions were applied to the EPU and Russell indices. Business cycles were established following the NBER.

Findings

The results show that EPU has a negative effect on stocks with the intensity of the effect depending on the stock's profile. Small-cap and growth stocks were found to be most sensitive to EPU, especially during recessions. The negative effect is moderated by the economic cycle but is progressively diluted at the lower tail of the stock return distribution.

Practical implications

The findings shed more light on investment strategies for growth/value investors that pursue opportunities arising from a changing economic cycle.

Originality/value

This study makes the following contributions: (1) explores the impact of EPU on the return of different stocks across a conditional distribution, and (2) provides evidence on how the economic cycle influences EPU impact on growth/value stocks and small/large stocks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of the oil crash during the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, energy and the environment in MENA countries, with and without fiscal policy, in a global context.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies a Global Vector Autoregressive (GVAR) model for 47 countries from 2006Q1 to 2021Q3. The sign restriction method is used to identify the oil shocks originating from the COVID-19 crisis.

Findings

Empirical evidence shows that without fiscal interventions, MENA countries experienced a decline in output growth, energy consumption and CO2 emissions due to lower oil prices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the oil price shock on inflation varied across the region. Economic growth and inflation rates in MENA countries turn positive when the member states implement expansionary fiscal measures to stimulate economic activities during the pandemic. Hence, fiscal policy played a crucial role in supporting the economy and preventing a severe recession during COVID-19 in the MENA region. However, expansionary fiscal measures increased energy consumption and air pollution.

Practical implications

The findings help policymakers better cope with the outbreak of deadly pandemics in the coming years. It improves our understanding of the role of fiscal policy in boosting economic efforts and reducing the adverse environmental impact of increased government spending.

Originality/value

This paper enhances the current body of literature by investigating how fiscal policies implemented by the MENA countries help mitigate the adverse economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis. Moreover, it enables us to analyze the impact of fiscal support on energy consumption and the environment during an oil shock influenced by global uncertainty, lockdowns, and supply chain disruptions.

Abstract

Purpose

In 2000, Cañibano et al. published a literature review entitled “Accounting for Intangibles: A Literature Review”. This paper revisits the conclusions drawn in that paper. We also discuss the intervening developments in scholarly research, standard setting and practice over the past 20+ years to outline the future challenges for research into accounting for intangibles.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a literature review to identify past developments and link the findings to current accounting standard-setting developments to inform our view of the future.

Findings

Current intangibles accounting practices are conservative and unlikely to change. Accounting standard setters are more interested in how companies report and disclose the value of intangibles rather than changing how they are determined. Standard setters are also interested in accounting for new forms of digital assets and reporting economic, social, governance and sustainability issues and how these link to financial outcomes. The IFRS has released complementary sustainability accounting standards for disclosing value creation in response to the latter. Therefore, the topic of intangibles stretches beyond merely how intangibles create value but how they are also part of a firm’s overall risk and value creation profile.

Practical implications

There is much room academically, practically, and from a social perspective to influence the future of accounting for intangibles. Accounting standard setters and alternative standards, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and European Union non-financial and sustainability reporting directives, are competing complementary initiatives.

Originality/value

Our results reveal a window of opportunity for accounting scholars to research and influence how intangibles and other non-financial and sustainability accounting will progress based on current developments.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the open questions is how to define a complete semantic description of an Internet of Things (IoT) system and how to ensure the device’s identification in this type of system. To answer this question, the authors needed to propose a mechanism to describe an IoT system based on an IoT context ontology description. This mechanism is based on semantic web services creation to identify objects in IoT system. This paper aims to propose a model to describe the IoT system. The authors suggest an approach to describe each category of contextual information separately and ensure the adaptation in the IoT system.
