Abstract

Purpose

Financial misappropriation is a significant challenge to China’s innovation-driven growth model. This paper investigates the impact of regional-level financial misappropriation on innovation efficiency across 30 provinces and administrative municipalities in China.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses the Data Envelopment Analysis method to estimate the innovation efficiency at regional level, then, employs panel Tobit and indirect-transmission-channel models to analyze the direct and indirect impact of financial misappropriation on regional innovation efficiency in China.

Findings

The findings of the paper suggest that financial misappropriation significantly reduces regional innovation efficiency in China both directly and indirectly. Financial misappropriation hinders the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and, at the same time, it retards high-tech industrial development.

Research limitations/implications

The research adopted the non-parametric approach over the parametric approach due to limitations of data availability. Both approaches have their own criticisms. However, the focus in this generates the efficiency scores that could be used for the analysis principal question of this research.

Practical implications

The results show if the innovation efficiency issues are not addressed at regional levels the national efficiency objecting may achieve suboptimal results.

Social implications

The benefits of innovation may not flow on to regional economies creating social disparity.

Originality/value

This paper is the first of its nature empirically testing the direct and indirect effects of financial misappropriation on regional innovation efficiency in China by using regional financial corruption data of 30 Chinese provinces and administrative cities.

Abstract

Purpose

As a contribution to the social ties and dynamic capabilities literature, the purpose of this study is to examine the boundary role of the industrial factors (competitive intensity, dependence on suppliers and demand uncertainty) on the relationship between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) social ties (business ties and political ties) and firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 1,077 SME top-level managers in Turkiye. The proposed model is analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) path modeling in SmartPLS 4.0 software.

Findings

The results elucidate how demand uncertainty serve to moderate the influence exerted by both business and political ties upon the performance of SMEs. However, the moderating effects of competitive intensity and dependence on suppliers, although initially hypothesized, were not found to have a significant impact on the relationships.

Practical implications

The relevance of social ties of SMEs may depend on the industrial factor. Although both political and business ties are effective on the customer side, these ties may become irrelevant when it comes to competition and supplier relations. In competitive SME settings, where businesses are vying for similar markets, the effectiveness of ties might be questionable. In such cases, SMEs might invest in building in-house capabilities and competencies, rather than relying on their relational networks.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding of how relational networks, which are considered as dynamic managerial capabilities, impact SMEs performance. It also fills an important gap by testing the boundary role of industrial factors on this relationship. The empirical data is collected from the Turkish context, which is also an original aspect of the study, considering most of the social ties literature has a limited focus on a few contexts. The results also indicate new areas for discussion and exploration, indicating potential avenues for further research.

Abstract

Purpose

Profitability is crucial for a company’s sustainability. This study aims to examine the influence of profitability and specific variables on the value of real estate companies in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a sample of 42 real estate companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2017 to 2023. A static panel regression approach was adopted, with the best model being the fixed effect model, verified through a robustness test.

Findings

The results indicate that the fixed effect model is the most effective in explaining firm value. Profitability, proxied by return on assets (ROAs), does not significantly impact firm value. This finding is confirmed by robustness tests using another profitability measure, return on equity (ROE). Additionally, company size negatively and significantly impacts firm value, while activity ratio and leverage have a positive and significant effect. Liquidity and company growth do not significantly affect firm value.

Research limitations/implications

The research is limited to Indonesian real estate firms, cautioning against broad generalization to other countries or industries. The study could not demonstrate the influence of profitability on the value of real estate companies. Instead, firm value is influenced by company size, activity ratio and leverage.

Practical implications

Real estate firms should increase their activity, optimize funding and consider company size to enhance firm value.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the Indonesian real estate sector by revealing that profitability does not enhance firm value. Indonesian real estate companies generally have low profitability and firm value.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to model the purchase intention of virtual reality hardware using the cognition-affect-conation (CAC) model, which integrates psychology and consumer behavior research to explain how individuals' thoughts, emotions and intentions influence their behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from individuals aged 18 and above who had no prior experience with virtual reality hardware. A total of 330 valid responses were obtained from individuals residing in Malaysia and analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) approach.

Findings

The study validates that vividness, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment and utilitarian value have a positive impact on attitude. Vividness, perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment and perceived value have a significant relationship with satisfaction, while perceived usefulness and utilitarian values have a negative impact on satisfaction. Furthermore, the study underscores the positive correlation between attitude and satisfaction. The relationship between satisfaction, attitude and purchase intention is confirmed. Lastly, the moderating effect of individualism on the relationship between satisfaction and attitude towards purchase intention is confirmed.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable guidance for virtual reality designers and marketers, offering effective strategies to enhance brand promotion, user retention and sales through the skillful integration of virtual reality hardware.

Originality/value

The study enhances the understanding of consumer acceptance behavior regarding virtual reality hardware by incorporating affective aspects into cognitive factors and including individualism as a moderating factor. It addresses an important gap in the research landscape of the immersive industry, particularly concerning virtual reality hardware within the Malaysian context.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how institutional entrepreneurs in a mature field acquire different forms of legitimacy through various narrative strategies, as revealed by a historical analysis of the Late Qing Dynasty of China. Specifically, the study seeks to illuminate the narrative techniques employed by these entrepreneurs to build multi-level legitimacies for their new systems during the national crises of the late 19th century.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a qualitative approach based on three historical case studies of Westernization, namely advocates, reformists and revolutionaries during the Late Qing Dynasty of China. It delves into the institutional entrepreneurial activities of these groups, investigating how they navigated and influenced their sociopolitical context through narrative strategies.

Findings

The findings reveal that institutional entrepreneurs utilize various narrative techniques to build legitimacy. These include (1) modifying and disseminating narratives at the proper time, (2) ascribing their proposed system to cultural tradition by reinterpreting classical works and (3) offering understandable and concrete promises to stakeholders. The study also identifies an evolving pattern of narratives underpinned by mutual learning and continuous iteration among different factions of institutional entrepreneurs.

Originality/value

This paper adds new insights to the literature on institutional entrepreneurs and, more broadly, to institutional research literature by advancing our understanding of the discursive dynamics underlying institutional changes. It unveils the complex interplay of narrative techniques and legitimacy building in the context of societal and institutional upheaval, providing a nuanced understanding of the role of narratives in institutional entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the influence of Zhongyong thinking on the zone of tolerance (ZOT) for the quality of Shanzhai products among low-income Chinese consumers as well as examines the moderating effects of frugality and price.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 228 low-income Chinese consumers to test the hypothesized relationships between Zhongyong thinking, frugality, price and the ZOT of quality.

Findings

The results demonstrate a negative relationship between Zhongyong thinking and the ZOT of quality. This negative relationship is intensified by an increase in frugality, highlighting the complex interplay between cultural thinking and economic behaviors.

Originality/value

This research sheds new light on the research about the ZOT for quality by integrating the principles of mean and harmony with consumer rationality to explore the impact of Zhongyong thinking on low-income consumers’ ZOT for Shanzhai product quality. It further enriches the understanding of frugality’s role by discussing how it interacts with Zhongyong thinking to affect the ZOT for product quality among low-income consumers in emerging markets.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing upon compensatory ethics theory, this study explored the underlying mechanisms through which gossipers engaged in helping behavior as a form of compensation after initiating negative workplace gossip.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a two-wave field study of 394 Chinese employees, this study tests theoretical hypotheses using path analysis and bootstrapping methods.

Findings

The findings suggested that negative workplace gossip positively influenced the gossipers’ helping behavior through moral self-image and guilt. Moreover, moral reflectiveness not only positively moderated the impacts of negative workplace gossip on moral self-image and guilt but also positively moderated the mediating effects of moral self-image and guilt in the relationship between negative workplace gossip and helping behavior.

Originality/value

These results enrich the theoretical research on negative workplace gossip, offer new perspectives for studying this phenomenon and provide a theoretical basis and decision-making reference for management practices.

Abstract

Purpose

A significant amount of ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons is emitted during the production of building materials. With the world population expected to increase by 21.3% from 2030 to 2050, the demand for construction materials is set to rise, necessitating a shift toward eco-friendly options to preserve the ecosystem. Bamboo emerges as a promising solution to meet sustainable construction goals. This study aims to investigate bamboo’s potential as a sustainable construction material, evaluating its impact on construction productivity and safety.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted, using relevant keywords to retrieve journal articles from the Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. Articles were screened, and only those meeting the inclusion criteria were reviewed.

Findings

Bamboo offers numerous advantages as a construction material, including cost-effectiveness, abundance and strength, making it a viable alternative to traditional building materials with a reduced environmental impact. However, its widespread acceptance encounters significant challenges. The use of bamboo in construction can both positively and negatively affect productivity and safety in construction organizations.

Practical implications

This study proposes a framework for improvement that construction stakeholders can adopt to enhance bamboo’s utilization in construction while maintaining high productivity and safety standards.

Originality/value

While previous studies have advocated for increased bamboo utilization in construction, this study goes further to explore the implications for productivity and safety in construction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study has been to fill the gap detected in the literature and to analyze whether the application of management of R&D in accordance with UNE 166002:2021 allows companies to obtain higher product innovation and better performance, specifically incremental and radical product innovations.

Design/methodology/approach

The population used in this study included Spanish manufacturing organizations that were active, had more than 50 employees according to the SABI. The information was collected through a structured questionnaire previously tested using a company specializing in the sector under the supervision of the authors. A total of 1,154 companies were randomly contacted in order to reach an acceptable number of 225 valid questionnaires. The data analysis has been carried out with structural equation methodology.

Findings

The results obtained with a sample of 225 companies show that the application of this standard for innovation management promotes the development of new products with incremental and radical changes, and improves business performance. It has also been found that incremental and radical product innovations mediate the relationship between this standard and performance.

Research limitations/implications

Firstly, the survey is only addressed to the company's operations manager. Secondly, the sample used is cross-sectional, whereas innovation management implies a broad implementation process.

Practical implications

Managers must know that radical and incremental product innovation can improve the company's operational performance. And the most direct implication of this work is that, those companies that are committed to the development of innovations should seriously consider the application of the principles incorporated in Standard 166,002, as an instrument that improves the results of innovation in the organization. Since this SIMS promotes both types of innovations, it improves results directly and indirectly through these product innovations.

Originality/value

The existing literature indicates that no empirical study has focused on the benefits of this SIMSs for innovation and BP. This paper fills this gap detected in the literature and analyzes the results of the implementation of this standard on incremental and radical product innovations and business performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the spillover effect of firms’ social media engagement with investors on consumption market performance and examines the impact of balanced/imbalanced social media stakeholder engagement strategies on firms’ consumption market performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs multi-source secondary data covering 3,856 quarterly observations of 188 firms in the Chinese retail industry over six years (2015–2020). Polynomial regression analysis and response surface methodology are used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The study reveals that firms’ social media engagement with investors has a positive spillover effect on consumption market performance. Additionally, the authors find that a balanced social media engagement strategy, which allocates resources evenly between consumers and investors, is more likely to optimize firm performance than an imbalanced strategy.

Originality/value

The research reveals cross-stakeholder spillover effects of social media engagement, introduces balanced/imbalanced engagement strategy concepts and extends the balanced marketing perspective to the social media context, providing guidance for firms to optimize their social media strategies.
