Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically investigate how knowledge paradox affects collaboration performance. Knowledge paradox, which arises from the simultaneous need for knowledge sharing and protection, is common in interorganizational collaboration. Using the ambidexterity perspective, this paper aims to reexamine the effect of the knowledge paradox on collaborative performance to explore the moderating roles of structural and contextual ambidexterity.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a sample of 153 firms involved in vertical and horizontal collaboration, collected via questionnaires. Hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis.

Findings

This study demonstrates that the stronger the knowledge paradox is, the higher the potential for value creation. Thus, knowledge paradox has a positive impact on collaborative performance. The functions of structural ambidexterity and contextual ambidexterity strengthen this positive relationship.

Originality/value

This paper not only expands the theoretical application of the knowledge paradox and ambidexterity theory in the context of interorganizational relationships but also provides significant managerial implications. By comprehending the dynamics of the knowledge paradox and the role of ambidexterity, managers can make well-informed decisions to enhance their collaborative performance.

Abstract

Purpose

DeLone and McLean (D&M) has been amongst the most widely used models to assess the success elements of information systems (IS) since 1992. A decade later in 2003, D&M proposed a revised design that included several components which have been left out of original proposed model. This study aims to rely on the review of a number of papers casing the era 2011–2022 that satisfies a specific set of requirements to identify the research gaps in this area and to prepare a future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a systematic review: a technique that identifies and evaluates pertinent research. This gathers and analyses data from selected studies with objective to catalogue all empirical research studies, which responds to a certain study topic or hypothesis to meets predetermined inclusion criteria. Data collection method was divided into four stages, and selection details are determined through flow chart.

Findings

This research discovered D&M 2003 model use in many contexts, countries and cultures to better comprehend the topic and addresses its gaps, particularly with regard to public sector and its particularities. Publications have frequently emphasized the significance of this idea while studying public sector information systems by using associated variables-related items. Findings also include a summary of key components and dimensions used in reviewed studies in relation to each of the seven variables, and associated particularities in government sector over the world.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first ever effort in this developing country in discipline of Information Management to execute such kind of study to review D&M ISS model in detail at this stage to evaluate nonacademic public sector information systems around the world.

Abstract

Purpose

The preservation of digital records, particularly their authenticity, integrity and accessibility over time, is a critical challenge faced by institutions worldwide. In South Africa, these challenges are further compounded by inadequate infrastructure, legal complexities, ad limited resources, which threaten the long-term sustainability of digital repositories. This study aims to investigate the compliance of selected digital repositories in South Africa with the standards of a Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) and the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research approach was used, assessing five purposefully selected repositories based on their significance in preserving South Africa’s digital cultural heritage. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with key personnel, content analysis of relevant documents (such as policies and procedures) and direct observations of repository environments to evaluate operational frameworks and technological infrastructure. A review of relevant literature informed the development of assessment criteria, while data from interviews, content analysis and observations were triangulated to ensure reliability.

Findings

The findings reveal significant shortcomings in compliance with OAIS and TDR standards, particularly in areas such as policy implementation, staffing, financial sustainability and technological infrastructure. None of the repositories fully met the OAIS responsibilities, and all lacked systems to ensure the independent understandability of digital records by designated communities.

Practical implications

The study highlights the need for improved staff training, stronger preservation policies and increased financial and technological investment to enhance compliance with international standards. Recommendations emphasize capacity building, strategic planning and collaborative efforts to sustainably manage South Africa’s digital heritage.

Social implications

The study highlights the importance of preserving South Africa’s digital cultural heritage, which holds value for both present and future generations. Ensuring the authenticity, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of digital records is crucial for fostering a sense of national identity, supporting historical research and promoting inclusivity in cultural representation. By improving digital preservation practices, these repositories can serve as reliable resources for education, cultural engagement and community empowerment, ultimately strengthening social cohesion and collective memory in South Africa.

Originality/value

This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of digital repository compliance within South Africa, a context marked by unique infrastructural and resource constraints. The recommendations offer a foundation for addressing gaps in repository management and contribute to the broader discourse on sustainable digital preservation.

Abstract

Balancing economic development with social challenges such as gender inequality has become critical in the current times. Structural barriers persist as obstacles to women's professional opportunities despite evolving gender roles in the modern era. This chapter investigates the ‘motherhood penalty’, which is a concept couched in sociology and describes the disadvantages that working mothers face including lower wages and fewer opportunities of career advancement. This chapter explores economic, physical and mental health impacts of this penalty and sheds light on its detrimental effects on women's well-being and organisational success. Potentially, virtual reality (VR) technology is a solution through which working mothers can alleviate stress and improve well-being. In this chapter, existing literature on the motherhood penalty has been reviewed, and the innovative use of VR in workplace settings has been examined. There is limited research on the nexus between VR, motherhood penalty and working mothers' well-being, and therefore, this chapter seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of this intersection and proposes VR as a tool to mitigate the motherhood penalty, promoting gender equality and enhancing overall workplace well-being. Future research should explore VR's long-term benefits and ensure inclusive applications for diverse demographic groups.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a measurement instrument for green internal marketing (GIM) in a knowledge-intensive industry (Higher Education).

Design/methodology/approach

This study consists of four phases, using a mixed-methods design. Study 1 used a systematic literature review, interviews and focus group discussions (n = 30) to identify five categories and 29 initial items. Study 2 used exploratory factor analysis for scale purification and refinement. The study confirmed a 20-item and five-dimensional scale. The final data collection (n = 576) was conducted for Study 3 using the quantitative approach and establishing the scale’s predictive validity. Study 4 checked the impact of GIM on knowledge worker performance using Smart-PLS 4.

Findings

This study found that GIM has five dimensions, which work as a catalyst in the knowledge-intensive sector. The study also found a significant impact of GIM on knowledge worker performance.

Originality/value

The study’s innovative approach involves the development of a multidimensional scale and an examination of its effect on the identification of variables by GIM, specifically on the academic performance of knowledge workers in higher education. The study provides valuable recommendations for professionals and academics on achieving knowledge worker performance within higher education institutions effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide empirical evidence to verify the dimensional structure of artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot quality and examine the impact of these dimensions on consumer satisfaction and brand advocacy among Gen Z in the fast food industry in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical data was obtained with an electronic self-administered survey instrument from 397 young consumers who had prior experience using AI Chatbots across multiple fast food brands in Egypt. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the formulated hypotheses.

Findings

The results showed that AI Chatbot quality dimensions, specifically information authenticity and system compliance, significantly enhance young consumers’ satisfaction. In addition, information authenticity of AI Chatbot quality was observed to wield a significant influence on young consumers’ advocacy. In contrast, an insignificant relationship was noticed between satisfaction and advocacy. Moreover, the mediating role of consumer satisfaction was not established.

Practical implications

Given that Gen Z is more technology savvy and computer literate, marketers and practitioners of fast food brands should invest in AI tools to respond to young consumers’ expectations and improve their perception of their services.

Originality/value

This study uses stimulus-organism-response theory to understand the mediating effect of young consumers’ satisfaction in the relationship between AI Chatbot quality and consumer brand advocacy within the fast food industry. Also, it introduced two novel main constructs of AI Chatbot quality, namely, information authenticity and system compliance.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how an organization’s innovation capability could influence research and development (R&D) performance. It also investigates if industry–academic knowledge transfer has a moderating relationship between organizational innovation capability and exploration and exploitative innovation in improving the R&D performance of the organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the literature and dynamic capability view, a conceptual model was developed and then validated using the partial least squares-structural equation modeling technique considering 387 responses from academicians and industry personnel.

Findings

The study found that industry–academic knowledge transfer has a significant moderating impact toward improving innovation capability, organizations’ R&D performance and exploration innovation. However, it has an insignificant moderating impact on improving innovation capability and exploitative innovation.

Practical implications

Organizational innovation capability is characterized by both exploratory and exploitative innovation. Both types of innovation support the R&D performance of an organization. Also, organizations that closely work with academic institutions could gain significant R&D knowledge from academic expertise. This study provides food for thought for the academic community as well as industry policymakers.

Originality/value

There are significant opportunities for academic institutions to gain practical knowledge from industry which can help them to accelerate their R&D activities. However, transferring knowledge between industry and academia has challenges related to intellectual property, patents and so on. Not much research has been conducted in this area. Thus, the proposed research model is unique and adds to the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The study principally aims to investigate the relationship among work–life balance (WLB), job satisfaction (JS) and employee commitment (EC) among the railway staff by integrating the social exchange theory (SET). The study also explores JS as a mediator in the context of the new normal.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-method sequential explanatory design was utilized for this study. The research instrument was administered to 533 railway employees, using purposive sampling to ensure reliability and validity. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the quantitative data and measure mediation effects. Additionally, 15 interviews were conducted with employees from three job positioning groups (A, B and C) to gain further insights into commitment-related concerns.

Findings

The study found that WLB and JS positively influenced EC, with JS acting as a mediator between WLB and EC. Furthermore, factors such as fostering friendships among colleagues, effectively managing work–life integration and recognizing the importance of job roles were identified as crucial in enhancing the relationship between WLB and EC.

Originality/value

The study includes SET to examine the social exchange process while considering WLB benefits as a reward from the employer and EC as the outcome of this reward. This study contributes by examining the effects of COVID-19 on the railway industry and EC. The mixed-methods sequential explanatory design gave a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between WLB, JS and EC. The study’s implications highlight the importance of implementing supportive policies, such as flexible work schedules and a supportive organizational culture, to enhance employee commitment and reduce attrition rates. The study emphasizes the significance of prioritizing employee well-being to achieve organizational goals and enhance organizational commitment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the key factors that influence customer satisfaction when interacting with augmented reality shopping assistance applications (ARSAPs). ARSAPs grant consumers the capability to experience products in a virtually simulated user environment before product acquisition. With the development of mobile e-commerce due to breakthroughs in smartphone and augmented reality (AR) technologies, there is an increasing potential for these emergent AR mobile services, yet there is a need for further improvement.

Design/methodology/approach

This study initially explored the key satisfaction factors for ARSAPs by utilizing topic modeling of a collection of actual user reviews. These factors are subsequently revisited and complemented by existing literature, and finally verified through logistic regression analysis supported by sentiment analysis.

Findings

This study identified the key factors that influence customer satisfaction with ARSAPs, including visuality, sense of reality, credibility, format, completeness, understandability, relevance, flexibility, response time, reliability, availability, ease of use and privacy. In particular, two additional factors (i.e. visuality and sense of reality) were newly identified as important in the context of AR, despite their previous omissions in existing literature.

Originality/value

This study is the first to investigate the key factors that influence customer satisfaction with ARSAPs from users' perspectives, utilizing topic modeling of a large amount of real-world data on actual user feedback. By identifying new factors (i.e. visuality and sense of reality) that were not identified in previous literature, this study provides important academic implications for a broader understanding of AR and related technologies that are essential elements of the metaverse. This study also provides valuable insights for developers and companies in the e-commerce industry on how to optimize AR applications and develop more targeted and effective marketing strategies in this field.
