This paper explores current teaching and learning practices, benefits and challenges in the implementation of Internationalization at Home (IaH) in higher education.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper explores current teaching and learning practices, benefits and challenges in the implementation of Internationalization at Home (IaH) in higher education.
Design/methodology/approach
The study follows a systematic review (SR) protocol in accordance with the PRISMA Statement, covering published research from 2018 to 2022. Through this process, we identified 58 peer-reviewed manuscripts meeting our inclusion criteria. We examined disciplines, locations of IaH, objectives pursued, modality of the IaH implementation, activities and resources used. Benefits and challenges were also analysed.
Findings
The SR reveals a growing adoption of IaH, employing various technologies and interdisciplinary methods to foster cross-cultural competence. It emphasizes diverse teaching activities and resources, aligning with digitalization trends. While IaH brings benefits like improved intercultural sensitivity, collaboration and skills development, it also faces challenges in language, technical, personal, pedagogical and organizational aspects, highlighting its complexity.
Research limitations/implications
Our search focused on research from 2018 to 2022, potentially missing earlier trends, and excluded grey literature due to quality concerns. The SR emphasizes online collaborative efforts in IaH, signalling a shift to digital internationalization. Institutions should invest in supporting such practices aided by strategic university alliances. A critical approach to “Global-North” collaborations is urged, promoting geographically inclusive IaH initiatives.
Originality/value
This study responds to the call for critical analysis on concrete examples of IaH. Through a systematic review, it explores recent teaching and learning practices, with a particular focus on the latest technological advancements. The study specifies learning objectives and identifies relevant tools for implementing IaH initiatives.

Abstract
Purpose
The new teleworking conditions imposed by extreme events such as the COVID-19 pandemic blur the border between home and official working space, amplifying the conflicting demands of family and work life experienced by employees across national cultures. Drawing on conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study explores cross-national variances in the underlying mechanism of how family–work conflict (FWC) affects employees’ operational and marketing productivity in the global epidemic-induced teleworking context.
Design/methodology/approach
This study conducts a large-scale and cross-national survey of 710 remote employees who worked from home partially or fully during the COVID-19 outbreak across three countries: the USA, the UK and Vietnam.
Findings
The results show that FWC drives affective commitment, leading to greater employees’ operational and marketing productivity when teleworking. We also find distinct moderating effects of organizational factors (i.e. task control) and employees’ psychological factors (i.e. emotional exhaustion) on the FWC–operational productivity link across the three countries. Moreover, centralization positively moderates the effect of operational productivity on marketing productivity in the teleworking context in Vietnam, while it is not the case in the USA and the UK.
Originality/value
This study fills a gap in the literature by revealing cross-national differences in the underlying mechanism of the FWC effects on employees’ operational and marketing productivity in the pandemic-induced teleworking conditions. It extends extant studies in the work–family literature by introducing affective commitment as an important mediator in translating the negative consequences of FWC to operational and marketing productivity gain in crisis-driven teleworking across national cultures. We also provide insights into the distinct moderating roles of task control and emotional exhaustion in determining the FWC effect on operational productivity as well as that of centralization in driving marketing productivity. The findings have substantive implications for teleworking design and management to improve employee productivity across different national settings.

Abstract
Purpose
The emergence of social media platforms has revolutionized how brands develop partnerships with social media influencers (SMIs). However, users are seeking more meaningful engagement with SMIs, and little is known about how brands can shift their focus from transient engagements to continued engagement that builds long-term brand–consumer relationships. Extant research has provided inconsistent findings regarding consumer engagement behavior. To address this knowledge deficit, we contribute to the consumer engagement literature by developing and testing a conceptual model that explores and explains the relationships between the factors that influence continued engagement intention (CEI), a form of behavioral intention.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature review was conducted to identify gaps and develop a theoretically informed conceptual model and hypotheses. Survey data from 604 Instagram SMI followers were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling using SmartPLS 3.3.3 to assess the structural model relationships and conduct post hoc analysis.
Findings
The findings suggest that it is important to positively influence consumer responses to elicit CEI. Furthermore, homophily attitudes toward SMIs moderate the relationship between SMI experience and CEI.
Practical implications
Brands must work with SMIs to create positive SMI experiences and develop CEI. Furthermore, SMIs should focus on brands that fit their lifestyles to enhance homophily attitudes and forge CEI.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by combining social exchange and flow theories to develop and test a holistic framework for examining CEIs regarding SMIs and brands. The findings show that creating positive SMI experiences benefits brands seeking CEI.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the conceptual confusion in the extant literature about organizational agility and explore its role in different relationships in the context of digital transformation.
Design/methodology/approach
An integrative review of the relevant literature on agility was conducted. The literature on organizational agility and other variables in recent quantitative research was also examined to explore its role in different relationships.
Findings
Organizational agility is the ability to quickly respond and proactively embrace unanticipated changes in dynamic environments through effective resource reconfiguration and rapid decision-making. The role of organizational agility in achieving digital transformation has not been addressed from a holistic conceptual perspective. This paper addresses that gap and proposes that organizational agility is the underlying mechanism for an organization to fully use and engage its workforce, operation and network in the process of digital transformation.
Research limitations/implications
This research is an integrative review of the existing literature on the concept of agility and its relationships. The next phase of research needed for theory building will be the operationalization of constructs.
Practical implications
Organizations should strive to strategically develop both the reactivity and proactivity sides of organizational agility in achieving digital transformation that involves fundamental changes at different levels of the organization.

Abstract
Purpose
With the advent of metaverse, virtual influencers (VIs) are on the rise and so is their usage in advertisement of various products and services. This study aims to explore the domain of sustainable marketing and presents whether a VI can be more effective than their human counterparts (HIs) when it comes to environmental messaging. The study uses the concept of message frames to check which message frame and influencer type leads to more effective communication and ultimately sustainable purchase decisions.
Design/methodology/approach
A 2 × 2 experimental design was employed to check the effect of the type of influencer (HI vs VIs) on message effectiveness using positive and negative message frames which ultimately affect the purchase intentions of the followers. A combination of two-way ANOVA along with PLS-SEM was used to validate the hypothesized relationships.
Findings
The findings from the structural equation modelling revealed that HIs still continue to be better at communicating environmental messages than VIs. Further, in lines with the previous research this study highlighted the importance of negative message frames in enhancing the effectiveness of posts related to environmental causes. Additionally, the study revealed a positive association between message effectiveness, consequential awareness, environmental activism and sustainable purchase intentions.
Originality/value
Though there is an emergent interest in VIs, scant literature exists on how they encourage sustainable consumer behaviour. This study attempts to fill this gap by assessing the comparison between VIs and HIs in terms of promoting sustainable consumption. It is a novel effort in the crossover of sustainable marketing and influencer marketing.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the connections between young Finnish consumers’ stimulation values, impulsive buying, financial problems and life satisfaction.
Design/methodology/approach
Path analysis with maximum likelihood robust standard errors estimation was used to examine relationships between variables and composite variables, as well as to explore indirect connections among them. The data set included 2,297 respondents aged 18–29 years in Finland.
Findings
Results show that stimulation values were directly positively associated with greater life satisfaction and indirectly linked to lower life satisfaction through impulsive buying and financial problems. Findings also reveal the connections between stimulation values and impulsive buying and between impulsive buying and financial problems.
Research limitations/implications
This study extends the authors’ understanding of Schwartz’s values theory by showing how consumers’ stimulation values have both positive (i.e. higher life satisfaction) and negative (i.e. lower life satisfaction) outcomes.
Practical implications
This study brings recommendations for educators to reinforce young consumers’ media literacy and financial literacy to prevent the youth from developing a tendency toward impulsive buying and to seek stimulation more constructively. Also, from a public policy perspective, it would be beneficial to include more financial literacy and financial skills courses in young people’s curricula to help them recognize and resist impulsive buying tendencies, which can further reduce financial problems.
Originality/value
This study broadens the knowledge of the important connections between young consumers’ stimulation values, impulsive buying, financial problems and life satisfaction, an area where the authors’ understanding has been limited.

Abstract
Purpose
Shopping through e-commerce platforms has become a primary daily activity. However, research on consumer engagement within e-commerce platform contexts remains scarce. We examine the relationship between consumer engagement on online shopping platforms and their subjective well-being, considering self-expansion and self-extension as mediators.
Design/methodology/approach
We investigate the role of consumer engagement by dividing it into two experiences (crowdsourcing and crowdsending). Using validated measurement scales to analyze data from 440 South Korean consumers, we examine how these engagement experiences affect self-expansion and self-extension, ultimately leading to higher subjective well-being.
Findings
Crowdsourcing and crowdsending play different and complementary roles in improving self-concept. Furthermore, self-expansion and self-extension are key variables influencing consumer engagement and well-being on the platform.
Originality/value
This study provides a new perspective of consumer online shopping behavior, revealing the self-related mechanisms that influence the relationship between consumer engagement experiences and subjective well-being.

Purpose
The review paper aims to understand the development of workplace ostracism as a field in organizational studies from 2000 to the present. The study provides a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of the domain by exploring its antecedents, consequences, underlying mechanisms and buffering mechanisms.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study analyses 134 published peer-reviewed empirical and non-empirical articles retrieved from the Scopus database. A systematic literature review and bibliometric analyses (using VOS viewer) have been used to gain insights into the development and trends within the field. Bibliometric analyses involved science mapping techniques such as co-citation analysis, co-occurrence of keywords and bibliographic coupling. Combining these three techniques, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the workplace ostracism research domain's historical, current and future landscape.
Findings
In the present study, through descriptive analyses, the authors uncovered publishing trends, productive journals, countries and industries that contribute to this research field. The systematic review enabled the showcasing of the current landscape of workplace ostracism. The bibliometric analyses shed light on major authors, influential articles, prominent journals and significant keywords in workplace ostracism.
Originality/value
This study enriches the existing literature by offering a comprehensive research framework for workplace ostracism. It goes beyond that by presenting significant bibliographic insights by applying bibliometric analyses. Furthermore, this study identifies and emphasizes future research directions using the theory, characteristics, construct and methodologies framework, aiming to expand the knowledge base and understanding of this topic.

Purpose
This study aims to explore the relationship between global unity and cultural diversity in an interconnected world, examining how globalization influences cultural exchange while preserving identities. Using hybrid thematic content analysis (HTCA), it reveals how cross-cultural collaboration can be fostered amid global challenges like climate change, health crises and technology. The research offers insights into integrating global efforts with local cultural nuances to create sustainable solutions. By bridging qualitative and quantitative approaches, it provides new perspectives on harmonizing global interconnectedness with cultural preservation in governance, technological innovation, diplomacy and education.
Design/methodology/approach
This research applied content analysis, thematic analysis and HTCA to examine global unity and cultural diversity. Content analysis highlighted key themes in international frameworks, whereas thematic analysis delved into elements promoting cultural preservation and adaptation. HTCA synthesized these insights, combining content-focused themes with broader cultural, economic and policy perspectives. Data sources included academic literature, international policy documents and case studies from UNESCO and regional cultural policies.
Findings
The findings reveal that while globalization drives global unity, cultural diversity remains crucial for preserving individual identities. Key themes include multiculturalism, cultural exchange, hybridization and resistance to homogenization. While globalization can erode local traditions, it also fosters cultural enrichment, seen in fusion cuisine, multilingualism and ethical fashion. The research identifies strategies for balancing global unity and cultural diversity, such as hybrid approaches to environmental sustainability, integrating cultural insights into global health and inclusive technological innovations like AI and virtual reality. It also highlights the role of institutions like UNESCO in promoting cultural diplomacy and the challenges in balancing global governance with cultural diversity.
Research limitations/implications
This research is limited by its reliance on secondary data from policy documents and literature, without primary data from affected communities or policymakers. Future studies could incorporate interviews and surveys to gain first-hand perspectives. In addition, the geographic focus on documented globalization effects limits broader applicability; more inclusive case studies across diverse cultural contexts are recommended.
Practical implications
The study offers actionable insights for policymakers, educators and cultural leaders to promote inclusive cultural exchange and hybridization strategies. It emphasizes balancing globalization benefits with cultural heritage protection. Practical applications in education, health and technology should consider cultural differences for more inclusive and effective solutions, such as integrating global citizenship and cultural sensitivity in educational policies.
Social implications
The study emphasizes how intercultural understanding and collaboration can enhance social cohesion in multicultural societies. It advocates for celebrating diversity, fostering cultural dialogue and promoting inclusive global policies to build peace and address global issues while maintaining diverse identities.
Originality/value
This study’s originality lies in its methodological triangulation, using HTCA as a novel approach to unify content and thematic insights. By integrating content analysis, thematic analysis and HTCA, this research offers a unique multidimensional analysis of global unity and cultural diversity, revealing how these aspects can coexist within globalization.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to advance knowledge of channel integration, a key feature of omnichannel retailing, by investigating the role of specific touchpoints in delivering a consistent integration perception.
Design/methodology/approach
Quantitative methods were adopted, by testing a model built on the stimulus-organism-response framework. Data collection used a panel survey across the grocery and fashion sectors (1,031 and 739 consumers, respectively). An ordinary least squares regression with clustered standard errors was conducted, combined with a multiple correspondence analysis, followed by a mediation analysis.
Findings
This study identifies touchpoints relevant for channel integration perception and shows that they differ across product category and customer types (first time vs repeat customers). Furthermore, it pinpoints touchpoints that are directly and indirectly related to patronage intention, thereby exposing the mediating role of channel integration. By drawing on categorization theory, it discusses individual touchpoints’ contribution to channel integration perception, at general level and on different customer targets.
Practical implications
This study offers a new vision of channel integration perception that highlights touchpoints’ role. It contributes to the established channel integration quality framework by showing that integrated information is concerned not only with consistency of information across channels but also with the specific touchpoints through which such information is disseminated.
Originality/value
This study provides directly actionable managerial implications, by through strategic insights for customer journey and customer experience design/redesign and by offering a practical methodology for retailers to identify the touchpoints they can leverage to improve their customers’ channel integration perceptions – with consequences for patronage intention.
