Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to explore the integration of facets of information technology (IT) governance at a professional council in South Africa with the view to develop a framework.

Design/methodology/approach

This critical emancipatory study used the Information Governance Initiative pinwheel to explore the architecture facet of information governance at the professional council, with a view to developing a framework for entrenching a culture of good corporate governance. Qualitative data was collected through interviews and document analysis. The study was a participatory action research project that involved collaboration between the researcher and study participants in defining and solving the problem through a needs assessment exercise.

Findings

The key findings report on the processes taken by a professional council in identifying and implementing the facets of information governance, that is, records management, IT, content management, data governance, information security, data privacy, risk management, regulatory compliance, long-term digital preservation and, even, business intelligence.

Research limitations/implications

The study was a participatory action research project that involved collaboration between the researcher and study participants in defining and solving the problem through a needs assessment exercise.

Practical implications

The study’s findings suggest that, with the right information governance policy in place, adopting the facets of information governance can be used to address concerns related to information integrity in the short and medium terms. As a long-term option for retaining data and information, it would have various drawbacks and would not, however, ensure the initial dependability of the information.

Originality/value

A framework for information governance to ensure that the professional organisation and board members adopt a tailored governance system is suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of international students’ education in our V.U.C.A (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) world. It has challenged higher education institutions to deliver quality and equitable education aligned with Sustainable Development Goal no. 4. However, studies indicate that this pandemic has significantly impacted international students in terms of both policy implementation and academic experiences in online learning. Therefore, this study aims to explore the lessons learned from the online learning experience of international students studying in China during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed an online survey to explore international students’ experiences with online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Microsoft Forms, it collected 125 responses from international students studying at Project 211 universities. The survey included responses from 67 male and 58 female international students. Among these, 80 students studied online from locations outside China, while 45 participated in online learning from within China.

Findings

The study revealed that international students in China faced significant challenges during online learning, including academic disruptions, technological barriers, financial strain and psychological stress, exacerbated by time zone differences and isolation. Despite these obstacles, students demonstrated learning resilience by employing strategies such as self-regulation, peer collaboration and skill development in technology use.

Originality/value

This study addresses the existing gap in proper support for international students, particularly during times of crisis. It highlights lessons learned from the pandemic and presents mitigation strategies based on the participants’ perspectives. These strategies aim to address the learning poverty identified by the World Bank.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the interrelationships among quality and safety metrics within the Global Food Security Index (GFSI). Its primary objective is to identify key indicators and their respective influences on food security outcomes, thereby enriching comprehension of the intricate dynamics within global food security.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis encompasses data from 113 countries for the year 2022, utilizing Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) models to identify significant drivers of both the GFSI and quality and safety dimensions. This methodological approach enables the examination of probabilistic connections among different indicators, providing a structured framework for investigating the complex dynamics of food security.

Findings

The study highlights the critical role of regulatory frameworks, access to clean drinking water, and food safety mechanisms in fostering food security. Key findings reveal that “nutrition monitoring and surveillance” has the highest probability (75%) of achieving a high-performance state, whereas “national dietary guidelines” have the highest probability (41%) of achieving a low-performance state. High GFSI performance is associated with excelling in indicators such as “access to drinking water” and “food safety mechanisms”, while low performance is linked to underperformance in “national dietary guidelines” and “nutrition labeling”. “Protein quality” and “dietary diversity” are identified as the most critical indicators affecting both the GFSI and quality and safety dimensions.

Originality/value

This research operationalizes a probabilistic technique to analyze the interdependencies among quality and safety indicators within the GFSI. By uncovering the probabilistic connections between these indicators, the study enhances understanding of the underlying dynamics that influence food security outcomes. The findings highlight the critical roles of regulatory frameworks, access to clean drinking water, and food safety mechanisms, offering actionable insights that empower policymakers to make evidence-based decisions and allocate resources effectively. Ultimately, this research significantly contributes to the advancement of food security interventions and the achievement of sustainable development goals related to food quality and safety.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to evaluate mobile apps developed to prevent food waste from the perspective of responsible production and consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs qualitative methods, and the dataset consists of the 1,382 content and online reviews and comments for 11 mobile apps in addition to 30 in-depth interviews conducted with consumers and restaurant managers/owners using the apps.

Findings

Mobile apps are proving to be popular with people, inviting users to fight food waste in a sustainable and responsible way. While users' main motivations for becoming food waste fighters are responsibility, positive emotions and economic sensitivity, restaurants' motivations are different, such as social responsibility, innovative business models, attracting new customers and cost orientation.

Practical implications

Creating digital value and contributing significantly to sustainability in the food industry, mobile apps offer different opportunities to the market. By supporting and encouraging the use of these apps, businesses can reduce food waste, prevent financial losses and offer consumers more choice and variety.

Originality/value

The present study aims to address this lack of empirical research based on a holistic perspective by providing a multidimensional assessment. Such an approach should contribute to a thorough understanding of the motivations that drive users and restaurants to become food waste fighters.

Abstract

Purpose

Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary movement which brings people together with the aim of creating safer, stronger and more active communities. This paper aims to explore the contemporary position of Neighbourhood Watch in the UK through three key themes: the focus of Neighbourhood Watch schemes and how this extends beyond crime; Neighbourhood Watch membership and efforts to expand this beyond traditional residential boundaries; and the operation of Neighbourhood Watch, with a particular focus on technology-enabled methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper draws on data generated through interviews with key stakeholders working in the field of Neighbourhood Watch (n = 7) and interviews (n = 7) and two focus groups with Watch volunteers (n = 5) in the United Kingdom (UK).

Findings

Findings highlight aspects of Neighbourhood Watch that have remained the same – most notably the initial “roots” of schemes which have always looked beyond crime to tackle issues of health and well-being. In addition, issues of scale and diversity continue to present challenges within membership. However, there have also been changes, in particular the use of technology and moves to a model which offers more flexibility in terms of Neighbourhood Watch membership.

Originality/value

Findings position contemporary Neighbourhood Watch as a responsive and adaptable model; however, they also highlight how this must operate alongside traditional face-to-face, in-person methods to achieve meaningful community engagement.

Abstract

Purpose

Research demonstrates that health-care staff can hold negative attitudes toward people diagnosed with “Personality Disorders” (PdxPD), which can negatively impact health-care outcomes. Evidence for staff training is inconsistent with limited demonstration of sustained impact. This study aims to evaluate whether a new, brief training session can deliver similar results to longer training packages and sustain positive change 6- and 12-months after training (Black et al., 2011).

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 428 health-care staff attended the 3-hour training session during the study period. Questionnaires assessing knowledge, confidence and attitudes were administered pre- and post-training and at 6- and 12-month follow-up.

Findings

Brief training significantly improved knowledge of PdxPD (p < 0.001), attitudes towards PdxPD (p < 0.001) and staff confidence (p < 0.001) working with PdxPD after training. Feedback showed high ratings of training usefulness and quality of training delivery. Improvements in knowledge, attitudes and confidence were maintained over 12 months. However, gains in knowledge were not maintained at six months.

Research limitations/implications

The study demonstrates positive outcomes from short training which can lead to significant resource and clinical time savings.

Originality/value

Findings suggest that the brief training session can achieve similar outcomes to more intensive training evaluated elsewhere. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to consider maintenance of outcomes at 12 months for foundational PdxPD training. The staff sample was broad and not limited to staff working in specific settings or professions.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to elucidate effective strategies for promoting the adoption of green technology innovation within the private sector, thereby enhancing the value of public–private partnership (PPP) projects during the operational phase.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing prospect theory, the paper considers the government and the public as external driving forces. It establishes a tripartite evolutionary game model composed of government regulators, the private sector and the public. The paper uses numerical simulations to explore the evolutionary stable equilibrium strategies and the determinants influencing each stakeholder.

Findings

The paper demonstrates that government intervention and public participation substantially promote green technology innovation within the private sector. Major influencing factors encompass the intensity of pollution taxation, governmental information disclosure and public attention. However, an optimal threshold exists for environmental publicity and innovation subsidies, as excessive levels might inhibit technological innovation. Furthermore, within government intervention strategies, compensating the public for their participation costs is essential to circumvent the public's “free-rider” tendencies and encourage active public collaboration in PPP project innovation.

Originality/value

By constructing a tripartite evolutionary game model, the paper comprehensively examines the roles of government intervention and public participation in promoting green technology innovation within the private sector, offering fresh perspectives and strategies for the operational phase of PPP projects.

Abstract

Research methodology

The main data used to develop this case were remote, synchronous interviews with the three characters in the case. The authors conducted two interviews with the main character in the case, Geoff Brown, specifically: (1) an initial 30 min interview to determine the fit and focus of the case and to help create the interview protocol for the full case interview (this initial interview was conducted on March 12, 2024); and (2) an hour-long interview to ask targeted questions to fully develop the case narrative (this interview was conducted on March 28, 2024). Geoff Brown was also involved in reviewing drafts of the case, approving the final version of the case and reviewing the assignment questions in this instructors’ manual (IM).

Case overview/synopsis

This case focuses on Geoff Brown, Executive Director at Alberta Chicken Producers (ACP), which is a not-for-profit organization in Alberta, Canada, that is responsible for representing 250 regulated chicken producers. Brown is grappling with what to do with the remote/hybrid work policy at ACP. Part of the impetus for reconsidering this policy was the comments from ACP’s long-tenured Office Manager and Executive Assistant, who had been asking Brown to bring this policy forward to a staff meeting for discussion throughout the past year. Brown now feels ready to move these discussions forward but is unsure of how to proceed and what the best practices would be to ensure that the policy in place for remote work is beneficial for work engagement, individual and organizational work performance, work–life balance, employee relationships and fairness perceptions.

Complexity academic level

The target audience for this case is undergraduate and graduate students taking a course in the disciplines of human resources management or organizational behavior. This case will be especially relevant for a human resources management course when studying the topics of employee benefits (e.g. work–life balance), health and safety (e.g. stress) and work design (e.g. telecommuting), and this case will be especially relevant for an organizational behavior course when studying the topics of motivation (e.g. fairness), communication, organizational culture and decision-making.
